16G storage? it shows only 11G :O - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My device say I have only 11G storage. does it mean my device is a fake?
P.s. I have installed roms for 10 times, isnt it for old roms files?
if yes, how should I remove them? my device is rooted.
thanks

Have you ever set up an ext partition for apps before? If you have you will only see the SD card space available for normal data.
You could always use n app on the pc , on windows say partition wizard to examine your card to show how many partitions it has...

what is an ext partition app? I dont know.
Does gs2 have drive partitions like windows hard drive?

11gb
16gb advertised end up being 14.9gb or there abouts of usable memory, when you take in to acount the 2gb of rom and some of the Samsung bloatware and the android system itself, 11gb is actualy just about right dont worry, your device isnt fake, it does have 16gb, its just used for a few things already

Mine shows 11gb too, always has, on all the different roms I've tried. I assume it is the way the storage is split for the device memory. Doesn't bother me as I have a 16gb sd card in their too.

thank you alll.

Please explain to a newbie the memory/storage

I understand on a PC memory is for active stuff and storage is for keeping things you need but can pull into memory for actual use.
If I go to task manager on this phone, it says total memory 803MB, used 588 - free 215MB.
Then it shows all applications 26MB
How do I see how much of my storage is in use? Is that 26MB of whatever sized storage card came with this phone?
ROM vs. RAM?
Thanks
That's showing your RAM, to see how much storage space your phone has left go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Storage use
Thanks - it says 8GB 5.5GB available. Internal storage .93GB.
Ever since these tablets and phones came out "memory" seems to be the generic term for just about everything in the device - RAM, ROM, NAND, EMMC, SD...
This is actually not different from a pc so why is the term memory used so freely? Traditionally RAM was/is considered memory. In the phone NAND is the ROM or flash memory. emmc is the internal storage. Sd is the external storage. But they're all called memory, even in spec sheets. Technically I suppose they are all memory, but why not address them with differing terms?
At one time they'd list it as 512 RAM/512ROM or flash rom. And storage would be called storage or sd card. It would save a lot of confusion and arguments that I've seen where two people are correct in what they've said, just incorrect in answering the question asked.

Yup the SD card has the green hornet in it, and the internal memory is like a 1GB free when you get the phone
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d

[Q] Mounting 16 GB internal storage on Windows/Linux

Question
SG S2 has 16GB of internal storage, how can I expose ALL of this to Windows or Linux? At the moment I am only able to see a 11.5GB partition. I need to be able to read(no writing necessary) all of the 16BG in order to perform data recovery.
Prelude
I had "USB storage damaged" problem on a stock handset. Where this message was showing up in notifications and internal storage could not be mounted. I had to format the internal storage in order to make it accessible again.
Since then I've been running various file recovery tools on internal storage by making it accessible to Windows through Settings > Wireless and network > USB utilities > Connect storage to PC. A lof of the data was successfully recovered using this method, but I had no luck recovering content of /sdcard/DCIM , which has family photos.
Problem is, Windows sees the drive as a 11.5 GB device. I understand that internal storage contains several partitions and only one of them is exposed to Windows. I need to run data recovery tools on ALL of the 16GB, how can this be done?
I would greatly appreciate any pointers or suggestions. Thank you.
If you had files on /sdcard, it would be on the 11.5GB partition.
It seems unlikely Android specific software would be better, but you could always give http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352515 a go.
@oinkylicious, thank you for the link, I'll give it a try.
I don't fully understand how internal storage is partitioned. How is 16 GB divided into different partitions? Camera pictures are stored on on /sdcard/DCIM , which partition would this be on?
Some data recovery tools are finding remains of two partitions, one FAT16 4 GB and one FAT32 12 GB, this seems to add up to 16 GB. I am assuming that because USB internal storage failed and had to be formatted, that all of the 16 GB were formatted.
Found how partitions are done on Galaxy S - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Series#Partitions
but no luck finding similar info for S2.
The answer isn't hard to find.

OMG WTF I was conned. Where's my 16 GB??? I WANT IT NAO!
Answer:
Your device uses 500 MB of space for the actual system software, plus around 2GB for your applications and their data storage. There are other partitions used for other system functions, and these take up some of the remaining space.

Is there any way to mount this 2GB partition(apps+data) on Windows/Linux?

internal Storage

QUESTION
the size of my internal storage is 11.4GB (which is 12GB from 16GB, so the phone uses the 4GB as system)
BUT when i format it, it says only 10GB (9.9GB to be exact) is available.
WHY? and what is using the 1.5GB rest of the storage?
Can it be cleaned up?
Another Question
So, as you can see i did a full format of internal storage to START OVER CLEAN
and i copied every thing to "A folder" in my external memory
BUT after i formated the internal memory i went to the External memory to find that my folder turned into a NON recognizable sort of file with 0kb of size.
the memory size shows that my files are in there but WHERE?
my little girl's birthday videos and pictures are in there so i really really need them back.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?

