Bypass service provider restrictions? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My service providers are jerks. They put all sorts of filters on my internet connection. The only browser that works properly on my X10 is Dolphin Mini. Downloading apps from the market for the most part is extremely difficult. I was just wondering if there was a way to change the DNS, or use a proxy to bypass all this.
PS, the ISP in question is MTN Nigeria (7.2 Mbps HSDPA).
I tried using my friend's etisalat Nigeria SIM, and everything worked like a charm. And that was on EDGE.
Thanks.

If you are using the net to download apps. I suggest you download apps through wi-fi. Or when you need to surf the web.
3G etc, is for small uses.

Well if it's your service provider who blocks, you can't do anything on your phone.

Opera browser issue

Hi Guys,
I need some help. I loaded the BB connect in my Fuze and started using it. Plus I had checked out another sim, mean for a BB. Now I had my Opera perfectly working with MSN or Yahoo taking me to the normal standard site without issues till date.
But based on this changes on the new sim (2nd sim inserted to test in the Fuze) due to the data connection it has the MSN was rendered by Opera was mobile version. I am not sure if this is he issue or the BB browser config is making this issue.
Now my Opera is rendering MSN mobile, Yahoo mobile but doesn't go to standard at all. I have a ATT PDA unlimted data plan and BB enterprise connect. Something went wrong, not sure if this can be in the phone or something idiotic at ATT proxy end. Other sites are seemingly ok, I checked twitter and google. Issue is the behavior is not totally dofferent for MSN. I cannot even see the videos etc now. Cleared Cache, cookies, history, disabled BB broswer settings, I mean anything I can think of.
THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY.
Any idea on how to help on this. I would like to know if this is Opera or ATT or MSN screwup. My hunch is OPERA picking up the link or the ATT proxy somehow storing some setting thats not recognizing my unlimited plan.
Seemingly iwth a HSDPA connection the download and the push email seems to be slow too. Even Opera is slow.
PLEASE PROVIDE INSIGHTS GURUS.
Thanks
The only thing I can think of, and it's simple, probably something you've checked, but the option "Mobile View" under Display in the settings would cause that.

[Q] rooted+unlocked vibrant wont connect to data

I Just rooted my phone using Super One Click rooter and unlocked it using SGS Unlock Pro app from the market. I'm trying to unlock it on Roger's network (i think its the same as AT&T)
Thing is i cannot connect to the internet/data on the phone, it says to check connection settings but i dont know what i need to change. Phone calls and texting works just not data.
Any help would be great, i am pretty new at this stuff and have spent the past 3 days trying to figure this all out
You need to change the proxy setting to those of your network service provide. Just call the customer care and ask them for the detailed info about that, they'll probably send you a sms carrying the settings for you to install based on your device.
If that doesn't work (I had that issue) just manually enter the settings after you ask the agent about them or better yet check them out on the internet. Usually service providers post them on their official sites under GPRS, EDGE or 3G.
Weird i just changed my APN to internet.com and it works

[Q] What exactly does having the correct APN's do?

I was trying to input the correct AT&T APN's in my X10 and so I looked on my wifes phone (hers is identical to mine) and I found that she didn't have any APNS listed either!
My question is; what purpose do APN's serve and how can we be going along perfectly without them?
On official AT&T Firmware I believe that it is automatic. You have an APN, or you wouldn't be able to access data. Sort of like your Internet Provider at your home.
So have apns but just can't see them?
I noticed that after I input them, I started getting the "H" and the up/down arrows...this wasn't there before when it was blank...it was just a little antenna icon...
they are like login name and passwords to different Providers servers.

Then how could my phone be working fine without these in my list?

The little antenna icon is bluetooth. You do understand that the APN is needed for data and Internet, not for Wifi, sms, phone calls, camera, etc.
You have an "H" now because the APN settings you input. You are now on the HSPA (3.5G) network and can use your data plan. You could also see an "E" for Edge or 2G, or 3G for 3G network. If you don't have one of those symbols, then you probably can't access the internet, not including when using Wifi.
Just to be clear: I'm referring to the:
settings> wireless>mobile networks>access point names.
There was nothing in their before...and I typed some things in that I found on the forum for ATT...
How could my phone work fine if there is nothing in this list?
Also....like I said; after I put in the ATT information...all of a sudden I got an "H" with the upload/download arrow indicators where previously there was none except a "signal" looking icon next to the wireless bars.

Well...this partially solved my problem of barnacle not working.
Now when I fire barnacle up it says it's running and beaconing an ad-hoc network....the only bummer is my laptop or my transformer don't see it.

Use wifi at home or at Hotspots. Wifi is usually faster and it's free. Use H data when on the road, but it costs money for data. Especially if you don't have an unlimited data plan.
Btw, you shouldn't have to manually enter the APN Settings. Just follow path settings / Sony Ericsson / Auto search for internet settings.

Are you rooted?
Wow...everything working now...I had somehow gotten ahold of a stock wpa_supplicant file....I replaced it with the "ad-hoc-friendly" one from the transformer thread and now I can connect.
My APNS are happy, I'm happy, barnacle is happy....thanks very much for the help.

[Q] Using straight talk Browser issues.

My phone;
Xperia Play r800at (att branded)
Unlocked, Rooted, Apn's according to straighttalksim.com
Simcard from an e71
I can use many apps to access my data connection, like Critical Strike(CSPort) and the Android Market App, However when I try to use my simple Browser I get "webpage unavailable". So I thought it was because it was the e71 card. But;
--
Girlfriends phone;
Xperia Mini Pro sk17a (unlocked)
Non-Root, Same apns from straighttalksim.com
Simcard purchased from straighttalksim.com
Her phone also doesnt work with the android phone browser, but still can use the data connection for things like the android store.
--
Now then, I tried using the other apn settings from howard forums, but all that did was take away my ability to send MMS, still couldnt access the browser on my phone. Anyone else having the same issues?
EDIT: Solved this; just dont use the Proxy from straighttalksim.com, can now download from the market, send MMS, everything works. Hope this helps people.

[Q] Chrome doens't load webpages but Opera does

Hello guys
I'm on a travel (Spain right now) and I bought an Orange SIM to use internet here but I'm having some trouble...
Webpages are not loading on Chrome and on the built-in browser, but I can load them on Opera Mobile
I'm getting this error: "unable to connect to proxy server"
It's hapenning only when using mobile data, if I connect to a wifi network every browser works well
I've searched on google but all I can get is about Google Chrome for Desktops...
Any help on this?
CM9 RC2 here
Thanks
You need the correct APN for orange.
Settings, more.., mobile networks, access point names.

Thanks for answering!
But APN settings seems to be ok and since I can open any webpage on Opera, I don't think this is the problem.
Edit:
Also, some apps like facebook, foursquare and gmail doesn't get network connection, while whatsapp works fine :S
Edit2:
Solved
I had two APN configured, one was working and the other wasn't, so I deleted the broke one and now every app uses the right one
