Hello!
I'm trying to make my own Rom right now. With dsixda's Kitchen it isn't very hard to do so I thought I'd just give it a try. I'm taking a rooted official Update (Version: 2.10.405.2) as my base. Adding busybox runparts, the /data/app functionality, a2sd+, the custom bootanimation functionality etc. isn't a problem. Removing some apps like Maps, Facebook, Teeter (and so on) and adding some like Rom Manager, Neocore or Quadrant isn't a problem, too. But if I want to implement a theme like the Carbon Espresso Mod or a theme I made with the UOT Kitchen I'm getting bootloops at booting the phone. Here's what I do: I unzip the folder (for example a theme made with the UOT Kitchen) and I copy over the framework-res.apk from the unzipped folder to my Working Folder of the Kitchen (to system/framework) and I overwrite the original framework-res.apk.
And NO: I didn't choose a battery mod or a bootanimation in the UOT Kitchen....
Hope you guys can help me
I might be wrong but doesn't the new file have to be signed? I know there is a signing option in the kitchen.

It's a system .apk so it doesn't have to be signed.
I can't shed any light on the subject, but here's a bump.
Are you replacing the whole "framework-res.apk" file? If so then you will need to resign your entire ROM. Why? When you change a system file ("framework-res.apk", "com.htc.framework.apk", "twframework-res", "rosie.apk", etc.) it no longer has a matching "signature" for all the files it serves images to. Plug your phone into your computer and open up "ddms" in your android_sdk > tools folder to watch what happens when the phone boots up.
A workaround (The way I do it, it's more fun IMHO) is to open up your .apk files in 7zip (or if you're on a mac BetterZip) and add the images from the themed .apk to your stock .apk. This way makes it so your original .apk has the same signature as your other system files yet has the new images from the other files that you wanted. I've had a lot of luck with this method. I don't know if it will still work if you change any .xml files as I have not messed with those yet.
I've subscribed to this thread so if you have any questions post back here or you can PM me if you want. I'm on XDA all day, every day so I'll try to help as much as I can.
Thanks for all the answers! Especially to you, mbobino. Is there a way to sign the whole Rom new? When I make my Rom at the End, the Kitchen signs it automatically, doesn't it? The idea with the images is very good, but if I want to implement a theme like Carbon Espresso it isn't that easy, 'cause Carbon Espresso isn't just a few images. There are several .xml's etc.
The reason you boot loop is mis matched resource ID's in the public.xml file. If you decompile the framework using apktool after adding your images using an archiver then recompile apktool will update the public file for you which saves you from pulling ID''s for every image. I have a video tutorial of how to set up apktool and decompile framework in my Rom thread. Changing images in app apk's won't cause you to boot loop just messing with the framework will.

The kitchen signs the .zip that you flash when you build it. It does not sign any .apks for you on its own. However, there is an option to sign .apks within the kitchen.
In my opinion, taking all of the images and figuring out how it all works is fun. I feel like I've already learned quite a bit from just digging around and moving files around.
As for the .xml files, you can decompile the .apk and edit them and then recompile the .apk. I'm actually looking into this today. It sounds like some work but hopefully I'll get it figured out.
Sounds like fun indeed So, I'll just have to try it. Where can I find the "Settings" for the Notification Bar? Thanks
The variois status*.xml files in the res/layout folder of the framework-res.apk and the status*.smali files in the services.jar.
What? If I want to implement a Theme made with the UOT Kitchen (without battery) I should just copy over those files to my existing res-framework.apk OR copy over the whole res-framework.apk (the new one) and sign it?
EDIT: Just tried it with a theme from the UOT Kitchen and it worked perfectly. I've just signed the res-framework.apk and the htc.com.resources.apk (or whatever) in the Kitchen, flashed it on my Phone and it just worked like a Charm. But I have got a 50% Transparent Notification Bar and all the system icons (Battery and time/date) are still black and not transparent! Has anyone got a idea where to change this? (.xml or whatever)...And does anyone know where I can find the HTC Wallpapers? I want to change them a little bit

HeyItsLou, I looked up your ROM thread but couldn't locate the video tutorial.... do you mind providing the url? Specifically, I am trying to add to the list of wallpapers in a ROM. (I have setup apktool but not sure where/which folder to add my wallpapers in Framework-res.apk Launcher.apk before recompiling/signing). Thanks.
You COULD use the Theme Porter by daneshm90. It will only port the PNG s for it so things like clock colour n stuff will be lost, but it will get you alot closer...

Thanks! But like I've written before in my Edit, I made it. The bigger theme (Carbon Espresso) wasn't a problem, too. I just had to sign the .apk's in system/app and system/framework (the kitchen doesn't do it by itself. You have to choose the option to sign a single .apk and then look, where the system/framework .apk's are...). Works great now!

