Better performance with underclock?? - Motorola Photon 4G

Ok.. Im stock rom with root. I got bored last night and started screwing with SetCpu.. I slowed down to 816MHz and my phone seems to altogether run smoother. Quadrant was 2725 ish.. About 200 higher than stock 1GHz. Seems to actually pick up 4g a lil better too. I dont know if this really means anything.. but wth..

I underclocked my phone to 300 mhz. Runs slow as ****, but battery life is pretty legit. I'm going to sleep, so I figured I would save it, and underclock the hell outta it. Not sure if it has any ill effects, but that's where I'm at now. And happy with it. Just my two cents.

Hot phone

Hi everybody. Well I'm running ics Zen 1.2 and my phone seems to get really hot. I have bat stats widget and I will wake the phone up and it will be in the 90 degree range without doing anything. So I checked CPU spy and its mostly in 100mhz most of the time. So my question is are all ics roms like this or am I doing something wrong? Thanks

I've flashed a lot of ics roms and have never experienced that. How old is the battery?
Edit: you said that the cpu is @100mhz most of the time. Is that while it's disconnected from the charger/usb?
The phone should go into deep sleep when it's not connected to usb and not being used. I wonder if something is keeping the phone awake. There are apps in the market that can show you wakelock info.
Its weird because in standby my phone will be at about 90 degrees and if I get on it to watch YouTube or get on the web it shoots up to about 100 degrees in no time and I know its killing my battery. I have the new1800 mah battery
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
100 degrees is nominal when it comes to high heat being bad for the battery. My old phone (Motorola XT720) was notorius for running hot, so I did some research about it and found that you really need to get worried when it starts to hit 50c or 120f+/-. This is when it slowly start to degrade the interior.
I got my old motorola up to 132f one time playing a wicked game of **cough**scrabble. I just backed out, closed the app down and let the phone sit for a few minutes. No harm no foul.
Just for a frame of reference, I have the MLB At-Bat app to listen to baseball games when I am at work and something about that app makes it run hot. 3rd year in a row I've had it and each year it runs hot when I am listening to a game. I have a temp widget on my home screen it and when I listen to a game it hovers around 104f. Knowing that 50c/120f is the danger zone, I don't worry about it too much.
If I can find that old thread of mine, I will post a link for you. Bunch of info in it but I can't search for it now.

What gives better battery life gb or ics

Hey guys does gb or ics make a different in battery life and if it does how big is the difference and does stock gb give the most battery life or does a Rom i know you Guys don't like Threads about roms and there battery life sorry but this is just generally ics stock or gingerbread rooted i spend alt of time on the internet and Im in jersey so i don't use lte i use hspa + so what's the best way i can get the max out of.my battery thanks

gb, but custom kernels with undervolting with increase battery even more. ICS will be even better once source drops and we have custom kernels for that as well. This is because ics can clock lower and still be smooth due to the gpu rendering that is finally integrated, and should've been done that way since day one. But until then definitely gb.
^^^this... Was getting 4+ hours screen time and 1 day 4hrs battery with GB. that was on the oc'd Rom @ 1.82 with undervolting everything below 1.5 and over volting 1.82.

The leaked ICS ROMs had very poor battery life for me.
My best battery life on GB was 13 hours with 6 hours of screen time.
On ICS, my best was 5 hours of screen time on Noteworthy Beta 2. Only did 1 charge cycle, though.

It depends honestly. Somedays with ics i have high standby drain and apps galore sucking my battery down, other days I get almost 4 hours screen time.
Dags alpha2 seems a bit better than alpha1. I dunno about seraphim, I promptly returned to to alpha1 once I seen baby blue text on white in my apps.
I'd rather keep charging than deal with GB.

What are you under volting 1.5 and below to? And when you say what you are over volting 1.82 is it the only one over 1.5 that you are over volting or are you over volting everything from 1.5 to 1.82?

Currently on ics alpha 2 so no kernel to do this.
When on GB i was using DaG's OC kernel (or dagr8's sorry getting them confused right now, tired will check and edit l8r). J only overvolted the 1.82 setting. As for undervolting i pretty much looked ar what cpuspy said were the most used and using systemtuner set those down one notch on the slider. The ones used less frequently i set 1-2 notches down on slider. only methodology i used and was done over a period of time pushing to see if any problems/fc's occurred. Never really got to the point where that occurred as the ics leak came out and i jumped to it. Did not make a screen capture of system tuner settings or keep a list of final changes.
Oh yeah, i also get the min frequency to 192 and that seemed to quite a bit especially when apps were forcing 'stay awake' mode. That, i feel, is the biggest difference between my GB battery life and ics. I can get 1 day out of ics with 3-4 hours screen time but sometimes an app will force stay awake and the drain is quicker.
Biggest battery saver for me is using wife vs lte. <<wifi i mean word completion error but don't mind using wife sometimes too

All good now though. ... now I have 2 batteries @ 5000mAh & 1 battery @ 5200mAh so now I'm @ 1.7 or 1.8gHz and I'll get 7hrs ......then I'll Swap to the stock battery for when involution of work.....

