[Q] Rooted my first time tonight, something went wrong? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey All, I rooted tonight Via Revolutionary tool but now my phone won't boot.
Basically, I followed all the steps with the tool, Got root and Clockwork and installed the SU.
I rebooted and had a rooted phone.
I proceeded to install Rom Manager, and I backed up my Rom (Created a Nandroid backup I believe thats what it was).
I then downloaded CM7 (the latest one in the Rom Manager) and installed it.
The phone rebooted for about 10 minutes with that CM7 Boot animation looping. I took the battery out, held down the volume button and used Recovery to recover my nandroid backup from before.
Now I'm trying to reboot it and its stuck on the White screen with the HTC Logo just sitting there.
Really unsure what to do...

Edit: this is all kind of assuming you flashed the newest clockwork recovery after you d/l ROM manager ( version 5x of clockwork recovery)
Seeing as how your phone won't boot you will need an sdcard reader to do this. So assuming you have one or another phone with internet you can swap the card into:go here and download the clockwork recovery version 4.0.1.5 and place it on the root of the sdcard. (not in any folders) rename the file to PG05IMG.zip EXACTLY and put the sdcard back in the thunderbolt. Now hold volume down plus power Untill the bootloader screen appears. (you may have to select bootloader from the list with the volume rocker and tap the power button to select it) once in the bootloader give it a minute and it will find the file and ask you to press volume up to update. Do it. When its done select reboot and then boot back into the bootloader and choose recovery. Now try restoring your backup. It should.work now. The problem is Clockwork recovery version 5.x is having issues right now with restoring backups.

Original problem of OP's CM7 install bootlooping was because he didn't wipe data/cache.
As for the white HTC screen it's hanging after restoring for some reason. People have reported this with CWR5 (if that's what you have) but I have been unable to reproduce it as of yet.
That said, it's probably only preventing that restore from booting. You should still be able to boot to hboot (pwr+VolDwn from an off state) and then select recovery at which point you can wipe data/cache and flash something from your sdcard. If you don't want to mess with an adapter to put something on your sdcard, you should still have CM7 on there. You said you used RomManager to download it so it should be in /sdcard/clockworkmod/download when you want to flash it.

Thanks so much! Since I couldn't get a quick response, I used an RUU and went back to complete stock S-OFF. Could you relink the clockwork recovery earlier version please? That link isn't working for me for some reason.
Thanks so much!!!!!!

^^^^^ Follow this to the T and you should be golden. Same thing was happening to me the other night and it all started after I updated to CWM 5.0.1.0
On another note after that debacle I switched to the unofficial TeamWin Recovery and have yet to have an issue. If you're interested you can flash it the same exact way as mentioned in the previous post but download the file from Rootzwiki
http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php...ery-Project-for-Thunderbolt-(8-8-1.0.3-rbox.2

OK. so let me update yall.
I installed the latest version of clockwork, before yes, and it F'ed me up with the looping bootloader.
I installed the older version of CW recovery, renamed it and flashed it with Hboot.
My Flashes now are all 100% not looping and booting perfectly.
Thanks all!

Double check the backup files. i had a similar issue and noticed the files were backed up as .zip instead of .img. You will probably need to install another rom through clockwork.

His problem with restoring the backup should be fixed now. Koush released CWR 5.0.2.1 which should have fixed the ext3 problem with sense roms.

bootlooping into clockworkmod Recovery v3.0.2.4

I had successfully managed to flash clockwork mod recovery using recovery flasher v1.3 and installed the zOMG ROM from here when I noticed that for some reason the home button was no longer working. I booted into recovery and did a data/factory reset, then tried to reapply the rom. (It was working well enough before the home button stopped working.) The problem is I never restarted back in Android. Every reboot of the clockwork mod recovery loops me back to recovery!
I have tried using my nandroid backup to restore things, and formatting the sdcard and copying files back on using the mount USB option (thinking maybe I had a corrupted copy) but still to no avail.
I'm wondering if the source of my problems is indeed the sdcard itself, since before I did the reboot into recovery I formatted the sdcard and copied the rom over to it. This removed the two files related to the kernal or recovery that were there before. Could this be why I am bootlooping?
Seriously, I need help here! I need my phone to work and cannot afford to replace it at this time.
Can anyone tell me what to do to fix this situation? Thanks!
--bornagainpenguin
Solved.
I was able to flash a different recovery from the command line using recovery flasher v1.3 and that allowed me to boot my phone directly into Android again. Then a few seconds later I was able to install RodimusROM and that seems to be working without issues. So I guess the biggest take away from this for me seems to be not to panic.

