[Q] going to another Rom from alien build - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

what is the best way to go from alien build #4 to go to the atrix 4.5.91 home base build?

Flash a CWM zip

and maybe do a nandroid backup so you can revert back later if you want (or if something screws up).

should I sbf back to stock 2.3.4 or just flash cwm.zip over the alien build I have?

Just use CWM. Backup, then do a data and cache wipe between roms. Apparently fastboot has a command for wiping that is more thorough, but I've never had problems just using CWM's wipe functions (I've tried every ROM available). All will be well if you just backup in between. Stay away from RSD and use fruitcakes instead if you want stock.
Good luck,

From here on out I would only use the CWM zips (fruitcakes) to revert that way you avoid the dreaded downgrade hard brick.

If u want to flash a new rom, don't forget to always thoroughly wipe old data. Use fastboot to wipe system, userdata, cache, webtop, preinstall, and boot. Then yer guaranteed not to run into any info being kept and messing with your new rom.

[Q] Can someone answer my 2 part question?

This is the first time I install a non-stock kernel(Overstock). Do I have to go back to the stock froyo kernel to flash other roms?
And I've never done any type of wiping before flashing but I'm thinking of doing it this time.
If I wipe the user data and DAVILK, does it erase things on your SD like pictures and videos or apps backed up by Titanium Backup?
You can flash any 2.2, or 2.2.1 rom without flashing a different kernel. If you want to flash a 2.1 rom, will need to flash a 2.1 kernel before you flash the rom. There really no need to wipe anything if your just flashing a kernel, but if you want, just wipe cache partition, and dalvik cache and you will be good. No need for a factory reset. Hope this helps.

I was getting ready to flash another rom so I will wipe data too.
My question has to do more with flashing a 2.2.1 rom(possibly Eugene's Ginger clone 3) from Bionix 1.3.1 with overstock. Is it ok to do it without reverting back to stock kernel?
Nice avatar btw
As long as its a 2.2 kernel you will be fine. It doesn't have to be a stock 2.2 kernel.

[Q] Help Phone Wont Boot Past AT&T Screen

Hi,
I just bought an AT&T SGS2. I began by rooting it, flashing cwm and trying to flash MIUI. But the phone would not boot up. So I downloaded ODIN one click back to stock and flashed that, but the phone still does not boot past the AT&T screen. I've tried flashing different roms from cwm none of which boot up.
Please point me in the right direction to get the phone to boot.
Thanks
Can you get into cwm? Id bet you didn't wipe before you flashed

+1 this.
boot into cwm>factory wipe data/factory>delete cache partition>delete dalvik cache> install zip from sdcard>pick your ROM...
Thanks guys wiping the all the caches did the trick. I didn't know it was a requirement for this phone. I came from a Captivate where is wasn't required to wipe everything.

He doesn't have CWM if he used the one-click back to stock, unless it failed and didn't flash a kernel. Stock kernel has 3e recovery.

Even on the Captivate, you had to wipe whenever flashing a new ROM. Returning to stock is, effectively, flashing a new ROM (the stock one).

Stuck at Boot

So I unlocked my phone using pudding to flash the 2.3.5 rom. Then I decided to rdslight back to stock(photon SUN-198_7). I don't know if I needed to flash stock recovery smg but I've tried that but my photon still won't boot past the boot screen. Any other methods?

Try wiping before flashing.
When wiping, make sure you wipe all the cache, davlik cache, and then do a factory reset. After doing all that, then flash the rom.
If that does not work, had you done a nandroid backup before flashing a rom? If so, try reverting to that.
The problem is that when I rds to sbf file photon SUN-198_7 its stuck in a bootloop.

The 2.3.5. Removes recovery. Install boot strap recovery, and use it to flash zip version of romracer cwm.

Are you seeing any messages on the screen when the phone boot loops? Can you RSD and fastboot? Are you getting any failed to boot messages?
I fixed it. Did a fastboot -w to wipe and then proceeded with unlock sbf. Thanks for the input tho.

want to try a different 2.2 rom

as i was searching the android dev section, i saw a 2.2 rom that caught my eye. its the Blue 2.2 Frankenstein-Fishmanmod Final. however im running Bionix 1.3.1 on a Bali kernel, can i just flash it over my rom? or i have to odin back to stock rom, then flash the new frankie-fishmanmod rom? i want to stay with 2.2's is i have given up on gb roms already.
You can just flash it. Odin to stock is cleaner

thanks man! however, i still want to retain my files and applications. what can i do aside from going back to stock? and still cleaning up the phone. is there any other way? TIA.
Use Titanium Backup to back up your files.
i already did the back-up. can i proceed to flashing?

yup! after you have backed up all your apps and what not. in CWM i suggest you make a backup there too just in case you have a bad flash or just to have as a back up.
after that just flash like you normally would and then reinstall titanium backup and restore your apps! have fun!
thanks a lot sir. downloading.... ^_^
what would be the things that i have to wipe? still the same as any other rom?
1. factory reset
2. wipe data/cache
3. flash the file
4. cache partition
5. wipe dalvic

also try to backup your text messages with any app from market if you still need your sms
You can back up your texts and APNs in Titanium too.

[Q] flashing ram, can't get past samsung boot screen

Hey All,
I had been having troubles with 4.0.3 multi-dpi, so I thought I'd flash Saurom. I flashed this, but upon reboot, I got stuck at the samsung screen. It never went past there, just sat there forever. So, I went back into cwm (holding down vol up/vol down/power), and wiped everything again, and tried to flash saurom again, but same thing happened.
I then tried to flash back to 4.0.3 multi-dpi, with same results. I can get into CWM just fine, but it seems any rom I flash hangs at the samsung boot screen.
Does anyone have any ideas? Right now I'm completely down :/
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Sebastian
Hi sounds like a bad kernel flash.i would go into cwm, do the usually wipes, go to mounts and storage. Format data. Format system. Format cache only. Pull battery. Install any of the odin install Roms through download mode, That should fix your problem. Then you can start over and flash whatever Rom you want

You should restore the latest good backup you created before you flashed whatever is giving you problems.

Just a reminder, when you go to mounts and storage, do not fformat sd storage, this will wipe everything in your memory of your phone

A backup restore should do the trick.

Worse comes to worse you can flash stock Odin. If you one clicked for ICS, remember to flash bootloader first

From my gathering, Saurom & ICS 4.0.3 DPI are incompatible. Meaning you can't flash one on top of the other without doing a full wipe data/factory reset. Having said that, I think the best move then would be to flash back to stock via ODIN, install cwm, redownload whatever ROM to your ex sd card, mount system & data then re-flash.

I "believe" all you need to flash through Odin is the GB bootloader, then you can flash GB roms, the ICS bootloader is what causes the hang up with ROM incompatibilities

Be sure the ROM has the radio load and remember a Nandroid does not flash the radio load. That has to be done manually.

I'm not very familiar with Saurom but from what I've read I think that's correct. ICS needs a clean slate to operate from is all I was saying.
