Q buy sgs2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Couple of questions. Should i get the sgs2 from att or euro version?
Im going to buy the phone off contract...just wondering wich would be best for me.
Also which has nfc, if any. Thanks
Sent from my unbrickable cappy *bam*

a few reasons i went with the I9100 instead of ATT version:
Pros:
More dev support on I9100
faster android updates, no ATT blocking updates
physical home button
No ugly AT&T logo
more accessories
I9100 is factory unlocked and will hold its value better

Where does one buy a i9100 from? And what is a decent price. And do any come with a NFC chip?
Sent from my unbrickable cappy *bam*

I am waiting for the ATT version first off since IF I have a problem with it for the year warranty I can exchange it easily with ATT. Second it will have the NFC. Third from what leaks I have read it sounds to be basically the exact same (I hope) as the international version hardware wise (as compared to the Sprint version with a bigger screen and Tmonile version with bigger screen and different processor). I also lime the 4 soft buttons since I am used to it with my captivates. The captivate has always had a big Dev community so I don't think it will be much different. I am available for a upgrade already so it will save me several hundred dollars.
CONS- will be if it is too different that it takes too much to configure it for the 4 button hardware difference. 2: if ATT try's to get me off the grandfathered unlimited data plan. 3: if the community all leaves for the international version. IF ANY of the above I have an issue with then I will fork out the $600+ to get the SGS2 international version. So right now it is a waiting game until Sept. 18th I guess to know the cold hard facts.

Nothing about that article says the Galaxy Note is coming to AT&T.
In fact if you look at the model number, it's clear that the version that just went through FCC approval will never be sold by AT&T. Usable on AT&T - yes. Actually sold by AT&T - no.
AT&T phones have a model designator starting with SGH. SGH-I897 (Captivate), SGH-I997 (Infuse), SGH-I777 (AT&T GSII)
International generic units have a model designator starting with GT. The unit in that article is GT-I9220. So it's an international model that, while it will work on AT&T's network, will NEVER be sold by them in a contract-subsidized fashion. AT&T has NEVER sold a GT model on contract in the United states. If history is any indicator, if the Galaxy Note is ever sold by AT&T, it's going to be about a six month latency before the AT&T version drops. (See, for example, the delay between the GT-I9100 and the SGH-I777)

How would one obtain an international version for T-Mo then? Or is it a possibility that they will pick it up?
If it's like the I9100, an International variant supporting the T-Mobile bands won't exist. T-Mobile may or may not sell their own variant.
The heavy customization of the T-Mobile GS2 is a sign that you likely won't see the Note sold on contract with TMo or even any compatible with their 3G bands.
I'm happy with my Streak...even if it is still running 2.2.2, but, I'm looking at the Note also. If it gets to at&t before summer of 2012, I'll grab it.
Is it going to have a notifications led light?

It must suck being on a carrier that uses 3G bands that basically no one else in the world uses...

yah i was loving the streak too (esp with steve's excellent builds). but i sold that for the s2, and i really miss the big screen. for me, the sgs2 feels like a downgrade hahahaha. ill be getting the note when it comes out full price. might have to sell the s2 to help pay for it
Really want to lug around a 5.3 inch screen for a daily device? Your back pockets won't forgive you. 4.5 is the largest that is comfy I think...

+1........
I've carried the 5" streak in a velcro closing belt loop case for over a year w/o any problems. The Note, with the 5.3" screen has less top & bottom than the streak does, so it won't be all that different

TOO Big for my taste. and too small to be a "pad"... not sure where this falls in to .. I'll be keeping my SGS2... only thing I WOULD change to is the Prime
I think the Note would be great for me, especially at work where carring even a 7" pad would be restrictive. I would use the stylus to write my notes all day long at work.

