Wifi tethering not working on SHIFTAO5P V1.2X - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I started using Theory's AOSP roms and the speed and feel its like a new phone but I've always had problems with the wifi tethering. I've flashed (wiped cache/dalvik formatted system) to shift 1.2 and still have problems with the tethering not connecting.
I've tried both wireless tether for root and native with similar results: connects to a fraction of the 4G speed with an unsecured connection and it won't connect at all with WPA.
I have the 802 radio and I've tried other ones.
I'm stuck at the moment so any help will be really really appreciated
(Theory I would have addressed this directly in the ROM thread but I'm fresh off the package with less than 10 posts)

There is a Tether Fix in the AOSP Stor3. Delete the current Wifi Tether apps you have... Wipe cache and dalvik and flash in recovery.

Thanks, apparently I forgot to wipe dalvik so that did it.
Now my issue is the speed that I get from tethering, I use to get the same 4G speed on sense roms while tethering but on aosp if I get past 1mbps its a lot.
What speeds does everyone else experience and what so you use for tethering?

Anyone have any idea how to get more speed out of wireless tethering? I've tried native, wireless for root and open garden but they all behave the same. I get around 8mbps on the phone but only 1mbps on the computer

I was having the same issue with cm7.
my phone gets about 40mbps down and 25 mbps up but when tethering the computer was only getting like 3 or 4 mbps. I don't normally tether but 4g recently went live so I was just testing if it would be a viable switch for the house.
Its almost if there's something g in the 4g service that recognizes tethering? Just speculation.

I thought it was something like that but its only on CM7 as wifi tethering gets 4G speeds on sense roms. Have you tried with any other apps? I feel like its the native hotspot for CM7 that gets in the way of the other apps (whenever I start any wireless tethering app the phone will show the icon for cm7's hotspot feature as active)

Tethering Tweaks?

I just bought a thunderbolt on impulse. This time yesterday I had no plan to do so, but I woke up on the wrong side of the bed I guess.
Love the phone thus far, though coming from an EVO I don't feel much difference beyond the speed of the device.
Does anyone know ways to improve tethering? Using the FCC speedtest app I am getting 5-7Mbps Down adn 20-30Mbps Up pings all around 100. On my tethered XOOM I am getting an impressive 4-6ish down, 3-6ish up with pings from 50-150.
The numbers when I started this thread were about 3 and 3 which still beats my evos 1 and 1 in optimal conditions. Thus far the Thunderbolt seems to connect to 4G instantly and unlike the EVO the stock tethering app is 4G friendly, but more to the point the 700mhz seems to be proving to be less placement centric. I can have it on a chair in the corner of the room under a desk and it seems to still get damn good speeds. Where I am used to putting my EVO on a windowsill and still wanting better signal.
All that aside, my point of this thread is, has anyone found tweaks that increase tethering performance? Are certain channels better, or does less/no encryption increase performance?
Bump. I know I can't be the only one who wants an answer to the best way to tether.
im new to verizon and read that they are able to detect tethering from rooted devices. nice that we have tethering now, but when the time limit runs out will tethering be possible? has anyone tethered on verizon before without issue? is tethering truly unlimited, or is there a cap/throttle?

I've been tethering on my D1 for months and never been "detected". Tethered data looks like cell phone data to the provider. The only way I could see being detected is if the app you are using (the included one) sends some sort of flag. AFAIK the root wifi tether does nothing of the sort.
what are you guys using to tether? a 3rd party tethering app?
I've tethered heavily for at least 8 months on Incredible and Droid X. Never had an issue with detection. You will need root for third party app once root us achieved. Permanent root should come today. Then use app from market

Once you have root this program will let you use wifi to tether: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
There is one in the market too, but I've never used it...
-Edit-
Also been tethering for over a year on my Droid and have never had an issue with VZW. My highest month ever was only 4 gigs, I average around 1.5-2.
I think your reception issue is more in the higher quality of the VZW network compared to the lousy Sprint network your EVO is on. People don't like to admit it, but my friends on Sprint and AT&T all have spots in thier house where the phone only works, or works best, etc.... Verizon that is generally not an issue.

A bit off-topic here but I turned on MobileAP on Galaxy Tab (AT&T) so that I could check out the GTablet while I was @local officemax store, AT&T detects it and sent me email & SMS reminder that I will need to have a proper plan.
So yes, they should be able to detect.
or you could use easytether, and tether via usb. No root required.

All of my roms have network speed tweaks that improve your tethering :good:

slow 4g tether

so i tried to wireless tether my phone today to see if my new 4g connection was faster than my at home internet. however during a download i was only getting about 108kb/sec which is waaaay slow for 4g. im getting 2-3 mbps on the phone. im using barnacle wifi tether. is it the app? if so what app should i be using? FYI i dont want to use the actual verizon feature because they limit how much you can download per month.
edit: dur, if i read first... 2-3 mbps is still pretty slow for 4g on your phone though. you could try wireless tether: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

found the problem. says in description that barnacle shares 3g connection. can anyone suggest a good 4g tether or wireless tether app? i tried the one listed here but i couldnt find it on the market only in the link.

