Have been playing around with my new phone for a few hours. Loving every bit of it. I download and installed KIES. Currently, this is what I have:
PDA:KE7
PHONE: KE4
CSC:KD1 (XEU)
KIES shows that an update is available. It will update my PDA to KF3 and PHONE to KE7. Is this update worthwhile? I plan on only updating/upgrading through official Samsung (which I assume is KIES), and then later doing it through third-party programs like Odin.
Thanks!
Kies = Samsung official update .
Worthwhile its your choice .

It should be safe. If it's not, at least you broke it the official way, and the warranty is not void. I've flashed it only with Odin, since the first day I got it, and haven't had any problems so far at all. The downside of KIES is that you can't flash newer/custom roms/modems/kernels.
And, I'm also assuming that KIES is just updating the firmware itself, not the OS.
So, I would not be getting the latest Android OS 2.3.4, correct? To do that, we must then use Odin?

Firmware is the OS Kernel Modem and other stuff .

Depends upon your phone supplier having updated to 2.3.4 .If not you can use the unofficial path flashing a stock Samsung rom via Odin .

You will still be on 2.3.3. If your phone was rooted, you will loose that and will have to reroot it again.
I can't remember if it cleared all the data or not, but it would be advised to do a backup prior to flashing.
You're right. It's still 2.3.3. Oh well.
Also, would it also be wise to do a full restore when updating firmware? I was advised for iPhone & apple products, when updating the iOS/firmware to always restore from new as opposed to trying to backup from previously saved profiles (you never know what errors you might save, etc). Or is it different on an Android-based firmware update?

Odin is Samsungs flashing tool. So if it's good enough from them to use themselves it's good enough for me.

Hi guys
I have the following problem
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII
I rooted my phone and now i heard that android 4.0 will come soon
so i wanted to restore my phone and get original firmware again
at this time i had litening rom 6.1 on my phone
then i restored a backup with clockworkmod recovery to a state before installing this firmware
then i unrooted my phone with SuperOneClick 1.9.1 and flashed the original KF4 kernel
These steps went very well and now here is my problem:
I'm not able to get firmware updates via kies any more
Kies doesn't search for updates, because it says, that my phone doesn't support updates via kies
Hope somebody can help me
Sorry ,I also have the problem
Find the stock firmware for your carrier in here or stock firmware for your country in here & flash that.
A clean flash of stock (as opposed to using a backup as you did) should enable you to use Kies to get official firmware updates.

Thank you for the info.. I will try out later
The other thing is, Did you screw around with and change your CSC? I believe it may have an impact on Kies updates as you are trying to update a phone with the wrong firmware and country code...
Could be wrong, had a couple to drink tonight and everythings a little fuzzy...
Pretty much installed XXKG6 on my SGS2 ages ago using ODin, check back a couple of months later and saw i had missed out on loads of updates. I really do not have time in my life to update my phone manually every other day.
My phone still works with Kies perfectly but i can't update/go back to official firmware which you get from kies. Unable to update to Samsung's newest firmware. How can get it back to working like when i first got my phone? When i could just plug it in and Kies did all the work while i go off and do something else. Also do i need a USB jig?

Hey,
should be work, when u flash back to an older stock rom like "KJ3" (without root or anything).
So Kies recognized that it's not the newest and so update to it.
U can check this thread for firmware and install guide:

Much success.

I will give it a go now, Thanks for the quick reply by the way.
Would it be best to install something like "XWKE2" i think that might of been the original firmware what come with my phone and it also says "Generic XEU (UK)" which is where I'm from so that might help too?
Cheers for the help mate!
Okay i can see
"+++++++[Frankenstein Firmwares]+++++++
These packages below are not official firmware packages, they are Frankenstein package created due to demand for Firmware with different CSC and modems and also leaked firmware packages. KIES will not recognise the firmware so you won't be able to update to new firmware using KIES unless you flash back to a firmware meant for your device first. Otherwise there will always be Odin to use for updates"
Explains why i couldn't update with kies. But now i have tried installing a number of the official firmwares. Half of them boot loop and never turn on. The other half turn on but i get no service and every couple of seconds something pops up about having to force close com.phone.android or something. Plus it no longer connects to Kies.
Please help me out