I don't sign system files or apps and apkmanager among other threads I've read say not to. Im on a rooted backflip. I find I only have to sign third party apps to install.
Why do you have to sign YOUR files?
Sorry for answering that late. Had a few things to do, so I wasn't online very often
If you want to cook an App into your Rom (NeoCore for example), then you don't have to sign it. You can just copy it into data/app. But if you want to change the whole framework-res.apk of the Rom, you have to sign it. 'Cause if you don't sign it, you'll get a Bootloop. The framework-res.apk is a very important part of the Rom, so it has to "fit" to the others. There are some ID's which have to match. Otherwise it won't work. That's how I understood it
Another Question: Has anybody got an Idea where to change the things that are coming, when you first start the phone with a new Rom (the "installation" of the Rom)? I wan't to write: "Welcome to DomiKamp's Rom!" Or something like that...

I was curious about this too. I always edit the framework-res of any ROM I flash using a custom set of images I have and have never signed the apk afterwards and it has always worked. Maybe cause I'm only replacing images? I usually do this with framework-res and twframework-res and they both can sometimes grow by 1MB or more. Just my experience.

I think that in order to do the "welcome to" thing you'll have to edit the update-script file. I'm not 100% on it though. Look at a cm Rom and see what all is in there.

Anyone know how to mod it? I am trying to get rid of the gray look and make it more gingerbread-like.
The problem is everytime I extract it and re-zip + sign it with apktool it doesnt let me install it on my phone.
I cant re-compile it either after editing the png files...
if anyone has any ideas let me know...
If you are editing a .9.png file, you need to follow a slightly different procedure via APK Manager.

Ive been modding Handcent sms for some time. Link Can you explain what are you looking for? or Im guessing you have apk modding issue not really handcent
you don't need to use apkmanager or deconstruct/reconstruct apks to mod it (or any other app/widget for that matter).
download ninja morph from the market. you can select the apps from the phone, it will extract them and you can swap .9's inside ninjamorph to theme the apps/widgets.
i know with downloaded apps, you have to have them installed to system/app though. so you may need to move handcent to system/app, then chmod the apk, then reboot before doing the ninja morph.
This is just the plain CRT effect. No custom roms, no pre-made files or anything. (You need root)
I've searched for this on XDA, Google, other forums etc. but I couldn't find it.
It always showed up ROMs including this feature, not the actual feature itself
DO A BACKUP BEFORE EDITING ANY FILES!
Also, you need root
1. Pull framework-res.apk from the /system/framework/ folder via ADB (Alternate way below*)
2. Decompile framework-res.apk with APKTool/APK Manager (Whatever you prefer..)
3. Navigate to /res/values/ and open the bools.xml file with Notepad++ (Notepad works too )
4. Search for "config_animateScreenLights" and change the "true" to "false".
5. Save, and compile the file. Open the fresh-compiled file and copy resources.arsc to the original apk. (Overwrite the existing one)
Click to collapse
Transfer the framework-res.apk file back to your phone, and then switch it with the original one
You must reboot to make it work!
*If you don't know how to push/pull files via adb, you can use Root Explorer and copy it to the /sdcard/ folder, then transfer it to your PC.
If you switch it back with root explorer, programs will start to force close. Just reboot and you'll be fine

Ah, so sorry.
Open the original framework-res with WinRar. And do the same with the modified. In there you'll see the resources.arsc file
If you don't know how to use APK Manager, use google.

What I'm saying is that if someone makes the anim for example KF3, it would only take a few seconds to upload so other people could use, while diy CRT anim takes at least 5 mins even if you know what you're doing.

Hi everyone, i used to tommytomatoes linux software to work on framwork and com.htc.resource files and all seemed to go fine with tommy's tools. no errors.
i pushed them to my phone and then installed them using adb.
i restart the phone and end up in a bootloop.
all i did was edit the colors.xml file to change the color and nothing else, no images, not a thing.
is there a way to figure out what is wrong with the 2 apk's i edited?
Thanks for any and all assistance, xml editing is killing me.
what ROM is it from? odex or not?
i used the apk's from king cobras rom.
I can't quite remember (and it could be different on a GSM ROM but I doubt it) but I think if you edit xml you need to remove the arsc or dex from the apk before you recompile.
you can ask here - lots of great help there, including tommyt

