Deep sleep q - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is deep sleep a stock state for our phones(all Android phones?) or is it a product of the custom kernels?
Ever since I installed Doomkernel v3c and created a screen off powersave profile with setcpu I'm getting stupid good battery life. A full day of moderate useage and I'm still in the 75-80% batt life and obviously a big part of that is all the time spent in deep sleep when the screen is off.

Its stock of android, also varies from phone to phone

some1 knows how Deep sleep works ? From the technical side...
the SoC totaly deactivates CPU part, and phone works on another small processor ? or still works but only clocks with 19 mhz ?

as much as i know i think the Deep sleep things totally deactivates CPU and whatever work being down will be paused and transfer to Hard drive/non volatile storage.. the only thing active at that moment is RAM. and in Deep sleep even u have noticed that it takes a fraction of second extra as compared to normal mode .... coz the processor cache is fully flushed at the time jus before Deep Sleep...
Jus answer based on xperience of what i think ..might be rite or wrong too !!

Im getting battery drainage problem on my X10 in sleep mode it drains from 100% to 75% just in seven hours im running WB 4.04S. Please help me i ve tried all of calibration methods but all of them suck.

Install CPU Spy, Reset Timer, Let phone go to Sleep mode! Look again after 5-7h. I'm sure you're phone isn't the entrie Time in Deep sleep, its only Screen off.
Maybe...

[Q] Deep Idle support in kernel

Hi,
just wondering, did someone try to find out if our CPU has DEEP IDLE mode and try to patch kernel for Mini/Mini Pro/Active/Ray with DEEP IDLE support from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297535
That would be fantastic approach to have such mode for small battery capacity of our devices.
The cpu is not the same as nexus s. And the power mainly drain from screen, cpu, wifi and so on. It's meaningless to save power on idle.

meaningless or not - this is a retorical question, I'd like to have 1-2% drain during idle at whole night instead of 1-2% during hour and probably everyone would like to have same...
As for CPU - do you have SPECs? Maybe we have analog of such mode?
If you want to lose only 1% in one night, simply activate flight mode.
When all Wireless connections are disabled and the screen is off, there is almost no battery drain

Hi,
my problem is that when I had the "Deep Idle" feature turned on, some of the apps were opening with extremely long lags (2-5sec). I turned it off my phone is much more quicker and I do not have to wait 4 seconds just to open simple call log. BUT my battery consumption is MUCH more bigger when the device is idle. Is there any possibility to improve this battery life without the deep idle feature on? OR are there any patches to apply to avoid this negatives in deep idle? I use AOSP+ 2.3 and Glados 2.7 kernel.
Thanks

JUST USE CPU SPY
NORMAL SLEEP= FAST UNLOCK, AND ALMOST EVERYTHING STILL RUNNING
DEEP SLEEP= IT'S LIKE WHEN A LAPTOP HIBERNATE'S AFTER YOU LEAVE IT FOR AWHILE
cpu spy just shows which time which freq is used, how to activite the deep sleep, my question is that
How to 'activate' deep sleep ? Turn your screen off & leave your phone alone, when it's 'idling', it should be in deep sleep the majority of the time unless you have WiFi running or something else that's using the phone's resources.
You can't activate deep sleep as such.
If you find your phone isn't in deep sleep when it should be, there might be apps causing wakelocks which stop it entering deep sleep. If you suspect that's the case, install BetterBatteryStats & allow your phone to run normally for 8-10 hrs/overnight before you have a look at the stats in BBS.
If they show you've got wakelocks stopping the phone from sleeping, read the BBS thread on here. Info in the thread might be able to help you identify these wakelocks & perhaps eliminate or reduce them. There are also people who post to that thread a lot that might be able to help you identify/eliminate these.
One thing tho, you say you've used CPU Spy, what are the figures you're getting out of CPU SPY when you leave the phone idling/doing nothing with the screen off for say, an hour ?
i am getting 71% 200Mhz deep sleep 0%, 12% 500Mhz etc, can you send me the link of bbs please?
thx

Exactly. Unless you're deaf, blind & have no limbs, use the search function :-|
lolololol thankzzzzzzzzz
INSTALL THIS
AND THEN JUST BEFORE YOU PUT IT IN YOUR POCKET CLICK THE WIDGET, YOU WILL BE IN DEEP SLEEP IN 5 MINS TOP
thx and also please write few profiles u i can use
thx
Sry never used the app before, i just read the review. But you should have your cpu as close as possible to 100-200, or 200-500 if your kernel is stock, when you want to go into deep sleep

Wifi and sleep on ICS

Hello,
I have a smartq t20 tablet (great cheap tablet!) running ICS, my question is, when I leave wifi on all the time, what happens when the tablet goes to sleep (not awake according to the battery details)?
I can leave a download running and it would continue when the screen is off, does this mean my tablet is never going into deep sleep? Or is that unrelated?
I know the wifi itself drains more battery when left on even if it isn't being utilized but I was wondering about the CPU side of it.
Thanks!