Sent from my Galaxy S2 - I9100 with Sensation Rom!
I have UK unbranded (XEU) Galaxy S II. yesterday Samsung confirmed the ICS update is out.
But when i connect my phone to Kies, it shows "Your device does not support update via Kies" (on Win 7 64bit)
I used the Kies registry patcher 1.8 to spoof the older version, then Kies detected the ICS update and went ahead to download some firmware update.
But it gets stuck while "Preparing components for the update" and never completes
Does anybody has faced similar issue? Any other way to get around it?
i say skip kies and use odin to flash, it will be as official as kies. search and you will find your info.
1: get ROM from checkfus downloader / or xda forum
2: flash using odin
3: wipe
I had the same "Your device does not support update via Kies" issue, also XEU ( and Win7 64bit though I'm not sure that's relevant? ).
Even after re-installing Kies, soft and hard-resetting the phone, rebooting PC, reconnecting device, etc., etc. ( I'd forgotten that some people have previously had success with the registry tweakage... )
I had :-
PDA : I9100XWKH1
PHONE : I9100XXKG5
CSC : I9100XEUKH1
( bought from Phones4U as an O2 upgrade )
I can't find this config anywhere for download, in fact, the only references to it that I can find via Google all seem to state the same problem with Kies not liking it...
So I used Odin to flash 4.0.3, and now Kies tells me that I've got the latest version, so it looks like my problem was that Kies just didn't like my specific version for some reason.
Odin itself is easy to use, I can see why so many people prefer to use it than Kies anyway... that said, I'd still like to understand why Kies didn't like the config that my phone came with from new...
I'm happy with ICS so far, battery calibration was nuts at first, but a reboot, run flat and full-charge seems to have sorted that out.

Codes on phone match no firmware on the server .
Kies only updates firmware that matches whats on the server .
Phone xxxx XEU
PDA xxxxx POL
CSC xxxxO2UK
Typical reject a phone with 3 different codes none of which can match what has been uploaded .

Wiping is recommended if you are going from GB to ICS. and no restore from GB either.
Sent from my GT-I9100
I had the same issue, for some reason Kies says it's not able to update if you don't have a full charge, charge the phone up, plugged it back in and it updated
Who use's kies for updating just flash using odin and then wipe, for more info dont post another post just use the search bar
Using ICS from last 4 weeks now
Here is what i did
1. Rooted my GB first to install Titanium backup pro
2. Took a backup of apps through titanium backup
3. Took backup of sms through Go SMS Pro
4. Flashed my SII with Odin
5. Rooted it again
Hey guys,
I have an international S2 I9100, that i updated to a march build of ICS. Overall its been a great experience, but there are several snags including a non-working lock screen, and some features missing.
My question is, can I return my phone to such a state (either by going back to GB for example) so that I can get the update via Kies? I could install the XPWLP(forgot the full name) 8 (That's the latest i think) but Id like to get it via kies so future updates are automatic.
I also havent rooted this device, since the roots I have seen are for the more recent builds of ICS.
Thanks in advance.
P.s First post, but a long time lurker
You cant return your phone to old GB version through KIES,
You have to use ODIN, to flash respective GB rom which will be upgraded to ICS latest version.
But why??? cant you directly flash latest ICS from ODIN then?
Actually what I want to do is, basically get to the official ICS update released by samsung, and let me preserve the ability to recieve updates via kies. Since i've flashed this old build using odin, the only way for me to get the latest/released ICS build is by using odin again. While that is fine, I want to be able to recieve updates via kies, so that i don't have a problem with future updates.
So i guess my question could also be understood as "Can i flash ics onto my phone using Odin, while preserving my ability to update with kies in the future"
only if your region has ICS available flashing that with odin will still work on kies. you have to wipe using code for csc to work correctly.
for later
*#1234# will show you if csc is installed, if not wipe using *2767*3855# if still doesnt work you have to flash again using odin. it happens sometime with ICS.

yes you should be able to receive updates thru KEIS, provided you have flashed an official ICS from ODIN (if Samsung rolls further out ICS updates in future , so far no) for your region.
Hi,
Has anyone on Orange in the UK updated to the latest firmware via Kies?
I've just plugged my phone in to Kies and seen the update, and I wanna know if this is what I hope it is... the JELLY BEAN UPDATE!!!
I doubt it, as I've seen nothing online to suggest anyone has it yet.
Let me know people! Thanks for your help!
Without evidence in a build number or Android version its just another old old update .
Orange first never usually months behind .
jje
There is no chance whatsoever that it is Jellybean, Jellybean will be out most likely last of all UK networks for Orange.... the first phone to get the update will be the UK unbranded update.
This update is probably LG8 or LH1....
I've attached a screen print of the message I get in Kies. Not sure if this is the "build number" your referring to. I won't get a version number till I update. I'm holding fire on that till I know it's necessary.

Last! Damn Orange.
When the unbranded update comes out, is there any way to trick Kies into giving me that? If I sim unlock or something?

not kies no, but you could use ODIN, you download the file from a link that will be posted on here open ODIN and plug in your phone and press start (not exactly the full process but just to tell you how simple it would be).
You don't need root or anything like that to do this, you could also use the same process to flash back to an Orange Rom if you needed to in the future.
LG very old firmware ..
Use CHECKFUS to download your original current firmware and save it can be flashed via Odin in the future if problems .

Thanks, I've used Odin before, but just to root a few S2s and my S3. Will keep an eye out for that unbranded update.
Funnily enough I just installed the LG1 radio on my GF's Orange phone last night as I had issues using the LFB Firmware.
