I just recently got the vibrant and got the OTA the same day, the gallery freezes about half the time, and about half of the time that it freezes i have to pull the battery, i cant get to task manager or put the phone to sleep and wake it up.
I searched google and there are alot of links regarding it but i didnt find any that gave any ideas to fix it.
I searched this forum and nothing came up. Anyway, I have a class 6 card, the gallery on my nexus is very quick and has never frozen, so it is definitely the phone.
In my experience with the g1, MT3g, N1 and now this vibrant, any time ive received an OTA it has come with costs, it always brings fixes and features but also causes new problems, large and small. So I dont doubt what I found while searching, that the gallery issue is a result of the recent OTA for the GPS fix. Anyway, its kind of silly that this awesome, technologically advanced device freezes when you open up one of the native apps. But can we do anything about it? And if not, is it likely that Samsung will address it in another OTA? thanks
edit: ive also just recently had my phone just turn off every day or so, and it wont power back on until i pull the battery. Maybe these 2 issues mean i have a defective device? Or is this par for the course with the tmobile galaxy s?
Overclock your phone to only run at 800-1000MHz. It completely solved this for me, 400-1000MHz still hiccups.
thank you, yet another reason to root i suppose...
So no way to fix that with stock phone? =(

That is odd, I've never had my gallery freeze or my phone reboot... Are you sure you don't have some rogue app? Perhaps you should factory reset and start fresh? Do you have any "junk" apps on your phone (stupid apps)?
I had a freeze on opening gallery right after the JI6 was released. I think it was trying to recreate the thumbnails from scratch and download pics from my Picasa acct.
Happened one time only and I actually had to pull the battery since it went unresponsive. Never had a problem after that.
~SB
perhaps unmount and remount the INTERNAL memory card. I've done this before just because I saw it as a suggestion and it recreated my gallery.
I having the same issue. I am ready to delete it and use a different app. Is that possible?

If you're rooted you can probably remove it.
I have tried factory reset so I don't think its a rogue app. I got the ota the day I got the phone so I can't compare before and after. If some people aren't having the issue period maybe a warranty replacement would resolve it. Of course, if we do end up getting froyo maybe that's something that will improve. Love the phone either way, I just get fed up with stuff like gallery freeze, random reboot, GPS issues, etc... stuff that i would think shouldn't get past product testing.
OP, this is discussed at the thread below. (use the search next time)
You are not the only one having this issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805784
Quick Summary:
- Even with the removable card blank, the Gallery still have the same issues.
- I did a complete wipe and still have the same issues.
- I cleared data through System Settings which recreated thumbnails and other data, still have the same issues.

Wow i am so sick of reading some loser tell somebody to "search next time". You'll be so very relieved to know that I actually did search, and all i found out is that you dont have any friends. But honestly I did find your thread, however it didnt seem to me to be on point with what i wanted to ask specifically. Your post says that "watchdog" told you your gallery is a "resource hog" and that you have to kill it. I dont know what watchdog is, nothing told me anything i just cant get into my gallery app very often, so that didnt seem applicable. Also, i got ji6 the day i got my phone so putting the gallery issue in the context you did ("since ji6 update") didnt mean anything to me, i dont anything about this phone pre-ji6 update. All I know is that my gallery app sucks, your thread was a bit technical for me to be able to apply to my particular issue
Anyway, now my gallery freezes every single time i initially try to open it, i have had to pull the battery 6 times in a row, it works after the pull. This has been my favorite android phone (of 4) but now i just want to set it on fire and run over it with my car. I guess Samsung and Android arent interested in making their $600 products work, does anybody know how i can fix my phone so that it does what it is supposed to? Also im not rooted which i assume probably makes it impossible for me to fix? thanks for any help.

I periodically find my phone in a frozen state/shut down (at least once a day or during the night)
I have the latest nightly CM9. I'm wondering if the freezes are caused by the ROM or i have some hardware problem or an rouge app or something.
Is there a way to see a log history of all processes so i could pin down what's happening just before a freeze? is there a better way to do this?
Thanks all

The biggest problem in cm9 is when you set your voltages/cpu too low, this can cause your device to lock up when turning it on again/opening lockscreen. Another problem which is usually the case is that you have a misbehaving app. The easiest way to counter these little niggles I have found is to do a complete wipe, format your sd card, format system etc, then attach sgs2 to pc via usb, mount your sd card and transfer cm9rom.zip to sd card. Only then flash your cm9 to your sd card in recovery after unmounting and disconnecting from pc of course. This lets you kind of narrow down the problem as you will know that you do not have any files/folders/apps from a previous rom install that are causing issues. I always do this when installing a rom, even if it is just a nightly update, since I used to get problems like yours, I do this now and have 98% less issues. But what I think you have most likely done is to underclock your device too greatly. Also, if you are using cpu profiles, make sure you are not setting screen off profile too low, otherwise it will most certainly freeze on open. Anyways, cover these bases and you should be golden. It is not a rom problem.

