I there.
I'm a noob on these things, i have a galaxy s 2 and saw many threads speacking of a custom ROM, bla bla bla, that makes the phone faster, easyer to use, etc etc.
Although, i already saw so many ROM's that i don't make any clue to chose one, i saw lots of threads, post, read all of them, but could'nt make a decision.
So, i wanna know is wich ROM should i install, is there any major diferences between the many rom's launched out there?
Can i pick any rom and just install?
I whant the PRO's advice please.
Can i backup my original ROM? (in case something goes wrong)
Here is a pic of my hardware

Thanks in advance.

Expect some agressive replies man.
Test all of them, then keep the one you like most. And yes, you can backup your current one.
Don't think this question really required a thread, you could have just asked it within a ROM thread..
anyway, if you like customisation, go for LeoMar's or Batista's roms
If you like it a bit more stock then go for Cognition
Best advice is to go through the first posts of the different ROM threads and just decide what looks most appealing
When you root your phone you'll most likely add CWM recovery, this has an option to make a nandroid backup so you can restore if things go wrong.
Stock rom until you can tell the differences in the custom roms threads .
If ten million are asking the exact same question its not going to happen if their was only one rom to recommend .

Leomar lots of costumisationg

Hey guys im completely fresh on the andriod scene.. and loving it so far !
Iv been reading a whole bunch of threads regarding custom roms vs stock rom rooted..
I decided to give liteing rom a go.. very visual appealing although I decided I wanted to try rooting a stock and hopefully juicing out a little more battery life..
This is where im stuck and extremely confused.. which takes me to my question..
Is there a certain rom/kernel im meant to be using ? If so how do I find out which is the right one for my phone.. ? I purchased the phone online does this make a difference to the type of rom ? Does it go by region etc..
Im from Sydney, AUS.. I would like one most compatible with the networks here in OZ.
I want the phone completely stock, straight out of the box.. preferably all the settings also. I have read some roms will wipe the phone clean.. preferable.
Hopefully someone can shed some light.. I know this has may have been asked a thousand times.. but yea kinda freaking out and seems like iv been searching for hours for some basic answers..
p.s keep it idiot proof cause like I said im new to the scene..
Thank you for reading, Appreciate any comments/tips posted..

Root has nothing to do with battery life .

Root + CWM .

Stock means no root no rom just as it is now .

Help! Which file do I use ?
Listen closely, for I will say zis only once!
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:

What if I dont remember what my original kernel was ?!
Time to go back and do more reading, just read all stickies several times and you will get all info you need. There is a ton of information telling you exactly what ROM/kernel each S2 carrier uses. I think you want to rush things, just take your time and read. You will avoid bricking your phone or come here to open "desperate, I need help" threads.
Cheers

Your very right, I was in a state of panic last night.. im going to do as you said and get my research on.
Hi all,
I have rooted my device according to the following method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
My phone specs are as follows: Stock Rom.
PDA:KJ2/ PHONE:KI4/ CSC:KJ1 (XSG)
Now that I have rooted my device, I would like some help what to do next for optimum performance and to remove the bloatware? I am very new to android world. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
trawl the rom threads see what you like the look of, im not saying this just becausei use it, but take a look at the litenin rom thread in my sig, thats simple to flash and plenty of instructions, i have found most roms are are based on nothing much being changed unless you go for miui or a cm7 rom,
if you wanna remove bloatware i personally set my phone up n use system app remover, everyone has there own personal choice for roms so its basically take a look at the thread if u like the look of it give it a shot,
there is plenty of help and advice in the stickys and the rom threads if you get stuck.

Thanks a lot Demon_man for the reply. I have noted few things in lightening ROM which need clarification.
1) It is based on 2.3.4 while mine is 2.3.5...should I go back?
2) It doesn't support Right to left languages..They say to install older versions.
3) what is the battery life with lightening ROM?
I shall be thankful for further help.
sorry thought i had updated my sig litnin is now un supported as far as im aware the dev left but this thread has taken over the litnin rom,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334124

and the link i just gave like i said is the litning rom updated

I'm a noob who needs to learn how to root their sgs2. First Android phone but I'm looking to open up and get more from my phone.
Also there seems to be so many roms and people taking of bricking. If anyone could explain the 'best' rom and what to do once my phone is rooted I would appreciate it thanks

