I would also like this, it would just give my left hand something to do rather than getting in the way of the camera sometimes.
Also a hard ware button would feel so much more natural when aiming and shooting.
Its been done before cause look here for another device:

Someone just needs to mod the camera.apk from the galaxy s2 I think. pulser has done some mods on it, maybe he can do this.
Not quite what you were asking, but Vignette allows you to use the volume keys as a shutter button.
Yeah the thing is the volume keys are set to zoom, and the power button isn't really doing anything in the camera app, so power button is better. Plus its on the top.
Once devs have bought SGS2 then expect work on stuff like this .
Speed the process up donate SGS to dev .

Hello,
I'd like to have this too
Power button for shooting
This would help me out alot cuz I shake a bit!
This sounds like a great idea. Sometimes you can't hit the button. THis would go part way to taking the sting out of not having the slick Sense 3.0 lock screen to launch the camera.

Well, for me taking photos with the home button(big as it is) would suffice too!
Yes!!! I didn't think of the home button. Great idea! In WebOS that'd be a patch.
I am working on this, i have allready decompiled camera.apk but camcorder.smali seems totally different. Mayabe the original developer can help us with that.

The zoom is just digital zoom and you end up cropping the edges and getting a soft image anyway. Also, you can just flip the camera and then the volume button is on top. The camera app rotates to follow your orientation.
Home- or Power-Button!
Both solutions are greatly appreciated!
Sorry to post it here, but i can´t post in development area until i reach 10 posts :-D

maan this is wonderful, is there a big difference in quality between a 16khz sample and a 44khz?
I'm sorry if there is another thread/post about this, but I searched and couldn't find one. With the new update, 2.08.651.2, I noticed that you can now take screenshots without having to root your phone.
This can be done by holding down the power button and pressing the home button.
The screen flashes, the phone vibrates (from pressing the home button) and it gives you a message telling you the screenshot was saved to camera shots. In your camera shots album, it will show the screenshot. The screenshot is an OK quality JPG.
All I got was a black pic, I also have my resolution set at 190 dpi, so that may have borked it. I use drocap anyway.

Yep. Just like you would on an iPhone/iPad. Just hold down the power button and click home. When you release the power button, it will tell you the screenshot was successfully taken, but it still takes the screenshot right when you press home.
There is an app called no root screenshot it on the market but its really annoying because you have to plug your phone into your computer every time you reboot

It wasn't until reading this thread and trying out the power-home combo that I realized my evo came with 2.3.4 right out of the box! LOL.... I'll stop hitting 'check now' like a maniac!

Loving my EVO LTE so far. Quick question on the camera button. I need to press my button very hard to get it to snap a picture. Is anyone else having this issue? Just wondering if it is a defect or if they are all like this. Thanks.
its a 2-button button. a 'soft press' (to the first resistance point) triggers focus, a 'hard press' (all the way down, past the first resistance point) takes the pic. its by design.
a 'long press' (holding down the camera button for 3 sec) will bring up the camera app if you are doing anything else, and a 'long press' while in the camera app will rapid-fire capture pics as long as you are holding it down.
Does everyone's camera make noise when snapping photos? I have no noise, and I have trouble knowing if my camera is rapid-firing or not.

Yours may be like mine, in that it seems like the button is not installed correctly. Mine has a distinguishable first stage, but I sort of need to mash it in to get to the second stage. I thought it was odd, but I knew it wasn't right when I tried out my wife's EVO LTE and hers has 2 clear, distinct stages, with no mashing in needed.
Mine is having rebooting issues anyway, so I'm hoping that my next EVO has the correct camera button press too.

I always have things on vibrate, but that's not considered silent mode I wouldn't think. Where can I change a setting that would make the camera make noise while my ring is set to vibrate?
nope. probably hidden. htc seems to have forgotten why Android better than iPhone and trying to dumb ics down to ios levels. options, apps,a ton of stuff is hidden or removed from this phone. try minimalistic text and look for camera settings or basic interface. I'll check around when home later
Isn't Minimalistic Text a clock widget app? I don't understand how this relates to the camera setting. What am I missing?
Sent from my EVO using XDA
no, it lets you make shortcuts and icons and widgets for anything possible on your phone. can see if it has any hidden camera settings menu built in anywhere
sorry, no camera settings. I did find a mirror app hidden though. I'll start a new thread about it

Its far, far from just a clock widget app. Its in my top 5 must download after flashing a new rom app.
I agree. I'd never heard of it til someone pointed me towards it to unhide polaris,(which you can do with es file explorer, another in my top 5) and I must say, its in my top 5 now too. so much you can do with this.
in fact, how do you use it for a clock widget?

Haha unless I'm thinking of the wrong app, I used it to show the time, date, location, and my battery temperature on my home screen on my EVO 4G.

Thanks. Based on everyone's input I am going to ask for a replacement phone. I really have to mash down the button to get a picture.
I can't find a thread for this for the S3, how do I disable the damn camera shutter noise?
Also - the screenshots, anyone know how to make it how it used to be with the home and power buttons?

Yes there's a thread floating around, I can't remember exactly where it is. But use root explorer and edit the shutter.ogg file iirc

Anyone else?, this little puppy had been out a few weeks now!
Wasn't this made not changeable *atleast within the default app* because of something that happened in Europe. About no spy camera shots or something.. They wanted the noise so you couldn't take hidden pictures. Or something along those lines..
So if thats for Europe chances are they will include the option to disable it in the US varient right?
Screenshot works for me just like the s2 did. Home + power. They need yo be pressed at exactly the same time and held for a second or two.

I've tried /dozens/ of times - it simply doesn't work for me.
To disable the shutter noise you need to delete the audio files, which requires root access.
Is there a way without deleting the files? Just replacing the apk so I can have an option of sound out not sound?
you can use pretty much any of the other hundreds of camera apps in the market. most of them will correspond to the volume setting of your ringtone so if you set the system sound to silent they will have no shutter sound.
my least favourite thing in the whole world is shuttersound, except in burst modes.

thats beacuse in s3 you have to hold both buttons one or two seconds.
you can do it too by dragging the side of your hand through the screen from left to right
The sad part is that because of a few people that deteriate the gene pool, we have to put up with that damnable shutter sound.
Thing is, if we replace the camera with another one on the market, which one would be better - the built in one or the market one? Does the built in camera app make those great shots or the hardware?
Open Root Explorer - Navigate to /system/media/audio/ui
Mount R/W
Rename shutter.ogg to shutter.ogg.bak or just delete it.
To undo, just rename it back

To mute camera just mute the phone with your volume buttons.
Screen shot still works with Power and home button just push and hold them for a couple of seconds.

This solution is quite widespread online but many people say it doesn't work for them.
I can confirm it's working for me - 16GB, pebble blue, Vodafone, UK - but it seems different markets can't stop the shutter sound this way.
Is there really no way to disable it without root
You want part 2 of this thread

Can something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266208 be made for us, eg hold the volume key in standby mode and launch the camera app, either with a mod like the above or an app?

+1, waiting for the screen to turn on and then open the camera usually results in a lost photo op. :|
And in the hurry, I tend to open everything on the homescreen but the camera

Exactly. Well a camera shortcut on lockscreen helps a lot but what I'm asking is a lot faster and guarantees you ll catch that critical moment Hope someone helps on that.

Even if it could be set up to just take a photo on say holding down volume, without opening up the camera app.
You wouldn't have time to frame the shots anyway.
There are a few apps which take photos by just tapping an icon, without opening up anything or a viewfinder.
Maybe mapping this to a hardware button? Would make taking a photo faster, saving on the second or 2 it takes to open the app.
