[Q] new samsung 10.1 tab now what? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok guys just got hold of samsung tab 10.1 for around £286 mint so now im wondering what are the first things to do to it to improve it so to speak and dont say sell it for an ipad 2

Root, Overclock and flash a custom ROM. Enjoy.

Buy HD widgets from the android market cause they got some really sweet widgets... Go to the samsung galaxy tab 10.1 section and go under Themes and apps to find the screenshot thread to give you an idea on cool layouts for your tab.... Well that's what I did, lol
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on the Xda premium app

If your into games check out the post on some of the many games that have been tested on the 10.1. I would also check out the custom roms after yiu root, just be aware of your battery, especially if you overclock. There are some instructions on how to get your battey back if it happens just search the forum.
There are a number of themes out there, I would stay away from the live wallpaper if you expect everything to just snap at the homescreen. Also check out the Amazon app market, free paid app per day and every once in a while they release a good one like folder organizer.
I would say other then that enjoy, and find out how the tab helps you when your away from the computer.

What do you mean by being aware of the battery? In what sense? The battery life? I thought overclocking didn't cut the battery life if the voltage is kept the same?
For the OP, other than that was mentioned, before even settling on a ROM, I would just search and get a ton of apps and try it out. Then I reformat and install the ones I really like. Idk, for me installing all those apps makes a huge mess and slows things down so I like to just download everything i want to try and then install from a clean start. Try various browsers, etc.
ADW Launcher is good. Various remote desktop stuff. Also enable Hulu (I dont know if you need root but there's a thread here somewhere) if you want and also get Netflix.

[Q] calkulins Rom

i just noticed that the "My Apps" button in the market now looks like a phone and says "sprint"
If i click on it it doesn't take me to my apps.
Anyone else having this problem?
That's normal for this build. If you click on your Menu, you'll find My Apps there.
Thanks you were right

I'm really enjoying this ROM. The speed of the machine is phenomenal.
Love the Rom ad well but can't seem to get the market updated or to show all apps. Any thoughts?
I've tried market enabled to no avail.
Issue with ROM or with G-Tab?
I've noticed that if I let the g-tab go to sleep, I'm having to reboot it get it to wake up.
Is anyone else having this issue? I've had my tablet since x-mas, but have nto used it much. It sat in a desk drawer for about 2 months, and I'm just now getting into using it.

I have this issue with every rom ive tried on my gtab. So now I pretty much just install clem's kernel everytime. Plus it gives me CIFS so I can stream media from my windows pc .

Yeah, again it's just the build. There are a ton of hacks that will get you more of the market, but I doubt you'll ever get "everything". Considering that the GTab wasn't blessed by Google, we're lucky to have the devs here to get the market at all.

Another issue with this ROM. Some have fixed it by going to Clemsyn's kernel, others to Pershoot's and still others by using CPU Master Free. Personally, I just set my tab's Screen Timeout to Never. What can I say...I like simple.

I agree. The only problems I see with it are no news and weather widget like on tnt, and the horrible photo album (I think it's from stock?)
Fireware
This may be a stupid question, so I am sorry if it is, but Calkulins v1.1 says it is "Based on rooted 2.2 / FRF91 - TnT 3991"...
so can you run it on the 1.1-3588 firmware, or will that brick?
Again, sorry for my ignorance...
Thanks!
ROM's and Firmware are the same thing. If you're asking whether you can use ClockworkMod or standard recovery, the answer is yes. Calkulin's ROM is a hybrid using the newer 3991 build for features but the older bootloader and recovery. It shouldn't cause you any trouble loading it over 3588.
Thanks! Sorry, I confused the firmware with bootloader, thanks for straightening that out!
No problem. Just want to make sure that I understand the question correctly. Happy modding!
All Done!
Woot!! I will say, I bought this on the woot! deal... and although I consider myself very computer savvy, I have never rooted/hijacked/whatever a device before...
Happily this was super easy! I wanted use the stock ROM for a bit to get familiar with it, but I just couldn't stand how slow/unresponsive/just crappy it was!!
So I jumped the gun and started in... luckily I did a lot of reading first!!
Loaded up Clockworkmod - and made a backup first!! lol
Used clockworkmod to install Calkulins ROM---OMG is it fast!!
The found that I was having the sleep-death issue... so I loaded up Clemsyns Kernel Too!!
Not a single hiccup! Even for a noob- this is super easy! Just follow all the great advice on the XDA forums (and don't skip steps!) and you can't screw it up.
Thanks to all the great people on here, for the hard work, and patience... I love seen good communities like this!
DeadEnd
Which version of Clemsyns is recommended?
Hi,
clakulins ROM is my prefered ROM so far
But, it needs some issues to be addressed to make it my daily driver.
1- sleep-to-death
I know we can use another kernel to fix this (so I keep this fix for later if everything else can work)
2- Settings/Family accounts/add member
This FC every single time. I definitly need this functionality. My Gtab being a family device....
3- Photos is horrible as previosuly pointed out in this thread. I want a centralized place for all my photos, or at least for local storage + picasa. With this gallery, we can only access picasa public albums. What about my own account !!!
4- Photos started to display pictures roatated one quarter to the left. It doesnt let me re-rotate them back to original. It does that for evey single picture, i cant fix this. Photos is now unusable
I tried a few Photos gallery apps from the market (6-7 so far). None of them works to my liking.
I just want somethings simple that get access to all my pics.
5- Cant play videos anymore. Not even the sample 'car' and 'king kong' that came with the Gtab.
If I can fix all of the above, calkulin will be my only and permanent ROM.
(ps items 4 and 5 were previously working ok in this ROM, this started yesterday)
Also, another things that is on my whish list:
- Have bluetooth HID
I have this blutooth keyboard collecting dust on the used parts shelve that I would like to use with the Gtab
thank you calkulin for all,
So, I decided to install clemsyn kernel to fix this sleep-death problem.
No problem installing, everything went well.
But now instead of comlaining that it cant play videos, it just FC on every videos I try to play.
I feel a complete reinstall will be necessary.

