You can download the Gingerbreak apk (search the forums) and use it to root. No need to connect to PC and all. And yes, you can easily unroot.

But i have seen at forums that its not possible to root 2.3.3 stock rom (V20B) with gingerbreak 1.2
I dont want to break my phone !!
Rooting is the least risky thing you can do to your phone. Use the link you first posted. The process is a bit iffy, so if it fails for you ask on that thread or PM the people for whom it succeeded.

Yeah, if that method doesn't work, then downgrade to 2.2 firmware and then use Gingerbreak. Here's the how-to thread.

I am looking for a possible way on 2.3.3 stock. But this is my first time.I never rooted before so i am looking for ROOT+UNROOT Option ( for 2.3.3 stock)
Anyone please clear my doubts.
Imo doing a factory reset removes your root. Never tried it though, making an educated guess.

See if you want it to be rooted/unrooted in a single step, then Gingerbreak is the best option.
Since you're on 2.3.3, first downgrade to 2.2 using KDZ updater. I already gave the link. Then use Gingerbreak.
If you do not want to take any risk at all, then forget about rooting and continue using your phone.

To all of you that are tired of the long, not so simple way to root your Optimus One, I just came across this. Although it says it's for gingerbread, it worked for me. I'm using original 2.2.1 firmware.
Hope you're gonna find this useful!
hi cristi_bostan2005,
thanks for the information. I have tried and it also work with Android Version 2.2.2, software version v10f-FEB-24-2011
Does this mean no need of downgrading any more to install custom roms? Also is it safe to use it on our phone?
this is great news, though I'm still on v10b
where is detail i m not able to see it
thanks for this i rooted my phone using this was running froyo 2.2.2 with out the requirement of downgrade was able to root the phone successfully
? I am not seeing any info regarding app...what is the method?
For those that didn't see the link, here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
It's an app, similar to z4root that can root your phone, without you needing to downgrade as before. It's very simple.
Follow the link, download the latest apk to your phone, install it, run it and that's it!

How many minutes did it take to root the phone? Mine is taking forever... :-S
not very long... about 30 seconds to 1 minute i think ??
Going to reboot and try again then.
but:
Some important things to know:
- You must have USB debugging enabled on your device
- You need to have an SD card (formatted and) inserted
- The APK must be install to device, NOT SD card
- The exploit may take a while to run, but not more than 10 minutes, if it does, get me a logcat, and reboot the device
- Always reboot between root attempts!
- While (temporary?) root access may be attained, due to locked bootloaders, efuses, S-ON, and whatnot this may still not work on your device
- The GingerBreak exploit should not be used to attain temproot and continue using the device. It fscks vold, you do not want to be running like that. You want to reboot! So if the root doesn't stick, you (still) have a problem.
Nope, it wasn't running properly, I waited more than 10 minutes.
I've rebooted and tried to run it again and this time it rooted the phone in less than 30 seconds. It was something that was amiss I guess.
Rooted in few minutes on V10E (2.2.2) Italian No Brand.
is it permanent root? i'm wondering if the phone can still be Unrooted after using this app? sorry for the noob question.

I'm still waiting for an updated tool to root this; with 2.1 I've had serious issues with X10i software on my X10a hardware and I'm not wasting my time with X10i this time.
That means when X10a is available, I need to root it. So far, only X10i is available pre-rooted.
I wouldnt of thought it will be too long till one of the devs work it out, im not sure how the pre-rooted ones work, and is a little more faffing around that id like at the moment, plus im quite happy with the bog standard 2.3.3, just want to restore my apps and stuff really
I don't think devs would root it, no point. Pre rooted roms work great.

well not everyone wants a generic rom, or one from another region, some people prefer certain roms, such as their operator roms and for people in the US some of them have problems with the X10i roms, and as such are stuck with the 10a roms or something like that, so thats where the seperate root comes into its own, as people can choose when they want to root.

Look, It's possible to get a stock pre-rooted 2.3 onto our phones so looking for a way to directly root 2.3.3+ is a waist of time for our devices. You won't find any devs trying to root 2.3.3+ unless they are trying to gain root access on a device that can't be downgraded to an older version that there is a known rooting exploit for.

Best of luck finding an exploit!!!
rageagainstthecage doesnt work
psneuter doesnt work
gingerbreak doesnt work
If u are lucky in few months MAY BE a new exploit might be discovered...
As for "operator customizations" u can flash ur regions fw then take a system dump and keep adding operator customized files on the prerooted roms...
P.S.: why is this question thread posted in dev section?

I'm an X10a owner currently running Wolf's X10i ROM. I'm a Roger's customer to boot. There isn't a single thing wrong with running the X10i firmware. Personally I've never ever experienced issues with anything X10i related. Give it a shot! My phone is ridiculously fast and doesn't have a single issue. The battery life alone is worth the jump. I've been on my phone all day reapplying settings/apps/etc and I just now hit under 50% battery. That's over 10 hours of consistent use.

Maybe the problem wasn't his answer, it was your question?
You asked how long it would take for 2.3.3 to be rooted. As he responded, it already is. Looking at the first page in this section of the forums shows that very clearly as there are numerous ROM postings that clearly state "Rooted".
Perhaps a better question would have been "How long do you think until we have a way to root without having to flash a pre-rooted ROM?"

I have a Desire-Z and it had GB, but the forums I followed insisted that I must downgrade it to Frodo before rooting, as there is currently no way to root it in GB. So that is what I have done and I have root. Like you I want to go to GB but keeping root. I'm pretty sure there is a way, but I dont yet know how. That method is what I too am looking for. So there would need to be a way to preserve the root you've got while upgrading to GB. If upgrading causes you to lose root in GB, you wont be able to get it back without downgrading again unless someone comes up with a method that works for GB. If you find a way before me, let me know. Cheers.

The method at briefmobile has always worked for me. However, you might also want to look at swiftks' "[Updated 2-11-2012] THE BEGINNERS (N00B) GUIDE!!! N00BS LOOK HERE FOR YOUR HOW TOs" that should be pinned at the top of this forum. There is a section in it called "HOW TO ROOT YOUR DEVICE ON ANDROID 2.3.4:".
canopic, root methods vary from phone to phone. It is quite possible to root the Atrix on gingerbread. I don't know anything about the Desire-Z though.

So...I returned my phone to stock, which was a nightmare because I already had a devs ICS and the instructions (for returning to stock) are for UCKH7...got endless errors and whatnot...
Finally figure it out. So now I'm back to 2.3.6 and I figured I connect to Kies and get the At&t ICS version. No problem...got it!
Now...if I want to root it and instal cwm, how would I do it? I mean the methods at the dev section are for the gingerbread os, right?
Any help will be appreciated. :good:
just flash a kernel with Odin. Far as I know it should work fine. Then again I haven't had to do it for a long while.

EDIT: After a little more thought if I were you I wouldn't do anything else to your phone since you already flashed the kernel with the 99% confirmed eMMC "superbrick" bug (see the first link) until you research the best way, least possible chance to bricking your phone... Maybe Entropy512 can help with the best way to flash a new package!! GL if anything ever did happen I sure hope Samsung would give you a replacement.....
Another question (might be related)
Hey all,
I have just got a brand new i777, I just wanted to upgrade it to ICS and sim-unlock it.
The upgrade is to be done through kies, no problem in that.
The sim-unlocking is the issue .. i know it was easy in gingerbread to root and use herlroz app .. but now is there an easy way without using ODIN or flashing a kernel to sim-unlock this phone on the official ICS ?
