Hi, everyone. I'm used to rooting/ROMing/etc. on the Samsung Epic, but I'm very new to the Thunderbolt. I rooted my girlfriend's phone and had some problems with the data connection being inactive following a kernel install. I went back to as close to stock as I could in order to get everything working again, but new problems have surfaced:
1. GTalk crashes
2. Camera fails to open
3. Documents fail to open, as in Word
4. Phone fails to update, though it indicates an update is ready
Right now, she's on a pretty much stock Froyo ROM and what I believe is the stock kernel, or something very close.
I've read a bit about the camera and gtalk problems. I saw a link to a CWM flashable zip that apparently fixes the date problem that causes the closes. However, it wasn't clear if that zip was only for GB for if it also works for Froyo. Please advise on that.
I haven't seen any reference to the document opening problem, unfortunately.
As far as the update thing goes, I'd rather keep her on a custom ROM, as I assume the update will kill her root.
Basically, I'm looking for a stable and reliable kernel, ROM (preferably GB), and radio combination that is known to run without issues. Last time I tried to pick a combo myself, it ended up killing the data connectivity, so I'm trying to figure out the "best" combination that is known to work. Also, if there are any Thunderbolt-specific flashing procedures that tend to cut down on force closes and errors following a flash, please let me know.
Thanks a lot,
-Rob
When you say update, you mean OTA? If so, you have to be 100% stock to get an OTA to install. You can't have a custom recovery installed.
Pretty much all the GB ROMs out there are pretty stable. The question is, do you want a Sense ROM, or AOSP?
As far as kernels go, Imoseyon's kernels are top notch. I prefer jdkernel for AOSP ROMs though.
I use the latest OTA radio and have 0 problems, and it works for both froyo and GB ROMs.
...
Thanks a lot for the response. I'd like to keep on the Sense side of things, just to keep the user experience sort of like stock for the girl.
So, to go one step at a time:
First, the radio. Is this the latest OTA radio that you mentioned (MR2?): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154010
Second, the kernel. It looks like nerozehl has a great kernel that's based off of Imoseyon's leankernel. There are so many versions, though. Would the latest Sense kernel 2.3.6 (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099996) be appropriate, considering the ROM below?
Last, the ROM. It looks like SynergyROM is a good place to start. I believe the latest one is found off the download link near the top of this page: http://infectedrom.com/showthread.p...IGHTLYS-2.3.4-SENSE-3.0-★-☆-★?p=4368#post4368 Any thoughts on SynergyROM?
Does that combination seem like one that should work correctly?
Also, just so I have the steps correct for installation:
1. Flash radio in hboot.
2. Wipe in CWM (cache, dalvik cache, anything else?)
3. Flash kernel in CWM.
4. Flash ROM in CWM.
5. Reboot.
Thanks again for any help. It is definitely much appreciated. Can't go around breaking the girlfriend's phone, after all...it just looks bad!

There is an issue with the lib files for the Camera ,which is messing up Gtalk. There is a fix in several threads, something HTC did on the new base.
Here is the fix:
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?8436-Flashable-G-talk-Camera-Fix
...
Thanks, fillyo! I assume this works for both GB and Froyo ROMs?
-Rob
If you flash the kernel before the ROM whatever kernel comes built in to the ROM will overwrite the kernel you just flashed. I would say ROM, kernel, radio.
Oh and when you wipe I would do:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. wipe cache
3. Advanced, wipe dalvik cache
4. Under mounts and storage select format /system

JBO, thanks for the advice. That makes a lot of sense. Do you have any comments on the radio, rom, kernels I've selected above? Particularly the radio. I was told the latest OTA radio works well, but is that the one also knows as MR2?
Thanks,
-Rob

Yes the MR2 radio will work with that ROM as well as any leaked radio that is newer than the MR2. What radio works best is kinda subjective and seems to vary from person to person. I don't know if the kernel you linked is compatible you would need to ask in the Synergy thread. Honestly as far as the kernel goes I would just use the one built into synergy. I hear its quite good and has a great set of features.

I've used SynergyROM and it is an awesome ROM. It comes with Ziggy's kernel, which is an awesome kernel. The OTA Radio basebands are 1.39.00.0627r, 0.01.69.0625r
I hope you find a ROM/kernel/radio combo that works for you!
That's exactly the info I needed. I'll just stick with the built-in kernel and the MR2 radio. Thanks for all the help, guys.

