[Q] Stock recovery?? - Motorola Photon 4G

well, does anyone know how to fix this...i put the bootstrap recovery on my photon thinking i would use it at some point...and it turns out i don't, and well, i wanna get rid of it, because now i can't charge my phone when it's turned off, it either will boot into the recovery or just hang at the moto symbol screen and i have to pull the battery to get it to work again

In the recovery app you use to boot to recovery there is a charge mode clicking that will get you what you want or you can rsd back to stock ....next time ask in general tho

Check this and see if its what you are looking for. It will take you back to the current OTA update and not rooted, but rooting is the easy part.

just an fyi... all i did to go back to stock form is go into your settings menu under privacy and select the "data factory reset"... worked fine for me and got rid of root... checked with the root check from the app market... no need to go through all those extra steps... hope this helps...

Not sure what you did but I performed 2 full factory resets via settings and one via fastboot and still had root. Also, quote from Motorola: "A factory reset will not remove root, or restore apps that are uninstalled."
Maybe you did something else to remove root? Anyways, after all the factory resets I could still do backups, run bootstrap recovery, flash, and run all root apps.
From what I know one has to either flash the OTA/update.zip or take the official update to remove root. Or, if dock method is used can just remove some files and reboot I think.

I'm kind of curious as to why a simple method to returning back to stock recovery is not mentioned here. It would be nice to have this if possible. Flashing back to stock ROM seems to be the only real option I take it?

You need a computer. Either you didn't install recovery right. Or you're too impatient. Sometimes it hangs for a minute or so.

use terminal emulator and reflash your recovery with flash_image. you got a bad flash or a bad download of the recovery it sounds like.
there is a slim chance you aren't rooted correctly too, in which case it won't let you flash the recovery until you get permanent root. hopefully this isn't the case.
Pretty dumb question what's flash image n just incase how do I check. For a permanent root?

My advice is not to do ANYTHING until you are at a computer and have at least a half an hour available. This sounds like your first time flashing a ROM, take some time to look up key terms and such, your patience will reward you greatly. It is difficult to flash without a computer. Go to a friends house, a library, something and do it from there. To check if you have root, download the app root checker from the market. Then, after confirming root status, work from there and flash a new recovery by pushing it through ADB. Then, place the ROM on the sd card and flash it through your recovery, then Google Apps. If you follow everything I say, and it still doesn't work, come back to this thread or send me a PM and we will go from there. Look into guides before posting, not trying to be mean, but they are there for a reason.

[Q] Need Help! sgs2 stuck

Hello i have an sgs2 from At&t and i was trying to root but was unsuccesful and now i have this message on my screen when i turn it on " Frimware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I could use any advice or help. I have search and tried alot of things but no luck. Please thanks.
What method did u use to root?

And importantly did you attempt the recovery through kies?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
i used the "how to easily root your sgs2" method using odin. I tried to use the recovery through kies but it asks for a code and it wont connect to my phone.
It sounds like your phone is still half functioning. Try booting into recovery,
With the phone off hold down both volume keys and power button until you see the first screen, then let go of the power button.
If it's stock recovery you'll be able to do a factory restore(wipe). If CWM choose wipe data factory reset.
After rebooting it might work.
Worst case you can put it back in download mode and try odin again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
If you can't get it into download mode you may have serious issues.
Might need to build a usb jig or buy one.
Contemplate a return.
If you tried everything, and I mean everything to get it into download mode, i.e. jig, "adb reboot", then neither can they. Can't see anything you did.

You never did tell us what KIES has to do with ROOTING ?
I would definitely flash back to stock. Stock will never further mess it up. Not to mention there is the stock rom that's prerooted. By using that one you won't get a yellow triangle on boot. Nor will the counter go up from changing the kernel.

If he downloaded an international rom then he can't use the stock recovery as the power button on the international roms aren't the select key. They have an actual hardware button to select. I found that out the hard way.

At least you got download mode working. With that working there should be no issue about fixing your phone.
Just keep in mind depending on if "everything flashed from the international version you possibly will also need to flash the right modem.
I wouldn't worry about that until you got the phone up and working.
It's best to keep each step as simple as possible, especially for the first time you're trying it.

ok so i downloaded the stock rooted rom and im using odin 1.85 but it stops at factoryfs.img, any ideas??? thanks again for all the help
Not good. I wish I could offer more help. At least it didn't stop at flashing the bootloaders.
There's not too much you can do at this point. You can try waiting seeing if it changes.
You can hope if you do unplug it that you can get it back into download mode. Then try odin again. Though I'd make sure the checksum of the download matches up to make sure it downloaded properly.
No one wants to be the one to say unplug it in the middle of an odin procedure, but if no progress is being made after a reasonable amount of time, there's not much left to do.

