What SD card are you using, and... - HTC EVO 3D

would you give me a short evaluation of it?
I currently have a 16GB SanDisk Class 4 SD card that I bought at RadioShack for $29.99. I'm looking to see what people think as far as certain companies stack up and what the read/write speeds are as far as advertised/reported, and just a general summary of your card.
If you're interested in contributing, tell me what company made your SD card, how many gigs it holds, rate it on a scale of 1-5*, and then anything about your card that you feel others should know, i.e. it's rated at class 4 but you're getting class 10 speeds.
So, for myself, it would look like this:
- SanDisk Class 4
- 16GB
- 5*
- Card is reliable, I have had no problems with it, and using SDTools from the Market, it was showing 5.3Mb/s write and 10.6Mb/s read. I would recommend this to someone looking for a good card at a good price.
I'd love to have a lot of responses! Even if you're just using the stock 8GB card, I really want this to become a helpful guide maybe(?) for people to use when looking at getting a new card, because there is a lot of info out there and people are reporting different things for the same card.
So let me know what you're experiencing.

32gb Sandisk 4 class/grade, I've had it since I had my Evo 4g.

I get what would be class 12 speeds. Never had an issue. I had it in my OG Evo.

I'm using a 32GB SD card I think class 4 and samdisk ( it was the stock one the came with my HTC thunderbolt) I rate 5* , it was free and realiable
Here are my speeds

Card is amazing, I get well over 10 MB/s write speed and over 20 MB/s read speed, on top of 32 gigs of storage.

Transcend 32gb class 4,
It was only 50$, the write speeds are about 4mb/s with burts up to 6. The read speed is at 12mb/s. Its a class four card and performs like it. I love it.

Well guys I have a 16Gb Sandisk I think is a Class 2 it cost me around $20 like 4 months ago... and I would rate as 5 I never had any issues with it.. I get 6.6MB write speed and 19.1MB Reading.. I want a 32GB one but I don't know much about hope someone can recommend me a good one...
and Great thread...

Kingston class 10
32GB
4* (8.3 MB/s write, 19.2 MB/s read)
8.3 MB/s is acceptable for dayly usage, but i expected more of a class 10 card for the price I payed, thus 4*
Transcend class 6
16GB
5* (15.8 MB/s write, 17.4 MB/s read)
absolutely happy with the speed on this one
(not rating the few 2, 4 and 8GB class 4 cards of various manufacturers i got laying around)

PNY 16gb class 10. BUT I DO NOT RECOMEND, I have had the data on the card go corrupt on it 4 or 5 times in the 5 months I have had it. It was cheaper then the PNY 16gb class4 at best buy and now I know why. I'm actually about to head to the store right this second to get a new card.

SanDisk 32GB. Was listed as a Class 2 I believe but doesn't have a Class number on it. I have no complaints at all. Used it on my Evo 4G and now my 3D. Bought it direct from SanDisk when they ran a less than 24 hour sale( maybe a mistake) for less than $60 shipped. I get 6mbps Write and 13mbps Read. SanDisk always outperform there Class ratings though, can't go wrong with one of their storage cards!
EDIT: When swapping batteries today I pulled my sd card to have a look at it. It DOES say Class 2 on it. Very nice speeds for Class 2, but that's SanDisk for ya!

You mean SDXC cards? They're super new aren't they (read about Sandisk announcing a line of them just last week). No guarantee they're compatible with the EVO 3D, though the SDXC spec seems to read that it'll just be a firmware update to make SDHC drives compatible.
I know one guy mentioned he had ordered on over in the thread discussing the Sandisk announcement. No word from him yet.

sdxc
Yeah i have a microSD to SD converter so i can get cheaper and more capacity cards.. but then i realized the spec of the phone is 32gb. but is that only because microsd only goes to 32gb? I need to find someone with a 64gb card so i can test lol

Using a PNY class 10
16 gig
5* i typically see about 12mb write and about 18mb read when i transfer ROMs to/from my comp. it performs like that consistently.
i have always had good experiences with PNY. i use them religiously in all of my cameras. they are right up there with sandisk, and a tad bit less expensive. this is the first time i have used one in a phone, and i'll say it again (as i did in another thread), sandisk underrates their products, and PNY rates them exactly what they should be.
hope this was useful!

