Running latest CM7 with JT latest V4 Kernel. While using the Bedside Mode App the bottom lights are constantly on and really light up the room. The bedside mode has a section to turn them off by using an app called LED's Hack, however that doesn't work.
Anybody have any idea how to turn off the bottom led lights when using the phone as a bedside clock?
I'm running the glitch kernel v.12 end I don't know if those issue with bln are still kernel related but i use the clock app that came with cm7 and they turn off for me..although I would try just turning the screen off and back on again...fixes it for me in the rare occurrence of them staying on

Mine stay on all the time when screen is on. Tried the clock app, same results. Which version of V12 are you running, low, medium,or high? May give that a try if can't find a way to manually turn them off.
I have been running medium for the last few days but I get a freeze once in a while that requires a reboot generally heavy camera use so I just installed high leakage today...so far smooth and stable, but your phone will differ depending on what leakage works for you...generally high will work for a broader range people but generates more heat and is not as efficient when compared to low leakage but it all depends in what your phone can take. Either way the stock clock app doesn't light up the buttons for more than a few seconds and if you hold the little dimmer button in the top right corner of the clock app, it totally blackens the background instead of just dimming it.

Hey all... I had v10.6 and the pulse notification worked as it should... it pulsed. Now after flashing v11 directly over v10.6 even with the pulse option selected, the softkey lights stay lit now. I've unchecked/rechecked this option but not sure what to do.
Anybody else have this issue or know a solution?
I remember this happening to me where I'd get a message and it won't pulse but stay lit on previous versions of ICS Passion. When it happens to me I usually turn off the pulse notification, reboot, turn it on, and test.
No luck with that but thanks for the suggestion!

Same here: I saw it pulsing exactly once. After the next upgrade it was gone back to just turning on the lights. It seems common to most ROMS that support the feature. Too bad :-(
Maybe it has something to do with deep sleep/power management and the fact that the CPU would need to wake up every second and turn the light on and off.
I would say try the Streamline Kernel. That is the only one I had the actual pulse notification work for on ICS Passion.

Now that you mention it, I was on v10.6 + Eugene's kernel when it did work.

Mine never pulsed, even when it was on 10.6.
Never saw it pulsing too, just aways on on notifications.
We don't have full control of it, right? Like different pulses for e-mail and sms notifications, or control over individual leds, like blink home for e-mail, back for sms, menu for calls, etc... I know that they are independent leds, as I saw only some on one time (when the phone crashed), so, it could be done that way.
Yes, that streamline kernel totally forgot. I had pulsing when I had that kernel on and when I flashed to v11 w/o streamline it is solid.
Apparently streamline is currently only available for/compatible with v10.6.

I have a question about the proximity sensor on the galaxy s2, mine is lit all of the time even when I press the power button to shut the screen off. Is this normal? I am running SHOStock 1.9.2 and Slyah 2.6.12 I have reflashed a couple of times and cleared the cache.
One more thing I think I found a possible bug in the flashlight toggle, if you rotate the screen with the flashlight on the toggle shuts off but the light stays on so you have to press the toggle twice to turn the light off.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I'm running SHOStock 1.9.2 and have neither of these problems. I even intentionally tried to get the flashlight toggle to break, but it work regardless of the orientation.
I'm not sure how long the sensor has been lit since it is so dim you can only see it in a dark room but I'm pretty sure it wasn't on the stock rom and maybe the first SHOStock rom I loaded which I believe was 1.9.0. The flashlight toggle issue has been there on all three SHOStock roms I have loaded.

I can't speak for the previous SHOStock versions as my first was v1.9.2.
I was coming from UCKH7 Stock (w/ Slyah 2.6.12 kernel). I did a full wipe and flashed v1.92.
I've only been running it for 3 days now, but overall i'm pleased. I did notice the following (not really issues, but a little annoying).
1. I had a random reboot within the first 24 hours of flashing.
2. I don't really care for the Auto Brightness changes (Lowered Auto Brightness a little and added 2 levels that make the changes less abrupt). I use Auto Brightness exclusively and it seems to low and a little choppy when changing.
3. I've gotten stuck in screen capture mode (home + power) twice. I know the screen capture is a feature, but I've got it to stick where I only need to press the power key (not the home + power combo). I'm not sure if this is a feature or a bug, or maybe I'm just a noob.

