[Q] Need help! Very confused. - HTC EVO 3D

Alright here goes. I have the evo 3d and just got it today. Was so excited to root that I used the HTC unlock from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225974 it all worked well. I created a backup and I used the Synergy rom and had it installed just to try out. I decided to revert and and wipe system ,data, and cache and restore from my backup. It restored successfully but there is a problem. When it boots into the OS the screen goes black. The screen is still responsive and I have had people place calls to me and it worked. Even though the screen was black I could still click on things and here what I've clicked. The screen works when I am in the recovery menu etc but when it comes to loading up the ROM it stays black. Any ideas? Can this be fixed? I am sorry if this is in the wrong section to. Don't mean to start any problems here. Seeking help ASAP. I am on hroot 1.50 2.3.3 android.

Can you get into the bootloader/recovery?

Try grabbing the stock rom and flashing it. Sounds like something didn't backup correctly so your restore didn't go great. Something to remember when you go out and start flashing roms is that the HTC Unlock method does not unlock all the partitions so flashing kernels and radios won't always work. You pretty much have to stick with roms based on 2.3.4 and use the stock kernel. Remember you are hboot unlocked but not s-off.

What recovery did you use to backup/ restore?

I got it to work.
I figured out what my problem was after a couple more hours of playing around.
I am still a beginner with this but I learned quite a bit. I am using the revolution recovery system. What I had to do I used the backup that I had created and restored it. After that I powered off and went back into the fastboot menu holding power and volume down. I then took the backup boot image and flashing it using fastboot and it managed to make everything work again. From what I have been reading around here I can't just restore everything using HTC Unlock method. That's what I get for jumping the gun and not reading enough before I used the HTC unlock but it works now. Thanks guys for the help.

Glad you figured it out. I was about to yell at the guy that told u you can't flash kernels or radios.
Google setting up fastboot. Instead of flashing images with fastboot tell fastboot to reboot recovery recovery.img and u can now flash any image any radio and kernel just like us lucky bastards with real s_off. Pm if u need help.

Phone reboot cycle when flashing some Roms

This is very weird, I posted this on certain Roms threads thinking it is a rom issue.
When I flash certain roms I cannot get pass the htc white screen. I tried this with Synergy and Viper, CursedDragon. When I flash the rom only it will hang for a while in the white screen then goes black and reboot to the white screen ....over and over.
here is what works with some roms. I will have to take the battery out, hold the vol down then power to get back to recovery and flash different kernel (not the same kernel works for every rom).
I got this way to work with Viper and CursedDragon but not able to find a kernel to flash over the latest Synergy.
I have tried the file to do a complete wipe but it didn't work.
Is this normal? Any ideas. I was thinking to put back my 8G SD since I have replaced with a 16G SD or to revert my phone back and start root again from the beginning?
What do you think?

All I know I am in a similar situation, after trying another kernel, with viper and I am stuck like chuck. so far my phone is stuck on the HTC White Screen, and it goes no further, I can only get into recovery and that is it really, my phone is no good to me as of right now. So I just got back from Jersey and I am in bumble f..k wv, and no one will help me here. Its rooted, and the bootloader is off, or the radio I should say, but I tried many chips and I wasnt able to get past the white screen, So if anyone can help please email me, [email protected] i would really appreciate it. Thanks

Try to download few kernels to your pc (silverneedle, natarchy...). Mount your sd from your phone recovery and put those files there, and apply one the time then reboot (silverNeedle worked for me)

If you guys are trying to flash custom kernels over 2.3.4 roms, it will fail. If you are sticking on splash or lopping it could be a wipe issue, try one of the superwipe zips. Otherwise, more info about your device/system would be needed. Good luck.
Not just custom kernels, with some roms it will not take any, not even the included one.
I am trying to flash Synergy-3DVO_RLS1_08-21-11(NIGHTLY).zip but it doesn't work in my phone. it keepa rebooting on the first htc screen.
I used both recoveries, just to make sure if it might work with one of them.
I rooted my phone with the very first root guide that came out, first temp then revolutionary and now it is on S OFF RL.
I used the super wipe files but don't seem to work.
Can you help with any suggestions?

