I'm going out of my mind, and really could use some help. I am trying to get a ROM on my wife's Vibrant (I did everything necessary to mine), but when using CWM I am getting the following for some reason:
can't open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip
It's rooted, I have Titanium Update on there, Root Explorer, ROM Manager...everything, but this is holding me up. I just don't get it. Also, for some reason, I can't seem to get Busybox to load. Not sure why. It went on to my Vibrant without any problem.
Anyone who might have some advice....I'll take it!

That is how I did my Vibrant, for the most part. I will try it again on her phone..... Maybe I missed something.
Got the update.zip file on there, but no luck. It just keeps looping back to the blue Samsung Recovery Utility (with "reinstall packages)....getting frustrated.

that happened to me a while back. Make sure you copied the update.zip on the internal sd card not external and (how i did it) make sure you replace the update.zip (if there is one) that is already there... if that makes sense.
I give up, at least for now. I had next to no problems with my Vibrant. Now her phone is showing as rooted in Root Check, yet Titanium Backup says it can't run cause it's not rooted. I just don't get it.
Back up everything. Odin to stock and push update.zip from the guide above. Make sure it is the one 1.7MB one. It's also posted in the second post here....

Umm, are you on stock 2.2 by chance? That would explain the busybox issues.

well, depending on how you rooted it, no it didn't actually have busybox.
The stock 2.2 update from tmobile doesn't have enough room on it to have all the stock apps/bloatware on /system + root app + root binary + busybox installed. While it may have "appeared" to have been installed and working, it really wasnt and was cleared once rebooted.
Also, you need to replace the stock 3e recovery with the modified one to get the update.zip working.
But an easier way to do it is to ODIN a voodoo kernel that has CWM integrated into the kernel.
Also, make sure you never rename a rom to update.zip. always leave it as it's name and flash it that way.
Thanks everyone. It took some work, but about 99%. What a pain in the ass this turned out to be. I don't remember it being anywhere near the work for my phone.
Its because of all the new updates and different methods.

So i rooted my phone and installed clockwork rom manager and downloaded nero v3_voodoo.zip and put it on my phone..boot into recovery mode and now i get

Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
and it stays like this for hours.
Thank You
Which rom/ version are you coming from? Can you boot up normally, not in recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
you rebooted into ClockWorkMod Recovery, right?
@Fearless yes.
@jrod from stock and yes i can boot up phone and it works normally it just doesn't flash the new rom
Weird
I want to say that I had this problem @ one point. I think I downloaded a new copy of the ROM. Sometimes the download get corrupted at one point or another. Have you hit boards.teamwhiskey.com? or head to the IRC chat channel? they have a GREAT support community.
I really hope you ran a titanium backup, or else you will loose all apps. I really suggest springing for the paid version, because the restore is only one click.
ok...try re-downloading the ROM again and see if that works
@led Thank You!
@fearless
Downloaded update.zip to root phone did that blah installed clockwork mod app granted superuser always, clicked flash clockwork did that, copied nerov3 onto sd card opened clockwork selected reboot into clockwork recovery once in recovery i selected the zip i wanted to update to which was nerov3voodo.zip clicked yes and it finds and opens it fine just soon as it hits installing it gets hung up for a long time hours so i just pull out the battery and boot back up to normal android with root
Im not 100% positive if this is required or not but when I flash a rom I always start from stock rom, then use samsung mini kies to update to Ji6, then flash the rom of ur choice. I did nero v3 that way too.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I did the same as jrod after a soft brick recently....
mac
is there kies mini for osx?
Ur gonna have to research a lil cuz it wasn't easy to find, at least for me it wasn't lol and im not sure if there is kies for osx. Again im not sure if this routine will fix ur problem I just know it never fails for me. The one time I did flash straight from stock rom, it was a different rom (not nero) and it worked but it seemed real buggy. I say this cuz I flashed the same rom twice, once from stock JFD and once from JI6. Coming from JI6 seemed much smoother

Wait a minute, the way I'm reading this Nerov3 was on the SD card and not the root of the phone?
If that's the case both update.zip and nerov3.zip have to be on the 16g root memory of the phone, not the SD card.

