[Q] Replacing stock MMS with one that doesn't suck? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Way back when on my G1, with...whatever version of CM I was running...I remember having a slightly modified stock MMS app with one with a very simple change: when you click back, you went back to the list of the texts, not just back one "screen" of texts.
I've tried Handcent and was unimpressed...and can't find anything that will replace the stock MMC worth a darn.
I've tried extracting a couple of MMS.apk files from both the current RC for CM as well as one from some other location, both of which copy *into* my /system/app folder (rename the old one, copy in, reboot) without issue, but I get parsing errors.
Does anyone know where I can get the cool, slightly modified stock MMS.apk file where whenI push the back button I go back to the list of texts?

Go SMS Pro forsure

Request please.

Would someone be so kinda and send me their "contacts.apk" from their "/system/app" folder? I got delete happy tonight when doing a conversion from touchwiz launcher to GoEX and deleted contacts without realizing that besides showing contacts it also has system calls as well, LOL.
I can still use my phone, and using GoContacts I have a functional dialer / contact viewer, but there is a few little annoyances by not having the stock contact.apk file installed.
To get the file as long as your rooted, just browse to / system / app and you'll see the .apk
Thanks for the help
I don't think I can because I am not rooted, but I'll bump for you. Good luck
There are a few contacts.apk files in the Themes/Apps sub-forum. Damn XDA app keeps FCing on me every time I try to copy the URL so you have to look yourself, but they're there.
if you still need it have all the stock apks from my phone saved just incase this happened to me......

[Q] dialer/contacts screwed up in ICS?

I remember the dialer before i upgraded to ICS had a tab at the top for contacts, i could click that and find the contact i wanted, hell i could even send a SMS from there by swyping the contact name to the side...
The new dialer for ICS has contacts listed under the menu button, meaning its one more keypress to get there. It just doesnt "flow" as well, if that makes sense.
Im wondering, has anyone else noticed this? how can i get back the old dialer? Are there any good tweaked ICS roms that have this (and other) improvements? Im sorry but search didnt come up with anything and this place is crazy (two android development sections!?!) i couldnt find anything when i searched that met what im looking for.
Im currently running XXLPQ stock
hey there, i am using resurrection remix 1.4 w/ siyahkernel3.1rc6, and the dialler app for ics has contacts at the top of the dialler if thats what your looking for? its got 3 tabs, dialler, recent calls, contacts
That's exactly what inn looking for, any chance you can post the dialer apk for me?
i will do a titanium backup and see if i can get hold of my apk
EDIT: the two files i attached, put it in sd card, titanium backup... i THINK this will work, i would to a nandroid backup just to be sure, then try restoring the apps (search for phone in titanium)
pm me if i dnt reply to this thread
No go on the titanium backup, didn't wanna show up in my list, i cleared my titanium folder so there was nothing else, put the files in, restarted, start TB, no backups found for the dialer.
Try using root explorer and finding your dialer apk and post that? I can manually replace the file
thats the thing its not called dialler lol, its called phone, and seems to be fragmented into two parts =S lol let me see if i can find someting else
EDIT: try un g zipping the file so it shows an APK file and try pushing it to the system maybe? or installing it
EDIT 2: i managed to extract these apk's from the resurrection remix rom:
contacts, contactsprovider, phone, phonesky
hope it helps
Perhaps both Phone.apk (and .odex if applicable) and Contacts.apk (and .odex if applicable)?
my bad let me find .odex
EDIT: cant find .odex but try push the above found in system (on the rom.zip)

You don't have Phone.odex and Contacts.odex? That means YOU'RE on a deodexed ROM... But IF the other guy who is requesting the files is on an odexed ROM, he will have an extra step of removing the applicable .odex files. But he may already know that. (and it's always recommended to back anything up that you may end up needing again if you remove it)

I had that problem with "Resurrection rom 1.1" and believe me you better re-flash the ROM than s***ing with .apk-s... Didn't work for me so if you don't want to flash again you may use exDialer from the market, it's a good app, has the "swipe" functions and ICS themes, I used it for a week before switching to RR 1.4.
Ya def need one with an odex file...

No... you don't.
Back up the .apk file you intend to replace, along with their corresponding .odex file. Then REMOVE the .odex file and replace the .apk.
For example, if he gives you Phone.apk, and you have Phone.apk and Phone.odex, then COPY your original copies of Phone.apk and Phone.odex to a safe place, then delete Phone.odex, and replace your existing Phone.apk.
I've done this before, and used a deodexed Phone app on my odexed firmware.
Tried that but it didn't seem to work, after restart i lost service and couldn't dual out and had several other services complain on me, perhaps it's not comparable with my system?

