[Q] - Unlocked MT4G; No service with AT&T sim - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I know we all hate the tools that post something in the wrong place or something that has been covered in several other threads, but I have exhausted all searches and can't post in the Dev threads...sorry
Here is the issue (assuming you're still there)...
MT4G has been rooted and unlocked with gfree (did my research about gfree issues) because I'm looking to be able to pop the AT&T sim in and rock some crappy service on my awesome phone. Tmob is good in the city, but not so good (zero service) elsewhere.
I'm in the city now working on this and there are no issues with the sim cards themselves, and I have brought the MT4G back to stock several times now only to re-root and try again. I'm leaving the froyo rom for the time being because gfree won't do ginger.
I'll do my best to provide any info requested, but I need another thought on why the phone isn't picking up AT&T svc. NOTE: APN will not save with AT&T card in, but won't be there if I save with Tmob sim and swap.
Open to suggestions, and again sorry if this is ill placed or someone knows there is an answer out there that I couldn't find.
Semper-

sorry, bumping because my post is on page 3........anyone?

Problem solved.....
AT&T has created new smaller chip SIM cards which will NOT work in a non AT&T phone. I did some digging online and found some of the older SIM cards with the full size chip on Amazon. Low and behold the unlock via gfree truely unlocks the MT4G unlike some threads had stated that it wouldn't.
The AT&T SIM MUST BE ACTIVATED ON AN AT&T PHONE! When I called to transfer to the new "old" SIM they asked for the IMEI of the AT&T phone and then called to make sure it was in the phone. Once done with customer service I put the AT&T card in the MT4G and it asked me to choose my carrier since the SIM had changed.
Hope this helps anyone who is trying to use AT&T on the MT4G.

[Q] Is it possible to remove network lock without an unlock code?

I have reviewed similar threads for a few days but have not found any answers. The simple question I have is in the title:
Can you unlock the ATT Atrix without an unlock code.
However the situation is a bit more complicated and ill explain.
I have been traveling the past few months and was in Costa Rica for a month. I decided to purchase a local SIM so I could use my phone without paying ridiculous ATT roaming charges. I inserted the SIM and it was locked, unaware of the network lock I inserted my personal code thinking that may be it. No luck and returned to my old ATT SIM. At this point it still worked but a few days passed and I tried again, still no avail so I contacted ATT. It just so happened the 6 month mark was coming up from the original purchase date of my phone so they would provide the unlock code in 4 days time. I waited and finally received, after inserting the code it did not work and I contacted ATT back to assure they provided the proper code as they had to send me a replacement phone a few months prior due to my original Atrix crapping out. They checked it out and determined it was correct but it never worked. I finally inserted my original ATT SIM back into the phone and it also requested network unlock code. Now I am back in the states and even with the original ATT SIM it still requests for the network unlock code. I tried unlocking and flashing with CM7 beta and STILL requests unlock code. So basically the phone is useless for network data but will work fine as a mini tablet i suppose connected to WIFI.
So with that explanation does anyone have any idea on bypassing this or removing this entirely, not even to use overseas but just on the ATT network!
Additionally
ATT provided me with another Atrix to alleviate my troubles so im not entirely phoneless. However I would like to sell one of these and possibly purchase the GS2 0_o
I have contacted 3 cell phone unlocking sites explaining the situation and only one has responded but not with any answers.
HELP!
if you got a new phone, is it still asking for a network unlock code?
No. Its working fine, but I still have this perfectly good working phone I would rather use and sell the brand new one. Unless I cant get rid of this unlock problem I suppose Ill sell it as is. Any takers?
Hi, I talk to att once when i want to unlock my atrix and they told me if the phone is more than six months old the give you the unlock code for free.
so for the atrix if that is your phone you can ask att for your code since august 21.
just call att customer support.
hope this help.
try a diff sim card with data plan and see if it still asks for code
or try flashing a custom rom
I suppose I was not clear in the OP. ATT DID provide this code for me. I did flash a custom rom already.
As far as using a different SIM card I tried to use a second SIM that ATT provided and still nothing.
I am assuming this is a very unique situation and probably wont find any answers unless someone has successfully unlocked the phone by flashing some special ROM.
Flashing a ROM of any kind will never sim-unlock your phone.... ever. period.
The only way to resolve this is through AT&T. The only way to sim-unlock is with the code it requests.... must have proper code. That is the only way. So, I would talk to AT&T about it, in person, at a local store.
I unlocked the inspire 4G simple by rooting and flashing a custom rom didnt ask for network password after that it worked on tmobile
With edge service no. 3g or 4g different bands between tmobile and att