Haha aite. Ima fill u in. But it might be a difficult to follow, lol:
1) I began by installing the custom ROM "[ROM] Vibrant AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO". I had done the back-ups with Clockwork Mod and whatnot. And I also installed the BusyBox.
2) So I successfully installed the custom ROM. However, I read that there was an issue with SD Card's not working??? So I found the .zip file that fixes it and I put it on my SD Card. I then launch into Clockwork Mod, but it freezes on the Vibrant screen. It just boot loops. So I guessed I bricked it.
3) I try numerous times to ODIN it back to stock. It somewhat worked. However, after the Galaxy S screen, it just turns black and nothing loads. Like the interface doesn't show up.
4) I then restore it to a previous state through Recovery. But now, the SD card issue is still present. Like, I can't update/download any apps.
5) I find NERO v3 and I put it on my SD Card. I boot into recovery, and try to install it through there.
6) As I try to install it I get that,
"E: Failure at line 12:
copy_dir PACKAGE:data DATA:
Installation aborted." message.
IF ANYONE CAN PLEASE HELP ME, IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!! Lol.
Hi guys so i planned to upgrade my samsung galaxy to custom rom 2.2. i will appreciate if someone can please tell me that which is the best and stable custom rom for Tmobile Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant (US) Version. i heard that Nero v3 with voodoo lagfix is the best so far. Ok ur right that was alot to follow lol. Ur gonna have to start all over and odin back to stock. Make sure you have both the right ....512.pit file that goes next to the PIT selection in odin , obviously. And the ....jfd.tar file that goes in the pda selection. Check the repartition box also. Depends what ur looking for. The newest and reputable ones are nero v3 and axura 2.2.5.7. Nero is a lil more stable but not by much. Axura is a lil more snappier/faster but also not by much. Both are themed specifically to the makers choice so its ur call which to go with. Without customizing anything I like neros theme better but after I flashed blackfroyo to axura I loved it. Also it seems that nero is more customizable but that could be cuz axura just came out a few days ago. So its ur call. Try em both out. I did. Give one a couple days then the other so you can really wee the positives and negatives. DONT forget to disable voodoo if you try multiple roms

Im coming from 2.3.2 - XWJV1 [Gingerbread on Vibrant], after ODIN, and when i wanted to flash the latest Bionix i got an error
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E: Failure at line 16:
symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM.bin/su
Installation Aborted.
every time i get this, i have to do another ODIN because it just does a loop in the android system recovery and will not get out, so i had to ODIN 3 times.
now when i try to flash a ROM it just keeps replacing stock recovery with clockwork mod recovery, i do the usual steps to install a ROM and it just does a loop. i tried different clockwork flash versions and either it wont let me install the older ones or the only 2 versions that work have loop problems.
HOW DO I FIX THIS, IM SO STRESSED OUT, THIS IS UNNECESSARY!
after doing install rom from sd option, i was able to get out of the loop but i got
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E: Failure at line 16:
symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM.bin/su
Installation Aborted.
i still cant flash anything and i already tried eugenes files.
got into clockwork but when i put install files from sd card > choose from sd then it when i choose update.zip it just goes back to the android system recovery.
then i put reinstall files from the android system recovery and it just sends me back to clockwork recovery...

Ok I just went through this less than a month ago with my captivate. I have a twenty page topic on this EXACT issue. I had all the major devs pming me and doing everything under the sun for probably a total of thirty hours. Result - NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS. This issue is not specific to our phones, there have been cases of this on almost every android phone. Your gonna get people telling you to do all this elementary trouble shooting...the problem is far too deep dont waste your time. You can flash back to stock with every tar and pit file this side of samsung...not gonna work. SOMETHING is not getting wiped. Save yourself the time and sell the phone to someone who will not use custom roms.
Also no rm/wipe command through abd is gonna help either! Sorry just telling you from someone who experienced this hell. Also every thread in existence on the internet on this subject has died out without an answer. If you read for enough hours you will find out the hard way! Good luck my friend!