No idea what you are doing but to recover files you can try RECUVA .
Looks like you formatted external sd card .
jje
Take the card out and plug it into your computer.
(Or use my Usb mass-storage mode scripts around here somewhere if you're rooted, it makes no difference)
This is a known issue with the phone and exFAT, Fat32 seems to work fine.
Should the file really be damaged (and not only non-readable by the phone) you can use Recuva as suggested by the parent.
Thank you Guys for the help, and I GOT the whole thing back.
when i removed external memory and put it in my windows laptop (because i did it with mac the first time) i found the folder there.
i renamed it and put it back in the phone and it was OKEY.
QUESTION THOUGH:
as my first post i did this format to have a clean Empty 12GB of internal memory BUT i end up having less than 10GB even after format.
What is this and why can't i empty the rest?
You can't just format the internal memory as it is using a shared file system with the system. Can you tell us what you did to format it?
Sent from my GT-I9300
i connected it to the computer and did a format.
it was totally fine but it shows the Total size is 11.9GB and after format it still uses about 2GB and says 9.9GB available (2GB used)
the total size of the internal memory is 16GB and 4GB is used by the System but why 2 more is taken from the 12GB too
Probably installed apps. They share the available space with the folder you see as /sdcard/. Check your storage in the settings.

[Q] I'm stumped. /sdcard is only 2.8gb instead of 8.0gb. Why? How to fix?

My RAZR MAXX is currently running the stock ROM, rooted with safestrap recovery. I discovered this odd problem when I went to create a ROM image in safestrap and it only showed 1.9gb available internal memory. I formatted the internal memory and even did a full factory reset to see if the problem would change, but no luck. What in the world would cause my /sdcard partition to be so small? How can I resize it to take up all available free space?
Look up the software g-parted. It will help you to see the partitions on the SD card. Windows cant see the Android ( linux ) partitions.

Downloading the live ISO now. Do I connect my phone as a mass storage device or some other way for gparted to see everything?
//edit: This is the INTERNAL "/sdcard" partition, not an external card (/sdcard-ext).
Gparted shows /sdcard as a 2.75gb "unallocated" space. No filesystem that it can detect. /sdcard-ext (my actual card) is there with the right size as fat32. It does not show any other partitions on the device, and no option to make /sdcard any bigger.
Weird. I too am stock and running Project Lense boot. My /sdcard is showing correctly in Root Explorer as about 8 gig with 4.69 used and 3.23 free. 8 gig like it should be.
Does safestrap say 1.9G internal memory or internal storage? Storage is not the same as memory. Too many people use them interchangeably.
Just for ****s and giggles I downloaded a couple of partition info apps from the market. All of them that I downloaded were crap and didn't work. Even paid for one and it FC's. Uninstall click refund!!!

I factory reset and formatted. safestrap said I had ~2800mb of internal memory (/sdcard) available instead of the ~8gb I'm supposed to have. It's the same as it displays in the phone via Settings > Storage, or through gparted.
I know the difference between storage and memory, but the RAZR keeps referring to it as memory.

[Q] CM10 Internal Storage Partitions

I have internally flashed CM10 with a few hiccups along the way (see my other posts). Most recently, my NT reverted back to stock presumably after 8failed boots - still not sure how this happened as I thought I had wiped the drive.
Anyway, I have reflashed and now am noticing that there are two internal storage partitions. One is about 2gb and has all the apps data on it. The other is about 3.7gb and has nothing on it. I started getting warnings that I am running out of space, and I'm wondering why the 3.7gb partition isn't getting used. I know B&N restricted access to the entire HD, but I would be surprised if cm10 did? Anyone know what's going on? Is it possible that there is still some element of stock on the tablet causing these oddities?
The partitions are what they are unless you repartition, regardless of what OS you run. Of the 8GB on an 8GB NT approx 3GB is needed for the OS, so your numbers make sense.
Some apps look for an sd card and although they usually say so I have run across just say "out of space" when they don't find one.
Some ROMs switch storage locations so the internal storage acts as the sd card, but I don't know if any of the NT CM10/CM10.1 ROMs does this.

That makes sense about the partitions. But is there any way to use the 3.7gb partition? Right now everything wants to save to either the 2gb partition or the SD card.

In the ROM I use (Succulent's CM10) I do what I write in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39202813&postcount=2