Just the info I was looking for. Basically the phone is boned in that case. Spent a good with with ATT advanced tech support and motorola to no avail.
What I do want to know is WHERE this information is stored out of curiosity. It seems the modding community would have tinkered with some hacks to remove the sim lock at some point.

Tried to screen shot it but it wont allow in the screen. The request comes as soon as I turn the phone on. If I dismiss it I can use the phone I just wont have cellular access.
Ok so I am reposting and not editing as I feel this deserves a bump.
I got my new Atrix unlock code from ATT today and tried it on the new Atrix I received and that one ALSO will not unlock.
Is there ANY ATT Atrix sim unlocked and if so how did you go about doing it? I have only found one thread and no response via PM.
How to SIM unlock Atrix!
I have read both your post and I believe you used a ATT sim card that was not in use or a GO phone Sim card. Am I correct so far? To sim unlock you have to insert a non ATT sim card!! No go phone sim card or a non active att sim!
Call one of your friends and borrow a Verizon sim or Tmobile sim. You only have 5 tries to do this. So as for your first Atrix I believe it is already locked permanently to ATT. Dont ruin your second Atrix.

Well I found that if you push #073887* in the dialer it will actually prompt you for the unlock code. I tried this with NO sim in at first and that is when it said it was unsuccessful. However late last night I inserted my ATT SIM back in and tried again just for ****s. Entered in #073887* and typed the unlock code and viola, it worked. Interesting information for anyone who wants to unlock there Atrix WITHOUT another carriers SIM!
But back to my original issue. I wouldn't mind if the original atrix was locked to ATT, at least I would still be able to use it. The problem is that it wont work with ANY SIM. My thoughts is that it is a glitch and locked the phone to... nothing?
To make matters worse I emailed cellunlocker.net explained the issue and they said they thought if they requested a carrier unlock code it would work. Paid the 20 and 10 minutes later they sent me the same unlock code ATT had provided. Now the hassle of obtaining a refund.
are you selling the phone?

Yea. Both.
you have to use a *different* sim card than your regular carrier uses (ex - I'm on AT&T, so i used a Boost Mobile Sim to unlock my Atrix) You cannot use YOUR sim to sim-unlock.

Yes you can, by the method I explained in my previous post. It works!
There may be some confusion. The one im referring to (the original ATRIX) will not unlock with an ATT sim, a TMOB sim, a verizon SIM, or even a Costa Rican SIM. NO matter WHAT the SIM is in the "original" phone it always prompts me for a SIM unlock password. Like I said I believe it to be a glitch, intending to lock it to the ATT SIM but in reality it locked it to NO SIM.
So to restate.
YES you can unlock an ATT Atrix with only an ATT SIM in the phone using the method I explained. ( I did it with the phone in my hand right now)
and
NO my original Atrix will not unlock regardless of SIM installed or method.
i will send you a p.m with my offer
Just out of curiousity did you ever set up the sim card lock feature in the location and security settings. It will ask you for the unlock code every time you turn your phone on...shot in the dark here....

