Strong Wi-Fi? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had an issue with my s2. i was stuck at Menorca airport after an 8 hour delay. i spent the firs 30mins walking around the lobby looking for wifi and got nothing.
couple hours later sat next to someone with an iphone 3g and he mentioned he was glad of the free public wifi - free public wtf I said!
Sure as it was, he could find and connect to a lounge wifi. My s2 couldn't find a dam thing!!!
I checked my settings:
Wifi was on
Network notification was on
Use packet data was on
Data Roaming was off - As I don't want O2 to screw me over.
Could it simply be that the wifi signal wasn't strong enough to get the wifi? Eventhough the Iphone 3G had three bars where I was sat?
Could data roaming someone interfere with connecting to wifi abroad?

KH3 modem improved WiFi signal i find .

I'm on KF3...
Can I install one of the other variants of stock rom such as KH3?
If so I assume I need to CF-Root then overwrite with the variant stock rom/kernel I want?
And then CF-Root again the new variant stock rom/kernel?

Yes, the SGS2 has not-so-good wifi signal. Sometimes I can't get a full signal when I'm 2m away from the router. Nevertheless, I've found places where my phone was connected, and other devices couldn't, so it's not that bad. I'm also on KH3 modem.

Modem bad reception in Canada Galaxy s2

Hey all, i thought i would start a thread about an issue that many canadians seem to have with the GS2, it seems to have been beat to death but there is no actual solution.
Im currently using the GS2 with Telus, its a wcdma/3G/H/H+ carrier using the frequency 1900 mostly and 850 at times on the cdma network, i used so far KG3-KG6 i placed them in that order because KG6 is the latest i tried and has proven to give me better coverage but its still really bad..
I can connect to data but only outdoors or only when the reception is full bars, if i start to lose any bars there goes my data connection and i can no longuer use any services data/sms/mms/calls i literaly cant do anything..
This is a big issue as i know for a fact that you dont need a data connection to send sms. but it seems the galaxy s2 under the current modem firmware im using KG6 wont allow me to unless im on full data coverage...
My question is this, what is the best modem firmware to use according to the frequencies that i meantioned earlier 1900/850 WCDMA i dont mind using another country's modem as long as they are oriented towards the same frequencies that i need
My phone came from Korea and i know they use 2100/900 could that be the issue? Is my hardware oriented towards that? At this point anything could help and please feel free to post thanks
SL.

Hmm, I'm a SGS2 owner on TELUS as well and haven't had any problems so far, besides the GPS Lock Time which most people seem to complain about. It takes about 1 minute for the GPS to lock for me, but my data is fine. No dropped calls or sms problems here. My download speed as I checked last was at 8.31 Mbps down and about 2 Mbps up.
But again, having horrible GPS issues. Wish I could figure that one out
Sobai can u post your results to *#1234#
so i can compare my settings to yours.
I'm using KG6 on Rogers network and don't have fantastic reception either. For most situations it holds calls -- but buildings with lots of concrete I lose the signal completely. It's as if I'm not truly on the 850 band ... my G1 had the same problem until I flashed a Bell-specific modem, that solved the problem. I guess we'll have to wait until Bell launches the G2 here, we'll be able to swipe the modem again.
i have an imported gs2 that i am using on rogers and it doesnt drop calls, but i have had times in the past when it would show 3g but not download any data. once i turned airplane mode on and off data would work fine again. the best radio for me has been the kf2 modem in terms of not having the data stalling issue. i find that even if i show no bars of strength i can still download data with no issue.
if you are on telus i would make sure so set the wireless settings to 3g only so the phone doesnt try to look for a 2g signal.
KG2 on a Bell SGS2 on Rogers/Fido network in Vancouver.
GPS locks in seconds. no dropped calls. H+ all the time, never once saw a 3G symbol. no data dropouts.
over 7Mbps down on this network with the SGS2, when i had 1/3rd the speeds an HTC Desire. great reception in my office downtown, my apartment, everywhere i've been so far.
KG2 (not the stock canadian though), in Montreal on the Virgin/Bell network. So far no complaints on the data. Since I started messing w/ the firmware however, the connection is on 3G when idle and only switches to H+ when actually in use. From what i've been reading many people have been noticing this when flashing over the stock Canadian firmware.
On the other hand however, the GPS has been having a hard time establishing a lock (whereas it used to be quite speedy and precise before I flashed). Won`t be able to test whether this is a firmware problem untill the stock Canadian is released by Samsung.