Hi guys, so yesterday I decided to take the plunge and unlock my evo 3d with htc's tool. It seemed to work as expected (s-on with unlocked banner). I was then able to flash cwm 4.0.1.4 and root using the su zip floating around on here.
My issue seems to be that aside from the nandroid backup I made all the roms I have tried break wifi giving the wifi error instead of on or off. I tried synergy rom, viper rom and viper rom with silverneedle. I also noticed when I was flashing in recovery it would say unable to mount sd-ext and it looked like under the settings> about phone> software information that the kernel had not changed.
I'm at a loss as to why, but I think it may be related to htc's unlock method, although I am fairly noob and may be totally wrong. Any help is appreciated.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Since you used the HTC method then you have the newest OTA updates and bootloader. Your banner should say S-OFF though if you had a typo above about that.
You cannot flash a new kernel yet with the new hboot. You need to stick with the stock one for now.
When flashing other ROMs are you doing a complete wipe first? If not, that might be your problem.
Go to the Development section. Many useful instructions and guides are there.
That's what I was afraid of, but that wasn't a typo. My bootloader says ****UNLOCKED**** with S-On. I was reading that this was what was to be expected with the htc unlock though.

If it's still letting you use Super User and says you're rooted then it should be OK I guess. The main thing is when switching to a completely new ROM you should always do a full wipe - everything except sdcard.
There's a superwipe zip you can flash in recovery that will do all the necessary wipes for you.
I was wiping data/cache and dalvik cache. I'll take a look at the superwipe zip. I'm ok with stock rooted for now but it would be nice to use roms at some point.
Sent from my Shooter using XDA App
Yeah just wiping cache and dalvik isn't going to work. New ROM means backing up apps (if you want), then full wipe. That will wipe the system and data too (and I think android.secure and sd-ext).
Ok. Finally got everything to work. I used superwipe but I also had to use one of the synergy nightlies based on 2.3.4 to get my radios to work properly. Currently running synergy build 331 and it runs great. Thanks for the help

I have the same problem:
wifi error
Kernel doesn't change
Also my Android version now shows 2.3.3
Can you please tell me how you got it fixed?
Sorry I'm a noob... Details would help. Thank you
if you upgraded to HBoot 1.5 and used HTC's unlocker you have to install a 2.3.4 ROM or the WiFi and possibly 4G radio will break. If you are interested in Synergy ROM try their RLS1 build or any build version 319 or newer
i cant post a url here cuz i am still a new user on the forums but go check out the official nightly folder linked in the following thread:

I installed VillainROM 2.4.2 (ninphetamine-2.0.4 kernel) on my Bell Galaxy S2 phone a really long time ago and have been satisfied with it so I never bothered updating or anything. Now I'm a little bored with it and have been thinking about trying out ICS via CM9 nightlies. I just have a few questions before I give this a go since I'm out of the loop when it comes to modding:
1) To install CM9, do I just put it on my SD card and flash with CWM after doing a factory reset and clearing the cache? Or does jumping from a GB kernel/ROM to an ICS kernel/ROM require an extra step?
2) My version of CWM is probably old, so will I run into any problems trying to install CM9? I don't remember what the version is, but it's whatever version that came with the ninphetamine-2.0.4 kernel. If I need a more current version of CWM, how would I go about installing it?
I think that's all.. Thank you for reading.
As long as you follow the instructions, it doesn't matter what you're coming from. See full instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102
Notice that for the CWM method, the third instruction is to flash a particular CWM recovery to avoid potential problems. There are instructions on how to flash on the link to it.

Easy enough upgrade path
If you are worried about doing this, flash the ODIN "resurrector" CM9 package - it should sort out wiping and everything else for you.
If you want to do it via zip, put the zip file on the SD, do a nandroid backup, wipe data and cache, then flash the zip and latest ICS gapps.
I don't think you'll have any issues with installing CM9 using that CWM. If you do, ODIN flash latest Siyah Kernel. Go to recovery and flash CM from there and you'll be fine
Thanks for the help guys. I went with the CM9 Odin Resurrection method and then updated to the latest nightly (20120511) with CWM.
I'm very impressed with what I see so far. I'll have to keep an eye on it, but I am a little worried about the battery life. (Though considering that I am on a nightly build, less than optimal battery life might be expected..)
Also, my signal strength seems to be fluctuating a bit, usually between 3 and 4 bars, although sometimes it will go down to 2 bars. The modem that came with this build is XXLPQ. Is there a better modem that I can try, or is it just a matter of going through all of them? I was on MUGKG2 previously and it was quite stable for me.
I think LPQ must be your earlier Modem which is retained after instlling CM9, if I am not wrong CM9 doesnt contain a modem.
try KE7 modem, I have got a very nice experience with KE7 on ICS roms
I did a complete wipe of my fascinate (on a Powerwashed 2.2 rom). I then installed TeamHacksung Build 2 (as advised by the AOKP folks). I then flashed AOKP build 37 (glitched).
Everything works great, except my phone seems to cut out a few seconds (or minutes) into a call. I can no longer hear the person or they can't hear me, even though the call is still connected. Do I need to flash a new radio? Or did I need to wipe after installing the TeamHacksung rom before flashing AOKP? I assumed since I wiped the Powerwashed 2.2 rom that my phone was ready to go.