If his version of Android is different than yours, then his apps probably wouldn't work for you.
Going back to read the thread, he said he is on Resurrection Remix 1.4. Looking at the thread for that ROM, it is AOKP based, with elements from CM9. What firmware are you on? You said you're on ICS, but you never mention specifically what ROM. Are you on stock? Then yeah, his apps probably won't work for you.
damn a shame it wouldnt work, try out go dialler tho if you want quick contacts access, from the dialler you just have to swipe to change to contacts... i used to use it but the themes arent as good as the ones we have lol
That would explain it I'm running LPQ stock...

I've not seen any mods for stock ICS to have this. A quick google search also turns up nothing for stock ICS.
So if you absolutely want this in ICS, you will need to flash a custom ROM.
EDIT to add: I should rephrase; you also have the option of using a third party dialer that has contacts integrated. But if you want to have the dialer that is included in the ICS ROM to have the contacts tab, you'll need to flash a custom ROM.

I would be fine with a custom rom based off one of the samsung sources but i dont frequent this side very often (usually on the asus transformer forum) to know which are good and which to avoid. Any suggestions?

Any solution without using a custom ROM ?

[Q] [REQ] Stock Messages App

I recently flashed stock rom on my phone. Everything's working fine except Messages. Whenever I try to open it, it says "App isn't installed". Can anyone please give me the Messages.apk from systems directory. please i'm not able to send or receive texts
Have you checked data/app to see if the apk is there? If it is both there and in system/app that's probably the cause of the problem. I attached mine anyway, it may or may not work though seeing as mine is the Mms.apk from a custom ROM.. Try it though, as long as you delete the current Mms.apk in system/app it should still work.

I figured what the problem was. Its because I was using nova launcher and I had restored a backup of the nova settings from what i had on a custom rom. So the shortcut on my home screen kept saying 'App isn't installed'. But thanks a lot! nonetheless for attaching the files! It might come to use of others facing similar problems in the future!
PS: Thanks to Bala_Gamer for telling me about the Nova Settings

[Q] Cannot revert back to stock mms.apk the reverted one.

Dear friends, I want to revert the inverted mms.apk to original white backgound on my n.e.a.r. rom, however when I try to replace the inverted mms.apk with the stock one it tells me that the app has stopped. Any ideas on how can i revert back to stock. Another question is why some apks install without problems and others cannot be installed. I mean if for instance i want to take a camera apk from one rom and place it to another it will not install correctly. Why is that.

[7/15][MOD][TW]CM10.1 MMS on TouchWiz - New Themed Options[DEODEX]

EDIT: See Post #3 for the same zip versions that are in the OP, but with different versions of the AOSP Mms.apk that you can choose from (based on popular demand).
Okay boys and girls, I think we may have done it. Right now I currently have the fully-themeable MMS from here working on my AT&T S4 TouchWiz ROM - NO WORKAROUNDS FOR SENDING MMS, AND GROUP MESSAGING FULLY FUNCTIONAL!! Additionally (thanks to @WoodburyMan), due to an incompatibility between the stock CM10.1 MMS app and image size limits imposed by AT&T (and possibly other carriers), the MMS apk within the zip has been modified to prevent the odd image re-sizing issues that have been so frustrating to many users.
NOTE: This WILL wipe your text messages during install, so make sure you back them up prior to install using TiBu or another method (there are several free SMS backup apps floating around the Play Store) and then restore after installing.
Due to the modifications to framework files, this mod is dependent upon the base of the ROM you are running. At this point in time, the changes in base were the most significant in the upgrade to MEA (the international i9505 non-carrier build). As such, it is crucial that you download the correct version of the zip attached to this post. For those that do not know how to tell what base you are on, open up your build.prop from /system and find the following line:
Code:
ro.build.version.incremental=
On the resulting build version number, note the last three digits. If the last three digits are MEA, MF2, MF4, MF8, MF9, or MGA, then download the "MEA+" zip file. If the last three characters begin with "MD" or "MK", download the "PRE-MEA" zip file. If it says MF3, download the "MF3" version. You'll notice very quickly if you've downloaded the wrong version, because pretty much every app that you open after flashing the file will eventually force-close and you will have the sudden urge to chunk your phone at your own head because you downloaded the wrong file.
Directions:
1) MUST be rooted with a custom recovery.
2) Download the zip file attached below.
3) MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP MMS/SMS BEFORE FLASHING!!! The zip will delete your current inbox. This is your second warning...if you post in this thread complaining about how this wiped your messages, anonymous/faceless internet users will laugh at you.
4) Flash the zip in custom recovery. I am using TWRP but any custom recovery should be fine A nandroid is always recommended to be on the safe side
5) After reboot, use a file explorer such as root explorer and navigate to system/app and rename KeyguardWidget.apk to KeyguardWidget.apk.bak. This keep the small keywidget clock being forced as the default.
6) PROFIT, you should now have fully functional AOSP 4.2 messaging with working group messaging and no workaround needed for MMS
For anyone who has issues, I made this restore zip that should restore you back to your original state prior to flashing this mod. No, it won't also restore your MMS messages. (See #3 above.) My assumption was that a majority of the users who will be flashing the app will be coming from the stock TW messaging app...so if you're already on an AOSP MMS (ie with the workaround), you'll need to manually make a backup of the Mms.apk PRIOR to flashing this package. So as long as you originally came from stock MMS or you manually backed up your previous AOSP app, you shouldn't need to revert to a Nandroid backup (although, as always, one is recommended prior to flashing anything new) - just copy your backed up Mms.apk to /system/app.
Once you get everything back online, make sure you followed all instructions perfectly and downloaded the right file. If you did and it's still not working, please post the following and I will try to get you up and running:
CARRIER (ATT, Verizon, etc.)
ROM (MintJelly, HyperDrive, Omega, etc.)
BASE (MEA, MF4, MDL, MDK, etc.)
Navigate to /system/app and /system/framework and copy "SecTelephonyProvider.apk" and "framework2.jar", respectively, to your sdcard (make sure they are the files from your ROM as if it were just clean-flashed...it won't do any good if you post the files that were installed when you flashed my zip). Post these here and I will dig into them to see if anything can be done for a fix.

