Youtube multi tasking? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, is it possible at all to multi task while running youtube in the background? i.e. for music

That would be awesome! I hope it is possible...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

This has already been asked by a number of people before, and AFAIK there is no way to do it. Obviously the reason is because YouTube is for playing videos, so it makes sense for it to stop when it's in the background. If you want the freedom of searching for music and being able to play it in the background then try something like TinyShark...
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.exigo.tiny
There's plenty of alternatives on the Market, but I'd personally recommend this one.
I don't think you're going to get a solution to your specific issue, so I give that suggestion as an alternative.

[Q] youtube: problem with multitasking

seriously, and i mean it.. did you guys have trouble multitasking with youtube?
When you buffer anything inside youtube, and you switch to ANY other app for example browser or calendar or whatever, all the buffer you have done, will gone back to zero !! Wtf!
How stupid this is?? And i wonder why nobody has ever noticed this and complained about it somewhere over the net.
Yes, I have even basic problem with youtube. When I switch to another app, why does the video stop playing? Sometimes, I am only interested in the audio!

Hi, I'm having same prob and I don't think we can do anything to it ;/

No, the video can continue to play but in the background. For example, on a PC, if I have youtube video playing in a browser tab, and I switch to another browser tab - the video continues to play back. So, I can at least listen to audio (which is useful for music videos).
Thanks,
Osho
I have this problem and it annoys me, as I have very slow internet,so last thing I need is for it to restart again.

Yea, i know that if in pc, you switch to another tab, youtube would still continue buffering. But this did not happen in tab's youtube. If I buffer any video, and then i switched to browser, then switch back again to youtube, all the buffers would have gone to zero.
Are you 100% sure you dont have this problem with your stock youtube app?

Are you talking about p1000 or the new gt with honeycomb?
Don't be fooled into thinking that Android's multitasking is that much more robust than iOS. When you move away from an app, the system sleeps the VM that it is running in to devote clock cycles and memory to your current working application. The only way an app can continue to persist alive in the background is to specifically request to remain alive and working on something with background processes. The YouTube app doesn't do this, so when you move away from it the application sleeps.
The only advantage Android has over iOS in terms of multitasking is the easy ability for an app to run background processes if it so chooses. Fortunately no sane app developer is going to write an app that tries to stay completely active in a non-windowing OS.

Okay, i know it make sense to not write an app that tries to stay completely active in background. But wouldnt it make sense for an app such as youtube that needs a lot of buffer (since not all country in the world have fast mobile connection), to be partially active in background, such as the buffering ability?
I think that make sense! And i still wonder why wouldnt honeycomb developer realize this .

I would also like Youtube to be able to play in the background, just like on a PC. Why not? It can't be too hard to programme either.
Swedish national radio, Sveriges Radio, has a good app that allows you to listen to all their programmes and the app runs smoothly in the background while I surf or do other stuff on the tablet. You'll find it at Google Play (former Market) if you're interested.
An other thing that Youtube on Android does not do is to run playlists. Again, why not?
I can't really see the point in removing great features when you develop a new OS. The goal can't really be to make it worse compared to the PC, can it?

If your mostly worried about the playlist feature, it works when running stock browser and you are signed in. All you have to do is tap on the bottom-right corner of the video's preveiw image, afterr tapping, the little '+' shows up

A solution would be using OverSkreen (Browser) and just open youtube in a small window.

[survey] Your favourite apps?

Well, a kind of a survey, anyway. I'd like to know what are your favourite apps in any category! I'll collect the stuff you write and put it in the 1st post, to make it easy for new users (like me) to find out what the greatest apps are! Please, when you mention an app, do mention the reasons you like it, too, and maybe even a link to it (keep it legal)!
Okay, so, I'll suggest some categories to begin with.
What is the audio/music player of your choice? The stock one can't be the best one, it doesn't even have an equalizer.
What is the video player of your choice? I've noticed that the stock one is quite lousy, as it barely plays the videos recorded on phone without lag. I'd like to watch TV shows on my MB526 (since I commute every day, so I hate wasting 45mins on the bus doing nothing) and I'd like that to be a joyful activity.
What is the navigation app of your choice? NDrive? iGo? Standard Google Maps? Which one has the best maps for your area and which one gives your location most precisely?
What is the most interesting app you've come across? Candle? Lighter? There's gotta be something more interesting than this?
What is the app you use most frequently on your defy(+)?
Can you think of any more categories? And apps that fall into them? Post, post, post!
*When I say stock I mean my MotoBlur Android 2.3.4. system (I am intending to load something else soon...)*