[Q] help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now (past boot)

(sorry to the other thread owner as I didn't realize I was in the i9300 forum when I posted my reply asking for similar help)
*** this is a repost from the post I made on androidcentral, with a suggestion made by dmmarck over there ***
Ok, yes it seems I made a mistake and I'm new to this, so apologies. But I tried going in and changing build.prop (specifically ro.camera.sound.forced=0 to get the camera to go quiet when the phone was set to silent) and when I rewrote the file into the system, I ended up with a phone that won't go past the 'Samsung Galaxy SIII' screen into the Sprint boot. I searched around and found that my SBF might be trashed, but at this point I'm unsure as to how to get it reloaded properly.
I am able to get into the recovery (up volume, home button, power button), and may have made a further mistake by formatting the /system. Unfortunately, I didn't make a backup using that utility until AFTER the build.prop problem, so even though I tried to recover using the recovery I made (after the problem), it is understandably not working.
Am I totally screwed or is there a way to get me back? Any help is greatly appreciated.
// dmmarck and paul627g over on androidcentral think if I can get a good samaritan to help me by posting a nandroid backup of their stock L710 setup, I should be able to recover without issues, would anyone here be able to help me?

hey now, I appreciate what it takes to get to a fix, but I am in a bit of a pickle with this being my only phone and I am new to Android, so what may be a fix is still an exciting bit of news.
I appreciate that this is not the same as an OEM ROM now (with help from here and from android central), so I'm learning. I also understand that this is a problem that I caused by not doing my basic backups as I would any other software work, so please don't misunderstand and think that I am not understanding of what the timeline realistically will be to get to a fix.

I have a solution for you. Ask someone who has a GS3 to make a nandroid, copy it to your sd card and flash it. Viola you should have everything back to normal.

Some might deny your request because certain personal information being stored in a nandroid such as gmail accounts, contacts, passwords, ect.

thanks! actually, I have no way to factory reset unfortunately...
By going into stock recovery mode you can factory reset it. It's the same steps to get into CWM.
And if all else fail, root your phone using the odin method by getting into download mode, you'll have CWM recovery and you can factory reset using that.

hmm, I think I'm missing something because I don't have the factory recovery now that CWM is installed (or am I incorrect here?). And I'm not sure if I can get back to the factory reset options now in the state that I'm in.
As far as the odin method, I am already rooted, I'm not sure how I can use CWM recovery to factory reset at that point..
Apologies again as I am new to android and trying to learn! I appreciate you're help!
Yes, you don't have stock recovery because you're rooted. And if you're able to get into CWM you should be able to get your phone back to normal.
In CWM there's a option to wipe data(factory reset), but wiping data to cure your problem is experimental meaning idk what might happen when/if you do.

How about unrooting ?
Using this method

then going to stock recovery.

After flashing nocturnal Rom and installing apps i experienced a slight overheating and i turned off my phone. I turned it back on and I was unable to access the Rom, recovery, or boot loader. I flashed stock with LGPNST and i re-rooted and unlocked the bootloader. I had the same problem upon rebooting. SO...I can flash through LGPNST stock and root but every time i try the boot loader unlock and reboot my phone has the original problems . I've tried the process a few times with the same results.please help.

It may be helpful to someone else, if you were to explain how you fixed it.
Yes, it would indeed be quite helpful if you could elaborate... because this just happened to me and I'm stumped...
I followed the same exact procedure I've used other times without error...
Except that now, after LGNPST, then root, then freegee... go to restart the phone and it hangs... won't boot up. What gives?
I repeated the process and did a factory reset after LGNPST back to stock, since I noticed (oddly enough) that all my apps were still there after LGNPST (full, to 100%)...
Still no luck...
EDIT-- Can't for the life of me figure this effing thing out. LGNPSTed I don't know how many times... with factory reset, without... I've tried fully relocking and unrooting the device... both through the FreeGee app *and* manually through adb... no error mssgs, double-checked... everything followed to the letter. There's only one constant each time: Once I've re-unlocked the bootloader (either with the app or through adb)... the phone is basically softbricked... once I turn the power off, it is A) not possible to boot into the stock rom, B) not possible to access fastboot menu, and C) not possible to boot into recovery. The only thing it *is* possible to do is get into download mode... and from there I'd just have to LGNPST again, but what's the point, because once I've done that and tried to unlock again, I already know what's coming. Never been this frustrated with a phone before, any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT 2-- No luck. LGNPSTed to stock once more, and factory reset, because yet again, all my apps were still intact... idk. Anyways, decided to do some hunting around with adb, and "adb reboot recovery" produced an error screen... the android lying on his back with case open... am I to assume this means there is a problem with my recovery partition that could be causing my difficulties... or would one expect to see this screen when trying to access recovery on the stock phone?

Honestly I don't know how it was resolved. I lgpnsted and rooted and unlocked the bootloader like 5 times.I got into recovery a few times but then got the same problem two more times. The last time I got into recovery I managed to flash a custom kernel and everything was fine from then on. I just don't understand how this problem is caused or even how it is truly fixed.