You are not the only person having an issue with screen cap, tho I do believe it is due to the kernel you're running and not the Rom. A quick search should pull up a bunch of info for you

My phone stopped rotating so I flashed back to 1.9.1 (only version I had on my phone at the time). The orientation problem was fixed and I also noticed the proximity sesor was no longer lit. I flashed 1.9.2 and the sensor is lit again, reverted the kernel back to 2.6.11 with no change then flashed the 1.9.1 ROM and the sensor is still lit. I have no idea what caused it to go out the first time I reverted back to 1.9.1 or how to proceed. Does it really make any difference whether it is lit or not? I would think it would impact the battery life so any thought or ideas would be appreciated.

Da_G's kernel and DAGr8's ROM supports BLN (back light notification) which uses your capacitive lights as a notification light.
What zer0ninesaid above plus there is NoLED, which I prefer over BLN. It uses icons to idicate what is notifying you so you don't need to invoke a pavlovian response to a blinking button, lol. Plus it has some additional tools like Proximity Sensor so the screen won't turn on when in your pocket.
Somewhat related, I just stumbled onto this notification app, iphone notifications, from the market and it was just the ticket. One of the problems with Google talk, Gmail is that there is no pop-up to notify you which is what this app does. Now my wife, an iphone-convert, can't complain about not getting the text pop-ups she's used to.
BTW, this could be a stretch but I couldn't get BLN to work together with Iphone Notifications.
What if you stay stock? Is there anything out there?

As kimocal said, NoLED is awesome. I have used it for over a year on my Vibrant (same screen technology). It pops a moving icon up on your screen when it is turned off, you hit the power button again to turn it back off completely, otherwise the appropriate (email, gmail, txt, and other) icons move around on the screen. You can set individual app icons and their color. Worth checking out. Used very little juice since black is displayed as off on our screen, only the small portion with the colored icon is actually on.
Just tried the NoLED, but think I'll stick with Missed Message Flasher.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I just can't see how NoLED doesn't decimate battery life. The device is on, running, screen is on (I'm sure OLED doesn't use zero power when on, regardless of pixels shown), etc. I assume it's only on when there's an un-acknowledged notification, but even at that...
Even just running the proximity sensor all the time is a drain. I dunno, I'd assume it wouldn't be popular if it killed your battery, perhaps I should give it another try..
Since the OTA I can't get my screen to dim enough. Does screen filter save battery.

Try this app called LUX. It allows you to customise brightness.
The paid version allows dim below "0%".
You can set it to something like -40% in a dark room, and normal brightness when you're outside. Basically, it's like auto brightness which you can customise. This is so you don't have to on/off a screen filter app.
And yes lower brightness saves battery.

i just tried this app and it killed my battery faster than using screen dim because this program is constantly running on the background. what settings are you using on it?
Sent from my A100 using xda premium
I'm an author of a program named Custom Auto Brightness, currently it's not under-dimming automatically but it'll be added soon.
Meanwhile, could I ask some of you to test it? I'll provide apk if anyone agrees. The problem seems that PoverVR GPUs seem to have problems with screen shading like in Screen Filter and the like, I'd like to check if I were able to circumvent the problem or not.

Having something run in the background doesn't mean it's using a significant amount of phone's battery. The amount of battery saved from low brightness is much much more than the battery used for Lux to compute brightness level. Of course I did not test it, but it is common sense: as the display uses most of the battery. You can check your battery use in settings.
Lower brightness, longer battery. Lux doesn't even appear in battery use. My screebl app, which constantly uses CPU to check for orientation uses only 3% in battery use.
Download ES task manager to see what's running on startup, and look at what you do not use, it'll probably shock you.
As for my settings in Lux, I set it to dynamic and so far my linked samples are:
Lux ----- Brightness
2 --------- -40%
25 -------- -25%
550 ------- 20%
20000 -----100%
Been using these settings for a couple of weeks, and no problems. I have also added picture viewers, camera apps, and video players to ignore/compatible list.
Another tip to save battery which most already know: use setcpu to underclock your phone when screen is off to 300max/300min, or 600max/300min if you use your phone for music. Needs root though.
well i noticed after i wake up in the morning the battery has gone down so much more after i started using lux. i disabled it and everything was better. it probably used about 10% more battery in 6 hours.