Get the one from Google. Verizon had Google take wifi-tether out of the market. Just make sure that you have install from unknown sources checked off.
that one still only says 3g and 2g in the description and it doesnt have a thunderbolt version. can anyone confirm it works with 4g and if so which version should i get?
It's a free app dude. Why not just try it?
because im out of town and dont have 4g and wont until monday.
I know that PDAnet claims to be capable of achieving very fast 4g speeds...I believe the description said 20-30 mbps, and it's a non rooted app. However, it isn't a wireless tethering app, you have to use a USB connection (or bluetooth, which will be slower.) If using a a USB cord is acceptable for you, or you can't find a wireless tethering app that you find to deliver adequite speeds for your needs, give that one a try.
Wifi tether worked for me i la,ok city, tampa, seattle should i continue, it has worked everywhere i have been either 4g or 3g,the phone is faster but it still works.
my screamin' lil' bamfed out tbolt

[Q]Why is tethering so slow??

On my phone I get 15-20mbps on speak easy speed test
When I use googles android wifi tether or the verizon app I get 1mbps down
What gives? It seems lie the tether app is using 3g instead of 4g
I have tried wifi tether and the hotspot app and both have the same issue
I also searched and others are having the same problems but no solutions posted.
Anyone get wifi tether to use the 4g instead of the 3g? please post how
Yea same here.I've searched the Net looking for an answer but no luck.I even tried flashing different radios but no luck either...
I did that there's a WiFi tether beta but who knows how long before they get it working with 4g, not to mention make it compatible with every phone and network out there.

heh. i go to the library often and will occasionally want to play Left 4 Dead online. problem is, the library's wifi is super slow and regularly disconnects.... so i will use pdanet to my laptop. theres no 4g in my area but at least the 3g is stable enough to keep me connected and my ping averages 200 - 300. sometimes itll jump as high as 700(which really sucks) but im at least surprised that the 3g can even do that.
So nobody has figured out why tethering only uses 3g instead of 4g????
Just figured I'd let you know that I let a guy tether his iPhone (just to show him LTE) to my Tbolt recently and he got 12dn/3up using the built-in tethering hotspot in CM7 (he ran the Speedtest.net app on his iPhone).

It's not a universal problem. It sounds like a "just you" problem and maybe a few others. LTE works fine for me and I get 1.5-2 Megabytes per second on it with CM7.

Well, it's not "just you". My phone won't USB tether if I have "LTE" radio selected. If I just select EVDO, then it will tether. Running OMGB.

Not everyone is having the problem. Seems to only be a handful of people.
I'd say if you're running cm7 and you messed with the radio settings other than just using the toggle for 3g and lte/3g auto, that is why your tethering is not working. Don't mess with those and dont force it to LTE only.
Anyone ever figure this out?
I'm running stock rooted Galaxy Nexus and I'm having the same problem. No matter what method I use to tether it seems that the tether switches to the 3g radio after a few seconds of turning it on.
I know this is a TB thread, but I have the same problem so it must not be a TB issue...
Everyone posting is running aosp roms, could that be the issue? On shiftsense i get 10-15 down with pings around 100. I also use the wifi tether fix i posted in the general threads. Ive flashed the newest radios, but never change the settings for lte/cdma.

I want to add another data point. I can tether to my android device and get about the same speeds I get on the phone. However, when I tether to a windows machine the speed is extremely slow <1mbps u/d. The only way to get better speeds on the PC is to run filterproxy on the phone. It's still about 35-50% of the bandwidth of the phone but a little better. Could this be related to like a MTU size on the PC or something timing out when being routed from the PC through the phone?

I use Wireless Tether for Root Users on my TB, and I get about 10-15Mbps down, but only around 0.5Mbps upload.

VZW is on to you.
How long does it take before 4G cuts out? I just tried it on mine and so far its been stable for a few minutes of tethering to my tablet and streaming some Netflix.

I have not experimented with any ICS roms other than Nils ICS Business. Under settings make sure you set it to Nexus (CDMA/LTE) with routhing fix on. After that it should work smooth. If not, there are only two other possibilites one being your ROM or two being your on the edge of 4G coverage and your phone's signal is drawing so much trying to transfer data that it drops from 4g into 3g. Ive had similar instences where this has happened and I end up turning WIFI off and then Mobile Network Off, followed by turning them both back on to regain 4G.
Also you can try updating su binaries, sometimes that helps problems with tether.

[Q] 4g slow through TB, but WIFI fast

Hello I have a tunderbolt running Thunderstick fullblown 1.1.0.. My 4g on the phone will not break 2mbps. I was standing next to my friend with an unrooted thunderbolt and he was getting 13mbps..
I pulled my battery and 4g card to try to reset, cleared cache and cookies and same..
Then I turned on the wifi hotspot on my thunderbolt and connected my laptop and got 15mbps but my phone will stuggle to get 2mbps.. A lot of times switching to 3g on my thunderbolt is faster then 4g.. It is not a signal issue as my laptop connected through the phone is very fast.. I range from -69dBm to -85dBm depending where I am.. I am in NJ near NYC and the 4g is very good here, when I use to be near the hospital that has a tower next to it I was almost always seeing 40-50 mbps, now struggle to get to 2mbps..
Please HELP!
How are you testing the speed on your phone.

I am using the app from speedtest.net..
I discovered that it looks to be the rom I am using.. I backed up my set up and then loaded my last rom that I backed up just before changing roms and using my old rom which was the Thunderstick 3d and my 4g speeds over the phone are fast again, the bad thing is the thunderstick 3d rom wifi hot spot feature did not work at all... So I went back to Thunderstick fullblown 1.1.0 for now since the wifi hotspot works good.. I will have to look into a new rom that has good 4g phone speed and good wifi hotspot speed..

Actually, its the app. It does not work with rom properly. If you think about it, why would it be different on pc using wifi tether than it is on your phone? The pc probably had the accurate reading, the phone has the same speed, just doesnt read proprtly.
