[RESOLVED?] Ad'hoc connectivity problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone,
I'll keep this short.
Stop mucking around with wpa_supplicant files. Download this program called Virtual Router:
http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/
It shares you existing wired internet connection the same way manually creating an ad'hoc network does, except when your android device tries to connect to the network it actually works.
Let me know if it works for you, because its worked for 4 different devices i know of so far without any tinkering;
SGS2 with modified wpa_supplicant file
SGS2 without modified wpa_supplicant file
SGS1 without modified wpa_supplicant file
ASUS Transformer tablet PC without modified wpa_supplicant file
Cheers

Do you know of anything available for OSX that does this?

I tried searching around for one but I cannot find one. Sorry
I'm not very familiar with Macs, but have you tried Virtual Router running through Boot Camp?

Does not work for me. I got an Error saying Virtual Router could not be started. All my drivers are up to date and my SGSII is connected to my PC

Virtual Router won't work on Windows 7 home basic edition.

So this program does just the same as connectify?

Could you give me some details about your OS and Hardware? I'm certainly not claiming to be a wizz when it comes to Hardware and Networking problems, but i may be able to help

Yeah sorry! I didn't read the documentation of the program before posting, but apparently this program only works on Win7 (minus Basic Edition)

Sure, although internet sharing is achieved through a slightly different process. If anyone has had problems connecting a Android device through Connectify, i strongly recommend they give Virtual Router a try. Chances are it will work on Virtual Router (providing you're running Win7)
Also, when i run a speed test on my S2, i find internet speed is slightly faster on VR than Connectify. I don't know why that is (must be to do with the way both programs connect devices) but i'll take it!
Cheers

You can only share a wifi connection through Virtual Router when your PC is connected to a wired connection, i don't believe Virtual Router will be able to share wifi coming from your HSPA modem.
Also, how are you connecting your S2 to your computer?

Hi! With my Win 7 Ultimate SP1 doesn't work. "Virtual Router Could Not Be Started!" error.

Same for me W7 Proffesional

Tethering on Vista

Hey guys, i've searched around here and PPCGeeks but can't seem to find an answer.
Obviously I have a Touch Pro and I want to tether it to/with my Vista Laptop. I'm currently using WMWifi Router and it works fine but it drains the battery and the phone gets REALLY hot, rendering it unchargeable until it cools down.
I know I'm not the only one that is trying to tether with Vista so how are you guys able to do it? I can tether with XP no problem.
I've installed all the hacks, registry edits, fixes, and nothing.
Any help?

I was tethering this weekend using hte usb cable. It was working fine on dcd rom 0.92. However, I tried wmwifirouter 0.89 and it didn't work at all. I'm not sure why, but I had to reset the registry with the crash cleanup in order for the regular tethering to work.
My phone has been getting warm with heavy internet use, but I am in a low signal area. It is the phone using a lot of power to get to the network.
I tether all the time. I use Internet Sharing. Open Internet Sharing on your phone, then connect the phone to the computer/laptop using your usb cord. Then hit connect on your Internet Sharing and voila - internet on your computer/laptop.

Me too. I took a trip this weekend and just used Internet Sharing. Worked every time like a charm. I'm using it with NFSFAN's latest ROM and Vista Ultimate.
I am tethering with Vista and my TP all the time, in fact i am writing this using that connection with my vista lappy and TP(wm6.5+Shell3(no touchflow)) with wmwifirouter(1.35) via 3g(sprint) and wifi. Thats the worst possible configuration for heating up the TP and thus stopping the charge. Here is how i beat it, try this steps one by one until it stops overheating and lets you use net and charge at the same time:
1) turn off screen on TP(saves batt life as well as heat)
2) + slide the keyboard open(better heat dessisipation(sp?)
3) + take out stylus
4) + set it up so TP is standing up(lean it on something)
5) + point a regular fan at TP(thats where i am at atm but the temperature inside my room is close to 90F)
I've been online today for a total of about 40 mins(heavy downloads and 6 tabs open) and still charging(step 5)
Thanks for the pointers Pesok.
I know how to tether.. i've done it for a while with my old XP laptop. The whole "connect usb, internet sharing, etc" is second nature to me.
I should say I'm using the stock rom.
I've been using PDANet and/or WMWifi depending on how much battery life I have.
As far as the conventional method, internet sharing, connect, etc.. it's just not working. I must be missing something