Can you help me out?
I S-OFFd my device and installed CyanogenMod Recovery v5.0.2.0 using the instructions from revolutionary.io. I installed the ClockworkMod ROM manager.
I don't know what i tried later, I did put PB99IMG.zip file in my SD card and i rebooted my device ---> went into the ClockworkMod recovery ---> used install from SD card option and selected the file PB99IMG.zip.
Before this ever happened when i put the zip file in my sd card and when i rebooted the phone is asked me this
Parsing..... [SD ZIP]
[1]...Bootlader
<Vol Up> Yes
<Vol Down> No
I selected Yes and it said updated. Then again i went to ClockworkMod recovery and used the install from SD card option and selected the zip file.
NOW WHENEVER I START MY PHONE ITS GOING INTO CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY, BUT NOT INTO ANDROID OS.
What should I do now??
Can you please tell me if i can solve the problem using recovery flasher v1.3??? and how could i do it???

[Q] Launching Clockworkmod Recovery w/o Rom Manager

Sup.
I'm currently experiencing some particular issue with my Legend which is CWM issue.
I used to install some ROM via CWM3 Fake-flash and since that I can't access CWM at all. Even ROM Manager doesn't help. CWM recovery just doesn't appear to be installed
But actually I remember that I was experiencing absolutely the same issue about a year ago and someone gave me an update.zip or something like that which loaded directly from stock android recovery (fastboot) and launched CWM Recovery! But I have no idea where this guy is etc.
So can someone give me this precious zip file?
Thanks in advance.
Cwm5.0.2
Same thing than cwm3 fakeflash, better.
Put it to the root of your sd.
Apply update.Zip thru recovery.
View attachment update.zip
Sup, thanks for this file but I can not use it because it's not signed. Can somebody sign it?
I have a similar problem. I updated my radio and since then my cmw has vanished... rom manager works, telephone is still rooted but no way to enter cwm, no nandroid backup and so on. when i reboot in cwm the phone stills stuck in a black screen with a phone image and a red triangle... wtf?
EDIT: nevermind... lot of time to my last flash, didn't push vol+ + power to enter cwm. embarassing

[Q] ROM install stopped at last step

I have a rooted TMo Vibrant running 2.1. I want to install a custom ROM and have the paid version of ROM mgr installed. I have downloaded the new ROM and I also have a (separate) zip of a different ROM on the SD card. The beginning steps of the installation go smoothly. But when I get to the point where ROM mgr says "Do you want to go into recovery mode to continue installation?" and I Select YES, the phone reboots into NORMAL mode and the installation ends. Same thing happens if I try to install manually from the SD card. I scroll down and select "install zip ...". Then the next screen that pops up has "reboot", " delete data", "reinstall packages", etc . I have tried all those options. But ultimately I end up back at the point where the only option I haven't chosen is "reboot system now". When I select reboot, the phone reboots in normal mode again. What am I doing wrong?
Not sure if this is your problem, but sounds like you need clockwork mod recovery update.zip on your phone.
Here is the trick though, when you get into normal recovery, sometimes you have to apply the cwm recovery update.zip TWICE to get into cwm recovery.
Boot up phone into stock recovery
apply the cwm recovery update.zip
phone reboots into stock recovery again
apply the cwm recovery update.zip again.
Hope that helps.
I would suggest doing this.
First and foremost make a nandroid backup, you can use cwm to do this. place a copy of the backup on your computer.
Backup your /efs folder which contains your nv_data.bin and imei information. You loose this you are f*cked.
Get the cwm recovery update.zip and put it on your internal sd root. If you have multiple update.zip files, just delete them all, just make sure the cwm recovery update.zip is there.
Also place the zip file of the rom onto your internal sd root also.
Disable voodoo lagfix if you have that installed.
Odin back to stock jfd 2.1. When finished next..
Apply cwm recovery update, apply TWICE to get into cwm recovery.
Then you can go into cwm recovery and select the zip of the rom you want to flash.
Follow all install directions of the ROM developer, they may want you to be on 2.2 first, which would mean odin to stock jfd 2.1, flash stock 2.2, then install whatever rom you are trying to.
That is how I do it.
I have a question about Clockwork recovery and this phone. Above you say that if any .zips are on internal sd to delete them and leave CWR on there only. I have this. Then if we want to go into the CWR we have to apply the update.zip twice. I do this also. Why can't we just replace the stock recovery with the Clockwork one and bypass the having to reinstall the packages twice. Maybe an sh init_hijack or something like that. I have been trying to find where the stock recovery "lives" to no avail. If you know where it is, then I can work on this and post the results.
Seems reasonable that if we replace the stock files with the CWR files and hijack the rocvery at boot it should work to boot right into CWR directly.