check if you've installed any apps that prompt the auto shut-off of your phone
previously I had this problem before by then I realized it's due to the installation of one of my fault apps.

first of all,i think this is happening because of any new app,try to remember when it was started(maybe that time you installed any app and now that app shutting down mobile? or just go to task manger and clear each app that was running and also clean memory. if problem is gone and its occur again after rebooting mobile its maybe a Rom Bug,you need to change your Rom,but before doing that try to clear apps through task manger. and see what happens
i hope that helps you
Well first of all ...
Are you rooted? What is your Rom/kernel?

Thanks for the replies guys ok, here are some more info and observations.
I was originally using CyanogenMod 9.1 when this happened. At first, I tried wiping cache and dalvik cache. But it was still the same. After a few more shut downs, it got worse. It got to the point that it shuts down after the boot animation. So, I used Clockwork Mod to revert me back to rooted stock ROM. It's not as worse as CM9, but I still get shut down. Now, here are the observations I made:
1. This only happens when my phone is unplugged. It works fine otherwise.
2. This consistently happens when I connect to the Internet, for example via a browser, didn't matter whether it was Chrome or Dolphin. Offline reading via RSS or Pocket is fine. I opened FB unplugged and I got shut down as well, so I guess it's safe to say that connecting to the Internet triggers it. When accessing the Internet while unplugged, shutdown is immediate and imminent. Plugged, I can surf just fine.
3. It also gets triggered when I play a game, but my shutting down is not immediate, unlike the one above. I am playing only one game at the moment (Great Big War Game). And I am able to play a long while before getting shut down (around 30 mins)
It wasn't like this a couple of days ago, and I didn't install anything new outside Google Play updates, this is not counting the two logcat apps I installed this morning to try to diagnose the problem.
Is there a way for me to find out what's wrong via the logcat?

maybe its a cache problem of your Browser,so try to clear cache of your Browser and if its not working Flash a new stable Rom( i recommend you Sweet Rom,find it on XDA,its very stable and smooth)
and flash that rom with Hydracore kernel.
hope that helps you
have a nice day
Hi thanks for the additional info. It seems that you have the issue persisting on a stock Rom?
Have you tried to wipe on a safe kernel (if on ics)?
Do disable any overclocking or any scripts.

Guys, just a quick update. I sent it off to the service center (reverted to stock and hid all traces of being rooted). They reflashed the phone (they say it's their standard practice to do that before considering hardware defects) but the problem still didn't go away. So, I think my issue is hardware-related
This problem is not software related. It is most definitely hardware. The phone is flawed and shuts off on it's own under various conditions, all hardware related. I am not able to post externally due to not having enough posts yet. However, I have had the same issue on 3 Galaxy Note 2's from Verizon. I made a video that shows exactly what is going on and posted it on the following website...
wwwDOTgalaxynote2shutsoffDOTcom
You will have to paste that link in to a new browser and replace the DOTs accordingly to get to it, but once you see the video, you will be enlightened. Be sure to read the details I provided on that site as well. They go in to detail about the problems that I have had and the lack of proper support that Samsung is willing to provide.
Take a look at the video I made here if you can't get to that site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjLn2yikYnI
suddenly my samsung galaxy s3 keeps freezing and I have to make a hard reset every time. I tried to make factory reset, or wipe factory reset, but the same problem.
what should I do?
are you on SDS-safe firmware?
Dude, instead of creating yet another post with this, you could have searched to quite easily find out your phone is halfway dead and should be sent back to samsung for repair as soon as possible. Make it safe to return if you messed with it (flash original stuff, reset counter, etc, read a bit if you don't know what to do, it's all over these forums) and just take it in.
Don't take this the wrong way but you'd think it's common sense to just return any product (not even phone related) that it's malfunctioning instead of asking what to do to random people in a third party forum