If you want to download something with the screen off go to Setings/Wifi/WiFisettings and choose the sleep policy as never. Then the screen can go off and still download... Regarding battery issue, it would be like the tab was on sleep anyway, battery usage would be minimal... maybe more than usual... but very minute nevertheless... hope it helps
No worries.

Well if you are concerned about battery and CPU usage, you have nothing to worry about. If the download is something along the lines of a movie, then you may see a small drop in battery length and internet speed. You should see barely any change in your CPU.
Thanks for the answers guys!
I knew how to do it, I was only asking about the effects.
I experimented a little with CPU spy and found out that the CPU never goes to Deep Sleep if the Wifi is active when the screen is turned off.
As a result I would expect the battery drain to be very different unless I don't understand deep sleep completely and it isn't such a big difference from the lowest CPU setting.

Battery Drain EXTREMEMLY Fast

Hey guys, I am having a problem with my Amaze, more specifically, the battery is dying absolutely WAY to quickly. For example, yesterday morning, after unplugging my fully charged phone, I dropped it straight into my pocket, and maybe looked at it twice the entire day. When I pull it it at the end of the day, the battery is red, with 8% left. If I were to be using it, the battery would last about 30 minutes on a full charge, most likely. I've also noticed that the phone is really hot, even in my pocket. If it helps, I am on ICS and have been using it since it was leaked in April, however, this problem is new (about 2 days ago is when it first started), as I usually get about 8-10 hours with moderate usage. Can you guys please help me? Thanks!
Well if it just started happening recently, and you haven't made any changes, then the battery may just be going bad... If that's the case, you can call HTC and they will send you one free replacement.

could be just the battery.. but if you don't mind me asking - how long have you owned the device? I suggest you dl JuiceDefender from the playstore and see if that helps - Definitely helps my device get through the day with moderate use and one time charge every 1 1/4 a day but this could vary on owners usage. Also, check your settings to conserve battery life such as turning off wifi, gps, auto syncs on your fb, gmail etc. and adjust your brightness to the lowest if possible and OH... less widgets and windows > less power that the battery consumes. Hope that helps!

Like I said, this just started happening. I didn't just decide to leave all my wifi and GPS and Bluetooth on all day. Also, to answer your question, I've had it since the beginning of the year. I think it's just the battery. I'll call HTC and report back.

Nope, battery life isn't that great with this phone, depending on how much you use your phone and what all you use it for you will get any where from 6-14 hrs + or - some. Also your Rom and kernel will make a difference..

Nice!... Glad to hear
This happens to me from time to time, and the phone is ALWAYS hot when this happens.
What I've come to discover that it's usually something that' activating the phone while asleep.
The phone is hot, because the processor is being used. That's why the battery is completely dead so quickly, something is pulling it out of deep sleep and causing it to run full bore. The key sign is the phone is hot.
I recommend you get an app that lets you see wakelocks, and what's keeping the phone awake etc (I use GSAM battery monitor) Whenever I notice my phone becoming hot for no apparent reason, I know for a FACT that my battery will be dead in a matter of hours. Lately it has been "Android System" that's the culprit, and I can't quite nail down what is doing it, but it's very random and not much of a problem because I do a reboot and things are back to normal.
First, try to reboot your phone. Get system tuner and see what processes are using the processor when the phone is hot (make sure you show ALL processes, even the default excluded ones). Check the wakelocks. Get battery monitor and check the mA usage (it keeps a running history). When my phone is running optimally, I have a mA drain of around 70-90mA when screen off/deep sleep, and it should maintain this type of drain... when my phone is becoming hot for no reason, I see numbers anywhere from 300-600mA drain for no apparent reason. A lot of the time there was an APP that was offending, so I would first check that. Like I said though lately it has been "Android System" and it's kind of hard to nail that down, but it's so random.
When my phone is cool to the touch most of the time, I know it's running optimally because it's achieving deep sleep. I've found a lot of it has to do with what you had running before you turn the screen off. A reboot ALWAYS fixes it for me. If you can't seem to nail down the offending app, do a full reset back to stock and you should notice that your phone runs very very cool when the screen is off and it's sleeping. I usually get anywhere from 24hrs-2 days of moderate use with the screen off governor set to conservative, and maximum clock for screen off ~600mHZ. I use interactive governor for screen on, but that's for responsiveness and you'll probably have better luck with ondemand for battery life. YOu can set these in System Tuner.
Just remember, if the phone is HOT, it's using energy. If it's hot, something, somewhere, is causing the processor to run at a high clock frequency. If the phone is HOT after being in your pocket/screen off for a good amount of time, something is definitely wrong/rogue app. The phone should never be hot returning from deep sleep. I bet if you check your default battery monitor (The android one) you'll notice that the bar for AWAKE is probably almost solid blue, something is preventing it from going into deep sleep. If I notice my phone is hot when I take it out of my pocket, I immediately know that something isn't right. This should NOT happen.