I use the brightness control from widgetsoid. I leave it set at 10% and my battery still hase 40% or more charge after all day and evening, even though I read on the train for about 1 1/2 hours and do moderate email ---huge difference from auto brightness setting. Tap the widget to go to auto brightness when outdoors (although, frankly, I go days without using it outdoors so this works great for me).
Hi guys!
I just bought LG L5 II. It's still UNrooted, so I need a brightness control that doesn't require ROOT privileges. The reason is quite simple - the minimum brightness is too bright, when you're NOT outdoors (if you're outdoors, you better set the brightness on 40-60%). I'm posting here because it doesn't matter If I have Motorola or LG - the principle is the same - display is too bright.
I've installed Screen Filter. In this topic some of you lot are chatting about Lux app - is it better than Screen Filter? What's your opinion? Obviously I want to save some battery and to use my display at night or indoors (without causing pain to my feelings and emotions ).
I will test Screen Filter for couple of days and see what's what. Hope some of you have tested it already and give me some tips. Cheers!
PS: Sorry for reviving this old thread mods, found it on Google, dunno if there is a newer one 'bout the same problem.
I think Lux and other screen brightness modification apps use a transparent layer over the main ui and we actually darken and brighten that layer running over the Ui instead of setting a further down limit to the screen LCD power value. This might be the reason that using Lux or any other screen dimmer app consumes more battery~ the screen LCD uses same power and in addition an extra app is running in the background continuously . It is only the transparent layer that darkens to save your eyes in dark atmospheres~ LCD power consumption remains the same.
^^ This right here is what I've been wondering for some time, because I suspect that at least some of those apps work that way, and is also likely imho what the OP was really asking. Yes, everyone knows the display is by far the largest drain on battery, and so lowering the brightness helps with that, so the question is does the app in question actually do that or does it simply provide a customizable overlay, as the poster above me speculates. Because if an app is doing the latter, not only will it not conserve battery it will actually drain it more, to a point, because the actual brightness is still the same (even if you don't "see" it) and the app itself is running all the time. Granted its consumption may be very low, but the point is that scenario certainly wouldn't SAVE any battery. And my guess is that within this group of apps that are the focus of this thread, some are simply overlays and some (the very technical ones) are the real deal, and it's a question of knowing which to pick. What I'd really love is for someone who is very technical in this area to see this thread and provide some definitive info.

This is partially right. If you have an LCD, you are just dimming your screen, not saving battery in the process. If you are using a LED screen, the app's will save battery since LED pixels can be individually lit. Using black or battery saving backgrounds will also help your battery life on LED screens. This is one of the reasons why LED screens are much more preferred than LCD.
I would like to wake from screen timeout without using any type of mechanical button (Power or Volume Buttons). I was ideally hoping the proximity sensor with the proper app would work but all the apps I have tried (MANY) have not worked properly on the Atrix 4G (cover proximity sensor screen OFF else ON, maybe with delay option before turning OFF) I would be happy If I could touch anywhere on the screen to wake the screen. My Atrix 4G is running factory 2.3.4 and is rooted and my wife's Atrix 4G phone is running 2.3.6 and has not yet been rooted. Seems like a rock solid working app to perform this functionality should be available for the Atrix 4G/MB860 smartphones?
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Don't want to wear out the fingerprint/power button!!!
Regards, Ron
PS-- I would gladly pay a nominal price for a working app (better than wearing out the mechnical switches)
that is not posible

It is possible, but it means it would have to keep the phone in a state of semi-awakedness at all times, never letting it go into deep sleep, thus draining the battery pretty quickly. Also monitoring the sensor constantly, thus draining even more battery. It also means the sensor would emit the faint red light all the time, which many find annoying.
Battery drain will be your best friend.

Thanks for the replies!!
I am aware the phone could NOT be in "deep sleep power save mode" and work without using either the power or possibly the volume button. A couple of Google Play "Pay Only" apps indicate they can be configured to wake the display using the side volume button (this would at least preclude the use of the power button to wake the display). I assume the volume button would still adjust the audio level? If anyone can comment on how well these apps work on the Atrix 4g, that would save me from purchasing an app that doesn't work as desired. From my understanding, the display uses the lions share of the battery bugdet. There are also apps that claim the display can be turned on by shaking/flipping or using the proximity/light sensors (anyone get any of these apps to work on the Atrix 4G?). The phones battery life should be extended by simply turning off the display. Waking the phone by something other that the power button would just be ONE of my usage models. If I want to get the maximum battery life, I would wake the phone using the power switch and not use any after market apps.
Thanks Again Very Much for your forum posts and any further help would be greatly appreciated.

widgetlocker lets you wake the phone by volume buttons, by disabling the stock lockscreen and replacing its own locker. it doesnt effect the sleep mode but disabling lockscreen may cause problems like unwanted call accepting. widgetlocker can put its locker over the callscreen but it still wont display the calling number. you may first try the app and then decide to buy it

Possibility to wakeup with a shake is solely depends on the kernel implementation.
