[Q] How to Remove Superuser.apk from App Drawer? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA-
Does anyone know how to remove the Superuser icon from the app drawer?
I'm preparing a Vibrant for warranty exchange & have returned it to stock 2.2 KB5.
I deleted Superuser.apk from apps, busybox from xbin, & su from bin & unrooted the phone.
I then formatted sd & and performed factory reset.
Nevertheless, the Superuser icon remains in my app drawer. I am not rooted.
I have of course rerooted & tried other things like emulator commands to no avail.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated but please do not offer suggestions that require a USB connection. The phone's USB port does not work. Hence the warranty exchange.
Thanks & Happy Friday!

can you freeze it?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.anttek.am&hl=en
can you hide it from your launcher?

Dunno Callip.
I've tried a few other apps that freeze & uninstall but not that one.
Will give it a try when I get back home.
No idea how to hide apps in stock launcher but I'll look into that too.
And hit thanks of course!

I'm at a loss... formatting both internal/external and an ODIN to wipe should have knocked anything off that phone and been like it shipped.
Really confused by the post... (more so the cause of the problem).
And if you froze it, well... it can't be in the app drawer. Something is just wrong, lol.

Tell me about it.
Left that phone at home (rockin the replacement) but I'll update later.
Worked on it earlier for hours. Formatted both cards. It just won't go away!

You need to flash an unrooted ROM. They will find it even if hidden. You need to Odin a stock unrooted ROM. Best bet is to get the Samsung USB dongle because it resets the flashing counter. Yes, you're phone keeps track of how many times it was flashed.

I always Odin (have exchanged these phones multiple times) Odin is the trick then format internal SD

I appreciate the feedback guys ...
but as the OP indicates I cannot use any approaches that require a USB connection.

From my guide:
Using terminal emulator or adb
su
rm -r /system/app/Superuser.apk
rm -r /system/xbin/busybox
rm -r /system/bin/su
reboot

maybe your stock odin pit and tar files arent exactly stock as they have superuser packed in there. Try to download a fresh copy of the stock pit and tar might help.

Yes. Can freeze & hide.
However if I delete AntTek to return Superuser returns.
Everyone else: I cannot Odin! Broken USB. I know you're just trying to help but sheesh!
Does restoring the nandroid for 2.1 erase root?
Anyone know?

Have tried those commands repeatedly already. Tried again.
Strangely emulator cannot find Superuser.apk

Got it working Callip.
Were a few issues but one was rather obvious:
When I factory reset I was reinstalling Superuser (built into the system).
Doh!
Thx again for advice.

go back to 2.1

[Q] Adrynalyn V.2 No RM or SU

I updated to Andrynalyn's V2 ROM yesterday, I was hoping it would solve the issue of SU crashing. it did not. Now SU is Force Closing, and I can't use Titanium Backup to restore or ROM manager to restore to previous versions. ROM M just hangs. I have root, S-off, but can't get SU permissions for apps. Any suggestions on how to flash back to previous ROMS or at this point stock root would be fine thanks. Also, any body else having trouble with tethering? probably related to lack of SU permissions.
Thanks.

What rom are you running? Did you apply rmk's su patch?
@jmiller
I am running Adrynlyne's first debloated ROM, i'm not sure what it's called. I rooted fairly quickly and flashed the ROM and then haven't updated to anything newer, just wanted better battery life and to lose crapware.
I just saw the rmk's su patch today, I downloaded the .zip and tried to install via Rom Manager, but ROM keeps force closing and not loading due to Superuser not working properly, I think. essentially I can't get the phone to install the .zip from ROM manager. I'm a n00b, and thought about using adb to push the .zip and load it that way, but I'm not sure of the commands I need.
Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Miui 1.9.2.3- No Root!

Ok, I had been running miui v1.9.3.0 but it had too many glitches and bugs, so I downgraded to v1.9.2.3 and soon realized that titanium backup no longer works, due to no root access. I've gone into superuser and turned on the superuser permissions, i've tried reflashing, rebooting, using Odin and going back to stock and reflashing... everything! But whenever I use titanium backup, "no root access"! What happened?! Please, someone help...

remove everything and anything that relates to superuser. use rootexplorer or something and search it, and then remove everything, and then odin.
Then root using superoneclick or something like that.
That may do the trick.
maybe you had like a bad binary or something? idk
Can you tell me the directories to look for?