[Q] Which Micro SD card class should I go with

I'm looking at buying a 32 gig card, just not sure if I want to go back with a Class 4 card or should I look at a class 6 or class 10.... My Dell Streak recorded video was horrible, would sometimes crap out and come back during playback, audio in the video would get garbled & go away sometimes. Didn't know if this was due to the Streak itself or the class 4 PNY card I am using.
I do know that in my Ti2 camera going up to a class 6 or 10 card made a HUGE difference in write times, so I'm wondering if it would be the same in a droid phone like this....
Everything you will find online regarding class 4 vs 10 says go with the 10 when dealing with video. At the sale prices lately there isn't much reason not to. 30ish is what I just picked up one for (frys electronics)
I don't take enough video to notice

It's the same card I was talking about 2 posts earlier, same card I have. It's not really class 6 - it's a well known fact SanDisk is very conservative and underrates their cards' performance. I have benchmarked this card and it does better than class 10 microSDHC on both, read and write.
Make sure to format it to FAT32 - if you try to use it with default extended partition formatting it comes with - your phone won't recognize it.

You're really not gaining much by moving from class 4/6 to class 10 in a device like this. There's not really going to be much need in a tablet to have sustained write speeds like class 10 offers, and you won't notice the difference between those 3 classes unless you're really doing very specific things.

The class only determines the sustained write speeds. Different cards will read and write differently. Additionally, as far as 1080p playback is concerned, that really depends on multiple factors such as sustained and burst read speeds, cache size, and video decoding method. With a good class 4 card, you could still play 1080p back, but that's why I stated 6 as well. For cost efficiency, I would use a class 6 card to get the best of all worlds.

The Lexar one:

Probably useless, but I had a spare SanDisk 2GB MicroSD card sitting around so I tried it and it worked. It has no class marking, so it's probably a class 2.

Recommendation: fastest and most stable Micro SD card?

I am looking for recommendation for a 32Gb Micro SD card that is the fastest and most stable for use in the AT&T Note.
Currently I have the following but they're not good:
- Kingston 8GB Class 6: REALLY slow - tansfer rate below 1 Mbps
- Transcend 32GB Class 4: slow - transfer rate about 2-3 Mbps
Both were bought from Amazon and as you can see, even a Class 6 MicroSD can have lower performance than Class 4, depending on the manufacturer.
You can check your MicroSD card speed using this tool from Google Play. The screenshot from that app shows some insane card speed, as shown below:

Thanks all for the recommendation and the screenshot!
Looks like Samsung and Polaroid CLASS 10 is the way to go. I will research the price and buy on of these.
By the way, a friend of mine recommended the NEW Sandisk SDXC. They seems to be more expensive, but if the performance is similar to regular MicroSD, what will be the advantage?
I think most any class 10 will provide similar results. There are some that guarantee certain speeds, and they may be better performers, but you'll often pay a bit more. The class refers to the speed, most manufacturers will report their best case scenarios to qualify for a higher class rating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speed_Class_Rating So you'll find some class 10's do out perform others and such.
SDXC just refers to the capacity the cards can support. I believe SDXC supports up to 2tb vs SDHC is up to 32gb. (there are other technical factors too)
Just be sure that it is indeed a MicroSD card, and not just a normal SD card.

