Hi guys, I hope you can tell me something.
I came from an Htc HD which obviously had Sense.
I was used to the fact that sms from contacts with multiple numbers were grouped by name.
So if John had more then one phone, and sent me messages from all his phones, they would all appear as John's messages (same thread).
Now I came to Android, I installed a number of different messaging apps, and none does the same.
Is it just me that needs such a feature?
Is it even possible on Android?
Go SMS Pro, Messaging, Handcent SMS, all show the exact same behaviour: a thread for each number!
So now my friend John has two or three threads, depending on which phone he has in his reach at the moment...
I can't believe I'm the only one that can't stand this...

Man... You think I'm stupid or you didn't read my post.
I HAVE single contacts with multiple numbers and still they appear as separate threads.

Same problem here
I'm on the HTC HD2 with a gingerbread rom, been bugged by the exact same problem for months. Seems all I can find are other people mentioning the problem, and no solution :/
Solution found?

I seriously hate the new contact list.
I am having an issue with it not sending my calls for certain contacts directly to voicemail (an option in the contacts settings). This ALWAYS worked perfectly in 1.6.
I think it has to do with the new stupid contact list having like 100 million different classifications.
When i restored my contacts they all became SyncML contacts. Maybe the phone has a bug that only allows that setting to work if its in your "phones contact" list.
When I create a new contact manually, this becomes a "phone contact" and not a SyncML contact. So now I have some contacts with a SycnML classification and some with a "phone contact" one. How do I make them all the same? Will the contacts all restore if I have to reset the phone?
Another issue is that all of my old phone contacts had no dashes in between the numbers, and when I create a new one there are dashes. It looks messy and unprofessional.
Edit, I figured this one out. Not adding a + before the number does this.
Who made this bull**** software? I am a pretty smart guy (I assume) and this contact list makes NO SENSE.
Help? LOL
bumpity bump
I don't think anyone wants to help because of how much you complain.

Hi All,
Before you say it, I know what I'm doing and understand how Google contacts work, I had a HTC HD2 (thanks Pongster and XDA!) and I am used to Android.
I know how Google contacts work, infact I submitted a bug fix to AweSync to fix up their syncing of Google Contacts with Lotus Notes.
Why does the Samsung Galaxy 1 (and 2!) show me _ALL CONTACTS_ when trying to SMS people? or when I try to save a newly dialled number into contacts, it shows all contacts?
I don't want to SMS an email address! I don't want to sift through 1,300 contacts yet this idiot phone is showing me them.

It's listing email Address's in the SMS TO: field - yet I've CLEARLY unticked "All contacts" and I've made it only show contacts with a phone number.
What is wrong with this thing?
EDIT: also, forgetting my ring tone every time I reboot isn't impressing me either.
Okay, I can't answer all your problems, and I do agree that the management of contacts on this phone is pretty poor, but there's obviously ways round certain issues.
One thing that will immediately help you is to use the contacts app to send SMS, rather than the SMS app. Select your contact (filtered as shown in your post) and you can swipe them left to SMS or right to call. That's a pretty handy feature.
However, if you're sending a message to more than 1 person you're back to square 1. I'd strongly recommend getting GO SMS Pro and GO Contacts (both free) from the Market. They're excellent replacements and I'm sure you'll be a LOT happier with them.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

It does what you describe above. I don't know what you expect it to do though. You dial a number, click "Add to contacts" or "New contact" to either list all your contacts or create a new one.
is there any solution to this, i quite like the messaging app, but find it quite annoying when i have to search through hundreds of contacts, or else exit out to the contact application to text some1 who's actually in my contacts list ....
Its not a deal breaker for me, i prefer the stock than go sms or handcent, or any alternative i've tried, so if there is no fix i'll grin and bear it but if there is please help out
.... its not that i prefer the stock to any other, its just that no other provides anything that makes me want to move from stock, and since both will be running anyways it seems pointless to be wasting battery .... also i found double contacts problems with other apps aswell

It's just poor design by Samsung.