[Q] International Use

So let me make a long story short.
I am in the military
I am deploying soon
I bought the Photon 4G to use while deployed
(gave the EVO 4G to wife to use while I am gone)
What I was thinking:
Photon 4G uses GSM as well as others
(I am going to Afghanistan, and GSM 900 I think is the used band there)
I bought a SIM card through a company called MTN Afghanistan
As they are the only provider offering service to the are of Afghan that I
will be going (use I know there are others, but MTN is confirmed the provider used by people in the area I am going, therefore why try something new if you know of something that works)
What I plan to do:
Already scheduled to put my Sprint account on a military hold
(means I do not get charged for my phone until I turn it back on
when I return)
I do this because I found Sprint International is not in my area over there as well.
So I was told by sprint international that they can give me an unlock code.
But I am being told by others, that I need to unlock my phone.
I leave in two weeks and need help.
I have searched the boards and found a lot of guilds about unlocking and everything, I have done roms on all my other devices and such.
I just want to make sure that the UNLOCK that I am thinking about
(using the Sprint Photon 4G in Afghan, on someone elses service)
There I is no sim unlock for the photon. Internationally it defaults to unlocked. No root/unlock required. That being said, some roms seem to handle gsm a little better than stock.

Mine worked great with stock rom. Had to do nothing extra to get it work.. I live in India. Lol my photon was not even activated!
I have a Photon and also use Sprint. When going abroad, to use abroad you simply set the phone to "GSM" from automatic or CDMA to ensure that Sprint doesn't charge you for international roaming.
Well I'm rooted, unlocked, and use cm7.2 and have had no problems in Australia and saudi.*#*#4636#*#*
Works with all sim cards.
I just like cyanogenmod and all the modifications,I also think aosp roms seem to have better signal strenth.
Cm 7.2 delivered a strong GSM signal for me using telstra and zeam

Thanks
Thanks for all of the replies.
I was just worried because I recieved my SIM card I plan to use in Afghan and when I removed Sprints SIM Card, I turned the phone on and nothing was different.
It still connected to Sprint and everything (with no SIM Card) Even made calls.
So then I added the new SIM Card (the iternational one, by MTN Afghan,) and still, Sprint Service as if the SIM Card was doing nothing special. Never asked me for unlock or anything.
That is why I was wanting to make sure there is nothing special I need to do.

[Q] Aria as a Gophone?

I have been on an escapade with Google and have received mixed results, so I will turn to my last resort!
My question is, what does it take to use the HTC Aria with a GoPhone SIM card? I have read it will not work, it will work with no issues, and it will work after a SIM unlock. My cousin currently has an HTC Surround and it works fine with his prepay account. He desperately wanted to move back to Android and seems to adore the Aria so I picked up a broken one for cheap with intentions to replace the digitizer next week. Long story short he popped his SIM card in the phone and it does not work.
Both the Surround and the Aria are smartphones from AT&T, different OS or not they should both work if one does. I know he wanted my old Inspire before the rain took it and we encountered the same problem, his SIM wouldnt work. Could it be as simple as carrier unlocking the device or are all the people just getting lucky and their device works with the GoPhone card?
The Aria is currently running CM7, it is of course rooted but is carrier locked if that could be the culprit.
Any help is appreciated, thanks guys and gals! :good:

[Q] Authenticity & Blacklisted???

Hi, I have a few questions:
1) How do you check the authenticity of the S5? What I mean is to make sure I have not acquired one of those cheap rip off's that look like a gs5, feel like one, but in reality that is NOT one...cloned gs5 with inferior quality in other words?
2) How can I check to see if the phone is blacklisted WITHOUT a sim card?
3) How do I check to see if its region locked or carrier locked?
I've browsed through 10 PAGES looking for info that I have not came across yet, which is why Im posting it here.
Edit: I also need to know how to check if the bootloader is locked as well.
1. You really never know. You would need to see it in person.
2. Plug the IMEI into swappa.com to see the status.
3. You can't unless you have it in person and test another SIM card.
4. The bootloader is unlocked for all G900T phones. No way to lock it.