You do need to install the Windows Mobile Device Center Update. You can get it here: Mobile Device Center 6.1 This is for 32bit, if you need the 64bit version go here
Even though you may not sync the device, it install's the driver that is used when it acts as a modem in internet sharing mode. I used it with Vista and Windows 7. Windows 7 is good enough to automatically download and install the driver saving you the time.
If you have done this and it still doesn't work I have some more troubleshooting you can try.

I dl'd this and still can't get my TP to connect using Internet Sharing. It sync's just fine, but when I try to connect, it makes a noise on the laptop that like when the cable disconnects, then makes another alert like it failed to connect.

Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App
there is a option on HTC that when you connect your phone to PC, it asks you one more point "connect to PC's internet". but i's interesting, if is that possible on ACE.
Sorry for my bad English (((
Check USB tether on market ;-)

Some networks don't let you use your laptop etc..to connect to the internet via your phone unless you pay extra.
My ace is locked to three there is a option in setting to Tether via usb or wifi but no mater winch setting i use it will not work.
However on my old HTC HD touch generic i can connect my usb cable to my laptop and go on-line with the same sim. Iam going to try and branded my ace once i know how.

Not share you Phone internet, but PC internet to Phone.
CHEERS!
What about sharing the connection by WiFi? Through Ad-Hoc?
I know that there's an option in Linux, but I'm not so sure for Windows.
Rufus87
Try to download Connectify and turn your laptop into access point (if your wifi card supports it). Anyway, buying wifi access point is the best solution.
adeklipse
In Windows he can set up ad hoc network, but Ace doesn't support it. I tried to look for working edited wpa_supplicant file, but i didn't find it.
Devs any hope for this yet?

Virtual WiFi adapter for Windows 7
You could also change your WiFi adapter into a virtual WiFi Miniport and share the internet connection if you have windows 7.. It acts as a Wireless access point and also please note that your hardware should support in order to create a virtual WiFi.. Just follow these instructions..
http://mintywhite.com/windows-7/set-windows-7-wifi-hotspot-quick-tip/
+1 mr., been +1ing twice tonight.. I also had this issue, decided to stop my ace's data plan and my brother had a decent connection on the desktop. Sadly it was our all time fav Win XP and we're too lazy to add a WIFI/WLAN card to it.
Maybe having a Terminal Emulator (since we can't do any adb commands when tethering) to establish an interface/eth0, activating the USB tether (not the wireless) and configuring a connection on the Windows would help? I've tried that, but met no luck on Windows part.
I used reverse usb tethering on galaxy mini before purchase ace. Its simple script to give usb0 ip address and some setting on gateway, dns.

Lumia 800 AdHoc capabilities

Hi all,
did someone know how to enable Wifi Adhoc compatibility on the Lumia800 ?
i'm unable to connect the lumia800 to a Wifi adhoc hotspot.
many thanks.
jp
I'm not sure about what you are talking about but if it is SFR WiFi, you just need to use the SFR app.
I can't connect to ad-hoc with an Omnia 7 either. I ended up just buying a cable router to connect to rather than my laptop. Annoying I know..
Any news on this? If Nokia won't let me teether my laptop, the least they could do was to let me use my laptop to connect to internet and then share it with the Lumia...
Wait... The OP is having trouble connecting his Lumia TO a wifi-network? Do I understand that correct? If so, I do believe the settings on the hotspot is wrong.
jbbandos: You should be able to do that already. I'll check when I get to my laptop, but it works at home.
The problem I have is that the lumia connects to a access point, but won't connect to my laptop ad-hoc network. So wifi works, but seems to be incomplete.
If I recall this is actually by design. The iphone and I think a number of android handsets also don't support it. Remember reading about it when people talked about parrot drones.
Which then had to issue an update to start a connection in infrastructure mode as opposed to ad hoc.
The exact reason for the lack of support kinda elludes me though. Could be a security feature to prevent drive bys and hijacks I guess.
As a workaround, there is this application called "Connectify", that allows you to turn your Laptop into a WiFi hotspot. Works fine with Windows 7 (and 8) and my Lumia.

