I think it's good to have.
Not really useful. Android is Linux and AFAIK Linux don't have any real security problems. If you always download from Market, then you won't worry about malicious apps, as Market always puts a check on such apps.
If you not installing every APK or browsing malicious websites, etc you shouldn't need for AV software. Plus, it would increase battery consumption.

Common misconception, that Linux doesn't have viruses. It's just not efficient to attack those several percent users.
I find it useless at the moment. Maybe there will be a need to have one but not at this time.

I use AVG but not for virus security but as locator for lost phone
Useless, i think you only need to be cerful what app you give su permision. Without root acces no harm can be done.

Considering back in March, 58 apps were removed from the Market that contained malicious payloads, it probably doesn't hurt to have an AV program installed just in case.
Google reckoned up to 120,000 devices may have been infected by these apps before they were removed.
I believe apps were removed from market for violating copyright.. Mp3 music downloader was a good app

I have been using Avast for a while - I really like it. Works on my Android phone too.
I use dr. Web and its about even with Avast as far as features.

i've always used lookout mobile security. it also has a "mobile locator" so if you lose it you can still find it..but i assume that won't work on a wifi tablet.
I use Lookout on my Android devices.
After having used lookout and a few others i can attest that Avast is wonderful. Can install the locator/wiper as a system app making it less likely the theif will get around it. Tons of great features.

Though it's a German website, but the test is the most current I can find from 3rd mar 2012:
http://www.chip.de/artikel/Android-Virenscanner-Test-von-41-Gratis-und-Bezahl-Apps_54893891.html
41 scanners were tested.
Here are the best with >90% detection rate:
avast! Mobile Security
Dr.Web anti-virus Light
F-Secure Mobile Security
IKARUS mobile.security LITE
Lookout Security & Antivirus
Kaspersky Mobile Security (Lite)
Zoner AntiVirus Free
And here the losers with 0% detection rate:
Android Antivirus
Android DefendeR
LabMSF Antivirus beta
MobileBot Antivirus
MT Antivirus
MYAndroid Protection Antivirus
I've been using Norton Security on my TF300 and so far I like it.
There is a free and paid version.
Haven't upgraded to the paid version yet, the free offers everything I need so far.
Hi! Had the same problem, now i'm using Malwarebytes+Kaspersky. Read this privacy-pc.com/antivirus-software-review - antivirus software review
I had dr. Web on my phone and one day it went into lock saying i had to enter a password. I hadnt even created a password so i had to wipe my phone. I use avast now

You don't need an antivirus... Just don't download all kind of crap.
Never once used an anti-virus on my linux pc or my android phone, never needed to - just don't go downloading random crap apps that have no reputable reviews or seem suspect (e.g. you think its a paid app and its suddenly available free)
Dont use Anti virus as far easier to reinstall lol
either avast or norton (from samsung apps)

I prefer and use Lookout for it's malware scanning features, but equally for the find/alarm/lock/wipe features. Mistakes happen.
i want to know what is the best free antivirus app for android device