I have the G900T in person...any idea's for what I need to look for?
Having an unlocked bootloader is what every one prefer to have, correct? I forgot why its important to have an unlocked bootloader...haven't touched this subject since the Evo lite came out (one with keyboard)
Will any sim card from any network work? Or would it need to be another sim card from T-Mo? Actually I need to brush up my understandings on sim cards as well, I've never owned a phone that required a sim card. Looks like I already have my work cut out for me, a whole lot of damn reading to do

If you have it, just download the app "CPU z" and post a screenshot here. I'll be able to tell if it's real or not.
Any sim card from ANOTHER carrier will work. A tmobile sim card is useless because it's meant to work with it.
Go here: http://swappa.com/esn to check if it's blacklisted or financed. You can get the IMEI from the Settings>About menu.

Unable to activate rooted HTC One M8 on AT&T after FreedomPop

First of all, I'm not sure if this is better suited for the M8 section or a more general section, so if it should be moved, please do so mods.
A while ago I gave my HTC One M8 running LeeDroid to my dad, who has been using it on FreedomPop. The other day, he took it in to an AT&T corporate store to switch it over to them, but they were unable to get it to work. They tested the SIM they were using in another phone and it worked there, but his phone wouldn't activate. The guy told him it could be because AT&T has started blocking rooted phones from activation, though that sounds a bit unlikely, and I'm not seeing anything about it, so I don't think that's the issue. I should also mention before I gave it to him I was using it on AT&T, until the USB port broke so I got a new phone, after which I fixed the port and gave it to him.
I'm thinking one of two things is happening: they still have the phone in their system from before and that's preventing it from being reactivated (though AFAIK that shouldn't be an issue), or FreedomPop has it locked to them, but I'm not even sure they can do that with a GSM phone since I would think the lock would be on the SIM card, not the phone. Are either of these possible/likely, or could it be because it's rooted and AT&T has changed their policy, or is there something else going on that I'm not considering? Any ideas?
https://support.freedompop.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3308/
My bet is that FreedomPop has the phone locked to them.
Had to Google for FreedomPop, to see what it is. But looking at what I read (and the link provided above), they use the Sprint network, which is a CDMA network. And also it looks like a Sprint phone is mandatory for use on FreedomPop. So all this means to me, that you have the Sprint variant M8. And Sprint phones (due to their CDMA support) are difficult, if not impossible to work on AT&T. With most "GSM" phones, you just put the SIM in the device, and there really shouldn't be any "activation" needed (provided you have a working SIM). But CDMA devices are different. While the Sprint M8 is designed to use some foreign GSM SIMs when travelling abroad, getting them to work on a US GSM network (like AT&T) is difficult to impossible. The Sprint M8 is probably not even the same hardware as the AT&T version M8, although the information is somewhat contradictory on this point.
In short, I don't think your problem has anything to do with root, or it having been used on FreedomPop, per se. The problem is the hardware itself not being compatible with the AT&T network.

As mentioned, it's a GSM phone, specifically it's the AT&T branded version, and has successfully been on the AT&T network before.

Don't see where you mentioned that in your top post.
I know you posted to the AT&T M8 device section. But the notion that it is the AT&T (or any GSM version M8) contradicts the statement that the phone was used on FreedomPop. If it's a GSM version (like AT&T) it wouldn't work on a CDMA network like Sprint. And from what the info shows, Sprint is the network used by FreedomPop.
If it were the AT&T version, or any unlocked GSM version, you would be able to just put the AT&T SIM in the phone, and it would work. No "activation" is required. The SIM lock is on the phone (not the SIM), and the only way a phone could be SIM locked (after being unlocked) is by possessing the phone itself, and relocking it.
Root doesn't matter either. All my phones have been rooted, and work fine on AT&T. Again, I just put the SIM in, and it works.
Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results. Delete IMEI and serial number before posting. This will tell us conclusively what version of the phone, and may give us other clues what the problem is.
