Ok so not that this is a surprise to anybody but in South Florida we are without LTE and are limited to 3G and WiFi and while WiFi works perfectly fine, 3G is beyond horrible... I'm pulling in max speeds of 30kbps, which almost makes me want to get sick lol... So my question is, to solve this problem is the only fix flashing a different radio..?? I hope not because I'm on the new OTA (thanks Sprint salesman) and from what I have read the new OTA is not ready to be S-OFF'd yet meaning I can't flash a new radio even if I wanted to... I've changed LTE/CDMA to just CDMA in settings, I've updated PRL and Profile, I've tried diff ROM's and they all have the same output, ****ty 3G service...So anyways, I searched for a similar thread but nobody specifically asked this question, thanks..
Unless others you know with Sprint are getting better speeds it's all on their network. They do advertise a minimum of 600kb/s though so if you call and complain enough they'll credit your account for it.
And if you have the OTA update then you would have the new radios already.

SFLA speeds have always sucked for me on Sprint. Didn't much matter what phone I used. I am in Miami every week usually in the airport area. If I get 100k down I am outside doing jumping jacks.

Try to change your settings to CDMA only for system settings, reboot the phone and see what happens.
Dont change to CDMA ONLY then do a profile / prl update. Other forums are reporting that when they do a profile update its reverting the device back to CDMA/LTE..
For me staying on CDMA only is helping my data speeds.

Thanks for the tip, lemme try it out..
Hey everyone! So I've had this phone for about a month now and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Since I've gotten the phone, I haven't seen LTE pop up once (apparently CT has no LTE yet...) but this weekend I was visiting some friends in Manhattan. I know some parts of Manhattan have LTE. for example my friend has an iPhone (same carrier obviously) and he had LTE while I did not.. I made sure my network setting was on cdma/gsm/lte auto and I even went as far as typing in *#*#4636#*#* to check the radio settings. I did get the LTE symbol for like 10 secs but after that it disappeared and I lost service.. Another note to make is that I'm not on the stock apn setting because I changed it to epc.tmobile.com to boost my hspa+ speeds.
That's why. Lte uses fast.T-Mobile.com apn from what I'm aware of.

Hmm.. that's weird, because i switched back to the stock one which is fast.t-mobile.com apn and it still wasn't working while my friends iPhone still showed that there was LTE. Maybe I should create another new fast.t-mobile.com but keep the same settings as the current one i use for hspa+?
As the above posters mentioned make sure you have the fast.t-mobile.com apn.
BUT be sure you spell it right. LOL i made the mistake of spelling fast with fats and it took me 2 days to catch my typo. It would show the signal strength of LTE but not actually connect to it.

Haha that's so funny! One more question even though I wasn't on fast.t-mobile.com and was on epc.t-mobile.com i still wasn't able to see the LTE icon, any clue why? Thanks!
The only thing i can think of is that HTC / Samsung seem to have lower DB reporting of the actual signal strength compared to Apple.
Ive been in a discussion on other threads about how the signal indicator on my Note 2 and HTC One always seem to show low signal when LTE is connected.
Another person chimed in stating that they compared their HTC One to an iPhone 5 and noticed the signal indicator on the One shows 1-2 bars and the iPhone 5 showed full bars LTE.. Same T-Mobile Network phones side by side.
My rebuttal was simple. I downloaded an app that showed on both my Note 2 and HTC One a higher decibel reading then what my phone software was showing.
What leads me to believe this is with 1 bar i can still get 20+ megs down and 15+ megs up. Normally in low signal speeds would degrade.
I was also with Sprint on the GS3 and EVO LTE and the EVO LTE suffered from the same problems early on. They sent out several firmware and radio updates that corrected false and low signal readings and right before i left Sprint my EVO LTE outperformed the GS3 When / IF i could find LTE in Dallas on Sprint.
Give it some time. Im hoping they put more towers online and that devices get radio and firmware updates to perform better with the LTE that TMO is using.
I don't think the APN matters. I use the different APN for faster HSPA and I can still get LTE. I'll show you when I get home or in an area with LTE. LoL!! Also, in that very thread it was stated that changing the APN won't affect your LTE.
perhaps BUT if you misspell the apn then it wont be effective at all.
APN:fats.t-mobile.com you wont get an actual connection to LTE because its supposed to be fast. not fats.
This also happens if its the ONLY apn. If you have multiple APN it will revert back to another that works..
but this only happened to me so who knows..