I've had the streak in my pocket every day since December 26 2010. Not an issue at all, if it is then you haven't owned one or have a very small figure or wear skinny jeans. I can't wait for the Note to come out, it will be in my pockets daily as my personal phone, along with my Atrix work phone. And BTW, the Streak is more often in my front pocket than back.
I've had the S2 since Friday and I love it. However, I have had my eye on the Note since I heard about it last month. Looks like a lucky family member will be getting my S2 once the Note come out If I don't like the Note then I'll take my S2 back, I can because I'm indian.

Streak rises again....(fact or fiction?)

Searching for some ics info for the streak I came across this...is it real or fake????

As the date in that article states, this is rather old news:
The SPro is slated to launch in japan in janruary.
It will ship with 2.3.4 and should hopefully recieve ICS (depends on which company made the SPro, if it's quisda dont expect ICS quickly)
Unless dell states specifically what ver of android it will come with, this is just conjecture from other sites, 2.3.4 is a common version to build to for GB
2.3.3 is too old, 2.3.6/2.3.7 are too new; so it's either going to be 2.3.4 or 2.3.5. And i'm betting it's gonna be 2.3.4
It's 4.3" and is as closely related to the s5 as the venue, ie cousins.
Will it be like a second version or the streak...will it be worth it?
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium
As it's gonna be import only unless you live in japan I cant say, importing imparts a large cost on top of the normal price.
It's a pretty common looking phone, it's basically a sensation XE but from dell and with stage 2.0. It could also be considered a Venue 2/Venue S as it's more aligned with that then the S5
Like with the S10 I would likely recommend against importing unless you absolutely must have it as there are many comparable devices. The S10 competes in china because it's 30% cheaper then others while having the same featureset, outside china not at all.
I cant imagine being able to import a SPro anywhere near the price of a comparable 4.3" phone
Nonetheless i'd like one for myself to hack, same reason I bought a S10.
Not for me
Screen smaller than FIVE inch is a 99% deal breaker for me.
Once at&t gets its head out of its collective you know what as to knocking the Galaxy Note off data as a "tablet only" device, that is the way I'm probably moving after the 1st of the year. Rumors report a at&t branded note, but it will be missing the home button, and have a qualcomm processor for LTE, which won't be available in my area until probably 2015 or later LOL.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Note i717R or GT-N7000

Hello all,
I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Note i717R from someone and I got it unlocked to use with Bell Mobility.
I've rooted the phone and it feels that the phone lags sometimes. I don't even have much installed. In fact I had much more stuff installed on my previous SGS2! Even the batter life is poor than what I was getting on my S2. (4 hrs vs 2 hrs screen time). I'm not complaining about battery life. Just stating my results.
Anyways, my question is wether I should sell the i717R model and buy the International (N7000) model. I've heard/read stuff that the International version is better than the devices provided by AT&T, Bell, Rogers etc. Is it true? OR
am I better off staying with my i717R.
Selling the i717R isn't a problem, and neither is buying the N7000! I'm sure I will get it for the same price!
Please suggest...
Thanks!
I was wondering this question too as I went with the n7000. I have to say though that I don't regret it at all. This things flies and has a great dev community. The battery life is also amazing (4hrs on screen time in 16hr and I'm only at 33% ) I wonder what i717 users will say though

I wish I would of gotten the n7000. So much more development to choose from. Don't get me wrong I love this phone but I'm bored with it already. Then again I get bored with things after about a week and want the next latest and greatest out there lol.

Sell your i717 then
And to be honest, I feel the same way. For my SGS2, there were hundreds of ROMS to choose from. For i717, we barely have any. I tried a few, and I definitely would prefer to be on stock GB 2.3.6.
So I think most probably I'm gonna sell it today/tomm, and hopefully I can get a n7000 for almost the same price!
I'm starting to feel the same way Bout the i717, so many people bash the phone I feel like I made a bad choice, but besides what the others say I love my phone, the only other reason would be because the other has more roms
What's the major difference between the I717 and the N7000? Isn't the I717 supposed to be LTE, while the N7000 isn't?