Wow guys I appreciate the feedback I thought I was the only one with this issue! I will definitely give kf2 a try right now and I'll also download the 3G only data app and give it a try and I'll get back to u guys with some feedback. Thanks again
Btw I'm using, touch x 3.2 rom that has kg5 on and I did notice a little improvement in the reception but the data connectivity is still very spotty so I'll give kf2 a try but so far kg5 modem is definitely the best one I seen so far to use on telus. Btw anyone trying to use the galaxy s2 on fido, I was never able to get 3G at all to work I was stuck on edge.

Do you know how I would be able to set it up so that it stays locked on 3G? I tried the *#301279# trick and disabling hsdpa and hsupa with revision 99 but to no avail. Even if it shows full bars and 3G I still get no data connection and also I can't send or receive texts unless there is a data connection for some reason, have you guys had this issue??

i have never needed to mess around with that menu. you should be able to go to
settings
wireless network
mobile networks
network mode
select wcdma only
that will lock it to 3 only. if you keep having issues you might get a new sim card from telus as that might be causing you some issues
Do you have your apn configured properly for your provider? If it isnt your data definitely work. Other then that I havent had these issues in edmonton on kg6 or maybe I just dont know what to expect reception wise. I do notice it hops from 3G to hspa to hspa+ a lot so i switched to only 3g. If anyone finds anything that improves that or reception though I would be interested

This information would be great because I am also experiencing spotty data connectivity (browser loads data, stalls, resumes centuries later) which results in severe crappy data speeds of 0.8mbps down and 0.07mbps up (done on in-browser speakeasy test and speedtest.net app.

I wish there was a way to extract the modem.bin file from the bell sgs2 this way we could simply distibute it around. Someone should root their phone, install cwm4 and make a backup and we could simply pass the backup around so we could all have the modem

[Q] Galaxy s ii weak wifi

hello, as the topic suggest my galaxy s 2 's WiFi is PRETTY weak.. i hv goggled and found many suffer from this problem, but i couldn't find any solution. i was hoping someone over here could guide me to some script or update to fix this..
i noticed this problem when i step out of my room bars go down to 2.. and if i go little further with galaxy s 2 then no signal, my iphone 3gs and laptop catches signal fine at distance..i have tired routers at different location's, for example my friends house, in university, so problem definitely is in galaxys2.. it may it requires some other kernel or modded stock kernal.. i dont know..
btw i was on stock ROM same problem existed there, now i am Cyanogen Mod 7.1(2.3.7) and its here too..
please let me know what more could i add that might help you guys here figure out a solution.
thanks
Well, the wifi is not the strongest ever seen but i can use it outside my house (for about 10-15 meters away) without problems
Inside the house i have full/almost full signal in every room (on every rom tbh)
So yes, it's not strong but at my eyes, looks like yours is even weak than normal
mine also has a weaker signal than my other devices. However, I ran speedtest on all of them and the galaxy s2 has the same download and upload speed as the others. This is in spite of having zero or one out of three bars. I read in another forum that the wifi signal indicator of the galaxy s2 just shows a more accurate signal strength and the others just increase the indicators to make you believe that it has a strong signal. :-D
Maybe your router wifi transmitter is weak. Also you could try a different wifi channel on your router.
Same issues here
I just got GSII from sprint and i still have my other 2 EVOs and i loose wifi signal when i go downstairs or other rooms while my EVOs get nearly full bars and speed.I never remember having any wifi issues with my EVOs.I also have the same no or weak wifi issues at work while no other phones at work have such wifi signal problem.any suggestions...?
One thing I tried which helped a little was download 'WiFi Alanlytics' from the market and select your SSID and it will advice which is the 'Best' channel strength for your router.
Ant
poor signal
Hi i have same problem with poor signal.Any solution for this !? Try connect with 5 different router same stuff....flash with many different roms and no results any ideas ?

I agree completely, but another thing you should keep in mind is which modem is the best for you, i went though and tested 20 modems and ended up with LP6 which give me good range, speed, and battery, i suggest you test different modem types
Use THIS app to check, is highly accurate
another thing worth mentioning is that i recall once reading that all kernels will not be compatible with all modem types, I use Siyah kernel, GT i9100T, and BULP6 modem
hope that helps

*Modem/Radio/Baseband is all the same thing and can be seen by going to Settings - About Phone - Baseband. It's basically a driver which receives and sends Mobile Network signals as well as handling switching between GPRS, 3G, HSDPA etc....... (but not WiFi connection, that and switchover between Mobile Network and WiFi is handled by the kernel).
Whilst you are absolutely correct in saying modem has nothing to do wifi whatsoever, why revive a two month old thread ?