SMS/MMS RECEIVED SCREEN-ON WORKAROUND
I have a Tasker profile (if you haven't heard of Tasker, it is a super awesome app that literally is unlimited in its capabilities for automating your phone) that takes care of this for me.
Download Tasker:

Download Secure Settings Tasker Plugin:

I have it set to turn the screen on for 5 seconds any time a message is received...but you can adjust it to your liking within the Secure Settings Plugin.
Here are some alternative zips containing different versions of the MMS app, based on several people requesting certain features within the app or differently-themed versions.
Feel free to participate and share any other version that you've had a good experience with - and I'll add them here!
NOTE: If you already have flashed one of my earlier zips and you're on AOSP, just download the Mms.apk file from this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43700174) and follow install instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43659066. I don't think that I'm flashing this successfully. After the flash, my stock TW sms app says that it is now uninstalled when I try to press the shortcut, but I do not know how to access the AOSP mms app on the phone. I can see that there is the MMS.apk in system/apps when using rootexplorer, but there is no shortcut to the app in my drawer. I have reverted using the provided zip and reflashed again to receive the same result.
Carrier: AT&T
ROM: Mint Jelly V3
Baseband: I337UCUAMDL
Build: MEA
I soft-bricked my phone last night using flashing the pre-MEA zip because I was stupid and careless. I installed the MEA zip this time. I really want to get this working so any help is very appreciated.
EDIT: I cannot post my SecTelephonyProvider.apk or framework2.jar because I am currently on my work computer.

If you set up a shortcut on your launcher for the Sammie MMS, then it's not going to work anymore because the app no longer exists.
What launcher are you using? You should be able to delete the shortcut you had and create a new one with the new MMS apk as the destination. Or you could just open up the app drawer and it should be in there somewhere.

I'm on nova launcher prime. I've tried going back to TW launcher to see if the AOSP shortcut popped up there somehow, but it wasn't there. It is also nowhere to be found on my app manager either.

It's a system app, so you won't be able to sideload it regardless.
This is so strange, I can't think of any reason why this is happening. Did you check to make sure SecMms.apk was appropriately renamed to SecMms.apk.bak?
Also make sure permissions on Mms.apk are rw-r--r--.
To make 100% sure they are, open up Terminal Emulator and run the following:
su
chmod 644 /system/app/Mms.apk
Also, please go to Settings -> More -> Application Manager -> All and then scroll down and tell me if you see "Messaging". If so, click on it just for kicks and clear app data/cache + reboot.

Just did the clean flash of MintJelly V3. First thing I did was attempt to flash your CM10.1 MMS zip. Still same result - no new shortcut anywhere to be found and no mms in my app manager. Did formatting my system have anything to do with messing this up?
EDIT: I now restored to an old MDL nandroid backup and attempted to flash the pre-MEA zip. Still no AOSP messaging on my phone. The last thing I can think of is restoring my phone to factory via kies when I'm home tonight and to flash this on a rooted stock TW rom. If that doesn't work then I'm out of ideas.
I had to do a restore because I was having image size problems. I reflashed this MMS and now when I click on messaging it says app not installed.
