Need help, S-Off before root? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got my replacement TB and I was in a rush this morning and tried to root and s-off before i had to leave. My old TB was rooted and running Synergy. I dunno what I was thinking and was getting confused when reading thru the revolutionary page and what not. I did the s-off successfully and then got stumped when on their page said it does NOT root device The first time I rooted I used the oneclick method but that took a while so that's y i tried the REVOked method. On the revolution FAQ page it gives a link to su and says to flash it in recovery, can I install and flash CW without SU or ROOT? I'm stuck like shyt and need help. Some one bring the technical X-lax.
Oh, so after words I tried using the oneclick method for just ROOT and figured I could skip the S-OFF step and i think that's where I got stuck
PLEASE HELP!

Run Rev again, the device should already be recognized. It will ask you if you want to DL clockwork mod recovery and flash it. Then download superuser 3.6.1(i believe) and then viola you has root!
Or just skip the SU and restore your old OS.

See what being in a hurry gets you. Why couldn't you just use the phone like normal for one day?

Go tothis thread download and follow the directions to flash clockworkmod recovery. One you do that flash the SU .zip and you have root.

Thanks man, worked like a charm.
To the second poster, I was asking for help not an obvious reply that not only wasted my time but your own also.

[Q] rooting htc eris hboot 1.49

hello
i apologize for making a thread about this but i've spent all day yesterday trying at least 10 methods of rooting, wiping my card, downloading this and that etc, etc
i haven't seen any method that isn't at least about two months old, however
so, i'm wondering if it's possible to root a hboot 1.49 eris
this method: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709450
is the only 1.49 targeted method i've been able to find and it's about three months old
have there been any progressions?
You tried one click? Try a forum search for jonsuh and one click.
i tried the version that was in the marketplace but it didn't work
i'll try using the apk from the site too
same exact app
is that the only known method?

I had absolutely no problems with 1 click from the market, and I have hboot 1.49. Where is the failure occuring, any errors?

this worked for me. the link for download seemed to be down at the moment
file is attached. use at your own risk. not my work, i just posted it until the developer's site is back up. one benefit is that you can just hit the unroot button to unroot your phone then the root button to root again.

When I reboot the phone, I get a warning screen for a long time (red ! in a triangle) and then the default recovery screen.

Are trying to go to recovery immediately after clicking rootme and then rebooting? If so I made that mistake, you have to reboot once all the way, and then reboot into recovery.
Two full reboots before going into anon-ra recovery.

My phone hates me, want to help?

Well, I have tried to flash my phone with cm7 for the last 3 days and when I go to reboot recovery it freezes at the LG screen and I am forced to pull my battery possibly bricking my phone. Does anyone, I mean anyone have a safe sure way to flash my phone? And I have no pc access.....srry

You need a computer. Either you didn't install recovery right. Or you're too impatient. Sometimes it hangs for a minute or so.

use terminal emulator and reflash your recovery with flash_image. you got a bad flash or a bad download of the recovery it sounds like.
there is a slim chance you aren't rooted correctly too, in which case it won't let you flash the recovery until you get permanent root. hopefully this isn't the case.
Pretty dumb question what's flash image n just incase how do I check. For a permanent root?

My advice is not to do ANYTHING until you are at a computer and have at least a half an hour available. This sounds like your first time flashing a ROM, take some time to look up key terms and such, your patience will reward you greatly. It is difficult to flash without a computer. Go to a friends house, a library, something and do it from there. To check if you have root, download the app root checker from the market. Then, after confirming root status, work from there and flash a new recovery by pushing it through ADB. Then, place the ROM on the sd card and flash it through your recovery, then Google Apps. If you follow everything I say, and it still doesn't work, come back to this thread or send me a PM and we will go from there. Look into guides before posting, not trying to be mean, but they are there for a reason.