Wifi terrible since upgrade to 2.3.5

Hi, my SGS 2 was bought from 3 uk and came with 2.3.3, KF3 I think, and I was able to connect to my Wifi at home from anywhere in the house, but since upgrading to 2.3.4 XWKI4 and then 2.3.5 XWKI8, I can nolonger connect to my wifi when Upstairs, It works fine anywhere downstairs.
My wife got the same phone at the same time and has left it on the same original firmware and can connect fine anywhere in the house...
I have tried CF-Root kernel and Speedmod K2-16, 18 test 1 and test 2, makes no difference, also tried KI1 and KI4 modems, still no better either way!
My Router was on channel 6, but wifi analyser showed this to be a week channel and suggested 12 or above, so changed to channel 12 and still no better?
So is the modem weekness due to kernel or modem or something else?
Any suggestions?

Modem XXKI3 or XXKI4 should work fine.
Try to delete wifi connection on your phone (when connected click it in settings menu and choose delete) and re-connect to your WLAN.
Maybe there is something cached (wrong channel in bad wifi conditions).
Just a guess.
Good luck !
Cheers, I'll give it a go, also read suggestions that a lower channel might be better so will try channel 1 as it had 12 stars in wif analyser.
I have downloaded NEKF2 (3 recomended modem) and KI3, so will test them tonight as well, but it's Not hardware as it was fine prior to upgrading so hopefully one of these will give me back my wifi upstairs.....
Update:
After I got home, I ran wifi analyser and walked around the house noting the signal in key spots.
I wiped the wifi settings and re connected, re ran my tests but this alone did not help, so I flashed KI3 modem, tested again, this did not help, so then I changed my routers channel to 1 and tested to no avail, so lastly I flashed CF-Root kernel and was finally able to get wifi back upstairs.
So I think a combination of modem, kernel and channel was the key to my issue.
Thread can be closed.
NEKI1 modem from three UK is available. NEKF2 is an older three Italy modem

[Q] Signal strenght issues in CM7

Coming from a HTC Desire, I bought a 6 month old Galaxy S II off a colleague.
I used to run CM7 on the Desire, and was happy with it. So I wanted to install it on the Galaxy as well.
Figuring out Odin and installing CWM was fairly easy, so I was set up with CM7 in no time.
The issue I have is that no matter what modem I use, I can't get a reliable cell signal out of my phone. I've tried some (10ish) different modems from this page.
All of them get 'emergency calls only' sometimes, and dBm values of -95 at best, sometimes going over -106 before dropping connection (emergency calls only).
Signal bars usually stay at 2/4.
If I have connection, I do seem to be able to max out my 3G connection (capped at 1Mbps by the operator) with some modems, but not all.
After restoring stock firmware, I get -77dBm and better, 4/4 signal bars most of the time.
Stock firmware uses XXKE7 modem.
When I tried to use that modem in CM7, I got the same bad results.
I am in Belgium on the Mobile Vikings carrier, which uses the BASE network.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

I'm not sure if you have to tinker with the phones APN settings there in Belgium. Sometimes that is the way to troubleshoot poor data connectivity.
Google "apn settings" and the name of your carrier and see what you can come up with.
Other than that I'd just suggest trying different modems. Hope that helps

It is the open source drivers CM based roms use. I see the same on every device I have run CM based roms on. The generic drivers have less radio and wifi signal strength. They don't use the built in hardware to the Max like OEM drivers do.

[Q] Signal issues

I've recently moved to Hampshire, UK and got myself a Vodafone simcard. This problem probably existed already prior moving to UK but wasn't as noticeable as phone networks were a lot better in Finland and Czech Republic where I lived before. I often notice my signal being non existent or very low when other people with Vodafone but different phones have ok to good signal. I often also notice that according to the phone it has a HSDPA connection but no data is being transmitted, but immediately if it jumps to HSDPA+, data is being transmitted flawlessly again. I'm running the latest stable CM 10 on my phone. Additionally there seems to be similar issues with WIFI, other phones show good signal but mine doesn't.
Any ideas what could be the cause? Is the reception in S3 just worse than in my old Nokia E71 or Iphone5? What really puzzles me is the not working data connection with HSDPA, sometimes moving few meters might make it jump to HSDPA+ and data again transmits normally.
First go back to full stock rom, latest uk generic firmware and modem to test.
It's more likely to be due to your rom than hardware.
I've tried few different stock roms but the same problem seems to be present, still shows that I'm connected with HSDPA but no data is being transmitted. Any other ideas?
Check APN settings correct modem and CSC .

Modem, CSC and APN were all correct. My problems are with both wifi and phone network, could the problem be physical? Doesn't kernel come with the firmware, or should I try with another kernel?
You can flash a kernel or modem separately or as part of a whole firmware.
If you've tried going back to stock then hardware is the most probable cause.