Are you able to re install the original rom? I and many others with this issue had that unique problem of being able to install ONLY the rom that was running before everything went to hell. There lies the key I believe to all of this. What makes only one work.

If you are not willing to accept the risk then you shouldn't be flashing roms at all. If this is the route you want to take (I highly recommend it as well), I would check out this thread or even this thread (although it is on Android Central, so you will need to make an account to see all the links if you don't already have one). They are pretty similar (the latter is a bit overboard on detail, but that can be a good thing if you are new to the process) and should at least get you started on learning what it is you need to learn to ultimately wind up at ComRom 2.1. I hope this helps!

Evil Fascination and Community Rom are two different roms and both will root your phone when flashed... this is how mine's set up for ComRom and it works flawlessly:
1) download odin, samsung mobile phone drivers, debloated/debinged/deodexed EB01 all in one package, CWR3-Voodoo, and ComRom 2.0 package of your choice and the 2.1 patch... place ComRom and its patch onto your sd card
2) use odin to install EB01
3) boot up phone once to let it format itself
4) power off phone and use odin to then install CWR3-Voodoo
5) boot straight into CWR, wipe data/cache/dalvik 3 times each and assuming you don't want to backup/restore data (I usually just use Titanium Backup app from the market) proceed to install .zip of ComRom 2.0
6) select reboot phone and let it boot up, it may take a while the first time
7) congrats, you're rooted and running ComRom 2.0
8) to install the patch simply hold the power button down until the menu pops up, select recovery
9) this will boot you into CWR again, no data/cache wipe necessary simply install .zip ComRom 2.1 patch then reboot phone again
10) congrats now you're rooted, voodoo'd, and running the latest ComRom
hope this helps, that's about as simple and short as I can make it

this should give you a current recovery (CWM), I use the first one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046905
most everything else can be found in landsharks thread here: odin, the samsung drivers, debloated/deodexed EB01 and ED01, and how to install all of that (props to landshark68 for putting it all together)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048380

superchunkwii put up a pretty nice detailed thread on how to get to ComRom if you're at stock (or need to go to stock, then go to ComRom):

last but not least voodoo, these are the closest threads I could find that describe it (second one is a little better):

i know it might seem like information overload and a lot of reading, thats why i tried to simplify it in my instructions in my previous posts... if you download what you need from those threads then follow the steps I listed you shouldn't have any problems. If you do, don't worry we're here to help

yeah if you're rooted and running the baseband you want (ED01 or whatever) the boot into CWR and flash the rom you want... you're going to need to do a data/cache/dalvik wipe before flashing the initial ComRom 2.0 package so make any backups you want.. once its done installing reboot phone to make sure everything works right, then boot back into recovery and flash the patch (no wiping or anything needed) any questions or problems be sure to post them

Then I change my mind. Is there a way to uninstall clockworkmod? I would like my Vibrant to go back to stock. I did not get a chance to root the device. I was going to root it next but then I changed my mind.
Any help for my vibrant phone is greatly appreciated.
If memory serves me correctly you'll be fine if you didn't root the phone. You should only be able to put CWM when the phone has been rooted.
If you need, you can always odin back to stock just in case!

Good news. I never rooted my phone. I skipped that step. I did not know I had to root first. I was trying to do it afterwards. It was so complicated that I gave up.
So, is there a way to put my phone back to stock? I would kove to Odin back to stock. Is there a how to?

If you never rooted your phone than you already have stock. You don't have to do anything.

well, the problem is that every time I reboot the phone I see a boot splash that is not supposed to be there.
It says: Overstock and then underneath it says: smaller, lighter, faster. That is the screen that I would like to remove.
Any help on that?

Dude this is awesome. I also found a video that would guide me through the back to stock. The same way u described. it looked really simple. But it does not want to flash back. When i am in doing and choose the same.pit file and the tar. I hit the start button nothing happens. :-( It just hangs in there. Am i doing something wrong?