Why? I think it is a good idea, since I very often MMS to email addresses! It is very handy to automatically downsize an image to MMS size when you are sending it to a person who you know will be looking at the email on their phone (e.g. my friend in Japan doesn't have MMS at all, over there nearly everything is email).
Been wondering about this too, i know the contact app you can customize what to show, which is fine, but the sms app show everyone you have been in contact with on google. Only "fix" i've found so far is to use another SMS app that can filter the contact list.
The solution is very simple. Just open display options in contacts and select only display contacts with numbers. Also untick everything that you don't want it to display. I don't save any numbers in phone or sim card so I save it to gmail account.
Even if I select only gmail it shows lots unnecessary contacts. So I went to gmail on my laptop and opened the contacts (phone book or something like that. Its been over a year so I don't remember)
I created a new category (u can choose an existing one) and transferred every single contact that I needed under it.
And thats it. Everytime I format my phone I just go to contact display settings on my phone and only choose the category that I made. And it only shows the contacts that I need.
It works also if u want to save a contact. I chose to save contacts to my gmail account when it asks. And everytime u save it saves it to the category that u choose.
I have been using this over a year and work flawlessly. I remember beig sick of choosing amongst 1000s of contacts.
I tried to explain as I could. If there is a problem ask me I will try to help.
Edit:
I realized this doesn't answer ur question about sms. This doesn't fix that SMS list behaviour.
First off as a new Android user (finally made the move from blackberry) i just want to say thanks to all who have posted in the past as it has been a lot of help in learning about this device.
I have 1 contact that when i sms it is sent to 2 other contacts on my list. When ever i recieve a sms from this contact the sender info lists the other 2 contacts.
As noted above this is my first android device (Samsung GS2 LTE Rogers) it would appear that it is more of an android question and not a device issue.
I have tried removing the contact and even without the person in my address book the sms is still sent to all 3 even though only one number was added. The sender info is changed to the 3 numbers.
Has anyone came across this issue? Any idea for a fix? Have done some googling but have not came across any similar experiences.
The phone is rooted just to freeze bloatware but has stock rom and Gingerbread 2.3.5. I was experiencing the issue prior to rooting so i doubt that is a cause.
I do not have any groups in my contact list.
Any info would be greatly apperciated.
Thanks in advance.
I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem or if a solution has been mentioned somewhere.
Basically when I receive a call, the contact name and information doesn't show up. Instead, it just displays the number. In the call logs, the names also don't show and I can only see numbers. I installed exdialer and everything shows as should be with names in the program, but the problem is when calls come in the display defaults to samsung's dialer so I still can't see who is calling.
I'm on a deodexed LF6 stock rom. Any help and / or suggestions greatly appreciated!

Which Contacts are displayed in the Contact list? Which contacts do are you choosing to display?? Do you have contacts on your SIM card??
I've chosen to display all contacts from all accounts. No contacts on sim but I've also checked to display that as well.

Double check you haven't doubled up on your contacts. I recently updated my uncles S2 to ICS, and he had this issue with only numbers being displayed. when i took a look further into it via the contacts menu, i found multiple entries for the one person. For some reason that was enough to confuse the phone and only display number only for calls and texts. Did you do a contact back up when switching to the custom rom, or anything contact related when switching? Even any kind of back up you made, when restoring, could have done this. But most times ive seen this issue, its due to have one too many of the same contact!
Have you tried choosing just one at a time??
thanks for both of your suggestions. It neither tips worked, so I deleted my google accounts and then reloaded and it worked.

That's why I never link any accounts with my Contacts. I only use contacts from the Phone itself.

I recently decided enough with Apple/the iphone and so far I am absolutely loving my S3 and android in general. My only major issue is group messaging within the stock messages app.
With the iPhone it would show me in a group text who messages are also sent to and allow me to reply to all within the group.
Is there a particular setting to allow this on the S3 messaging app? I really like the look/theme of the app and would love this functionality. I do realize there are 3rd party messaging apps out there but I wasn't sure if I was missing anything.
Thanks.
It's not possible with the stock sms app, or even the samsung sms app. You need a 3rd party app like GoSMS Pro, or Handcent. There is a setting in each which enables it.
What it does is it combines the MMS's for you when they come in....so at first they come in as "download"...after they download, they go into the correct thread.
Yes it is just add multiple recipients and then send.

Yea, but when the message comes back, it doesn't group the recipients back (if your recipient replied to all). Don't see a way to reply to all either...in the case that someone sends you a group text.

I see this as well. It's a shame since other phones already have the ability.

You can group people together. You can select a group(s) to have your message sent to. If your friends have only one phone number in your contacts it won't ask which one to use, and unfortunately it doesn't remember which ones you picked the next time you start a new conversation (it does remember in the thread). Unless they can reply to all, the responding messages show up as a new thread.
Perhaps you can do this with the ATT MyMsgs app, I don't know.

I heard that the ATT Messages app supports group texting, but you can't initiate a group text...very odd if its true.