I have two APNs. one uses epc and one uses fast. LTE works on both. If it switches over automatically, it leaves no trace in the Access Points menu; it is always right where I left it when I check later.

It could be the radio firmware. HTC continues to update the radio with most releases fixing bugs..you should report this bug to HTC dev. Because I have the same issue NEVER get above 1 or 2 bars on LTE T mo

Anyone here running CyanogenMod by any chance?
I just got the HTC One and flashed away Sense the very first day. Despite living in Chicago, the phone's signal has been pretty shotty and even dropped to 0 in areas where T mobile claims to have "4 bars". My girlfriend complains about hearing static in the background despite the signal being clear on my end. After speaking with T mobile customer service today, I was told it could be the phone or the whole rooting thing...not sure whats going on and I only have three more days to return/replace the phone. Anyone here experienced anything like this?

When it comes to service recognition by the radio and software of the phone, the apn doesn't matter. Think about the apn settings as joining a proxy server; if you notice you are just placing IP, web server addresses and port information in that settings page, and you must be already member of the network (have connection) for these settings to be relevant.
That is why if the apn settings are wrong you will still have service but not receive data.
The issue with one phone displaying LTE right next to another which is not (same provider) comes about how the software for the radio is configured and how well calibrated is the antenna of the phone and the radio processor... And a few other environmental factors too.

First time posting on here so please don't tear me a new ass if I'm doing something wrong lol.
I just got a Galaxy Note I (SGH-I717) on AT&T.
Initially I was having problems with reception and 4G and not getting LTE at all. I finally got LTE working my setting up the PTA APN and by dialing *#2263# and selecting a different preferred band (I chose "LTE ALL" in the LTE sub-menu and saved it). I put the SIM back in, powered the phone back up and LTE was working. However my signal bars haven't gone past one bar while on LTE. I get data, and can even send and receive MMS/SMS, but cannot send/receive calls.
Someone please tell me if I did something wrong or am leaving out any vital info.

Perhaps the radio should be updated. The latest official ATT radio is UCMD3.
Check if you have it under settings/about/phone status/baseband. It works on all builds but is the newest radio which improves signal sometimes.

I'm pretty positive that my APN settings are correct (I'll post them in a minute), I think it is probably the band preference I selected in the *#2263# menu. I do know for a fact that the SGH-I717 runs on the lowest LTE band.

Those appear to be as follows in the link I posted. The only difference i saw was BEARER: LTE (default is unspecified) play with this one.. that was different in the post.
Other then that, I know ATT and Tmobile only use LTE Band 4 in the USA anyways.
So LTE ALL under the service menu wouldnt help. Was your coverage always that bad?
Please someone with ATT help this poor soul out. I'm at wits end. Usually this would be something to bug your service provider about. Myabe they can refresh something on your account, or give you a newer SIM card at your local store.

Yes, unfortunately service has always been this bad. I have called AT&T several times/been to the AT&T store and talked to a representative and they have done the following:
- Checked/rechecked my IMEI number (it always matches)
- Checked and rechecked my SIM number (before AND after I received a new SIM card
- Unregistered/Re-registered my phone with the towers
- Called a tech out to the tower to make sure nothing is going on the them (I know its not, my buddies all have LTE running fine on their devices)
Thank you so much, scariola. You've been a helped all you can.
RESOLVED
I believe I have fixed the problem.
I dialed *#2263# to get to the Band Selection screen. I already had selected "LTE ALL" under the LTE Preference menu. I unselected it, chose Back and then End (both under the softkey menu). I then re-dialed *#2263# to get back into the Band Selection menu except this time I selected "Automatic" and chose End in the softkey menu. Re-inserted SIM, and rebooted.
No I get signal 3-5 bars, 4G and 4G LTE where strong signal is available.
I thought LTE was only data and could not be used for calls.