use the sds safe précautions to prevent freezing
Envoyé depuis mon GT-I9300 avec Tapatalk
And what are the sds safe precautions or where can I find it?
just search in the general section
Device:GT-I9300 32gb
I have the same problem, this seems to be firmware related to me, the phone works in safe mode but this is really crappy now. I don't think there should be a return unless it's the only fix. Will try and flash JB and update the post.
Edit: Is that sds the Sudden death thing. I tried searching but no results come up. I am a new comer to Samsung as their devices sucked for ages and they still seem to do. Please can some one advise us(the op and myself and future people with this problem) on what is the main cause of this issue that a hard reset fixes it. But for my device,it doesn't die it stops functioning.
This is how I get this problem, my phone is rooted, but it runs fine only when there is a app crash the phone locks up and thats it.
what i tried: I tried to back up my data so i could save myself from reinstalling all my app. I hard reseted the phone and the phone functioned again
but after restoring my data the phone locks up again. Now my phone works about 5sec from normal boot but then locks up. It works fine in safe mode. So really where is issue? Is an app is making the whole OS to jam there has to be a simple fix for this.
Please don't say return the device, thats the dumbest thing to ever say. We want to over come the problem not ignore it/get rid of it.
Thanks for your time guys
Try this.

I was getting similar behaviour too. Phone would freeze after making calls, sending msgs, using facebook, searching on google, basically random points anywhere. Went through uninstalling apps, did a factory reset, and through some trial and error finally pinned down where my problem was at least. It was caused by the latest version of MixZing. Was crashing before frequently, and after uninstalling it I've been using my phone fine all day with no crashes at all. Still potentially early days, but if I don't report back then that solved it for me.
A simple solution
ok guys.. this is something i tried and has been working for me for more than two days now:
the problem seems to be in the download manager included in the new android software so what you simply have to do is to disable this application whenever you're not using it.. you can do so in the settings>> applications manager>> view ALL>> select DOWNLOAD MANAGER and DISABLE..
of course this will stop the play store from functionning and will stop any automatic updates but will prevent the phone sudden death...
All you have to do when you want to download any new apps or update existing ones is to enable the download manager and i suggest before doing that to clear the RAM memory and try to be gentle and patient with the phone...
Just keep working like that till ANDROID finds a solution in the next update and your phone will be fine.. in the end its better than killing the machine with every freeze.
Remember to be patient and work slowly when the download manager is enabled
Reply if it worked for you

My first post here. Thanks for this tip. My phone was freezing every 3 minutes and so I did what you suggested after all other suggestions (except rooting - as I was worried I might brick the phone if it froze while rooting) didn't work. Anyway, just a few seconds after I hit "DISABLE", my phone froze! So I thought it's probably not working, but since the reboot, it hasn't crashed. Thanks!:good:

the same thing is happening to me and i have no clue why its happening it just like 3-4days ago but i have installed only clash of clans and clash royale in my phone. he most interesting thing is that all your phone feature will work but the screen will not for almost 20-30mins then it will recover on its own. all the call features are working well but no response from phone. my conclusion is this phone is totally a mess and i dont even know how i managed t use this device for 4years! it got super laggy after 6-7 months of use. Whatever i went to the service centre and they told that i need to change the motherboard of my s3 costing 130$.
As you can see, I'm new to this forum. I apologize if I have posted in the wrong forum. Please do move it to the correct one kindly.
I've bought a Karbonn Smart A2+, and I've run into some issues. The middle physical button of the three on the bottom of the phone seems to be malfunctioning. It sends me back to the homescreen every few seconds, like it's been repeatedly spammed down even if I'm not holding it down. I'd like to inquire if there's any way I can turn this button off? Or even better, is there any fix for this?
The phone arrived and when I unboxed it, it did this. I went out to a local phone salesman who also undertakes repair, but the phone worked perfect en route when I reached there too (I looked like an idiot trying to explain whats wrong with my phone).
I thought it had fixed itself, so I went back home and it started malfunctioning again. I tried everything: removing and replacing sim and sd card, wiping the battery and the phone, giving it a nice hot oil massage. Nothing seems to help.
I'd also like to inquire about the process to root this device, if possible. I'd also like to know the benefits of a rooted Android as opposed to a non-rooted one.
Thanks in advance!
No, it doesn't. Also, it seems to happen randomly, sometimes working perfect and most of the time its a pain in my ass.
No, its not overcharged nor is it plugged into my pc.
Oh that's terrible... My phone fixed itself, now it only does this when I try to play a game like subway surfers. Is there any way I can disable the button for some apps?
Try Uninstalling apps
Due to Low Memory, maybe its a Pain to use dis device... try uninstalling some useless apps, ... try rooting it with FRAMAROOT v1.6.1... maybe it'll work, if doesn't,,, try flashing stock ... search for link.. guess its on gsmforum....:good::good::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
