I want to build a rom from AOSP for the Nexus S, I am a beginner and this will be my first rom. I see many current Roms have tweaks already setup like ram optimization and speed enhancements. Is there a central place to find these or are they all developed individually? I would like to add some of those to speed up my ROM.
What is the standard way to include tweaks like that? I obviously don't want to go and steal someone's work so here I am asking.
Thanks for the help experts!

I am not a developer.but as a user i want something interesting.
But i can be your tester and let you know about your Rom.
I have seen many custom Roms and tried it on my SGS 2 i am not happy, all the roms say they have changed this and that but no visible changes just some color changes and EYE wash if any.
If there is any developer who can do something different rather than using the stupid Touch Wiz/Stupid MIUI which is like IOS .
let me know i will try it on my SGS2 if i am happy i will donate as much as i can.
Or give me pure google i know u will talk about drivers for specific devices include it your rom and give atleast pure google experience.
Every custom Rom change log is always long they say they changed so many things but i dont see any difference as a user and not seen so much problems in stock to fix. i test custom roms and i go back to my stock by restoring.
I am talking about development not modifying the existing software.
So many custom roms are out there but non of them are interesting i mean nothing new.
The fact is stock is excellent, there's not much wrong with them, if you want aosp try cm7.
We as users have a large choice of roms to choose from, the next best would be to have cm7 with some aspects of touchwiz but impossible to do with closed drivers.

Sounds like all you want is a new launcher. Search the market and try different ones out, or search for video examples of them, there's plenty out there.
You could take a look at what claystone 3d launcher is upto.

Hey People,
as I am no Developer and have absolutely no knowledge in programming/hacking I am really adicted to the Stuff the Dev´s deliver here. I can not count how many great Roms have been on my Ace the last weeks, but if I had a Dollar for each...
Parallel I was always trying the stock Roms. Now, today, I finally found a config that really made me happy ! Speedy, stable, daily useable and with a lot of stuff in it. Maybe some of the humans here (not godlike Devs ) are interested as it is really easy and you need no knowledge about anything on the other side of the Touchscreen ;-)
First, Credits go to all the DEVELOPERS out there who made this hard, smart and beautiful work. Without them, the Ace would just be a "I would love to be an iPhone but I failed..." Project ;-)
I will not tell you where to get the files but here is a hint : you find them all HERE in the wonderful XDA Forum
Ok, here I go, remember, anything you do ... do it on your own risk, don´t blame me or any of the People around, it´s just YOU !!! And read the Tutorials !!
I started with a stock Rom, xxkph, this is Gingerbread 2.3.4 then I downloaded the "Deodex and Root" Stuff from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118048
Now I flashed the CF-Root (File and tut can be found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158197)
And finally this new piece of amazing stuff from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336240
That´s it, now you have a great Ace, really, it runs like hell !!!
Add the Miui Launcher (QQ I think) and some other nice tools like xperia reboot options, Fancy Widgets, Android Agenda Widget, GTasks, Google Translator, XDA APP OF COURSE ;-) Friendcaster ( you can also use the stock SNS Stuff for some things) ES File Explorer which is free and has Options for Root access ! and, Titanium Backup, a great tool !
Once again, thanks to all the Devs and Programmers out there who are providing so very fantastic stuff to us !!!
Greetings
even after all that,it still a stock rom ,a aosp base rom is defenetively better

It sure is but that wasn't the Point :-D with all this doing by yourself you're learning by doing a bit I think and some people may like the stock stuff included. Plus the duration of the Battery maybe.
And they will be able to delete what they don't like by themselves using Es

