Enable new APN creation - Motorola Photon 4G

Per some other forums it appears that Sprint has restricted the creation of new APN's when a forum SIM is inserted. Has anyone had any success in getting around this restriction or are we stuck until some ROM tweaks are implemented?
Thanks,
mHuh

Well I'm on o2 UK and I created my APN

well I hope its possible cause my girl is going to spain and italy in two weeks. It was def the selling point to getting the photon.
Although I read, and I believe on their motorola forum that you can set and save the new apn. Got to check it out again.

Help me get my Rezound to work in Korea

So, I've successfully unlocked my phone from the bootloader, inserted a Korean SIM card (Olleh KT) and I works just fine for making and receiving calls and also getting text messages...... But I cannot get data to work nor send text messages, I'm not a cell phone guru so all of this is new to me. I have been following several different threads and have been trying to load a GSM ROM but have been unsuccessful, could someone please walk me through it? Will that be all that I need to get data to work? Any help is greatly appreciated!

How did you get the cellular portion to work? I took mine into a shop and they tried two different sim cards with no luck. When I boot into bootloader it shows the phone is unlocked at the top of the screen. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

People are using the hidden 4636 menu to change from LTE to GSM. However this is not enough for mms and data to work. That needs a ROM made for GSM.
You can get into the 4636 hidden menu using HZutils app.

I'd suggest CONROM
I have not personally used it.
as others said you to ask for the Korean APN information and then enter it into the phone for data and mms to work.

Was just about to search this very same question... Are you by chance at Osan?
I'm not rooted (yet), as I broke my old Rezound a week before I got on the plane to come here.
I went to the kiosk in the BX today and they said that I would have to call verizon to get my phone unlocked or check if I could use a global SIM card.
When I came home and called Verizon they said that I couldn't do it yet, and then an update would be released in 1-2 months that would unlock my SIM card to be used internationally. So with that time frame I am expecting my tour to be over before they release the update since it took 8 months to release ICS for the Rezound.
So has anyone ever successfully used their Rezound overseas? I don't see why I can send/receive texts while roaming but not if I used a local SIM.
may need to install the new radio

After calling Verizon, they said that there would be an OTA update for GSM some time in the next 2 months. Today I happened upon a few different articles saying the update was released on the 13th.
My phone won't allow me to check for the update while roaming. Is it possible to download the RUU from a 3rd party and open the file and run it without my phone being rooted?
Of course today I spent $50 on a local prepaid flip phone.

Rezound International on ICS Leak

So I put the latest .10 ICS leak on my phone yesterday because I can't wait for the OTA since i'm leaving soon. I downloaded the 4G on off app and am thinking I should be able to pop in any SIM card and it should work on GSM. Is the phone unlocked? Also I might need to use my normal Verizon SIM to use in Italy and Spain. The verizon reps said if I left it in it would work just fine. Is this true? I currently don't have any GSM cards to test with and I've been looking everywhere for the answer but no success. Help would be amazing.
Thanks in advance
For full GSM support I believe you need to install one of the custom roms with it added...

But I thought that was one part of the ICS update. So is the phone kinda locked like I can only use verizons rates? I want to try a SIM but I don't have one
With GB or the ICS leak you probably can get basic calling and texts with a GSM cell company sim card.
With the conrom ROM you should also get mms and data to work. Supposedly everything works.
Also, I suspect gsm antenna is not in the extended battery cover, so you should use the standard back cover that came with the phone.
I personally have not tried gsm in my rezound, so the above advise might be incorrect. this is just something I am interested in.
howard
p.s. T-Mobile sells a $1 sim card with 10 minutes of talk time, an internet deal. So you can buy this $1 simm to test with.
p.p.s. You will also need to go into the settings and add the apn settings for the cell company whose sim you are using. data and mms won't work without this.