Hi.
Sorry, I wasn't sure if it should be in "Themes", so I posted in General.
I've got neo V with root made on .42 (with ZergRush) and .62 stock fw installed via OTA. I was trying to change the number of desktops in Home.apk. What I do, generally:
1. Decompile Home.apk
2. Edit "number_of_desktop_panes" in values/integers.xml
3. Edit values/styles.xml to avoid compilation error (as advised here).
4. Edit DesktopModelManager.smali (as adviced here), but there's slightly different code (different line number and variable (?) name).
5. Recompile, replace with /system/app/Home.apk
The replace process is 100% good, because restoring original Home.apk do not cause any problems.
I do it from adb. I made the /system/tmp/ dir and given it 777 chmod to do it faster (without /sdcard). I mount /system as R/W, push Home.apk to /system/tmp/, change chmod to 644, then replace /system/app/Home.apk with it. Sometimes I try "sync", sometimes not.
It works only with stock Home.apk.
The problem is with recompiled apps.
I tried:
- xdaAutoTool
- ApkMultiTool
- ApkTools (from here)
- ApkTools (from here)
I also tried signing the app and not signing it (as mentioned here).
I also tried installing another launcher (GO Launcher EX), changing it to default, then replacing Home.apk, then changing again.
I also (huh) tried recompiling the app without any changes (except the one in styles.xml, without it, compilation would not succeed).
I also (getting boring) tried skipping the .smali edit.
Nothing works. If I replace Home.apk without reboot, the Home button doesn't work (single press) and if I was on the desktop when replacing app - it becomes black, no dockbar, nothing.
If I reboot - the phone freezes on SE logo, fortunately I can access it with ADB - when I replace Home.apk with stock one, the phone boots in a couple of seconds without a reboot.
I've got Win7 Professional x64, the newet JRE and JDK for x64, tried newest and older apktool.jar, smali.jar and other files. ApkMultitool was working on the yesterday-updated Android SDK folder. And I have no idea, what am I doing wrong... Do you have any ideas?
EDIT:
- earlier I successfully replaced SystemUI.apk with the changed one (Ultrans v2b) - no problems here
- I've got locked BL and I didn't install any recovery

I had no idea, compile and decompile didn't report any errors so I assumed it should be OK.
As I never changed apk with dependencies, can you explain me two things?
1. Which files from /system/framework should I pull and where to place them before decompiling with ApkMultiTool?
2. Will files from framework be changed or are they only needed as resources and are left untouched?

You were right, thanks. I must have tried with the wrong file earlier, because I was quite sure I tried framework-res.apk - and I didn't. And yes, the app should be signed after build.
Now, the Home.apk is working with my changes, but only after this little "hack" from Chainfire.
But I've got another stupid problem - the only thing that doesn't work is the "Photos and Videos" widget... I think I'll give up...

But I've got another stupid problem - the only thing that doesn't work is the "Photos and Videos" widget... I think I'll give up...

Thanks, but in case of widgets I don't even know, where to start from. Why the hell only a couple of them doesn't work now? Photos and Videos, Music Player and Timescape Widget - I think that's all. I have no idea, where it came from :/
EDIT: OK, now I have an idea, but it scares me. As I can see, the only way to compile and run the .apk was to remove
Code:
android:sharedUserId="com.sonyericsson.home"
From AndroidManifest. Now, if I understand properly, the widget needs Home.apk to HAVE that ID? Because logcat says:
Code:
W/System.err( 3399): java.lang.SecurityException: Requesting code from com.sonyericsson.advancedwidget.photo (with uid 10004) to be run in process com.sonyericsson.home (with uid 10138)
Long story short: WTF?!

android:sharedUserId="com.sonyericsson.home that's the problem try replacing the compiled resources in a fresh apk

I tried removing the same ID from AndroidManifest in PhotoWidget.apk, but it didn't work.
The only thing I've managed to get to know is that no widget from com.sonyericsson.advancedwidget.framework will work and also that I'm not the only one, who has problems with it

Forgive me, but I don't understand. Can you explain it?
I'm unsure what your trying to do but if you get the resources fileand any thing else you changed from the home apk that you made,
and then put IT inside a fresh home apk -ie new untouched home.apk
this should help with what you're saying your problem is

OMG, I did it
First of all - I didn't understand you at the first time, about resources and "new" .apk. Now I think I got it (not everything, but enough to get this to work).
The problem I found on my private PC (earlier I was using other PC) was the "Sorry thats not the dependee apk, try again" error when trying to decompile Home.apk with framework-res.apk. It didn't happen before, but I was so tired with all of that, I wanted to try the shortest way, so here's what I did:
1. Decompiled Home.apk without dependencies
2. Made some changes I wanted to make
3. Just compiled the app, answering "y" for question about system app, but without copying "additional files".
4. Replaced resources.arsc file inside original (stock) Home.apk with the one from just compiled unsignedHome.apk, installed and...
- working Home.apk - checked
- working widgets - checked
- happy me - checked!
Thanks!
Your wellcome