I actually tried it on a WIN 7 X64 pro, I created just a adhoc network on my wifi adapter (both a unsecured/open network and a wpa2-secured one) and connected my lumia to that wlan using the settings below "WLAN -->advanced settings-->add a wlan network " and manually typed the SSID here. Connection succeded, can reach my laptop, but nothing more, cause my Laptop isn't a router.
So all you have to do is to create it manually on your Lumia.
If you want to use it to connect your Lumia to the internet, you have to setup your adhoc-network-device to forward the pakets from its adhoc-adapter to its internet-adapter.

Unable to connect to adhoc wifi

Hi all,
I just got my brand new Samsung Galaxy SIII
All is well except for the fact that the phone is failing to even detect the adhoc wifi that I've setup. I get my home's internet using a mobile cdma usb modem and I've setup an adhoc wifi connection thru internet sharing option in windows 7.
Here's a twist though: When using my Ipod Touch- I noticed that the Ipod manages to detect the same adhoc wifi network I've setup- the Ipod also manages to connect to the network but fails to provide any internet. (from windows 7)
Oddly enough- the only way I can get adhoc wifi to work is when I use it on my Ipod from Linux Ubuntu. I cannot connect to adhoc wifis from either windows 7 or linux on my SGS3.
Is there any way I could get my SGS3 to detect and connect to the adhoc wifi from either windows 7 or Ubuntu with the mobile internet that I use at home??
Bump. Anyone??
Android's Wifi manager by default does not detect or use adhoc networks.
There exist several patches (requires root) but I'm not sure if they have been confirmed to work/ported to the S3 yet.
CM9 should include adhoc support.
I strongly recommend using the Windows7 application 'Connectify' which creates a full-fledged ap-mode network and not an adhoc while still allowing you to keep connected to any current Wifi network.
I guess similar tools might exist for OsX and Ubuntu Linux but I've only used them in forward tether and not reverse tether so far.
By the way, this is a forum not a support center. So it might take some time to get a reply.
Bumping after 3 hours is just rude seeing that we all try to work together for free

This issue is ICS Related, I had the Galaxy nexus for 6 months, i tried every solution that is out there with no luck, hopefully CM will include this fix or else use "Connectify" which personally I don't recommend.

If you haven't tried it already- then I suggest you try disabling your antivirus when you share the network. That's what I did in the end to finally make it work.

[Q] How do I setup Wifi without router on win vista (no root)

Hi Everyone,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with JB 4.1.1. I would like to share my laptop's internet connec with my phone over Wifi. I don't have a router and I don't want to root my phone as its within the warranty period. My laptop runs on Win Vista Home Premium.
I understand that for Win 7 we can use connectify, mhotspot etc but for Vista I couldn't find anything. Is there any method to solve my problem besides upgrading to Win 7 or buying a router?
I'm afraid this answer giant going to be much use to you but seriously consider upgrading to windows 7, I know a fair bit about windows and vista is a really badly built os. Windows 7 is so much better, as I say probably not much help but a genuine recommendation.
Sent From My Omega'd Galaxy S3 ...
Win8 is a $39 upgrade still.
do you not just do it the same way?
on your gs3 go into settings, more settings, tethering and mobile hotspot
then on your laptop turn on the wifi, search for connections, find the one your phone just created and enter the password the phone tells you
This?

Thanks all for replying......guess I need to upgrade or buy a router.
@ skimminstones..I am trying to share my laptops internet connection with my phone....I guess the one you are mentioning is the reverse ...i.e. to share the phone's data connection with the laptop which will mean network charges ...Correct me if I am wrong.
No need to upgrade or buy a router, install Connectify to your pc. It has basic functions for free. No need to root phone either

/edit I see that adhoc mode is only available on vista version