Grrrr... I still can't find any SU related files and folders and I have a question. Shouldn't using Odin to go back to stock fix this issue? I've repeatedly flashed back to stock in hopes of resolving this issue but none of my attempts worked...

ADDITIONAL INFO: Also, the reason for this issue could be because I tried to update superuser with an app in the market and another bit of info is that although Titanium Backup and some other root apps don't work, SetCPU and a few other root apps do work. So I'm in a vey confusing situation.

Oh...
Uhm, a question, the stock odin files that you have, are they TOTAL stock? like no root? or is it one of the rooted ones?
Can you go back into the market, go into superuser, and try to uninstall it? or go into settings>applications> and then go into superuser and it should say like undo update or something? Maybe those can fix?
Has titanium backup been allowed superuser before? Has SetCPU been allowed superuser before? If it has been done before, that may be why some work and some don't.
Yes, they should be totally stock. I downloaded them from "s15274n". And also, I'm not sure if you're familiar with MIUI but it has its own version of superuser that comes with it that's different from the one downloaded from the market... So this is a very confusing problem... Also, Titanium did work before and I never had issues until I tried updating the SU bianary and busybox. It seems as if odin isn't cleaning up everything, but I'm not sure... I made a big mistake thinking that the market SU app could update MIUI's SU bianary and now I can't seem to truly start from scratch...
This is a feature, I assume, as MIUI will soon be preinstalled on phones (MI-One). All you need to do is go into the Super User app after flashing MIUI, hit menu -> settings (I think) and check to enable root.
No ODIN, no reflash, just that. It's not just the Vibrant, and I think it's the new norm for MIUI.
That's the thing though, I've already turned on superuser in it's settings. I'm not sure what to do...

Then that's just weird. Try reverting a few weeks? I understand the last 2-3 weeks has been pretty bad.
uninstall Titanium Backup and Reinstall Via Market. Titanium can bug out when you restore it via backup or when you try using it after a OS update
also verify your Superuser App (the one thats preinstalled in Miui) Has both "Manage Permissions, and Root Permissions" Enabled

he prob. Forgot to enable root permissions.
Actually, I did have root permissions enabled. But when I restored titanium and other root apps with miui's built in backup/restore utility I guess it just made them glitchy. Uninstalling and reinstalling all the apps that need root solved the problem. Thanks "boystuff"!

System and user apps accidentally frozen

READ AT THE END OF THIS POST FOR THE SOLUTION
I accidentally used Titanium Backup's widget to frost all system and user apps, leaving mi phone in a infinite boot animation loop. I dont have aNandroid Backup and I would really love to solve this issue without flashing.
I found at Titanium Backup's troubleshooting webpage that I could use this command with adb to solve my issue:
Code:
Type the following command (replace with /dbdata/system/packages.xml if you have a Samsung phone):
busybox sed -n 's/<package name="\([^"]\+\)".*enabled="false".*/\1/p' /data/system/packages.xml | while read PKG; do pm enable "$PKG"; done
but it just says: No such file or directory (yes, I changed /data to /dbdata as stated in the webpage)
Any idea on how to solve this issue?
Thank you!
**EDIT:
This is the way I managed to get my phone working again without having to flash or wipe:
1. Boot in recovery mode and used adb pull command to extract "packages.xml" and "packages-more-backup.xml" from /data/system/
2. Open both files with Wordpad and replaced all protection="2" or "3" lines to protection="1".
3. Also, and very important, replaced all enabled="false" lines to enabled="true"
4. Boot in recovery again and used adb to delete old "packages.xml" and "packages-more-backup.xml" files and push the new ones.
5. Reboot and Voila!
6. Boot once again in recovery mode and fix permissions to avoid any problem.
Hope that this could be usefull to someone else having this horrible problem.
Thank you all!
Checked for that file on my phone, it doesn't exist in /dbdata/system/, but it does in /data/system/
It's probably fixable from the command line with Linux but that is over my head, one option would be to Odin or heimdel back to stock, and start from scratch. You might need a jig to get into dlmode.