Yes. From Droidstyle's guide...
Step 22: Long press power key, select reboot, select recovery, WIPE DATA, Install ICS zip from sd that you downloaded in step 20. then Install gapps zip from sd that you downloaded in step 21, Reboot!
Okay, I've wiped the phone about 5 times now following all directions and most of my calls still go silent 10 seconds in or so.....BAD NEWS!
I need to fix this ASAP! Should I go back to the last "milestone" build of AOKP, or are there other troubleshooting steps I can take?
have you started completely from scratch by going back to stock gingerbread, and followed all the instructions to the letter in the guide? What rom were you on before and did you have the same issue? Try another GB rom then try a different ics rom.

I was never on the stock GB rom. I went from stock Froyo to Powerwashed Froyo. I flashed a few different radios because I kept missing calls. I ended up on EC09.
Then I did the TeamHacksung -> AOKP 37 update. It looks like I am now on radio EC09 in AOKP 37. Would going to stock GB and then back really make a difference? Or should I try a different radio? Do I still need to flash radios through ODIN when I'm on an ICS build?
The ROMs do not include a radio. EC09 is what most people have the best luck with. Its also what I'm using with ICS. I'm running THS though, never have cared for AOKP, personal preference.
I have the least amount.of trouble flashing back to stock (personally use ED05), then going to whatever ROM want to run.
Have you tried switching to a different kernel?
You can flash whatever radio you want. There is a whole section here with all of the radio downloads. It is not really fair to say that most people use a certain radio as that is not true. People use the radio that works best for them. Try some of them out for yourself. I am using the ei20 radio if I recall and have non issues with that one.

So you went directly from a Froyo ROM to an ICS ROM without following the proper steps to get to ICS? That's definitely a no-no. You really should just follow all of the steps in droidstyle's guide for flashing an ICS ROM. I can almost guarantee you will see your issue with calls go away if you follow every step. It sounds like you are jumping all over the place and not starting at the beginning. That is just asking for issues.
Okay, I have gotten so blasted close with getting a custom rom on this phone. I can get them installed now and they are wonderful I tried gummy and aokp but for the life of me I can not get data to work I can not make or recieve phone calls. I am in roaming all the time too. I have gone through all settings and scoured the forum and I can not find an answer anywhere. Am I missing something totally obvious here? Does anyone maybe have any suggestion? Thank you guys for your help. It's just frustrating that I am so close.

What is the status of your Photon currently? Assuming it is rooted and unlocked, running what rom? Please provide info on what rom you are on now, which one you flashed from, and what process you used to get where you are. The more info provided the easier it will be to help.
Well lets see, currently I am back on stock, but here is what I did. I rooted, unlocked, installed CWM 5.0.2.7 I also flashed jokers recoveryv3 ( I follow QB's videos) So then I installed the gummy rom using this process. Format system, format data, format cache, wipe cache then dalvik cache. flash rom, flash rom again ( now I did not reboot into recovery after I flashed the rom the first time) I just went straight to install rom again. flash gapps, fix permissions. Reboot up and good loving it all. Waited 15 min then rebooted again. That's it. So I am at a loss. Thanks for help if you need any other info please let me know.
Oh I am on 2.3.4 with 198_7 also
In your system settings did you have "home only" or "automatic" selected for your roaming settings? For a lot of these roms, "automatic" is forced roam. And then if you didn't have roaming data enabled, that would explain why you were constantly roaming with no data.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
Thanks so much .
I did have automatic checked but I did have roaming data enabled also. I flipped it around too with home only. I am truly beginning to think my phone is just plain "off " who knows. It's a shame though, I mean not that stock is bad on this phone but the custom roms are so much better imo. This is the first phone I have ever had a problem with. I have been flashing phones for years. Think I started with a HTC Mogul. That was a solid phone LOL
Does CM7 work for you? If it does then I reckon flashing that and setting it up, then instead of doing a full wipe keep your data and flash CM9 based rom over it, fix permissions and take it from there.
I have not tried CM7 but I can, sure can't hurt to try at this point. Thanks, I will give that a try tomorrow.
Have you tried *#*#4636#*#*? Sometimes flashing changes the radio in that menu. Be careful though, changing something can really Bork your phone. It should be on cdma prl I think