Need help, possible brick

After flashing new moto update (the one from this forum, not the one that came over the air) using RSD Lite, it worked. Then I ran through the dock root method to root it, that seemed to work. And then I restarted the phone and get the red moto logo and it will not get past it. Should I reflash this update or do I need to flash something else like stock pudding? I will attempt to flash 1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_5-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US again and hope that fixes whatever got broke. Any other advice?
Did you try a battery pull and reboot?
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Oh yes. The photon battery pull is well documented. It fixes many problems but it's not fixing this one so a reflash of the update is happening now but I have a bad feeling that isn't it.
Okay. It did work. Acted like it wasn't going to but then started to work. Should I redo the dock root and assume I typoed (I'm pretty sure I did not) or should I do photon torpedo? I did dock root before the OTA several weeks ago and it worked fine then.
No you don't have to buy a new photon. Mine did the same thing but I flashed like 4 times before it took. If you can get it into rsd lite to flash something your not bricked. Take the battery out for 5 minutes, put it back in and try to flash it again. It should take and boot up. Also close rsd lite then reopen it.

Try the one click root method. Glad you got out straightened out.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Okay. The phone didn't temp brick last time because of the root method I chose, it was busybox related. I forgot that LCD Density Changer relied on Busybox to set the default system density. The option had already been set to save it as a system default. So whatever was done to install Busybox has to do it again. If someone isn't sure, they can always uninstall any root requiring programs that also use Busybox when going from root to unrooted to rooted.

Lost root

Ok, so I was installing the ubthrottle script and it didn't go as well as planned. I have lost root access. Superuser.apk is still there so if I try to reroot the phone it fails at the end because the apk still exsists. I can't get to the BSR so I can't restore any of my backups. Obviously I will probably have yo sbf and start over. The only bad thing about all of that is the only internet access I have is via my phone and don't have an sbf locally so when I download it, it takes a huge ammount of data. Anyways if there is another solution let me know

Strange. You are sure you can't access say /data w/ es file explorer?
Have you tried to put the bsr.apk on your sdcard and run it from there?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Yes...I tried everything that I could...nothing would work short of doing the sbf. That being said I did that rerooted and whatnot and back hapilly on cm7...I'm sure I did something wrong somewhere installing that script but for the life of me can't figure it out

At least you're back up and running.

Luckily, it sounds like you didn't lose anything, but that's why, whenever you're going to flash something, it's always good to nandroid first so you can get back to where you were before.

Understood but I couldn't even boot into BSR at all only thing I could boot to was Android Recovery. I completely lost all root access and could not flash any of the backups that I had made at all.

I guess what I was trying to say was, before you flashed the mod onto your phone, boot into BSR, nandroid backup and then flash it. I'm assuming you had to boot into BSR to flash the mod? Not familiar with the mod you were talking about.
Anyways, once you SBFed back and rooted, you would have been able to reinstall SBR and then nandroid recover your previous installation. That's what I meant.
Anyways, glad to see you're back up and running.
Sorry for the misunderstanding on my part...and it was the script that motcher had posted to ubthrottle it was handled with a scripter not the bsr

are u sure u had the correct busybox installed?
something u could try if that happens again is to see if u are able to update ur busybox version. I think I read somewhere that when root got "lost" people either updated the superuser binary from within superuser app or reinstalled busybox.
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
Just realized that I never answered your question...the only thing I had done was changed the version of busybox according to the and I'm sure I did something wrong there and that's why

Cwm when my phone boots?

Whenever my phone dies, it boots to recovery or better known, cwm when I plug it in. Not sure why, I don't mind it. But I'm wondering why, I have the latest touch recovery from cwm. And I do want to switch to 4ext but I have a question.
1. Can it flash any rom that cwm can flash?
Thanks guys.

4ext can flash every rom that CWM can and then some.
The reason your phone turns on like that is because you are using CWM Recovery.
But I've used it before. It didn't used to do this until I flashed touch or because ics. I updated and rooted so not sure.
Is 4ext really worth it?
Is it really worth putting the effort into it?
I need to flash a radio and it says 4ext recommended.

It doesn't require much effort and is well worth it yes.
CWM is garbage and it is a bug in the Touch version that does it.
Has nothing to do with rooting the phone.
You never had CWM before you rooted and non touch versions didn't have the bug.
It's actually about as painless as can be to switch to 4ext and is miles better in every way.
Yes you need to flash new radios for the ICS roms.
Read the Op in my thread like I said in the PM and you will find it is all very simple to do and well worth the short time it takes to do. Or not.
Your call, but you have been told many times to ditch CWM and I pretty much require it or TWRP for my roms which are currently the only recent ones you will even find for the Bolt.
Install the free app I linked you before and flash the recovery, takes maybe 3 minutes.
Thank you. Your the only one who told me if it was better. I'm switching now. And true, don't think any Better roms are going to come out.