Right. The data is the 3g/4g connection and the symbol next to the bars is the data speed. The bars is the strength of the gsm/phone signal.
It actually sounds like the OP was involved in a tower maintenance scenario and probably didn't matter what he did.
You can do the same settings changing from the mobile data settings menu.
You can't do the same settings from the mobile data settings menu. There you can only mess with data bands. You can turn LTE off or on on my Canadian ROM but you can't use it as the only band. And I didn't think you could even change this on ATT ROMs/radios at all. I believe he used LTE as the one and only bands for phone and data which caused his issue. I have achieved this same result by messing with those band setting found by *#2263#.
However the ability to send/receive texts but no calls does not make sense. That could have been tower issues since they both use the same phone band.

Er, what?
Is that a JB thing because I know it wasn't present on the ATT ICS ROM. Also where is the LTE setting??
The default is "fastest available". If you choose the high speed setting, it will connect to whatever is best.
I assumed JB stock because the OP said he just got the phone.

It's on the canadian version of JB in the settings/mobile network. Missing from att JB though.
You can however force LTE only through the service menu. Att and tmobile use band 4. Not sure about anyone else.
You must dial *#2263# into dialer and select LTE and choose the band your provider supports. That will force LTE only. Dial the same thing into dialer and select automatic* to go back to jumping through LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
I understand it is on the Canadian version as I am using it. The Canadian version also includes LTE. I know how this all works. I have a Rogers note. But my question was to ranger on where he pulled that screenshot from. I always had an LTE option both on ICS and JB. And it was my understanding that ATT left this feature out on all versions and their modem was locked.
Sent from my SGH-I717R using xda premium
You can't force LTE if its not available. Its best to leave it at auto and let the modem do Its job of connecting to the best signal.

It may have been, but soon after I *thought* I had fixed the problem, the same issue restarted. I believe it was an issue with the phone hardware itself, maybe the antenna. I don't know. I sold the phone and got an S3.

Not sure what they meant by that, there's no AT&T specific radio. You may want to wipe the phone clean and start over on it.

Yeah, they told you that it won't work on Metro PCS because the phone isn't listed as a compatible phone on the website (the HTC One is listed though). Of course ANY phone that is GSM and has 4G LTE will work on any GSM network with 4G LTE (as long as it uses the same frequency, and since Metro PCS is using AT&T's network, and the One X+ is an AT&T phone, it will work)
.
I already gone and purchased a MetroPCS sim card and when I receive it, I'll call the 888 number to activate service on their $60 plan (the three Metro PCS stores in my town haven't even opened yet). Fully unlimited 4G LTE speed on that plan. I'm tired of the 2.5GB limit that Straight Talk has.

Ok, I see the MCC and MNC aren't touched. The ones I was looking at through Google Search, the MNC was like 16 or 260. I was trying to create an APN with that change, and it wouldn't save an APN with the MNC at 16 or 260.

It definitely should work, if T-Mobile/MetroPCS has the 1700MHz band 4 for LTE active in your area.
T-Mobile uses 700MHz band 14 (starting '14Q4) and 1700MHz band 4 for LTE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_US#4G_LTE_upgrade
the One X+ uses 700MHz band 17, 1700/2100MHz band 4 for LTE http://www.phonearena.com/phones/HTC-One-X-LTE_id7376
Even if I can't get LTE working on this phone, I still have 3G (AKA HSPA+) that can get appreciable speeds, and I won't have data limits on the $60 plan like Straight Talk has. All you have to worry about is the 850 and 1900MHz bands for GSM and 1700MHz for UMTS (HSPA+)

Live chat just follows the script in front of them. They don't really know anything else besides that. You said you got 10/3 on this phone with MetroPCS, that's HSPA+ speeds (3G, or sometimes called 4G if its T-Mobile). Still pretty good, and I can handle that. I'll later on buy a Samsung phone from MetroPCS if I like Metro's service.