Not sure if anyone is still looking at this thread, but I just did this test on my phone with my 32gig Samsung Essential MicroSD card. I've owned it for a couple months now and as far as I can tell it's been rock solid.
Read speed was 9.7mbps
Wtite speed was 22.4mbps
Best part, it was only like $30 on NewEgg. Great deal for a class 10 card.
Not to further complicate things. There is another notable rating
Class 10 UHS-1
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-micro...DSDQUA-032G-U46A/dp/B007XZM6VG/ref=pd_cp_pc_1
Class 10 SDHC
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Mobil...51467765&sr=1-3&keywords=class+10+micro+sd+64
Pay close attention to the little symbol that indicates its rating. Don't be fooled by a lower value. The shape around it indicates a type.
So whats the deal? I have an answer for you. This ever confusing class and rating jargon can best be cleared up from the horses mouth.
Behold the SD Association and its wonderfully CLEAR explanation.
Yup its real. They are responsible for a great many things in the memory world. They even have provided all of us with the best SD format tool we can get our hands on for free. Because they know there SD stuff that's why!
So back to the ratings. I personally have not ever tested a UHS class SD in our device or any other phone for that matter. Based on this quote "UHS (Ultra High Speed), the fastest performance category available today, defines bus-interface speeds up to 312 Megabytes per second for greater device performance. It is available on SDXC and SDHC memory cards and devices." I would love to know if anyone has successfully used one.

Careful with the SanDisk UH devices... My 32gb SanDisk UH-1, bought from amazon and in retail packaging, was a pain in my Note from day one. The problem got worse over time... at first i thought it was just JB roms, not hardware. It constantly caused reboots, would unmount itself, and was slow, no matter which ROM was installed. After 3 months, it died last week... it mounts/dismounts every second it seem, even in my Mac or PC. Put in for an RMA with SanDisk... we'll see how that goes.
My old 16gb class 6 Transcend works great.

I use a Silicon Power 32GB Class 10 (SP032GBSTH010V10-SP)
It got 13.3 write /20 read
I'm consistently getting 8 MB/s Write and 35 MB/s Read in SD Tools. That read speed seems crazy-high for such an old card. I'm using a Class 6 A-Data card that I originally bought for my HTC Magic over 3 years ago. Not sure if it's random or sequential, though. I imagine that random is much more important wrt apparent speed browsing through things like photo albums and music folders.
EDIT: haha, OK so apparently you have to go into the root of your external SD card to get actual results. 8/18 on the AData

The best Sd card, under say £50 ? pleease. :)

hi guys, so far ive only done a quick e-bay search and came across the (San disk 64GB Mobile Ultra Class 10 UHS-I Micro SD SDXC Memory Card)
Its going for £45. i will go up to £50 if it can beat that. as in better for my HTC EVO 3D, it will be kept standard most likely and used for music, internet and movies. with camera used and camcorder often too.
i stupidly bought/bid/won a no brand 32 GB for £10. it worked fine till about 6 hours later and it doesn't recognise it at all, and its not been switched off or settings messed with. it works with no adaptors in the PC/laptops either.
so its not the phone, must be the card. any ideas ?
cheers
Please excuse the mistakes, i blame this cloudy cider i be drinkin' yarr.
The card your looking at seems nice. At least it's name brand this time.
The 3d officially supports up to 32GB, but people report running the 64GB ones with no issues. I'd get it.

Not sure which SanDisk card you are looking at but this one on amazon.uk seems to be compatible with the Evo 3D based on the second review on the US Amazon site.
I don't know how that compares to your eBay option, but I've heard some horror stories about people getting fake high capacity cards from eBay sellers that actually have much lower capacity, and I generally get what I'm expecting from Amazon.
I've read other places that currently Android doesn't really take advantage of anything higher than a class 6 card, but even if that's true you will be prepared for the future.

im sure the one you linked is the exact same as on e-bay.
cheers for the help.
using a class 2. 2GB sand disk in at the moment and its fine, not much storage space but it allows me to take 3d pics etc.. and have a few songs on while my 64GB arrives.

thanks.
ok i really want to order before i leave for work,
should i just get this 64GB sand disk class 10 at £45 delivered ?
cheers.
Hi yes sandisk or kingston make very good quality sd cards for an affordable price you should also go for class 6 for faster read and write speeds
They should most definitely under 50 euros if you buy online
Sent from me in my cardboard box
Well i made the plunge and got myself one.
yeah the 64GB does work, i just need to format it as it comes as factory formatted exFAT and i need to reform to NTFS.
sorted
Infact the one i have ordered is specific for android so i presume it has an app on the card which means i dont need to format it and change it.
here it is in its ;

I work in a retail store and one thing i noticed is that SD Card prices have gone down. You can Pick up a 32GB class 10 sandisk for £30. Its what i'm using and it's much faster compared to the class 4 8GB i originally got with the phone.