Just like the title says why should we not use rom-manager on this phone?
from what i can remember it installs a ****ty version of CWM that doesn't cooperate well with our phones.

gotcha. i wish koush would do something about rom manager because the atrix also had a wipping issues on roms and he never fixed it
From my recent experience with the SGSII, the recovery is integrated into the kernel (unlike HTC devices which have a dedicated partition for it). My guess is ROM Manager can't flash it, since it doesn't have the kernel image.

You shouldn't use it on any phone anyway, your best bet is going into recovery

Haha too funny I was literally wondering this last night. Glad you asked kuz I couldn't find an answer when I did a quick search.
Edit: so I've been running miui this week and see the app rom manager. I'm fine as long as i don't actually do anything through it correct?

It breaks and does weird crap - I've heard it works OK if (and only if) you are currently on CM7.
But since you're most likely using it to move to/from another ROM... Just three-finger into recovery or if the ROM has an extended power menu use that for recovery.
Its best to just use three-finger or the extend menu power menu like Entropy said. I've seen Rom manager mess up leading to a semi-brick phone.
Hey all,
First time poster and new to rooting.
I ended up attempting to use rom manager to load CWM right after root, but I think that borked my wifi.
What can I do if I've already used it? I did it because I hadn't yet seen all the xda threads on NOT using it, and the place I was was not as well informed as you folks.
Also, how do I get CWM if not via ROM Manager?
My brothers EVO was royally effed up from using ROM Manager. Became a paperweight until Sprint authorized a replacement.

Read through the FAQs and this thread - CWM is included in kernels that support it.

I ended up figuring most of this out so I wanted to close this out (for anyone that stumbles past my original post).
Here's what I did:
I uninstalled ROM Manager - but this didn't get the wifi going.
I reflashed with the stock ROM and unrooted kernel - this still didn't help.
I did a factory reset - this did manage to get it going.
I was able to track down a CWM standalone that I flashed it with (using Odin).
I followed that up with a root, a wipe, and then a fresh flash of UnNamed.
Phone seems to be working fine.

When I first rooted my phone I installed rom manager because it looked easier to just pick the file that u wanted flashed and it would do it for u, so u wouldn't have to play with the volume keys. But every time I tried to do anything with it, it just said certificate not found. Aborting. So u shouldn't use rom manager. I think it works with the roms that u download of the app but not ones from XDA.

If you're on CM7, ROM Manager can be used to install gapps - that's about the only thing it doesn't seem to choke on.

You cannot get CWM via ROM Manager - that is the point. It comes with certain custom kernels such as Entropy's DD kernel. If you do not have a CWM kernel - you will more than likly need to use Odin to get a kernel with CWM.
If you have totally screwed things up - look in the dev thread for "the return to stock" section and start over doing it the right way

Hi first post as well XDA forums so in depth and helpful decided I wanted to be apart of it. Still a noob though ill work my way up.
I am trying acheive the same goal he is, that is to say Instal the UnNamed (it is exactly what I want) Rom on my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket.
Keep it brief: Rooted my phone using root exploit:
it will not let me post link. the zergrush one
and bellow flashed clockwork mode using stand alone not ROM because of this forum. Model 5.0.2.6
I wipe catch, battery, then format everything. Then I start to flash the ROM. The installation begins. It cleans and formats everything again, then sais that there was an error in the file and it fails. After this if I dont restore my phone will not start. Ive tried it several times being even more thorough on procedure and its the exact same error every time.
Im just wondering if its the way I rooted it is incorrect, The CWM Im using is not the correct one, or if Im doing something wrong entirely. I think it might be CWM but I have not been able to locate one like he did that worked.
Any help, suggestions, criticism or advice would be very helpful. I just thought Id ask. thanks in advance ^^

UnNamed is not a Skyrocket ROM nor are any other ROMs in this subforum. You want to go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1399
