I'm new to Android and have two questions about this thing:
1. My home network uses static ips, pretty much everything else in the world uses dynamic. Constantly switching my settings is beyond aggravating (what idiot thought it would be a good idea to set ip info on a MOBILE and WIRELESS device on a per-adapter basis instead of per connection?). Is there any way I can make this damn thing auto-switch? Just about every other WiFi device I own can.
2. I have more than one g-mail account, and when putting something in my calender, etc it seems to just add it to whatever account it wants. Is there any way to choose which account to add it to, or just make it sync certain items with one account?
Thanks

Hello all,
This is my first post here.
Id like to start by thanking everybody on this site for the volumes of info. You guys rock!
Q: why do strange apps have full permissions?
I have learned so much from everyone here since addopting android. I've recently rooted my thunderbolt and i've been looking at alot of the system info. There is alot of stuff that seems quite questionable (and slightly shady). For example there is a widget running in the background constantly called htc clock widget. This has prettymuch every system permission, and i have no idea why. Also checkin services has the same permissions. I've tried to research both apps extensively but i can barely find any info, every one seems to have questions, but no answers. I might be paranoid, but if something is going to have access to that much info i'd like to know why it needs it. Actually the only info i could find on the subject was through "bing" which seems sort of strange to me. If anyone has any info regarding this, i would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you in advance
Well if you think HTC is stealing your info from the clock widget you are very paranoid about technology lol. What permissions worry you about it. Need to be more detailed than "every permission. "
Mah BAMF Thunderbolt
Mah BAMF Thunderbolt
Well i dont know how to copy from the app info so ill summarize.
Both clock widget (not the clock mind you), and checkin service have as follows
Messages: read attachments, edit sms and mms, read sms and mms, recieve sms and mms
Location: course and fine
Personal info: calender events, read write browser history and bookmarks
Network: create bluetooth connections, full internet access
Your accounts: google mail, manage account list, use credentials
Storage: modify sd contents
Phone calls: modify phone state, read phone state identity
System tools: bluetooth, change network connectivity, change wifi state, change wimax state, modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping, retrieve running apps, set time zone, write access point name, write sync settings
Well thats what the widgets got, seems like alot to me. Htc checkin service i have read about and i guess its googles way of recieving anonymous user data. And i guess you can disable it in the build.prop. Any ideas?
How do you figure the time stamps get in your messages, files, etc...? Something has to relay the time to the apps so it's correct.
Hi,
firstly, let me introduce myself:
My name is Tony and from my signature and amount of posts, you can see, I am a very active XDA user and used to do a lot of first and second level support for the blueangel and the blackstone and today my SGS2 arrived, which is my first native android phone. As soon, as i figured out all the tiny beginner's questions, i will start supporting this awesome device for all you fellow users out there.
But for now, excuse me, that I have to ask a few stupid questions that I encountered while setting up the device:
1. My phone is set to English (US) and my keyboard and voice input options are set to German (so that writing or voice inputting sms and german addresses are easier). However, Vlingo does not exactly support the dual language and sometimes produces problems when reading out english information, anybody else experiencing mixed language problems there? any advice?
2. i decided to set my up contacts from scratch. i put in all the correct formal names for my contacts, but when i connect these users to their respective facebook accounts (who are sometimes based on nicknames), the display name automatically changes to the facebook name, while i prefer the formal name. is there a way to change it?
3. contacts allow me to add several im accounts, e.g. ICQ. when i click the icq# of a user, it opens up im and states that only windows live, google talk and yahoo are supported. is there a way to either connect that to the official icq for android, or add other messengers to the stock im? if not, why bother inputting all the information, if one cannot use it?
i wonder why nobody else seems to experience problem #2.
i found it again here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6067
apparently, when you connect contacts through one or more platforms, like facebook, twitter, last.fm, skype... and there names vary, your contacts app will always prefer the last name with the latest letter in the alphabet. in my case, there is one contact first name r. last name b., but one facebook, he goes by another variation of his name, "zu b.", so contacts prefers the facebook name, as z is greater than b. there is no logical reason why facebook names should be preferred to the phone's own stored name. after all, i entered those names because i wanted to find the contacts by that name. why does the phone tell me, my choices are no good and facebook's are better?
strike issue #1 and #3, i will find a workaround some time, but it would be extremely nice, if someone could check if this contacts issue is present in their device and firmware?
i have ke7 dbt (latest german stock rom).
My nexus one does the same thing. If I sync contacts with Facebook it changes to their Facebook displayed name. I'm still not clear on exactly how it does it too.
i tried several ways of bypassing the issue, starting by assuming the sorting of contacts would be determined by the regular ascii order of letters, or linux's, so i tried renaming every contact to minuscules, so R.B. -> r.b. which didn't help and i wouldn't even bother starting any contact with z or any symbol, as that would render the letter navigation bar on the right useless.
so the only way i could bypass the issue was to sort and display contacts by first name. after many years of windows mobile use i'm having trouble getting used to it but apparently, there is no other way so far.
if anyone else has trouble with this, please go to http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6067 and star the issue and post your experiences.
Few qns:
1. I know we cannot delete the first Microsoft Account associated with the device, but can we at least delete the email part of it? It automatically created a hotmail email account/tile and started syncing it. I don't want email on my phone, its my primary email and I usually have no security on phone. I know I can disable email sync and it will remove the tile but anyone can re-enable it
2. Is there a way to select only specific people to appear on the People Tile? It allows disabling certain accounts but not certain people (either blacklist or whitelist), I don't want random people checking out my phone and wondering if they've been selected to specially appear on my home page! Can it only display certain "Favourites"?