I wonder what would happen if you removed the app (its apk) via adb from /data/app. Would it retain the freeze settings? Something to consider trying.

I got a little too punchy with titanium on my 3 year old original Galaxy tab 7 and froze a samsung system app. Got irreversibly stuck is soft brickland - Tried various methods before giving up and hitting the wipe and reset to factory restore in the system recovery mode. Everything was backed up except recent photos, so it was more annoying than the end of the world.
Odd thing was when it reset to factory, it appeared to do just that, yet when I plugged it into PC and mounted it - the memory was full and all my files and app data files were there - untouched. The apps themselves have gone except one - Superuser is still there, Does Superuser somehow override being reset? and act as a guardian of your data in the event of reset?
Odd. I was expecting to run some file recovery software to a salvage what i could, but viola - it was all there.

ZIP for unfreezing apps
For those, who accidentally frozen important system app: here quick solution without factory reset, reflashing and ADB
It automatically edits files as described in first post.
You should have unlocked bootloader. If no, ZIP useless because unlocking wipes all data.
Download both ZIP's and just flash them via custom recovery (TWRP / CWM)
If first throws error try second and vice versa. 2nd with mark "New" contains newer updater-binary that must be compatible with recent TWRP.
Then all apps will be unfrozen, so phone will boot.
Fix compatible with all Android versions.
Note: also you can somehow (ADB or filemanager in TWRP) delete file /data/system/0/package-restrictions.xml
More correct to edit that file which ZIP actually do, but deleting not harmful too.

Same Problem
Does anyone have an updated version of that zip? I also froze an app linked to the device and it won't boot, even after factory resetting it. Tried running the zip on my t-mobile GS4 (probably newer than that zip) from the SD card in recovery mode, however it didn't unfreeze it.
Any help greatly appreciated!

1. To flash that ZIP you need have custom recovery (CWM or TWRP), not stock.
No update needed, it still works in this case.
2. That strange. Maybe you not really performed reset?
Double check all and try again.

ZIP – it's not app.
Again, you need to install custom recovery.
Here link to TWRP and how install it via Odin on PC.
You need place that ZIP on sdcard.
Enter in recovery (don't know how on your model), select Install > find ZIP > confirm > reboot,

Downloaded TWRP with Odin and ran custom recovery without a change after the zip (this must have been a deeper-rooted problem in the OS itself), however in the meantime I formatted the system partition, removing the operating system. Installed Kies and ran the update. It reinstalled the OS and I'm good now. Most stuff was backed up anyways. Thanks guys for your time :good::good:
Which apk is the culprit?
Man, I wish I'd found this thread before restoring my phones internal ROM. Had it rooted and set up in every way I like except removing bloatware.
Using TB, I froze a system apk that shut down my System UI and sent the phone bootlooping. What I'm trying to determine is WHICH apk(s) I froze that caused this. I thought I had researched each one that didn't seem obvious, but I musta missed one or one of the 'obvious' ones wasn't so obvious.

There is anything that i can do to recovery or see what is doing this? I can access the phone via adb shell... i doesn't want to flash my cellphone again and configure everything... and yes, i have titanium backup but i was waiting my feel to flash JB again to make a backup... :cyclops:

If you have made adjustments to build.prop or init.d scripts i would suggest to remove the ones you're not sure they work ok...
I didn't changed nothing, i was just using it as a normal user does! Maybe is a divine call to me flash JB again... but i'll wait to debug this error and trace what app or service is breaking me.
Have you fully wiped between your flashes?
From android 4.1 for example to 4.0.4..?
Yes, i did a full wipe when i rolled back to 4.0.4...
If you're running 4.0.4 can you upload your build.prop or init.d? I'm using samsung stock rom, not a custom one.
Thanks for your enforces to help!
Yes mate,gimme 2 minutes...
I'm on LH3 but it should do just fine...
By the way remember to wipe cache and dalvik after you push the files and also delete the init.d folder and delete your build.prop!
There you go!
I'm using these setting for 2 weeks now they seem stable and quite fast...
Do let me know if this worked or not!
Hi,
Thanks for your help, i tried to put your build.prop and didn't resolved, BUT, i managed to see something...
My SuperUser (su) was broken... i tried to execute "su" into adb shell and frozen my shell, so i did remount my system and copy my su again to /system/bin/su.
Time to take a full backup with Titanium!
Thanks for your help!
Edit:
What's the correct permission to su? 0755? I did it and i still without superuser now... i need it to use titanium but for now, freeze was gone!