Thank you so much. I just need calling and data and mms to work. I'm just going to google how to change the APN setting as you said. Thanks a lot for the help man. I have the ICS leak which is supposed to support global roaming straight from VZW.
Well, there is a thanks button you can click on.
I do not know much about Verizon's New global roaming, bit I suspect it will be expensive per minute. Using a local cell company's sim card probably will cost less for long visits overseas.
I wrote an app called HZUTILS which can also do the radio changes like the LTE on off app. My app is free, also does a few other functions, and if you click on an advertisement I earn a few cents.
The CONROM is available in the development forum. During installation one is asked GSM or LTE. no easy switching back and forth. I suggest you make a nandroid backup first with Ramon ra recovery or the touch recovery. Restoring the backup is a method for returning to LTE. Or one can reinstall the conrom and select LTE.
If you look through the development forum you will find other gsm ROMs. The CONROM does both LTE and GSM, was made from the latest .10 ICS leak, and sounds like it is very reliable.
p.s. let me know how this works for you.
Thank you but I don't wanna root my phone really.. I forgot something last time and almost bricked it. Well not really but it was scary. My only question is really can I just switch it from your app as it is now because I can or must I have a custom Rom for some type of reason?

I recall, a few months ago, reading a very long multiple page posting about people having various levels of success with stock GB and changing the radio setting using LTE on off app. People were successful with phone calls and texting, but had difficulties with mms and data.
People did strange things to get data working, and it only worked for some people. I think it involved driving the phone in a car to get somewhere with no cell signal, then back home? Not sure, as I don't recall it very well.
Then people started typing in the APN for their gsm provider. This evening, just for fun I tried typing in the APN for T-Mobile into .10 ICS leak rezound, and it would not get saved. No error message. Verizon appears to have locked out the capability to add a non Verizon APN. So, yes, I think a gsm ROM is needed.
BTW, there must be plenty of rezound owners using GSM who can more confidently give you more concrete advise. They can tell you what they tried, what worked, what didn't, and what is the best approach. I think the answer is a GSM ROM, or paying high roaming charges to Verizon.
Alright ill just try and get a sim off someone on at&t and see what happens. But thanks a lot man I hope I get an answer from someone doing it. You were a lot of help ill let you know how it goes!!

I just received the official Verizon ICS in the last hour. I am poking around looking for the global feature, since it is THE promised reason I bought the phone. Offhand, I do not see the global feature anywhere . Network mode still only shows' LTE/CDMA' or 'CDMA only' as the choices, so it seems that 'global' is still not official from Verizon in the ICS as just shipped.
The LTE ON/OFF app seems to have a few more options than when I last looked, but I've no idea what's may have changed.
I put in a tmobile SIM card and changed the settings in the app to GSM and wcdma and it worked calling and texting! It didn't have data but if you go to mobile network settings and access point names I feel like you could add the apn and be golden using data and mms over gsm. I'm Hoping this is the truth but I don't have anything to test it with

GSM switch gone in ICS OTA?
Looks like option to switch to GSM is gone. Dialing *#*#4636#*#* does nothing...
that option to show network modes when dailing *#*#4636#*#* is removed in latest RUUs and official OTA, but however you may flash any of ROMs available to get GSM

So SMS worked with the ICS OTA, both send and receive? Last time I tried 2 months ago under Gingerbread, GSM calls were fine, but could only receive SMS text, could not sent texts, and never got data to work.
I've spent over 1/2 of the last 3 months overseas, so this is a big deal to me. Even if just the calls and SMS send/receive work, I will be pleased. VZ told me the global feature is not in this latest Verizon ICS OTA, but maybe the inner workings are there and they just haven't put in the frontend and any VZ profitmaking carrier lockouts?
I am off to South Africa next Friday. Sounds like I will have to get an MTN sim in ZA and try again when I get there. Maybe this ICS OTA will have some value to me afterall. I'll try to remember to post back here, whether it works or not. If it all works, however, I'm pretty sure the posting will only be redundant info, since my screams of giddiness would be heard around the world... afterall, I've been using an old unlocked GSM RAZR flip phone when I travel.

taking your Verizon Note 2 overseas - tell me your experience!

I am traveling to Spain for 3 weeks in August and plan to bring my Note 2 with me. I would like to be able to use data and make phone calls while there without getting hit with Verizon's roaming charges. I know I need to buy a SIM card over there and possibly tweak the APN settings? I was hoping some of you fellow XDA'ers could relate their experiences with doing this. FYI I am running Beans B14.
Thanks,
micah
I'm interested in this as well. I'm going to Estonia at the end of this month.