Hello there,
After took my time to consider about what to buy and choiced the ZU, I am now looking at which MicroSD to put inside and got really attract by the sandisk extreme pro in 32Gb. In term of perf in both random and sequential transfer are top notch and as been proved to be even higher than the actual transfer rate given by Sandisk (tested on computer). I saw several benchmark and it was proven to have about 2 times the transfer rate of a sandisk microsd ultra on a galaxy SIII and Note 2.
Now I wonder about how does it work on the Xperia Z Ultra, anybody have this card and did run a bench?

See the above link. Unless the ultra supports UHS-1 you will get class 10 performance. You will still get quicker than the normal class 10 cards but your not going to get the full achievable performance out of the card.

"Please be informed that UHS-1 (Ultra high speed) is equivalent to class 10. All UHS-1 memory cards have 10MB/s of minimum data transfer speed same as a class 10 card. There is no difference in the data transfer speeds of these memory cards and also they are identical in their technical specifications as well. All SDHC and SDXC class 10 memory cards that we are manufacturing are UHS-1 also."
Thats straight from Sandisk when i inquired a while back..
UHS-2 is 30MB/s
This is to be released 2014

Anyway I didn't make this post for trolling about cards, just wanna know if someone actually use it on the ultra and have some results. Always so annoying to talking about memory cards because each person have his own way of thinking about it. I am not a newbie memory card user, I know the details and how it work. So no need to come and say things that are not at they place on this thread.

Funny, really. I have already 3 different microsd class 10 from classic 8 gb to ultra 32 gb and I can tell that the transfer rate is really different. We are well in the 10 mb transfer rate guaranty but they can do far more than just this. I got big difference with swap partition on the 32gb ultra than the 32gb classic. Random and sequential access are grandly improved and same goes for the new extreme pro. And benchmarks on PC and Android show it too, or maybe everybody lie and bench are good to be throw on the recycle bin.

I have the 64Gb sanDisk Ultra UHS-1
In my galaxy s4 (octa-core) i get 10-12 Mb/s...
in my old Note i get 10-14 Mb/s...
Bloody strange! and clearly depends on the device

Its the devices that are holding these card back.. If you look at the test results on Androd police the cards are achieving much faster speeds in a card reader hooked up to a pc.

On HTC Sensation xe
Class 10 sandisk 8gb classic 10-12 Mb/s
Class 10 sandisk 32gb classic 10-16 Mb/s
Class 10 sandisk 32gb ultra 16-24 Mb/s
It is different! Root access modify read ahead and some other commands values and the ultra give better results. So if the phone can treat transfer better and modify some value that influence cache treatment and i/o database performances you can, with a better card have better transfer rate.

yeah of course i was rooted on both devices, but left the I/O read-ahead alone... but after the cache is gone, it still bottlenecks to the speed the card and device can handle. (I'm talking 100mb files for testing here)
I am looking more at the 64GB card

Android and new devices handle it very well. Old devices had trouble to handle 32gb but now it can take on 64gb without problem.

Thank you, Im glad to hear that! Yes I remember the days when having an SD card in my android device back in 2010, from time to time I had to stick it in the computer and delete the partition with gparted to start all over.
Got my microSD extreme 32gb and here as attachment a sd card bench with the internal memory as well.
The internal memory speed is really amazing, no wonder why games launch so fast. And it clearly show that Sony gave us a really amazing sdcard reader, 41/31 show performances above of what a microSD ultra can give.
For those interested to bench your memory you can use A1 SD Bench available on play store. For test your sd card you need to set the directory manually. /storage/removable/sdcard1 and for more accurate results select long test.