Resolved, Thanks
3. The status bar shows no indication of whether it is connected to 2G or 3G network (Data is disabled so can't use the E/H icons), is this normal?
4. The Settings>Mobile network Highest Speed settings does not show a 4G option, I only have 2G and 3G
5. Marketplace does not show all the available on the home page (of the Marketplace or on the live tile), if I goto a specific app, THEN it shows the update and also reflects this on the home page and live tile.
For your qn #5, I've experienced the same.

I was rigorously researching this and someone elsewhere seemed to suggest that this is deliberate and the Microsoft provides an option for the developers to do this. i.e There is a time lag between when they become available and when the actual notifications are pushed out.
This did not seem intuitive. The only reasons I can think of this happening are:
1) Pushing update notifications out to all instantly would cause mass damage in case of severe bugs, this way they know only a few hardcore users will check the app individually and install it and they have time for a pseudo-beta test.
2) The update notifications get pushed from the server and this server is only polled/or pushes them at certain times a day or week.

New feature in Windows Phone 8: Groups!
http://winsupersite.com/windows-phone/windows-phone-8-tip-share-only-certain-people
Make a group with the people you want to see/interact with most often. Pin THAT to the Start menu. Only those people show up...
When you tap the tile you are taken to the group, but you can still swipe over to all people easily, so it still gives you access to the full people hub.

I knew about that but it allows anyone to re-enable it at any time without re-entering the password, that's hardly ideal. But I am currently using that as a workaround anyway. Thanks for the help
Also thanks for the Groups suggestion, will use that workaround.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but can I ask why you would not have any security on the phone? You can always have pin number set-up.
However, I can see a case where you have to hand over your phone to may be family and you don't want them to go through your email.
A non-ideal solution is to set-up a separate MS account for the phone. Of course, this means that you'll leave all your other stuff (Xbox gamertag, calendar etc) behind and have to start over again.
Whats up guys?
I have two Google accounts that I use on my tablet. A primary one that I use for Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, etc.... and another one that I use for the sole purpose of purchasing apps. This happened due to limitations in my country so I made this other account with US data so I can buy apps with it.
This other account doesn't have any noteworthy data about me. I don't sync anything to it except apps.
So my question is. Can I share that account with other friends/family? so they can take advantages of some of the apps i purchased? Keep in mind that nobody can really purchase anything for themselves in my country (Egypt) and I went through hoops to get that one working and credit added to it, so I'm thinking about sharing this account with one or two people.
So can I do that? and if I did. Is there anything wrong with it? Are there any risks involved?
Thanks in advance and sorry if I posted this on the wrong forum.
According to Apple, the Apple ID can be associated with a maximum of 10 devices, I have read somewhere, that it was the same with Google. I have seen the same Google account used on 3-4 devices without any problem. If you want to share your account with 3 more people or devices, I would say go ahead. But if the number of people or devices exceeds more than that, then I would suggest to contact Google and ask them the upper usage limit of a single account on different devices.
The first thing that came to my mind, was to be careful and not syncing your data with that account (even by mistake).
Also.. make sure you trust them, I think this is obvious
In a bit of a bad situation, and it is an oversight on my part but also from a legitimate amnesia issue so be gentle
I am moving from an S4 to a new phone but a lot of accounts (an email, twitter, instagram.. some others) are linked to a dead email (a domain I had and let drop), and I've lost the password (to both the accounts and the emails), and I'll lose them forever if I can't move them to my new one.
Horrible issue but I need to turn my old phone in to AT*T within the week so I don't have time to contact sites for support on this. If I can maintain temporary access through a move to my new phone I'll be content and finally work with contacting these sites to update the information on these.
Does Androids Tap & Go move accounts like that without requiring password re-entry? What do I do?
I do have root on my S4 if Titanium Backup is the way to go.
Still looking for help..