Problems on TW after trying CM11

Ok, so here it is: tried CM11 and decided it was a little too buggy for me. Went into recovery and did a factory reset a couple times and also SYSTEM, CACHE, and DALVIK. From there i restored my Odex Blue backup w/o incident.
However, i noticed that Swiftkey suddenly said it couldnt d/l the language pack. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Nothing. Google searched the problem and read numerous posts. Cant figure it out.
I then wanted to test another app that needs to download data. My weather/clock app has the same problem. Wont d/l any new skins. My alternate app market same issue... D/L will start but will never get past 0%.
This is clearly relates to resoring TW after flashing CM11. There must be a step i missed or something.
What would happen if i went into TWRP and chose to FORMAT DATA (clears internal data) and then attempted to restore my Odexed blue backup? I have the feeling that we are bot supposed to wipe internal data but i have no idea how to sort out this problem

It's the symlinks that point to your internal storage that b need to be restored. You can use ADB command lines to reconnect those, or take a more drastic measure that will get you to where you want.
I'll paste the options of which I'm aware momentarily...
--------Begin guidance from @freeza, posted over the weekend in his stock rooted MJ4 thread---------
" please try these commands in adb or terminal emulator... make a backup of your internal storage just to be safe.
chown -R media_rw:media_rw /data/media/
find /data/media/ -type d -exec chmod 775 {} ';'
find /data/media/ -type f -exec chmod 664 {} ';'
PS: I'd run these in recovery... "
--------End comments from freeza------
--------Begin alternative method, provided to me by a forum member uncomfortable with ADB and reporting it working-----
"What I did was just wipe everything and started from scratch and everything seems to be normal again..."
---------End comments if not using ADB----
My guess is the latter method was a wipe of everything from within TWRP.
I hope this helps.
Good luck.

See above. You can do it without ADB and still be up-and-running, though it's a bit more work on the backend.
If going the command line route, you'd have your phone in recovery, be running the latest version of Android SDK and Eclipse, and running from the subdirectory of where the Android SDK is installed labeled "platform tools." You'll need to run them from a command prompt within Windows, and be at that directory from within the command window.

I'm sorry bro, I haven't done either, though I suspect it's one of the wipe options from within TWRP. If you copy a TWRP backup to your external storage, you will likely be able to put it back after the wipe. Nothing is ever gone if you reset the pointers to your storage.
Let me try to get you some assistance; I believe @Goddly can provide guidance.
OK, here's your update (not from Goddly), you should restore nothing from a prior backup from a previous TouchWiz rom if you have gone from CM11 to TW4.3. I believe it's square one for ya (either Odin or Mobile Odin tar file flash). Just advice from two whom would know.
Or...if you did flash the Skunk Ape1 rom, reinstalled TWRP and re-rooted, you should be able to flash a new TouchWiz rom and could try to restore a prior backup. I don't see why that wouldn't work. I still think starting over is your best call.
Edit: Here are the steps that make the most sense to me if you don't use ADB and are having issues with a TW 4.3 ROM after flashing an AOSP 4.4.2 build:
1. Flash Full Stock (no root or recovery) ROM of MJ4, tar file flashed from Mobile Odin or Odin (tar can be found here)
2. Inject root using Chainfire method using tar.md5 file here,
3. Install TWRP 2.6.3.7, tar.md5 file here, IMG file here,
4. Flash your heart out

Man, you are thorough! Thanks so much for your time once again! I used skunks file in traditional Odin. When that was done I did a Factory Reset. Then I went back to Odin to flash TWRP recovery. Finally, I restored my good ole SS Odexed. Definitely not worth the hassle IMO. You really can't beat a stock based rom IMO.

I had the same problem so what I did was transfer all my important files to my sdcard since I'm rocking a 64 GB card then I wiped everything but my sdcard and finally reinstalled TW.
