So Im getting pretty bored with the Sense user interface, and I have found a great replacement for it, although, when I run the UI, it says I havent bought this app off the market, and it makes me quit out of it. Its called SPB Shell 3D, and I downloaded it off of 4shared.com. I am unrooted, so I cant use DroidWall to stop it from connecting with the market. Ive been looking for any good apps that will do this without needing root, and the only one I have found is App Shield, but dont have the money to buy it. I was wondering if there was any way I can stop SPB Shell from connecting with the market, without having to turn my WiFi or Data service off.

got an x10 today, what's everyone's recommendations on to do's to make it better? i plan on rooting, then removing the branded/unwanted apps. i ordered a decalgirl skin and screen protector, but other than that, what are some tips/tweaks to start with? is it worth it to remove timescape?
also,
does ADB work with the x10?
one thing you can do is go to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833324
there you will find a way to remove some of the preloaded apps and get new ones
you may also consider rooting your phone and getting barnical Wifi to share your connection.
may be even update your music player (if you don't like the laggy media player) with winamp / power amp
not sure if i want to go that route. i usually remove apk's i don't want via ADB, that's why i was wondering if ADB works with the x10. i will probably remove the music app and adb push a stock music apk over to /system/app if that's the location on the x10. plus in my personal experience with other android devices, JIT usually has a negative effect on performance after time since it always seems fill up cache quickly.
that link looks basically like it runs some sort of abd interface, so i'm assuming adb will work with regular command line.
so now i know that the stock music app is laggy, i read somewhere they were suggesting not removing it since it was integrated with so many other apps. but if it's laggy, i'll get rid of it.
is the timescape even worth keeping? i don't do twitter, some facebook, but it's not a necessity to have a constant feed.
so yes, it does work with ADB.
if you want the regular android music player, you can download it from XDA, its here along with the regular android "3d" gallery
the file from the thread above is fully customizable, you can choose which parts of it you want to apply.
hope this helps
My Roger EVO 3D came pre-installed with an app called "Wi-Fi Calling". Does anyone know what this is?
I think it may be a Rogers app (the icon is red and white), but I can't tell for sure. It doesn't appear on the market from what I can tell.
I'm asking because despite the fact I have turned the app off (via a checkbox within the app itself), the app regularly account for around 5% of my battery usage.

the app is not stock on the Sprint version of the HTC EVO 3D.
some apps are coded poorly and will continue to run services in the background even though they coded the app to give you an option to turn the app off. if this is the case with the WiFi Calling app and you don't plan on using it, your best bet would be to move the apk out of the /system/app or /data/app directory to somewhere else like the sdcard.
the solution i present assumes you have root and are nand unlocked. removing the apk is the *safest* method, imo, to make sure the application is uninstalled and not consuming resources.
The android package manager, which manages all the devices applications, monitors /data/app and /system/app for application .apk files to be added/removed and will process the application .apk file as soon as it detects a new file or the removal of an existing file.
Hence, moving the apk file out of /system/app or /data/app to the sdcard will essentially cause the packagemanger to uninstall the application and the icon should be removed from your application launcher/tray.
If you ever do need the app again you can simply move the app .apk file back to /data/app or /system/app and the packagemanager will load it up.
i only have the sprint version of the evo 3d, so i'm unfamiliar with this app, but hopefully my suggestion solution and the description of how the packagemanager operates will help!
Thanks for the info.
Since I'm running the GSM version of the EVO 3D, I'll have to wait for a reliable root method before I can get rid of this app.
That's the one think I'm missing from my old X10 - root access (and Titanium Backup specifically).