Deb, my photon has never been kind to me with the 'flash twice' method. It always results in no data. Try cm9 again, but this time wipe cache, system, data, and dalvik, install version 3.1 of cm9, boot into it, reboot to recovery, wipe cache and dalv, then install the latest cm9 version. Always works for me. Good luck

Looks like joker's site may be down so I need to try and find the 2 cm9 roms
I have this rom saved already on my computer

Wonder if I should try that one or just wait

Glad someone provided you with that 3.1 link. Looking forward to see if it works out for ya.
By the way, you will know it worked if when you boot up in 3.1 you have working data. Flashing the newer version after that will essentially just update everything.
Deb, I take it the flash of 0.3.1 didn't work? Did you have data and then lose it when you flashed 0.6.9.3? What were your exact steps. I just rooted/unlocked and flashed my f-in-law's new photon and it worked just fine. Lemme know what you did and maybe I can help more

Thanks bullfrog that's nice of you but honestly I'm good now As you know.
I didn't even try to install 0.3.1. I kept thinking about it, seeing I had no luck with 2 others previously so I decided to go the MIUI route and I'm a happy camper with that one. I am a flashaholic for sure, as we all are here. I am thinking though, I am gonna just be happy with where I am at for now. Of course I will most likely decide to give another rom a try at some point.
Of course I am already eyeing a few Samsung Epic touch's on ebay. I hear that one can be a brick just waiting to happen....weeeee I am having way too much fun
I'm glad you made it to MIUI. if you ever want to try cm9 or and of the similar ones (aokp, gummy, paranoid) I would suggest flashing that 0.3.1 first, then updating to the latest cm9, then flashing the variant

Before you reply - let me lay a story for ya!
I bought a bran new TBolt off of my friend. I was using a fascinate up to that point and never had any issues. I loved my fassy - it was fast, reliable, and everything worked well.
Now onto the TBolt - I got the SOFF, rooted, got recovery, and got a few Roms. It is still working fine. What's the issue?
Well, I posted this on this forum and other forums more than once, but I can never seem to get an answer. After a few ROMS - Infected, Vicious, ThunderShed - I get a splash screen, or if it does boot it freezes as soon as it accesses the radio components. I have CM7.1 on it right now, ran liquid, vicious miui and other roms. Most roms do work in fact without any problems - but the few that I heard are amazing - do not.
What I have done:
Made sure my recovery is upgraded: I have tried latest CWM, EXT, CWM Touch, and the other one that was popular - all updated and did not work.
Always make sure to wipe: I always format all partitions. I have even used the Superwipe script as well, but to no avail.
I have installed a stock rom, wiped and then installed: Someone said that would work - it did not.
Double, no - triple checked my roms': Checked the MD5 sum of all ROMS and Recoveries.
Different Radios: My phone came with newest radios, and I downgraded, upgraded, and nothing.
Now, I do not mean to sound picky - but I am not happy with the TBolt at all. It works at half the quality that I had from my fassy. Wifi errors out sometime, Tether errors out sometime, it lags some of the time, and most of all - no ICS. Liquid worked well, but the touchscreen wouldn't respond during some games - not that I use it for gaming much anymore - but the idea remains.
It sounds like you are trying all of the right things, so unfortunately I don't really have anything helpful to offer. Just curious though, If you were happier with the fascinate, why stop using it? Did it break?
As far as your issues, I have found CM 7 based ROMs (or any roms not based off of sense builds) to be less reliable and have more "glitches" than sense roms. That certainly could explain some of your gripes with the TB. Have you been able to install any Sense roms other than stock?
I have long since settled on Chingy's gingeritis rom as the most reliable and feature filled, but obviously that opinion differs depending on who you talk to.
To answer your question first: I started using the TBolt because it was 4G and that was important for me at the time (I was a student and had no reliable internet). Things have changed now and I am most likely going to change back sooner than later.
I haven't tried many Sense roms. Which would be the most reliable and recommended?
I know you said you tried downgrading your radios and that your phone came with the newest ones flashed but if you haven't already done so, check this out.