Sometimes it's just a bad download. I had a boot loop happened once and checked out the md5 and found out it didn't match. I had to download the ROM 3x before it matched.

I'm having a similar issue with my phone. I did a Nandroid Backup (Amon RA Recovery) of my existing ROM and then I rebooted without flashing any new files. The phone boots where I can see the clock and then it reboots itself and continues to do the same thing. I flashed the Super Wipe file and then flashed the new ROM that I wanted to move to and everything is fine.
Does anybody know why this is happening? I should be able to perform a Nandroid Backup without any changes and be able to boot into my existing setup. I like flashing new ROMs every now and again and this obviously prevents me from wanting to do anything. Any help is appreciated!
try using twrp Recovery instead of Amon RA here is the link for the new version

I had an issue kinda similar like this and ended up having to flash the RUU through the bootloader. It is the stock firmware 605.19, and I had to reroot. It's a pain I know but it works

I to had to this at one point and it does work. I would first try to flash cwm in fastboot though. Sometimes that works.

My friend's phone tried to pull an OTA while he had CWM recovery installed, and it started boot looping. Had to download the stock recovery, name is PG05IMG.zip in the root of the SDCard, and force the phone to boot to the bootloader and install it. Once it did, the phone started up, rebooted itself, and installed the OTA fine. Sounds like yours may be trying to do something similar?
If so rooted phones need caches cleared for the ota to work.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
From my understanding, Rooted can still take OTA, but you have to have stock recovery to do it (as I witnessed earlier). You will lose root, and will have to re-flash recovery to TWRP, CWMR, or whatever your normal choice is, and then re-apply the su.zip, but otherwise easy as pie.

Stock recovery PG05IMG.zip http://dl.dropbox.com/u/61129367/PG05IMG-Stock-Recovery.zip
Hello, first of all I would like to thank everyone who has posted in this thread to try and help out. I just started having a very similar problem- I'm rooted and running stock, but apparently my phone accepted an OTA and I'm stuck in a bootloop as well.
I got into CWM recovery and downloaded the stock recovery PG05IMG.zip, but it won't install. It just aborts every time I try to install it. I'm a noob at this stuff and not very good at dealing with these sorts of things and I've been having a panic attack for the past hour, so if anyone could help me as soon as possible I would really appreciate it.
I'm really scared of making things worse than they already are. I just want a working phone.

pull battery, wait a minute, turn on phone
when in bootloader screen,
volume down, select reboot
back to white screen, select recovery ( i had to do this twice)
hold volume up and power when black screen appears
choose the bottom option (wipe cache i believe)
choose reboot
phone should be good aftter this
( idont own a thunderbolt, but i had to fix this for a nother phone, called tech support and this worked)
hope this helps - hopefully saves someone from ruu'ing and wiping their phone

The zip won't work in CWM because it's not designed for use with CWM. It's designed for use in Fastboot. Should be on the root of your sd card. From off, if I'm correct (like this with other HTC devices), hold volume down and power to boot into fastboot. This will allow it to flash the stock recovery.

So I unlocked the bootloader using the Htc dev unlock method I have hboot1.5 then flashed clockwork mod recovery and flashed the newt one s rc3 rom and the boot image all I get is bootloops over and over lock screen comes up with battery icon and everything but the lock ring and then reboots I tried to restore a nandroid if my stock rom all it does is go to the white screen with the green Htc letters and then it goes black and nothing, I can get into recovery but not fast boot USB I even tried flashing other Roms and the rooted stock Rom but to no avail it doesn't work. I really don't know what to do to get it back to normal I would be very gratefully if any of you could help me with this
Did you originally flash through fastboot?
If you didn't, and now can't get fastboot to work, your best option is to flash whatever ROM you were originally coming from (sounds like stock) and flash that.
I know you said you tried it, but that really is your best bet. I'd try it again, wiping data a few times and doing a reset.

