No mobile data except for browser - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
no app can use my mobile data connection, except browser. I once installed droidwall to do exactly this. But when i purge the rules/turn off the firewall, other apps still cant connect.
I even re-flashed the ROMs and didnt touch the iptables.
What can i do about this?
(Running CM7 RC14 on Motorola Milestone (Same issue with FroyoMod))

[Q] Can't access Market, YouTube, GMail etc.

I am now off from my university for the winter break. In my university, I use a manual proxy for WiFi to connect to the internet. I can access any websites and download stuffs through my Internet browser;but when I click default internet requiring apps in my SGA like Android Market, YouTube, GMail, etc. it's not getting connected and gives me "no connection" error. When I use my mobile 3G network ,everything works fine.
At home, I don't use a proxy and everything works fine too. I was using Gingerbread 2.3.4 stock ROM. Now I have flashed CM 7.1 and everything works fine at home like before. However, I am going to my university in 48 hours and I just wanted to ask you guys that why am I not able to access Market,GMail,YouTube etc. in my university through manual proxy?
No one?
My friend with Samsung Galaxy Y is also facing the problem with the manual proxy connection. But people with SpiceMobile, Sony Ericsson, etc. seems to have got no problems.

[Q] Some webpages do not complete without wifi

I am in Chile with a Galaxy SII on Entel. I just upgraded to ICS here and seem to be having a problem with getting certain web pages to load properly and a couple of apps that use web services to get data if I am connected using the cell service on 3g for example. If I am connected to wifi then everything works fine. This occurs when using the built in browser. If I use Opera web pages loads correctly.
I first noticed this problem a few days ago after I had loaded Proxydroid in preparation for my trip to another country so that I may use another carrier which limited data use to browsing only, no other types of webapps. It seemed to be the problem as I was also not getting ads blocked by adfree. I uninstalled it and all seemed fine. But now it has started again.
Yes my phone is rooted using the ICS CWM script method mentioned on these forums.
Any ideas?

Internet connection sharing problem. [solved]

When I try to share my mobile data connection to laptop, my laptop can't access internet.
No matter if I use USB or Wifi connection.
Everything seems to be ok, as far as settings are conserned.
Computer recognises and connects ok to the wifi hotspot or usb connection, but can't access internet.
I've tried stock rooted/unrooted and foxhound roms without luck.
Old SGS2 can share net without a problem in sight on every custom rom I've tried. I really need my "lifeline" to work with this phone.
Suggestions anyone?
[ My operator tele-finland sent 2 settings files: internet and wap. Problem was, that the WAP settongs went as default APN... ]
Edit: I've tried Foxfi app with no luck. Seems like there is a signifigant problem with my phone settings conserning mobile data, sice foxfi couldn't verify my internet connection and facebook doesn't automatically update status and youtube app can't load a single video to display...
try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

Nice app, though it has trial quota and USB tethering only.
But one slight problem... still no internet connection.
Is the only way to (totally) reset mobile data operator settings by making factory reset/full wipe?:crying:

I used to have the exact same problem. However mine got fixed by editing the APN. Try clearing out the 'authentication type' and 'apn type' fields.
Thank you circuit89! My operator had sent me two setrings, internet and wap... Guess which one was chosen as default
Solution was to change default APN to internet from that obsolete WAP

[Q] WiFi proxy on 3rd party apps ?

I use a wifi connection that has proxy enabled.
Browser, play store, even the xda app work on the wifi.
However, apps like Viber and whatsapp only seem to work on my data connection. not on the wifi.
I guess this is because they arent using the proxy. The same apps work on a windows phone.
Is there any way to apply a system wide proxy or proxy even for specific apps?
My HTC One S, running ICS, is just 2 days old and i do not want to root.
Ideas ?

[Q] Android Firewall not working.

EDIT: for anyone searching the forum for this problem, it seems either on KitKat or just the Moto G, I'm not sure which if you use a firewall "apps running as root" must be given data permissions or else data will not initialize. Giving this data uses about 300kb a month, so no problem with it eating any data.
I have scoured the internet for an answer to my problem and couldn't find one, so here it is.
I am on PagePlus, on the $12 plan, so only 10Mb of data, I use it, on my old phone Droid X2 I rooted and installed droidwall, then I could use mms, and opera mini pretty much as much as I wanted on that 10Mb  !
I converted a Boost mobile Moto G over to Page Plus, it went great, but on this phone android firewalls, like droidwall and others, don't work quite right.
The 3G doesn't seem to quite "initialize"?
My normal procedure to use opera mini is to open settings, now a quick setting on the moto g, toggle data, go to opera mini, and browse away.
Now it acquires 3G instantly, not 1X or anything, but opera mini says it doesn't have page failed to load.
Now if I go to droidwall, toggle the firewall off, go back to opera mini, look up a page, go back to droid wall and toggle firewall back on I can keep browsing even after it is back on, for that session (3G session, not Opera mini session I think, but am not sure). This uses only about 100 kb of data, and I can do this if I have to, but it will add up and end up using up quite a bit.
I can provide droidwall logs and whatnot if I have to.
Also tried giving kernel and lunux data, no go.
Thanks,
Anybodysguess
Are you running KitKat?

I thought that development had stopped on droidwall a while back. I was using it on my previous phone running Anroid 2.3, but I switched to AFWall+ when I got my Moto G. The firewall is so tightly tied to Android, that it makes sense to be using a firewall that is being actively developed. As the Android version changes, the firewall developer needs to adjust the firewall.
That said, when I switched to AFWall+, I was on version 1.2.7 and it was working fine. When I tried updating to 1.3 versions, I had problems with it not blocking things. So I have reverted to 1.2.7 and sticking with it until I see evidence that the problem is fixed. Development seems to have slowed on it, so I'm not holding my breath. I had a Titanium backup that I went back to. I don't know how you would go about getting an earlier version. The play store has 1.3.1.1 in it now.

Yes it did, it worked perfectly on my X2 so I never changed, but just after posting this I switched to AFWall+, as you were describing the current version seems not to work right, usually once I switch 3g off and back on data stops working til reboot.
If version 1.2.7 works and you could send me your titanium backup copy I would be very grateful, as I can't experiment around very much with only 10MB of data!
And yes @xips I am running 4.4.2 kitkat, the stock vzw version, froze some bloat with titanium but that is it, I did not delete any vzw crap apps yet.

On Android 4.2.2. the "apps running as root" network connection seems to be related to the mobile carrier's DNS servers. I used AFWall+ firewall logs to monitor that traffic and (at least on my phone) it was all attempted UDP traffic to DNS. My data seems to work fine though even with it disabled.