Well with MiUi and CM it goes directly into clockwork mod recovery. I guess that's the stock recovery on MiUi and CM.
For me, only on 2.1 and 2.2 roms did I have to apply cwm recovery.zip twice.

I have not used either for this phone but have with other phones and I think that it is b/c they reworked the services and framework.jars into an expanded power menu. I will see it that hack works on this one, so it will be easier on 2.1 and 2.2 for "relative" noobs. I have done it once for another phone and then my computer crashed (not issue related). I'll let you know what I find out this weekend b/c it'll take some time to get the pathways correct.
I appreciate you quick replies and have taken the first part of the advice and tried to backup everything (Which I thought I did using CWM). Just to be safe I have now installed Root Explorer and will back up everything this evening. Can't do more right now. Need to get back to work. Wayne
That did it. I now have my new ROM installed and a back-up of my efs file (which I mistakenly thought was included in my Nandroid back-up). BTW my nandroid, back-up produced by CWM doesn't include a boot image (or at least there is no image called "boot"). I thought there should be a boot image. In any case, I'm finally over the problem I've been trying for days to overcome. Thanks sooooo much. Wayne

CWM Recovery Touch + Installing ROMs

Hi,
I finally unlocked the BL on my Atrix (4.5.91 from AT&T)
I downloaded ROM Manager and installed CWM Recovery. I managed to boot into recovery from ROM Manager once but now it's not working.
I get the Motorola Logo and then it switches to the android logo with an exclamation mark
I was thinking of flashing the touch recovery, found information here:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-clockworkmod-recovery-touch-on-motorola-atrix-4g-how-to/
Is there a newer version? Are these instructions accurate? Do I need to be in fastboot to do this?
Also, I never flashed a ROM before
I really need a clear NOOB guide for doing this and would appreciate recommendations for ROM (if possible, ones that have Hebrew)
Thanks!!!
before you start digging an even bigger hole... STOP
you've already installed cwm so I don't know why you would need to install another version? Right now you need to get your phone up and running again.
Try these steps... power up phone holding the volume down button to get into recovery. Did that work? If so you should see the recovery menu - select data/facory reset and press power to select and then try and reboot system... does that work?
If not I think you'll need to flash the sbf file using rsd lite. Instructions are easy to find on here. Good luck.
I think I didn't explain myself properly.
The phone works 100%, I simply cannot boot into CWM recovery
when I power up holding the volume down button I get to what I think is the phone's default recovery. I get Fastboot as the first option and I can browse through with the volume down button
Anyways, what I would like to learn how to do is safely flash CWM Recover Touch (just because it's easier to use) and Flash ROMs
Thanks!!
Insure that rom manager is up to date, then reflash cwm recovery & try booting into recovery again.

OK, I re-flashed CWM recovery and it's working now
Before I proceed, I would like to backup my current AT&T ROM.
1) do I do this through th Backup and Restore in the recovery?
2) is this called NANDROID backup?
3) is it safe to restore from it?
I created a backup and again it does not boot into recovery. same issue
Will I always need to reflash it after each time?
OK, it only boots into recovery once after I flash it. Even if I don't do anything
ROM Manager is the most recent version (5.0.0.7)
Recovery is the most recent version according to ROM Manager (5.0.2.0)
Anyone? please help

Flash the recovery through ROM Manager one more time, boot to recovery, and flash the latest version from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475444
See if that one stays working.