[Q] BEST of the BEST!!!

Hello,
i rooted my phone not too long ago and i love it!!!! i tried BAMF 3.0 and i didnt like it much at all, it was choppy but i got it to be smooth with changing the cpu, well as of now i am just rooted and my question is: what apps do u recommend(rooted) ? i got rom manager already ^^ and also, what is some roms outs their that u like? and why? im looking for a new ROM but dont know where to continue xD
and also, is there an app that hides all my apps on my screens? ive searched but no luck, kind of like in which on a computer we can view, or not view desktop icons
As far as apps; Titanium Backup will let you back up apps and data, RootExporer will let you access files you couldn't otherwise (be careful with both, you can delete or uninstall things you shouldn't), wifi tether will let you tether over wifi I recommend version 2.0.7 (google it), those are the biggies anyways. Check my sig for my ROM recommendation, links included. This setup has offered bulletproof stability for me and the best battery life I've seen. Of course phones and opinion vary so try a few and see what you like. As far as that last part, I have no idea.
Are you talking about temporarily hiding the widgets and icons, per permanently?
If temporarily, why not just set up a blank screen? Stock sense came with several desktops with a widget, or two. All you'd have to is remove some not by long pressing on them.
Robert
[]QUOTE=fdp55;15629866]...is there an app that hides all my apps on my screens?[/B] ive searched but no luck, kind of like in which on a computer we can view, or not view desktop icons[/QUOTE]
Ty both of u, definitely will check ur info!
And I don't want to delete them permanently, just not visible, I've searched and I can't find any at all, and yea deleting is always good, I've just always like hiding icons on my computer, and i'd like to also on my tb xD
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
if you mean hiding apps in the app drawer, I think you'll need a different launcher like LauncherPro or ADW. I don't know that there's any way to hide apps in the drawer of the sense launcher
OP, Das Bamf 3.0 is a great rom, but I don't like it either!
I have tried 6 roms on the TB and finally found the right one for me, which given your description sounds like it might be perfect for you as well.
Liquid Thunderbread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160637)
This is a VERY stripped down and fast rom. Also it is AOSP instead of Sense based and is only 66 mb!
It is awesomely fast and smooth without any of the BS, I seriously cannot recommend it enough. I like it so much that I made my first rom based donation to the developer and plan on doing so again if they continue updating.
Let me know what you think if you decide to give it a shot.
Im on synergy and i love it. its speedy quick but still lets you keep a lot of the fancy stuff. also the battery is great on 4g or 3g, wifi is a little lacking. and an app you should definitively download is setcpu ( i think its free if youve signed up for xda here) itll let you overclock or set up underlcoking for when your screen is off etc.
on my older incredible, i had an ad-block app (got it from the app market). it blocked the banner ads that are in a lot of the apps.

[Q] How to Uninstall the TouchWiz update for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ?

On August 5, 2011 Samsung put out the update for the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 for the TouchWiz update. I really thought it would make the tablet better but instead I absolutely hate it. It made the very clean black interface into a grey child looking operating system. Although the system seems to run a little better now I just really hate the grey look to it. I loved how the bar at the bottom would go away when I wanted to watch a movie on it. Now I am stuck with it up all the time. Not to mention all the extra apps it loaded on that I don't want. Plus all of the weird bold fonts that are used on it now.
I have called Samsung support but they insist I am now stuck with it. I asked them if a factory reset would work and they said no......really? But I HATE it!
I have read some forums saying I could root my tablet back to the stock Honeycomb but if I do that can I reverse the root and get updates from samsung again? If and when they ever clean up this stupid TouchWiz. Granted some people might like it but I am really hating it.
Please I am begging the Experts out there for answers.
im looking for the same thing, it did make the system feel a bit smoother and fater, but I hate how the UI looks now
root, install CWM, download and install the 3.1 OTA update from here.