what program do you use to measure battery drain? I use Battery Monitor Widget, but it's not giving me an accurate answer (lets say I had the phone on idle w/o data/sync... the available % is stable over 5 hours (~1% loss per hour), but the current usage says at least -100mAh)
for me, the idle battery drain (apps autosyncing/using data) is the problem
I see my device properly going to sleep (deep sleep is the majority of the usage, not too many wakelocks/processes.....)
with data off and sync off, idle battery usage goes to a minimum

I use battery monitor widget to measure drain.. as far as accuracy, I'm not sure? I don't know if it's EXACT but it seems to be a pretty good indicator of drain. When in deep sleep the phone usually measures anywhere from 70~mA-120mA. Usually it stays below 100. Before I changed the screen off governor / max freq (screen off) it was almost always 100+. Screen off governor is conservative with a max freq of ~600MHz.
I have no idea how exact it is, but when it's reporting ~300mA, my battery is definitely draining much faster.. and when it's reporting 500-900mA~ my battery is draining incredibly fast, so it at least seems to be a solid indicator of current usage.

On my previous phone (LG Optimus T / Optimus One/ P509, CM9 ICS ROM), Battery Monitor Widget reports more accurate readings (idle with data off= -2mA or -20mA<dont remember>, accurately representing that 1% of battery would last at least 2 hours)
Phone with the new kernel (KozmiK Ruby -0.5a) still goes battery drain crazy (even with Juice Defender installed now).... I hit 10%, then got fed up, turned off data... then the phone slowly sipped battery for the next 3 hours going down only 1%.... sigh
I think Facebook Messenger is the data hogger in my case, since I do use it often... will try a new ROM build without logging onto facebook messenger, see how it goes

What you said is true, at least for data on - autosync on. My battery last around 10 hours idle + 3.5 - 4 hours on screen usage. It seems that autosync eats a lot of battery. Will try to turn that monster off and see how much it will improve. I have bad habit to push refresh button on gmail/facebook widget, even with autosync on,
I used to get 14-16 hours. Now my battery won't last more than 6 hours. I gotta replace my Anker

Most recently I got 1 day and five hours with a fair amount of use by using faux 011 kernel and using CPU editor script to set it to battery saving profile. I'm at 45% right now with fairly heavy use after over 18 hours.
Battery life is totally under your control, it takes some work to get it where you want it.. but you also have the option of buying a bigger anker battery with external charger for $20 and carrying that spare battery, and simply not giving a damn.
Just saying, battery doesn't have to matter for a very small price and a little space to carry the spare battery in your pocket.

Help with CM10 cpu deep sleep problem

Hi guys, I have a problem with cm10 based rom (PA2.53), cpu doesn't go into deep sleep when it is supposed to. It does go in deep sleep, but for very short lenghts of time, during the night (with quiet time enabled and jd plus) i lost more than 10%/hr (from 100 to 20 in little more than 6 hours idle), I checked cpu spy and of 6 hours idle little more than 1 was in deep sleep and 5 at minimun clock freq (134), there's no app keeping the phone up as battery was drained for 70% by android os (which also shows cpu awake for more than 5hrs).
Any suggestion to fix this? I know battery drain is "supposed" to be high on jb, but isn't over 10%/hr in idle a little too much?
Using mesa 2.3, smartassV2, min 134 max 1200, jd plus, startup manager and fast dormany tweaks in init.d...any suggestions to fix this problem?

I tried a last resort solution and it seems to be working (not too stable but better than before) I completely discharged the phone, recharged it fully while shut down and battery consumption seems to have improved. I lost 6% right away when unplugged it from charger within 30minutes, but now i have 12.30h running on battery and it's down to 84%, so aside form the 6% that drained immediately from 100 to 94 the rest seems to be keeping up pretty well. I'll keep an eye on it though as it seems to vary from time to time...In two days new pa and new fxp should be out, I'll see if that makes anything better...
Thanks for reading and for the replies so far
I think i found out what is causing the high battery drainage, it's the mobile data connection. For some reason JD (or the system) can't shut it down when phone is at sleep. Last night i switched mobile data off and in the morning i had almost less than 0.5% drainage, as soon as i turned it back on battery percentage started dropping at sight...
Battery Calibration
Download BatteryCallibration app from the market and follow the steps given there..
Helps me everytime i have a battery issue...
HIT THANKS IF THIS HELPED
Thanks for suggestion but that doesn't help, i used zepps die hard calibrator before, but it's not a battery problem. Random processes at random times will keep the cpu running when it's supposed to sleep, that's what's draining the battery..
Perhaps an app is polling the net too often, facebook anyone?
Xperia mini (smultron), CM10 150, Xtended kernel + rom
No i have app control which prevents any unwanted things to start-up automatically (and fb is on the no-fly list )
I think i kinda sorted it out, what causes the problem is thethering. When i disconnect tethering according to phone wifi and data are off, but in truth they keep staying on. I shut tether off and can still see my hotspot from pc even if wifi is completely off on the phone! So it's wifi and data which keep staying awake (even with screen of for long periods of time) and slowly drains the juices.