If you don't know what you want root for, I'd suggest not rooting.
The best ROM is <insert name of ROM here>.
My advice: stick to stock.
Man, people need to use the search button nowadays :/
As well as Google.
If you're an Android noob and you start rooting, there is a high chance of failing to root HENCE a brick would occur. Most bricks you hear or see that people get are from careless actions or they don't know what in god's name they are doing.
Do not make that mistake.
Research before attempting because I assume no matter what, you want your device rooted.
Make sure you have an GT-I9100 device, check by turning on and off your device.
The best ROMs I have used, and maybe you should stick to for a while, is either CriskeloROM, SensatioN Rom, CheckROM or Lite'ning ROM, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253665
Use Odin to flash a custom kernel, for example Ninphetamine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179814
Follow guides on ROM pages to install their ROMs, installing a ROM automatically roots your device.
Good advice from previous poster.First read up on rooting and what it brings to your phone as it doesnt just bring flashing rights. As for bricking, its easy to brick your phone if your not carefull and dont read the instructions well and put the wrong kernel in Odin. Its an easy proccess but some people just dont follow the guides.Bricking in some cases is self caused. The ROM thing is a hard one cos there is no perfect ROM when everyone has different needs so its a case of read each ROM thread and choose what you like.If you dont like it try another. No one here on this site who knows what they are doing,Im quite sure, has only ever flashed one ROM in there time here.Best thing to do right now is stay stock until you read up on some important facts about flashing
1.Rooting,how why and what it brings.
2.nandroid backup
3.EFS/IMEI backup and restore-super impotant cos if you loose this info your screwed
4.the difference between each one and what each Dev brings to his/her ROM
5.Flashing.Some are done via recovery and some via odin. Also bootloops and how to get out of them
if i were you i'd first read all bout roms/kernels till your eyes bleed
then once you know how to do it, well pick a kernel and a rom which suits your needs
learn from people mistakes, i usually read couple pages on how people messed up while flashing so i dont fall in the same, and in case you brick your phone also have a way to recover it prepared

Also there seems to be so many roms and people taking of bricking. If anyone could explain the 'best' rom and what to do once my phone is rooted I would appreciate it thanks :)
As asked if you know nothing and that knowledge is so limited you have to ask the banned question what is best rom then stick with stock until you understand .
Likewise why root if you dont know why .

Why don't you take time and search all is posted it's not that hard..
yea, when i got my phone i used stock for a while until after a while i decided to root and flash different ROMs. was really scared and overwhelmed by all the info on XDA at first, but after reading everything over and over again , bookmarked tons of links i picked up the courage to root and started flashing ROMS.
haven't looked back since

Best rom posts are banned here .
Read the rom descriptions in the rom posts .
jje
Are you talking about touchwiz launcher or the complete touchwiz UI by Samsung?
Like jje says best Rom is not a post anyone wants to see again. Especially since you could search and find a whole bunch of existing threads the same.
If you want to find your answer just spend some time flashing yourself.
Make a backup in CWM then go for it. If you don't like something restore and try another till you find what you like.
Everyone has a different opinion so your which Rom question is rubbish. Only you can be the judge.
Anyway flashing a new Rom and exploring what's on offer is like getting a new phone. Have some fun doing it.

Hey guys ive been looking around for a Noob guide so I can install my very first ROM but cant really find any.... The thing is I basically get how to install a rom/custom rom but what I dont know is if something goes wrong how to restore my phone to the current state. I have a Rooted, Stock Gingerbread 2.3.4, S5830L phone. So my questions are...
Is nandroid what I need to backup my phone and if something goes wrong, restore that backup? Or should I get one from "samfirmware" (the problem is I cant find an exact match for my phone)???
Do I need a special version of nandroid and CWM for my S5830L? What are the latest versions? Or what do you guys have installed in your device?
What should I install first nandroid or CWM?
And finaly does it even matter that my phone version is "L" (S5830L)? Should I not worry about that and just follow any rom guide as if it was a universal guide?
Thanks alot guys for any help, Im very new to this but if someone can push me or help me towards the right direction im sure I will learn fast.
Well dude first of all, nandroid isn't any software. It's a part of CWM that make backup of AND memory of your device. Second thing, it matters alot that you have L version of phone. Many ROMs and guides are only for standard S5830 version, so keep an eye on it. Third, stock backups can't be restored on custom ROMs unless you convert partition to rfs again by "ext4 manager".
Last, look for similar thread like yours in general forum and you will find your answer. I and many other friends have posted their flashing methods there.