Well I do use the stock one (blurmusic from atrix) and I don't feel the need of using another one. I has nice interface, acceptable widget and lockscreen controls.. It has some equalizer (media audio effects), and it can be used with some 3d party equalizer app like "Equalizer" app
Using the stock one or MoboPlayer. Didn't notice any problem with MoboPlayer so don't need to search for another one, but I heard that the Mobo Video Player is a good one.
I don't use much navigation, but when I need some guide I use google, but it's navigation is a little bit buggy when it comes to calculate the route.
Hmm, don't know, when I first hear about Widgetlocker it was wery interesting for long time, same was with MiLocker..transparent screen is interesting app..no use to me but it's interesting, it's cool
Hmm.. Zumocast, Viber, Music Player, TuneIn radio, Tapatalk...there are much more..oh yes zedge

On my firmware, stock music player = CMP (Connected Music Player). It's not really bad, but it can be a lot better. Which ROM does have the BlurMusic player from Atrix?
Thanks for the reply, neighbor
Cheers!
I use PlayerPro for music, BSplayer for video, sygic for navigation (also precache on brut maps - even better)
Most interesting app is GTA3 ofc.
I most use : Timetable, BW, Golauncher, Palmary Weather Pro, Dolphin HD and Root Explorer.

How playable is GTA3 now? I kinda don't want to play it without music (radio), cause that's what's the GTA series was all about for me... Driving around and listening to the radio stations My favourite is Vice City, it had the best stations! Enough of the off topic now
Can you tell me why do you prefer Dolphin HD over other browsers? I am gonna test it anyway, but wanted to know your opinion.
Sygic does look nice... Can you tell me more about Brut Maps, too? I've never heard of that before, but I see that it's some kind of a mod of Google Maps?
Best video players :
1st is Vital player, 2nd mvideo player
Best music player :
Google music player is awesome..
Best launcher :
Go launcher (go sms, go contacts), and ofcourse SPB may be the best.
Best weather widget :
Beweather pro
Best dictionary :
Colordict

Brut maps is mod for Google Maps that enables navigation in rest of the world (it was just for USA until brut came out)
Gta3 is playable only if you use Gta settings launcher and low everything. (also on xda like brut maps)
Vice city map could probably be available for gta 3 cause gta 3 for android is the same version as PC version.
I prefer Dolphin and Opera cause they have some addons to turn on flash content if you're on 3g...also they have many excellent addons.
All of that is available on this forum
music player: TTpod
Video player: Mx Video Player
Navigation: just Google Maps
most interesting app: I just love Dropbox
TTpod seems interesting, I've checked it out on the market! Will test it one of the next days..!
Okay, I've done some testing already and would like to share my opinion. It's about launchers.
SPB Shell 3D - I don't like it. It's quite boring and not practical. It's slower than others, too. Yeah, the 3D switching of home screens is very nice but there's nothing more to this launcher.
GoLauncher EX - This one's great! I love how everything can be configured and set up the way one prefers! A lot of effects makes it VERY interesting. What I really hate about is that it comes with 3 or 4 more apps! I HATE that! I don't want GO Shop or any GO Widget... Is there a clean install of this launcher awailable?
ADW Launcher EX - I think it's the fastest one, or at least it seems so on my stock 2.3.4 (defy+)! It's simple and effective, that's why I like. The problem is I couldnt find settings/options!! Can this one be configured at all?

I did so, but the thought that they are there and that they are occupying my phone's resources for no good reason bothers me a lot! That's why I deleted GoLauncher and am now back to stock (BlurHome?) Will test more of them, though!

FREE: Improve youtube lag/stutter/buffering with TubeMate

this is just a suggestion for anyone that is having the same issues as me, which is simply constant lag/buffering issues with the stock youtube app. running on what i felt was a fast enough internet connection, i would constantly have buffering issues both on HD and non-HD (a lot more consistently with HD).
after looking for weeks, i found an app called TubeMate (http://goo.gl/mzrZT)
it is currently only available via the amazon app store. it seems to have a few other features besides viewing the videos (like downloading, downloading as mp3, etc..) but all i really care for is being able to stream a video in HD quality w/out looking embarrassed.
hopefully this will help some of you that are also experiencing this issue. if you aren't, well i'm really happy for you.
Since its a free app, upload the apk.
didn't realize DLing from the amazon appstore would be a big deal. but here you go.