Yes, that, and the n7000 has the exynos soc while the i717 has a Qualcomm soc. In my opinion, the soc's are a tossup, as my phone performs flawlessly, even though people rave about the exynos being better. The only real difference I see as a result of the different chipsets is that the n7000 has more ROMs. Which since we have a few really good ones, and a bunch of great devs, I have no complaints about.

Go Intl Note. Always better. Made a mistake of getting the AT&T Note. Had a Cappy and as far as mods that's what this Note is like, miss my SGS2. Anxiously awaiting the SGS3. Don't really care for LTE. Unlocked and Intl is the best if u wanna mod.

Decision Made!!
Alright guys its done!!
NOTE i717R SOLD for $610 + $25 for shipping on eBAY!
And this other guy is giving me a month used international version with a flip case for $550! I doubt I can get a brand new one for this price. He mentions there no signs of usage! So I think its a good deal!
I'll be n international note owner very soon!
So what is the feeling now. Which model is better? Why isn't the lte version better?
I regretted getting the i717 until I started playing with roms. I have CM9 on it now and its really fast and responsive! I love my note now.
Think about it... 1.5GHz dual core with 1GB RAM. Does it sound like that kind of hardware should have any difficulty running a little phone ? Lol. With each software update the phone gets better, I can't wait for jelly bean!
Having said that, the quad core n7000 has a bright future if app development becomes more heavily multithreaded.
The N7000 isn't quad-core, it's dual-core Exynos 1.4Ghz. I717 is dual-core Snapdragon 1.5Ghz. N700 has ARM Mali GPU while i717 has Adreno 220 GPU. Both have 1GB RAM. i717 is supposed to have better 4G LTE than n7000 hence why it's AT&T's model. The buttons are also different. While both are nice phones, I prefer the i717, especially for $250. With the kernel release and CM9 nightly it's super smooth.
N7000 better but i717 nicer looking
If anyone is still reading this thread. I went to all the trouble to get the i717 version because it looks better IMHO without the physical home button. I'm in the UK and initially had pretty bad mobile network connect until I flashed more recent modems, then it was ok. I can't confirm it supports EU GPRS data when there's no 3G but 3G speeds are comparable to my other phones. The i717 doesn't support 900MHz 3G/HSDPA which is a commonly used frequency in the EU, so far that hasn't caused me any issure, maybe I'm lucky and Three.co.uk support 2100MHz don't really know.
From what I read the chipset / processor on the N7000 is supposed to be better. I haven't had any performance issues with my i717 though, no complaints there. But the N7000 has a Yamaha sound card on the Exynos chip so you can play with 'Voodoo Louder' app to get a big boost to your audio volume, not able to get that on my i717. Also the stock AT&T software is a pain in the ass, esp' as it kept reporting an error connecting to AT&T, CM9 and Team Perfection soon got rid of that and perform very nicely. Also the N7000 has FM Radio while the i717 doesn't.
Not sure if it's just my phone buy my g/f says my voice is muffled an low volume on calls with my i717. Contacted Samsung who say I have to send it back to the USA for repair which I don't fancy doing.
In retrospect I should have just stomached the physical home button and got an N7000. Might eBay my i717.

Wow that's a lot of trouble just for some capacitive buttons! Shame you can't keep it.
So just to be clear, the international Samsung galaxy note is not a 4G LTE and the ATT samsung galaxy note is a 4G LTE phone.
I was going to buy the international verison but i need to be sure that the international verison is not 4G LTE.
The international version does not support LTE due to its processor. That's why north america has a different version.
Although the international note 2 will likely be out in October....