I flashes by holding volume down and power till fast boot screen came up then selected recovery and flashed through revolutionary like I do on my og evo
Okay.
If you don't boot the recovery through fastboot, the kernel won't stick. So if you were just flashing through recovery without booting the recovery through fastboot, you probably still are running a stock GB kernel.
I would download a stock Rom and flash that. Do a factory data reset before flashing the Rom and wipe cache. That should work, assuming that you are still running a stock kernel. From the way you've explained things I would think you are.

Unlocking the phone on hboot 1.5 via HTC, leaves you with S-ON. You can still flash any ROM you want, but it is a little bit different than OGEvo. You can't just flash through recovery, especially if you're switching from GB to ICS. This may also be while your nandroid failed... Although I'm not sure because I've never had to run a nandroid and I've never created one outside of fastboot.
So, I would try...
Downloading a stock Rom.
Wipe data/Factory Reset.
Flash Rom (like you've been trying to)
That should work.
Then I'd check out how to properly flash a ROM in the stickies, there are a couple different methods, but you can't do it on your 3D like you did on your OG unless you get S-OFF.

[Q] Have I managed to sort of brick my phone?!

This is going to sound noobish but here goes...
I've been trying to hash this out for literally two days now, I've read dozens of threads and used the search tool as much as possible, but still haven't found an answer, if it is simple, please re-direct me because I must have missed it, but I just want to point out that I have made an effort to try myself first
I have a UK GSM HTC Evo3D unbranded - S-ON - H-BOOT-1.49.0007
It was last working seemingly properly on Thursday. I was running KingCobra3D-ICS 1.6 quite well for the past 3 weeks, then in the evening it froze whilst I was trying to take a picture and rebooted. It then proceeded to fail to load apps everytime Launcher pro tried to load (i.e. everytime it rebooted) and rebooted again, so I figured it was time to flash a new rom!
I went to revert back to LeeDrOiD 3D V5.4 which I has used before, and only stopped using to try the ICS in KingCobra3D. It seemed to install fine, but then on rebooting it gets stuck at the HTC splash screen.
I have seen various posts about how to get around this and I have tried to do the things they suggest but none so far have worked for me, they include:
Flashing another rom - Tried 3 different ones, they all hang on the same splash screen
Wiping Cache/Davlik/Factory reset - seems to have made no difference
Installing another recovery - adb returns "Failed (remote: signature verify fail)"
Relocking and unlocking again via HTC Dev method - I thought this would return my rom to stock, and it might have, but it still freezes at the splash screen
Other ones which I can't even remember!
If anyone has any more ideas to suggest, or posts to recommend and redirect me to, please do!
Thanks in advance!
Pav

Thanks for the idea dude, but it's UK GSM, I forgot to mention, sorry! I don't think twrp works for GSM (cant see it on their site)
Any more ideas?
Latest things I've tried:
Installing RUU_Shooter_U_HTC_Europe_1.20.401.2_Radio_10.53.9020.00_10.13.9020.08_2M_release_203403_signed.exe - Began installing, black htc screen on handset, then it gives and error.
Flashed recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.2-shooteru.img via adb - this didnt work before, but did this time, I used to have 4EXT, I'm not sure if factory resetting and installing from zip would be any different with it but I thought I'd give it a try! - it made no difference :crying:
I'm absolutely stumped as to what it could be. I've also seen posts that mention installing the original rom via RUU, but I don't know which one is mine, and the ones I've tried seem to all give errors.
Please someone help!