for the guys involved in this thread so far, are you also experiencing buffering issues with your prime and if so, let us know if TubeMate helps out. i've certainly seen a HUGE improvement with all youtube videos to a point where i only stream HD now.
The app works great and also allows you to download video or save it as an .mp3
I have used this app for years on all my devices and on my prime since I purchased it. Wouldn't use anything else great app

i have installed latest tube mate app but can not download any video. it gives an error.
screen shot is attached.
please help
I use it to download videos, not stream. The UI is rather ugly ;P
Can someone clarify: Is this app a REPLACEMENT app that uses youtube (what I think it is)? Or is it an app that somehow optimizes the native youtube app (what I hope it is)?

it's another app that does not optimize the youtube app.
while i love it and still use it, i must put my disclaimer that the issue with the laggy youtube ended up being the Wifi/BT issue. beyond that, it still speeds up buffering better than the stock app.

I haven't had any real problems with streaming vids, but I might check it out regardless. Faster buffering is always nice.

Okay, just wanted to thank you for pointing out the app. It's great, love it. I' ve hit the thanks button.
the ui is ugly in this app but it works amazingly faster than stock app. plus it lets you download the videos or you can download them as mp3 to listen in music player. works great. I love the look of stock YouTube app but sick of the buffering on some vids. I have high speed wireless so no reason it should be buffering like that. this app eliminates that basically.
whenever i click to watch a video in tube mate it pops up asking me which player to use - youtube or tubemate- i choose tubemate but then the video doesnt load...anyone else had this problem>?
should be called buffer be gone!!
Gotta say +1000000 for this app, I use Crackle to watch some movies, took away all the buffering, youtube too no more buffering..... excellent app!!!

few questions I'm unable to find clear answers on.

First off i want to say thanks for the help everyone. I'm on cm9 and solved most issues myself but I few I'm having problems with. First the native music played force closes when I try and search for a song. Its no big deal since I could just use gmusic. Jw if others have this problem? The next is what app does everyone use to have a video cam iv seen lots of different posts on it so I'm just trying to get a clear answer on that. Last is has anyone gotten svoice to work on cm9? Mine force closes all the time. I was wondering if it was maybe the download (got the apk from the op) or if there is a mortified version on it for cm9 and the photon? Thanks once again folks

1) Apollo is brand new and still in beta. Could very well be a problem with the app and not necessarily the rom
2) videocam illusion, download from market.
3) svoice?

Its not apallo its still just music. I'm on 6.1 but have had this problem since v1.
Thanks
And S-voice its one of the best apps for talking to your phone. Its from the sgs3 iv seen it run on lots of phones
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Not sure why the music player force closes. It would do that to me if i tried to skip songs too fast. I can say i have no issues with Apollo though, very smooth and the widget has a previous song button. Video camera illusion is the best camera at this point in time with no drivers. Every now and then it will lag but just restart the app and the problem goes away. And i have been unsuccessful at making svoice work. I tried installing the apk, using the flashable zip, mixing in with my gapps when i updated, and even changed my build.prop to match the SGSIII but still no luck.
Reflash.

Apollo is pretty spartan for a music player. If you enjoy music a better player might serve you better. I recommend PlayerPro, but it's $4.99. For a free music player, the MIUI player is not bad (works on any ROM... I think it worked on stock Gingerblur too).
I don't use video. Apparently Video Illusion is the only one. I haven't cared enough to try it.
S-Voice isn't compatible with our phones. Those straight rips don't always work. Have you tried Dragon Go, Speak to It, or Vlingo? They are all rated highly and work well with our phone. None of them are very good, and even Siri isn't that good in real-world applications, from what I've heard. Voice commands have a hell of a long way to go. They worked flawlessly in Star Trek, but there's a reason we're not using them on desktop computers. The technology is just not reliable. So you cannot expect miracles out of an ARM processor running Java, or whatever iOS runs exactly. It's simply unreasonable.

[Q] Supertube auto-suggest

Hi everybody,
I would like to ask you if there is any way to turn on auto-suggestions when I search for a video in the Supertube app.
This app is great and I find it much better than e.g Viral. However, without auto-suggestions is almost impossible to find youtube videos.
Also, I would like to ask you if you could suggest any other apps to watch youtube videos in the background. So far I have tried Supertube, Viral and Pvstar+ but I find Supertube the most stable one by far...
Thanks a lot!