Dilemma of Buying Either Galaxy S2 or S3 (Don't own either yet)

Hey guys, I've been planning on upgrading my phone which is literally like 6 years old some lg slider type of phone for texting.
I was planning on getting the S2 (international since I'm in Canada) even after knowing the release of S3. One reason was to save money $0 for S2 and 150 for S3 on a 3 year contract. But the main reason was the hardware, I know the cpu is pretty on par with the international exynos quad core but the gpu seems to fall short right? Not to mention they took out the Wolfson sound chip which I was really anticipated on since I rather just use my phone as a multimedia player than buying for example a cowon mp3 player.
The thing thats really holding me back is I guess the gpu. I own an ipod touch and never in the world did I think would be playing games on such a small device but nevertheless, it kills time pretty quickly and keeps me from being bored throughout the day or at work.
I just wanted to know if anyone who has the American variant of the S3, are the current games graphically looking and fluidity decent enough even though it uses a Adreno 225? Is it worth getting the S3 with the Adreno 225 than the S2 with mali400? Just curious if the Adreno 225 performs better than the S2's mali400.
If not, I'll probably just stick to getting the S2 and maybe wait to import the international or just wait it out for the next "S4" or the next "big" thing aside from apple's iphone .
Thanks guys!

I'm thinking he meant on the s3 period vs the s2 Hercules. I speak garbled English well.
And I haven't played to many games but have tried Dead Trigger and Gta3. Both run super smooth. My friend played max Payne and Riptide GP and had zero issues. Though I watched him get stuck trying to answer a telephone on Mac Payne lol.

s3, no doubt. (finding a few small quirks though)
i have two s2 phones, we went to the s3, too many changes and good things to list. battery, screen, responsiveness, gps lock times, signal, ........ (lost 4g though giving up the s2, have it in my city)
Is it confirmed that the Wolfson sound chip isn't in the US variants of the S3? For some reason I thought it was still there. I asked supercurio of he was going to work on the At&t version, and he said he hadn't decided.

theres a bunch of threads out there backing up that the american variant doesn't have wolfson. Would have been beast if it did tho.
Thanks guys, think I'll go with the S3. Will miss the old candy rectangular shape phones tho lol.
Out of curiosity, why do people buy their phones outright? I mean even after buying it and getting the right to choose any kind of plan for the phone, won't it eventually end up to the normal price of $50. Since most texting plans are 20-30 and doesn't come with caller id/voice msg or even data and to get all those will be another 20-30. So it'll eventually end up to the normal $50 plans O_O
It's a shame that america has the worst mobile plans.. so expensive compared to other countries, especially korea or japan. Luckily they have free wifi literally anywhere you go so data isn't really necessary but their plans are actually good. I mean who the f*** made it so we have to pay for caller id, that shows up on our normal house phones without any extra charges lol..
thanks again

Looking to get a new phone...

I'm currently a proud owner of a Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V running Android 4.0.4 It's a great little phone- I'm guessing it is virtually indestrcutible- (I dropped it. ALOT. And spilled some water. Not even a hiccup!). It's a little phone that could and for something like this- it's amazing, but I feel it's time for an upgrade. As great as it is, let's face it. It's ancient. A 600MHz ARM V6 processor, 418MB of memory, and it's screen is only 3.2". It's opnly supposed to run Froyo. /FROYO/. That's pretty ancient. I'm looking for a new phone, but here's the catch- It has to be on a reasonably inexpensive pre-paid plan. (My parents don't want me to get a contract and I don't blame them, they can be expensive.) Virgin Mobile (My current carrier; 35 dollars a month with unlimited 3G) has only two "decent" phones- A 199.99 HTC One V. A SOLID phone but seriously, 512MB RAM and a SINGLE CORE 1GHz is really not a lot. On the other hand, they have the 300 dollar Evo V 3D with 4G, though it's not really something I want and it's a bit over my prace range- (Up to 250 USD).
While searching plans, I found T-Mobile's 30 dollar Monthly 4G plan. It's wonderful for me. I don't call much but I use lots of data and text alot. T-Mobile also has better coverage, and this is 4G. Not boring old 3G. (I don't mind 3G, but 4G is just better.) While thinking of decent phones I could manage to get GSM Unlocked, I thought Galaxy SII, Galaxy Nexus, and a few others. I looked all around Craigslist NYC, Amazon, Google, and Ebay for all phones and I found that on ebay the bids for a decent SII in decent condition could reasonably be bought for under $250 (T-Mobile/GSM). I'm wondering- Do I need the GSM or the T-Mobile variant, or will either work. Is this phone good and a value for the money? I really like the design and the specs on it. It also has lots of JB ROMs and Native ICS which is a HUGE plus.
Also, is there any difference between the SII with the Capacitive buttons and the one with a huge Home button? (P.S.: I like the one with all capacitive buttons more )