Issue with recovery freezing

Recently decided to try and switch over to CM10, and have been having an issue with recovery. Both of the latest CWM and TWRP recoveries freeze for me after booting into them. The only recovery that works for me is the one that is flashed with the old app by Indirect but that flashes a really old CWM recovery. The recoveries that I have tried flashing are the ones linked to in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877217 thread. Both http://celticstorage.co.uk/cm10/CWM_v6.0.1.5_emmc.zip and http://celticstorage.co.uk/cm10/TWRP_v2.3.1.1_emmc.zip are doing it. I have a 16GB that ive kept (rooted) stock forever.
What happens is i go to boot to recovery, go through cyanoboot to recovery, and then CWM freezes up and blackscreens after I try to wipe something or install a zip, TWRP just locks up immediately and gives me a black screen. Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.
Use this thread to install CWM, I'm not a fan of TWRP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25786947 I used this and had no problems updating

This has been happening to me occasionally. I have found that when I get the black screen, pressing the Power button launches Recovery (CWM in my case). See if that works for you.
I now have the exact same problem. I've always ran off emmc. It says cwm 6.0.1.5 is installed. When I try to either wipe, or install zip-from-sd, cwm freezes then goes to the black screen. I cannot install any zips, so right now the tablet has nothing installed only a freezing cwm recovery it seems. I can use the power button to get out of the black screen and into cwm thru cyanoboot all day, but get nothing but these same steps reoccurring. Freeze, then black sod. I'm ready to try anything but cannot flash anything.
To the rescue
Ok, I have posted this on a different day. Try this with a blank sd card. Look at the bottom post called "Here is a video"
It a external boot cwm v.5 but you can copy this into your sd then flash and you have cwm v6.0.1.5 internal. Either way you have two ways to do recovery (external and internal):victory:

Well, I think I need to clarify more. Maybe somebody can help if I give more info. I've had cm7 running perfect, then decided to install cm10. I first flashed a cwm 6.0.1.5 zip to emmc. I did a factory reset via this recovery thinking my next move would be to flash the cm10 zip I'd put on the sd. No joy. This is where I'm at now.
In recovery it freezes and reboots to the "2 androids" screen with a sod. I hold power for 20 sec.s to turn off, then turn back on and get to cyanoboot fine. There, if it's allowed to just boot it freezes at the 2 androids. If I hold "n" to get the menu and recovery (6.0.1.5) it looks normal, will boot to recovery OK until anything is selected like the cm10 zip. It freezes before any selections can be finalized, and boots to that sod screen.
I know nothing of ubuntu! Sorta scared to go there with my limited knowledge. But will read up if it's required. Is it possible that this new recovery image don't play with what is currently on the sd? Is there anything I can put there that it may recognize in order to get a flash? Man, I'm lost!
Look pass the fear and go one step at a time, before you know it, your there.
It looks like you have already resolved this from this thread.
Ok, basically I'll go step by step.
1. Download ubuntu iso from ubuntu website (you can donate or put 0$ then download iso) and burn it to cd. 5 minutes
2. Stick the cd into a system that you don't plan to look at the video that is showing you the process and boot it up from a reboot and not from within windows. Select the left square which basically load the ubunbu from cd but does not install anything to your hard drive.3 minutes
3. You can view the whole video but I would skip to the section in video (3:28 watch to 4:43, 6:56 watch to 8:06 ) where I mentioned the setting the two flags in your sd after quick format fat32 and extracting the four files into your sd within ms windows platform from the post . I did this with a normal mini sd card adapter and not the usb stick adapter he used in the video. Since you are doing this to a blank mini sd then there really nothing to worry about since it is blank in the first place. 2 minute
4. If you had your apps backup with titanium backup then it still will be on the main mini sd and not the one that working with for this recovery.
5. I notice you did not mention wipe dalvik cache from your post. You should always wipe dalvik then wipe factory then do a single flash to test boot up.. You can flash gapps after a successful boot up into jellybean. (here's a video showing that I'm using external cwm v.5 even though its recommended to use v.6 .) You can always use cwm v.6 on your next cm10 test rom or use cwm v.6 to reflash to same rom once a successful boot up have been obtained with external cwm v.5. This purpose is to get it running on your nt.
6. Be patient for the first boot. Should not be more than 5 minutes max. It will look black then load. If it boot loops then wipe dalvik then wipe factory and do a single flash to test boot up again.
This will at least get cm 10 flavored rom on to your nt.

Got it back! Thank you for your help & patience. Also for the timely responses. I now have a bootable "recovery sd card" for curing these type problems. I've labeled it & filed away for any future borks of this kind! And I have cm10 up & running stable.
Thank you!