There have been a small number of phones that will not unlock with standard freegee. They can be unlocked but it is riskier, you would need to talk to Shelnutt in irc.

Our phones successfully unlocked with freegee originally but some error caused us to lose access to the bootloader and corrupt whatever ROM we were on and then cause errors where we could use free gee but run into problems. Just for the sake of documentation, I made a little log of my most recent attempt at getting back into the fastboot menu... obviously it's convoluted, but hey... sometimes experimentation gets results. This time, however, it did not... still no luck.
LGNPST back to stock
factory reset from settings->backups
run root exploit
restore original backups from first time freegeeing via adb using carrett's method
reboot
full unroot from SU app
factory reset
LGNPST to stock
re-run root exploit
reboot
re-unlock with freegee script (adb)
disconnect cable
reboot
(right here is the failure. after running "power off and reboot" from the power button menu, phone shuts off. it tries to start up, then i get a quick flash of the LG logo, straight to a backlit black screen that hangs indefinitely. only thing possible from here is to enter download mode.)
Back to the drawing board...
Same here

restore original backups from first time freegeeing via adb using carrett's method
reboot
full unroot from SU app
factory reset
LGNPST to stock
re-run root exploit
reboot
re-unlock with freegee script (adb)
disconnect cable
reboot
(right here is the failure. after running "power off and reboot" from the power button menu, phone shuts off. it tries to start up, then i get a quick flash of the LG logo, straight to a backlit black screen that hangs indefinitely. only thing possible from here is to enter download mode.)

Just for documentation and in case I can help solving this, I am having the same problem, I explain my case with more detail on the FreeGree Thread, but pretty much I am on the same ship as you, I have tried after LGNPST, with and without factory reset, with the Google Play application and with the desktop application, but same result, black screen after restart.
I have a brand new phone, picked it less than a week ago, could LG have changed something? bootloader/recovery partition sizes? something?
I am still within the 14 days period and as much as I like the phone, if I can't bootloader unlock, means I will be stuck on stock ROM, and that is something I don't want... might as well go and change it for a different phone, or sell it and get a nexus 4...
I get same.thing. black screen after freegee. Its two days old. So now what!?

How does this happen from a random stock ROM. I think I was using nocturnals ROM and how was the problem resolved through multiple flashes?

Root on latest OTA?

Hoping to root my girlfriends Note since battery life and performance have been crap since Jelly Bean OTA update. Do the root methods listed here work for the latest OTA? May seem like a dumb question but I would hate to brick her phone since I have no experience with it and root threads seem to get harder and harder to find as phones age. Thanks in advance.
Solved. Answer I was looking for is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314464
Check out the stickies in the general section. There is a lot of great information there and it will get you headed in the right direction. I've also read in several places that doing a factory reset can help as well.

Thanks, I have been reading through some stuff and finding some good info. I'm used to HTC devices so this is a bit different for me.
A custom recovery and superuser should get you rooted. If you flash the new TRWP recovery it will ask you if you would like to root. That is what I suggest. Use odin to install the latest twrp recovery and then boot into recovery. Not 100% sure but I'm 99% sure than when you boot into it and go to reboot it will ask you if you'd like to install superuser. Then you say yes (or swipe to install) and it will install it. You then reboot and superusuer will pop up automatically and give you two options. I choose the twrp method. Click that and it takes care of the rest. Just make sure you have a good chaege so your battery doesn't die mid flash.
Here's the link to twrp page for our device.http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/96
Use PDA slot in odin. Get into download mode by pressing and holding power and volume down then let off power after it vibrates keep holding volume down.

Excellent! Sounds easy enough! Thanks!
How will root increase battery life? And you don't need root access to flash a rom. But it's easiest to flash a custom rom if you have installed a custom recovery.
I think poor battery life is due to two things here and isn't the stock rom. 1. The new operationg system may be fun to play with resulting in longer screen usage. 2. Your battery is getting old. They are very cheap on ebay. I got two 2700 ma batteries and a charger for about $20.

Root access will allow you to freeze, and remove apps killing your battery. Like Google now. Google now is the BIGGEST battery hog I know of. Some apps you can remove, but some you can't remove without root. You might like using some, so you freeze the battery hogs until you need them.
I agree you should freeze the suck at&t apps, so you should root.
But Google Now isn't a stock app so anyone can delete it along with a lot of the carrier apps using the app manager.
The point still is you don't need root permission to flash a custom rom (the theme of this thread). Just recovery.
Or just odin the debloated rom.

Sorry I guess I didn't understand that he was wanting a custom rom

Its all good, buddy. I think he actually wanted both a custom rom and root access. He was getting advice about rooting like it was a separate process, but now, thanks to the clever lads at TWRP you get root by flashing their custom recovery. Also, when you flash any customized rom the developer has already taken the step to cook in root access.