Edit! I was looking at the ebay link again and found a website called Wirefly where they are offering a SII 4G for 100 bucks if I make a new account. Does this count with a Prepaid account? And if so, is the SII 4G compatible with normal SII roms?

Your profile says you're in the US, so I'm assuming your talking about T-Mobile USA.
The Galaxy S II for T-Mobile is massively different than the "one with the huge home button", as you refer to it. They have completely different hardware, including SoC/CPU/GPU.
The "one with the huge home button" is the I9100, and this post is currently in the forum for that device.
The one for T-mobile USA that has the 4 capacitive buttons is the SGH-T989, and that device has its own forum.
There are also other variants for US carriers AT&T, Sprint, and US Cellular. The one for US Cellular doesn't have its own forum but is somewhat closely related hardware wise to the Sprint variant, so there are posts concerning it within that forum. But the AT&T, Sprint, and T-mobile USA variants are all different from each other, and they are all different from the I9100.

That's still the SGH-T989.
Uhuh.... I'm getting a bit confused. Should I simply repost this thread in the other forum?

Pretty sure they only have one.
If you have questions about the T-mobile version, you should post in the T-mobile forum. This device does work on T-mobile USA's network, but only gets Edge, as it doesn't fully work to get "4G" on that network.

Ah, I thought this would be the forum to post it in since i was considering either a GSM Unlocked one or TMobile.

You need to consider what network you're intending on running the device on before you get the device itself.
The i9100 gets high speed data on AT&T's network, but only gets Edge on T-mobile USA's network. There's nothing that can be done about this; the phone antenna hardware just doesn't receive one of the two necessary frequencies to make it happen.
I've heard rumors that the T-mobile variant can be modified to get high speed data on AT&T's network, but it doesn't work that way out of the box.
The LTE variant that AT&T sells (the Skyrocket) can reportedly be modified to get high speed data on T-mobile USA's network, but it doesn't work that way out of the box.
EDIT: BTW, the Skyrocket has its own separate forum from the AT&T variant as well.

As I said, the i9100 (which is the international device) will only get Edge speeds on T-mobile USA's network. As long as you know this going in...
Any questions pertaining to the device actually sold by T-mobile should go to the forum for that device.

BTW - the implication in your first post is that 4G is VERY important to you. You DO realize that this eliminates the I9100 as a possible choice for your device to use on T-mobile's network, right?

No, no, it's not VERY important to me, but it's a very nice plus.
Just get a brand new galaxy nexus from the play store. You won't be disappointed.

The link you posted, is for customers who create a new post paid (contract) account through us for T-Mobile. We do offer T-Mobile pre-paid phones and accounts, but the prices are usually different. I am happy to help you with any questions you have about Wirefly - I work at our HQ. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk plan specifics.

Its fine, really. I simply do not like any of the T-Mobile prepaid phones. Bad dev support/specs. I'd gladly get a postpaid but they're expensvce , contracts are a hassle, and my parents won't let me get a contract: prepaid only. I live 4 blocks from a TMobile phone, I can just buy the plan there.
Also, I think the S3 is out of my price range. Plus, the s2 is still a great phone and I kinda like the design more.