Battery life is the most subjective thing, it all depends on how you use your phone, what apps you have installed running in the background, what you have synced, location services. Etc...
No 2 people well have the same drain.
I'm on stock ROM and subscribe to Rogers Toronto. I get about 4 hours too.... My usage sounds similar to yours as well. Thanks I will pick up extra battery soon.

I used incredicontrol to undervolt everything by 50 or 75 in incredicontrol. Using stock freqs, and ondemand governor. And used danuntzz's tool to do most of the desensing/debloating.

I also used Romtoolbox's auto start manager to keep things from opening in the background, it's probably the most helpful app I've used. Thanks next I just need the mugen 4000mAh so I'd only need to charge it on the weekends, but that thing is really expensive for a battery.

I need to figure out what's wrong with mine. I'm getting results like this with the extended VZ battery. I have to keep it plugged in all the time. Even with 4G disabled (3G still on), no wifi, no bluetooth; most days it will be dead in 8-10 hours.
Currently running 5/1 leak radios (RUU'd last week), running BAMF ICS 2.1 with the kernel that came with the Rom (1512mhz max, 384mhz min). Most syncing besides gmail is disabled.
I'll get a pic whenever i go unplugged again. I'm working remotely this week and am keeping it plugged up during conference calls.

OK at the moment I am in an air conditioned room. Droid X2 26 °C (78.8 °F) ,Droid Bionic 21 °C (69.8 °F), the Droid X2 has a case cover both have data off ,Droid Bionic is bare naked hence the difference in temp's.
Both are sitting relatively idle. Now say I turn on data start surfing the net, downloading, playing a game etc. temps don't go much above 40 °C (104°F). If ambient temperature is higher such as living in hotter climate, no air conditioning, or outside YMMV.
These phone's will turn themselves off if temps get to high. I believe your temps sound normal.
Hope This Help's
If I do heavy tasks it heats to 41 °C... My ambient temperature is about 26 °C, which is quite high. I think 40 °C under load is normal.

Some phones do run hotter than others.
Had a blue 16gb for a while and not once did I feel it get warm in my hand. Not long ago sold the 16gb one and got a 32gb and instantly noticed it got warm in my hands. Not hot but enough to take notice. In the 40's. And it's winter here.
Still, I don't worry about it too much. My S2 also got pretty warm and at some stages got over 50 degrees celcius. Still, it never let me down.

I've noticed my T999 rooted stock seems a little hot recently even though it wasn't doing much. I don't want it to be warm because it's distracting. It feels warm in my pocket, and when I grab it it feels warm (the bottom third). Each time it bothers me, because I know that heat is wasted battery.
If I was playing a 3D game or watching a streaming HD video, then OK if it gets a little warm but not if it's just sitting idle. It's going to drive me nuts if I can't make it stop.
I wish there was a Widget that could simply instantly force the phone into a "deep sleep" state where it could still receive a phone call, but not actively do anything else.
The bottom third of my phone heats up a lot when playing games, doesn't matter what game, could be a game of cards, and it would heat up the same as say... Nova 3... or Asphalt 7...
Not sure why it does it, but it does do it sometimes when multi tasking, I am running Omega v30. But always happened since I changed it from original firmware.

These games are really GPU intensive so my bet is you slow down your gaming. I mean take breaks from time to time. App, I don't know any but you may find it and it may need root. Plus do you have a case on? If yes then it is one of the reasons why your phone is heating up so much. Can you also specify the position where the Phone feels the hottest.
Hit Thanks if I helped you.

Plus do you have a case on? If yes then it is one of the reasons why your phone is heating up so much. Can you also specify the position where the Phone feels the hottest.
Hit Thanks if I helped you.

my phone heats up in the bottom right. I don't use a case, i am fully rooted and have a custom rom. i don't have any way to read what temperature my phone is heating up to but at a guess, i would say around 50 C or something i don't know My old s1 actually plays the game smoother than my s3!!!! i think the heat is throttling it. i haven't overclocked my phone.
The processor is at the bottom so it will definitely heat up there.
The best thing you can do is to take a break when playing for a long time. Don't charge when playing, turn power saving off when playing (works for me).

Knowing gameloft, the game is probably not optimized.

I'm having no trouble playing MC4 for many hours.. Charging just makes a little warmer than it normally would be. Something happened one time when it went really hot, but cooling it down and reboot, and nothing happened ever since. I'm pretty sure there's a monitoring widget app on play store, but there's a menu in SetCPU that shows current battery level and temperature.
Omega v34 with Siyah 1.8 kernel. CPU OC 1.6GHz and UV around 100~150mv for each frequency. GPU OC to 600MHz no UV.

No sh!t, gayloft basically hate android Nova 3 has better graphics then mc4 and that runs buttery smooth and doesn't make me heat up. Gayloft are simply apple fanboys. Even though android has more downloads a hour for mc4

yep will do, just a few last things, i modified the UV a bit. My phone started to crash alot so i changed them a bit. for 3 hours of gaming my CPU went up to 50C still kinda warm but hey, it quadcore. to keep it at 30C or 24C idle you would need a water cooler. LOL
Ah yeah. My settings are a bit low.. Stable enough but hey every device is different. Rarely felt my battery warm to the extent I go oh it's hot. Good luck with mc4.

Is it possible that force gpu rendering,in developers settings, may heat up a device faster while playing, rather than keeping it disabled?