I have another complaint against the TouchWiz update. Now ES File Explorer will not show a usb drive when I plug it into my tablet. I have to use the stupid My Files app that comes with the TouchWiz update

My bottom bar fades off when i watch a video. I then see lil white dots for the points you can access the notifications, quick apps, and navigation buttons.
I hardly notice it. But then I am able to watch what I am watching and ignore whatever else.

Yes, after you said that I have noticed if I use the android media player it will fade out. But if I use an app like rock player it no longer fades out like it used to =(
(the android media player still won't play most files so I have to use rock player or spend the time reformatting them.)
Totally agree. Some functional improvements, but the UI looks dumbed down and ugly.
I like the task manager, but probably won't use the other quick launch apps, and they can't be changed. Also, the screenshot button doesn't belong on the screen at all times.

Hated the Touchwiz update.... calendar didn't sync properly anymore and I found the ui to now feel like a toy, big text and all... I hated it enough that i fully reverted to 3.1 stock... unless a decent community supported rom comes out, I'll probably sell the tablet and switch to a different one.
Thanks everyone on this thread for pointing me in the right direction to revert.

I feel exactly the same way, and am a bit concerned to see all the custom ROMs adopting the TW update.
The TW Email app looks like Pagasus mail did in the late 90's.
I ended up reverting back to 3.1 but kind of miss the Videos application, nothing else.
Can you point me to the post that showed you how to remove the update?
Not impressed with the update at all. When the source is released for hc and\or ics this tablet will rock.
I'm going to be removing the update as well today and am going back to 3.1 stock. I can't stand the childish look of the system now and mine is dog slow. Typing is extremely painful as well due to the horrible lag.
I don't know. My Tab seems much slower after the update. I am going revert to stock and see what that feels like again.

[Q] How to keep an app from sleeping after pressing home button?

Happy New Year (sick of hearing that yet?)
so I would love to find a way or an app that can stop my app(s) from going to sleep when I hit the home button to move on to another app.
As long as the app is on my screen, it is constantly connected 3g of wifi and is in a constant state of updating. BUT, when it is in the "background" (while I use another app or make a call) it just goes to sleep and stops all functionality. In many cases, when I come back to it I have to wait for it to load again because the app has been killed.
I dont know why anyone would want to leave an app open just to have it go into a frozen state! If you wanted the app to just be useless, why not just close it to free up ram?
Aaaaaargggg

Hey thanks!
that's just the way Android is factory-configured to handle apps : the most resources go to the tier-1 apps, those that are visible.
Just bulletproof the app you want to keep alive. I can't look up the link right now (doing two things at once), but it's pretty easy to find : look into the general Android forums for the "V6 supercharger" thread, it's pretty nifty and allows you to reconfigure the way Android handles free memory. And its "sister thread" explains how to give the highest priority to the apps you need ("bulletproof" them, in other words)

Thanks I'll look for it now. I have stock unrooted 2.3.6, does that change anything, because i wont be rooting or roming ;-)
Ahh the phone would have to be altered to use that. I wont say anymore so as not to be hated on lol. Many thanks
Oops, yep, sorry, my bad.. Of course the phone would have to be rooted to do this, you need a working Busybox installed..
I'm not aware of any app which can do this on an unrooted ROM (or even on a rooted one), sorry 'bout that..
Update: there's "Mr nice guy" available from the market, for rooted users only of course.
works pretty well, I got myself the paid version, comes in handy when testing a new Rom and you don't want to setup all the bulletproofing scripts back on..

[Q] Galaxy Tab 10.1 WIFI - Best Root/ROM?

I'm trying to read up and figure out what the best root/rom is for the Galaxy Tab. I'm not new to rooting -- I've got an Evo 4G and a Nook Color both rooted and running custom ROMs.
Really, honestly - I like the Honeycomb in the Tab 10.1, except the Touchwiz launcher. That thing bugs the crap out of me - *it never goes away*. Watch a video in fullscreen? Sure, fullscreen except the launch bar. OH hey, I'll take out the icons, but I'll still be here.
I'm sure I'd probably like ICS at some point, when it's more stable -- but for now, I'd be content with a custom ROM that is honeycomb-like, close to stock - but where I can ditch the touchwiz garbage. Is stable, isn't flaky, or filled with a ****-ton of skulls and retarded sound notifications made by a 13 year old death-head.
So - any suggestions?
edit: as a side note, I want things to work like AllShare, Netflix, Youtube, etc. I've used different DLNA apps in the past, and frankly I think Allshare is the smoothest of the bunch. Sucks that we don't have Hulu+ for the tab, but I can do without that.