Have you looked into Google Voice with Groove IP? If you have wifi signal over in Spain, you can make and receive calls from your Google voice number. It's like having wifi calling from T-Mobile.
I was interested in the same thing and that is the easiest solution I have come up with. I'd like to know if there are other solutions as well, without using wifi because wifi might not be available everywhere.

I'm traveling next month and it will be the first time with the Note2, however, I did this extensively with a previous phone. High level: You get a prepaid SIM for a wireless carrier of your choice. (Example - In France, I have an Orange SIM with minutes and data). Change this out when you land and replace your Verizon sim (put it somewhere safe). Then change your APN to the required settings for that carrier. I just searched on the internet to find the right settings. And that was that!
Hoping it is that easy with the Note2. :highfive:

I would love to hear your experience after you get back from your trip next month.
In Afghanistan right now with a local sim(roshan). It's works fine and I have Internet. Long as you're on a custom rom sim cards should just pop in and work. Far as Internet find apn settings and just add the apn. Haven't had any problems, also my Google voice is still linked to my Verizon number so I still get those voice mails and can still send text from my gv number
Except buying local sim cards overseas you can also buy one sim card with a wide coverage. F.ex MTXConnect data-only sim card covers more than 20 European countries. I use this one for travelling to Europe and I didn't have any problems with it.

Going to Italy..

hey guys just found out that I got orders to Italy, will my s4 work there? I'm assuming it will but what if any are my best options to use it oversees? thanks!

thank you
The phone is carrier unlocked so you suits be able to put in a SIM card from there abd bit have to pay Verizon's global charges.

Get a prepaid Sim here. http://www.ritesim.com/simcards/italy.html?___SID=U
I got one for Germany and worked great. Incomming calls where all free...
Don't pay Verizon costs...
It should work. According to what i've seen on this forum, you just pop in the european SIM card in order to get voice, and for data you go change your APN under your network settings (can only be done though once you have already put in your new european sim).
This way, you dont have to pay verizon's ridiculous $25/100mb charges

Using my LG G3 in London

I'm going to London in October for two weeks and was planning on buying a PAYG sim card to use once I was over there. Do I still need to call Verizon to have them "unlock" it like we did in the past or should I be good to go? The last time I went I had to sign up for their global plan @ .99 ¢ / min and the data was something horrendous like $25 for 50 megs.

No. Buy a local prepaid 3G SIM chip, insert chip in place of Verizon SIM, create the appropriate APN and set data type to global. Reboot. Your new SIM should be activated, might require you enter a pin. Don't expect much if any LTE speed.
My Lady Susan used her Verizon LG G2 this way in Scotland and several chip vendors failed to be able to set it up right for her because they forgot to restart after the APN and settings changes. Eventually one figured it out and the phone worked fine.
Though the VLG G3 is reportedly more band-limited than the G2 (?), not less as one might expect, it should still serve you quite well as a World Phone. It does not require any unlocking at all.
I ran VLG G3 yesterday on my T-Mobile and AIO pre-paid sims here in the States. Got Edge on Tmobile and H on AIO/cricket.

Fantastic thank you. I went on the Vodofone site and they give you all the APN info I'd need.
Hi trent999
There's not option to add new apn in the setting, could you please tell me how to do it?
thank you
From my experience you cannot add a new APN while there is a Verizon Sim card on the phone. What I did was remove the Sim card, power on the phone( without the card) and then this will enable the option to add a new APN in Settings/mobile networks/access point names. From there click on the three dot overflow menu and select "add new APN".
At least that's how I remember I did it.
Let me know if it works.
It worked pretty good. We went to a 3three store and was able to buy a PAYG card for about $25 US. The tricky part was finding the right APN values to put in. Different websites sometimes had a little different info. But after fiddling a bit I got it to work.
My fiancée's AT&T iPhone 4s was a different matter. I thought all iPhones were GSM unlocked but nope. Couldn't use the one I bought her.

I am headed to Asia soon and was wondering the same thing about my phone... As far as the APN edits go can one just edit the Verizon APN or will need to follow the steps above and remove the SIM, reboot, to clear the Verizon APN altogether and then enter the new APN?