Hello and this is my first ROM I'm working on, it's in development and I will be releasing it here when I get stable builds.
It's as the name implies. Pure Google, nothing else. No mods of any kind, there are Clean roms but they have cyanogenmod and other things installed, this is pure.
Now this is a DEV thread for my ROM but I am a new developer so any help from other Devs would be great as I do have some issues which came up in my last build and won't go away.
Current issues:
Resolution is way to high and is causing crashing and slowing down
Wifi and Data not working
I have taken things from the SE rom but that seems to be where my problem started so I shall backtrack and see if it helps.
In future I may add things to the rom but I want to keep it as pure as possible!
Are you building this from AOSP? What are you using for your base?
Looking forward to this.
Before I go to AOSP or other sources I am attempting it from the Xperia sources for the Android SDK, it installs via recovery and runs just very buggy, although the resolution was way to high so everything was very small and hard to select, was going slow as well.
Since I added Wifi and bluetooth and changed the lcd size now it doesn't boot.. I am a complete beginner at this. I'll go have a look at AOSP sources now.
EDIT: Okay AOSP pretty much is just google android.. But I tried going a slightly different root, I used a prebuilt image and extracted from it. And on the AOSP site I can't find anywhere about downloading the stock image.. it's all about developing apps.. Any help would be great.
You could get aosp images from htcdev as well, for the nexus one
Both the phones share the same chipset,
You could also go into the nexus one dev section and find a pure Google rom there
Hope you get your port working
There is a prop in build.prop
ro.lcd.density=xxx
Set that to 240
For wifi take all modules from xperia /system/lib/modules and
wlan_Mac and wlan_tool

have you "built" this or "cooked" this?
and if cooked....where are you taking your files to cook from?
and why not post us a beta/alpha/test preview?
Sent from my X10S using xda premium
Thanks for all the info, I have a better understanding now and think I know where to head, I am cooking it I think.. I am using kitchen to package it but I am taking images that exist from the SDK and stuff so I guess I am cooking it yeah.
I'll put an update together, test it on my phone and hopefully it boots correctly. My computer is doing some cleanup so I'll put it together in a short while.
Okay so I've been through HTC Dev but couldn't find any stock's to download.
Also think I got a working zip.
EDIT: Okay the LCD Density did not help, the resolution is still very high. Is there another setting to change this?
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
qemu.sf.lcd_density=240
ro is for screen and qemu is for the home/launcher
you can try different setting
e.g 180/240 or 140/200 ect..

Hello everybody,
since i am new to android roms, i found the amount of available roms pretty overwhelming, just making it harder for me to choose one that could fit my needs.
I was searching for a feature comparison of the (or some) available roms, something like a table or so, but i wasnt able to find one. Is there something (regularly) updated like this out there?
It would be very nice, if you guys could recommend me some roms to take a look at, or to link some resources for a general overview of different roms!
My (personal) needs for a rom:
Its very important for me, to use a stable rom, which allows usb-debuging because i am developing android games.
I would love to use the latest android version and a rom which allows to update to later versions. And updating without deleting all the installed apps and files would be heaven on earth.
Motion controll is nice, but as far as i could extract from this threads, there is no stock jelly bean rom with this feature enabled, because its Samsung related, is that right?
I hope to find some answers on my questions.
Regards, psdev
Try wannam lite. Its my favorite

Maybe give a shot on Android Revolution HD and also Omega Rom. These roms are my favourite.
I saw that omega rom seems like the most famous one. But as i told i have no idea how it compares to others, could you please explain what it makes it so famous? (is it recently updated, does it has more features...)
But thanks so far for your answers!
Hi All,

Stock-Samsung ROM i.e touchwiz
AOSP-Android Open Source Project, this is the pure form of Android that comes pre-installed in all Nexus devices.
AOKP-Android Open Kang Project, based off AOSP but with few more additions/features.

Its all in the stickies thread .

Addition to previous posts:
AOSP: Pure android
AOKP: more customization
Stock: CrapWiz (some may like it)
I prefer AOSP based roms because they are the way Google intended android to be, but no other rom than stock (or stock based) will have samsung features like smartstay.
You can try modified stock rom: have all default options + can add another features