i was hoping you wouldn't reply saying you're not rooting .. but since you did .. the only other solution i've heard of .. and it states in it's description, it doesn't require root, is an application which loads at startup and allows the user control over blocking/allowing other apps from starting up.
after a quick google search, i think this is the app i've heard about:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vesperaNovus.app.StartupAuditor
author thread: http://androidforums.com/application-announcements/54838-new-improved-startup-auditor.html
it does cost money and i have not purchased it but i've heard from some people that it works .. so take that for what its worth! i think the android market has a 15 min return period from app purchase to end of return period time allowance.
root would be the preferred method, but as a non root alternative, this is the best solution i can think of. good luck!
It's not that I don't want to root. It's that there currently isn't a root method available for the GSM variant of the EVO 3D.
I'll just wait and live with it until then.
Hi,
I came to the same conclusion that the WIFI-Calling app is still running even when turning offf the feature. And, yes, it doesn account for some batery usage when looking at battery stats.
I am trying to find a way to have the battery last for a full day of slight use. (doesnt last a full day for me with only 5 msg, 3 short calls and some internet browsing).
This app is unkillable with SystemPanel;(
wtf is rogers doing with its apps is crap.
Rooting the phone is not something I consider for the moment.
Will try the suggested app.
thanks,
StartupAuditor fails at preventing the WIFICalling app from starting
Same for Android Assistant
This WIFICalling app is still there eating a big chunk of the CPU time
;(
I had attempted to create iPod Touch-like devices with my old phones, namely Motorola Defy(MIUI) and LG P-999(CM7), by either deleting the appropriate apks or by keeping the device in airplane mode. Everything works fine for a while, then after a few days/weeks, apps will stop working, insisting on connecting to the internet to authenticate. Once this is done, the apps will work again temporarily, but for a much shorter time before needing to re-authenticate. Some apps, like Pocket League Story, periodically re-auth like this even on my active device, but every app does it on my Defy and G2X. I don't notice this ever happening on my CM7 Nook Color.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening? It just seems odd to me that it happens on the two phones, but not on the reader. Is this a build.prop thing? A newer development that didn't exist when I installed the apps I use on my nook, but did when I converted the Defy and G2X? I was trying to use the G2X as a media player, keeping my music on a 32GB microSDHC so I didn't have to clog up my Galaxy Nexus with music, but PowerAMP crashed so often that I had to abandon the idea. I gave the Defy to my girlfriend to use for apps and whatnot as an introduction to Android, but she spends more time waiting to authenticate than she does using it. Frustrating.
Any ideas? I'm open to tinkering.
Thanks in advance!
So I've noticed that one app, Cut the Rope, never tries to authenticate. This app was downloaded from GetJar on launch day (that was fun, lol), so I'm assuming there is no authentication built in. Every other app, whether downloaded from the Market, Play store, or Amazon appstore, all try to authenticate and refuse to work until connected to wifi. Blegh.
Does anyone know of a way to add an account to the market without linking it to the gmail or any other apps? Basically I would like to link my gmail account into the market on my wifes phone without everything else bring affected. I've been looking around for something on this for a while and have had no luck. My wife wants some apps I've had but doesn't want to spend on it since I already put out the money for them. I even have paid apps dating back to day 1 of the market even having them.
I've wondered how to do this myself because when you hit the menu button, it shows account(s). Seems you should be able to switch between two or more. What if your Gmail gets hacked and you have to disable it? You lose all your apps and such. They should link it to your IMEI but there are so many things that run off Gmail (Gmail, Market, G+,...), I doubt that would work.
Back to your original question. What I do is make a back up of mine with Titanium and then copy the files to my PC and put them in my wife's Titanium folder and just restore them that way. She can't get updates, but most of them are incremental anyways. If something big happens in an update, I just update it on my end, back it up and do the switheroo on hers. I also "Detach From Market" on her phone so she doesn't get the update notification. Might seem unethical if I was doing it for you or someone else, but she is my wife and we are the same household, so I think it is fair enough.

I've thought about the unethical aspect as well and the way I see it it's no different then if she watches a movie I buy.
Her phone isn't rooted (yet), I've had trouble with the adb aspect of it and from what I've read using super one click and adb is the only way to do it. I was going to root it because the my touch q has way too much bloat and it bogs down performance.
As far as using titanium goes, I have done that in the past but so many apps have verification now it can be a pain. This way would give her free range over what WE paid for.
My phone was serviced "reprogrammed" and when it came back I keep getting ads. I tried resetting the phone but it still keeps getting adware silently installed. Is there any way to fix this?
You are not alone. Bought this phone for my mom since she likes a bigger screen to do social media stuff. The malware popped in after the last ota. The official wirelessupdate app included on the phone silently installs random apks that pushes full screen ads and impersonates clicks even if the the phone is not being used. This is common with generic android phones coming from CHINA
I haven't figured out a way to root the phone as most rooting methods will fail(because of the sucky spreadtrum SOC which makes it difficult to root the phone).SADLY, rooting is the only way to disable/uninstall the wirelessupdate app.
However, here's a workaround I found that works.
1) restrict your network to limit background data usage (Found in settings).
2) **uninstall the malware app: finding the app may be difficult as It normally disguises itself as a system app with names like radio, settings, wifi or some application name that doesn't even make sense. It uses a lot of data and is always active. You'll know its the fake app if it poses as a system app but you have the option to uninstall it(System apps cannot be uninstalled without root/Su access).
Buttt....
The wireless update will probably install another malware app after uninstalling the current one.
3)disable notification of the app so it doesnt send fake notifications to you that opens ad based webpages as it also fakes notification, posing as a fake notif from FB, whatsapp
4) force stop it and stop the services from settings so it doesn't load or push apps while you use your phone
Restarting the phone will make the app run again
5) Remove the app's permission. By default its granted access to location, settings, storage and sometimes camera or mic. The wireless app doesnt detect this and wont turn those permission back on
6) lastly, you can contact firefly support AND PRAY TO THE GOOD LORD they know know what they're doing. Because I did and they were completely clueless on the troubleshooting or on the issue itself and even blamed the problem on the user. Ridiculously stupid.
I haven't really tried ADB yet because i don't have the time and the phone lacks resources online to restore it in case I brick it. Frankly, this phone is not worth investing time fixing especially with the quality of support it has from Firefly and the price it asked for.