[Q] Troubleshoot why I cant flash CM10 kernel onto S-on

I have officially stressed myself to the brink. I try to be calm but nowhere do I find how to fix my problem. I have tried flash image gui, I have tried htc dumlock, and I have also tried flashing the .img manually through fastboot usb then flashing the entire zip with twrp 2.2.2.0. Almost every time, I must recover from my TWRP and then use bootimg flasher v1.1 to stop my evo from getting stuck at the boot screen.
Everytime I attempt, I wipe the system and cache, then flash the boot.img, then flash the zip, then the gapps and reboot and it gets stuck on the splashscreen. I must note also that when I had first rooted, and installed Rom toolbox pro, I picked out a boot animation and installed it, restarted the phone, and it didnt work. BUT NOW sometimes after i flash the CM10 that random boot animation appears. WTF? even after i wipe the memory and everything. So I turned off the boot animation, and even deleted them from the phone off the app and it still comes up. I believe this is part or maybe IS the problem. But either way, I do not know how to deal with it. I have had the Cyanogenmod 10 boot animation ONCE out of the many times I have tried flashing but it was stuck on that screen forever like I have read other users have had happen. I REALLY, REALLY would like to be able to use the rom, as it has the new google now voice and all the cool features that i would like to have now that I am rooted.
NOTES:
I am running my stock rom. I have not installed any other ROMS on my phone. The backup i created was after I installed the stupid boot animation. (In case thats another problem)
When i tested the "current" boot animation from within rom toolbox pro, the normal htc evo 4g lte Sprint one loaded but yet, the retarded one i chose for ****s and giggles is what keeps loading. FML (I shouldve chose at least a cool one.)
My backup works fine. I am damn glad i made it!!!
Sorry for any grammatical errors, lowercase i's and what not. im too lazy to press the shift key sometimes. (Caps lock is broken. FML.)
Also sorry for it being so long. I am trying to be thorough to give you experts what you need to help me out.

What happens when u fastboot the kernel? Does it say success?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Use fastboot to flash the kernel, if you still have trouble wipe the partion and try again
Fastboot flash boot boot.img extract it from the Rom and place in adb folder.
Fastboot erase boot to wipe partition
I had problems trying out CM10 also. This worked for me.
Edit:: I'm assuming you have TWRP recovery and are unlocked before you start this...
Buy Flash GUI from app store. Worth the 99 cents!
Open it and point it to the CM10 zip. It will extract the parts it needs and flash the kernel.
Once that is done have it reboot (it prompts you) into recovery and then wipe system, do factory reset, then flash the CM10 zip and gapps zip.
Reboot one last time
The CM10 animation went on for a couple/few minutes the first time, don't panic.
You should be good after that.
Make sure to install Flash GUI again though. You will need to use it to go back to a ICS/Sense ROM later (using same method). And my guess is you might want to.
CM10 is incredible on this phone but it's not quite ready. I have tons of data connection issues and NEVER get 4G in the places where I've always had good signal. Also, the camera is just about worthless. No disrespect to the devs working on it. I'd have no idea how to work the magic they are doing and I appreciate their time.
Good luck.
I did the very same thing earlier today. I flashed CM10 without paying attention tot he fact that I was unlocked but still had S-On so the phone would continually get stuck on the boot screen. I must have reflashed and formatted with TWRP 10 times before diving into it deeper.
In terms of workflow the only way I could make it work properly was to:
1. Use TWRP to flash CM10 and gapps (just add both zips)
2. Reboot into bootmanager using TWRP.
3. Use fastboot to flash boot.imgfrom the CM10 zip (fastboot flash boot /path/to/boot.img)
If I did the boot.img first it didn't seem to work, it should so maybe that wasn't the real issue but the above process worked and I'm now running CM10.
When I fast boot the kernel everything says success with no errors

Im gonna get some sleep but once again thank you everyone for giving me some answers that I can try tomorrow! I will, without a doubt, try some of them tomorrow after my classes. But first I would like to leave you all with a VERY important question that I did not think of. Is there a stable release of cm10 that has worked for you all that I can try? Perhaps that was the problem too? I was trying the nightly release that came out October 2. Once again thank you all for replying and i will try to do this ASAP after class. Sorry to leave you guys hanging so much!

Thing is it's a nightly, some people have flashed back to earlier versions and others upgrade with out any issues. Ymmv

Which nightly did you use?
Hey guys so I used padrino121s suggestion for flashing. At first I tried flash gui again like you had suggested but it got stuck in the boot screen. So I decided to download a different nightly release (20121002) and it flashed perfectly and everything transferred over correctly! Thank you guys so much for all of your help! Now one more question... If I decide to get a new nightly build, do I have to flash everything all over again like I had to the first time? Or because I have flashed cyanogen mod already do I just do something else to update it?
