This is probably a too long story to ask a simple question lol. I've tried every calibration, tip and trick to get my battery life to where it should be like others are reporting.my battery life has never been great just alright at times. And since gingerbread its been awful. I've even tried not installing any Apps to make sure it wasn't one of them causing drain. I've tried every rom cherry, alien, stock, fruit cake I'm on cm7 now. So I called AT&T and they wouldn't replace my battery because the phone wasn't upgraded on my line. (got it off craigslist). So I called moto and they said they would replace The battery. But they are out of them for 1-2 weeks. Plus 4-5 days for shipping. That being said I can wait but I'm tired of my phone dying in 4-5 hours from being in my pocket all day on campus while I'm in class, with light usage between . So while I wait for the replacement. I was thinking of buying a battery off amazon. And I was wondering how many people use or have two batteries and how useful is it? Or people that have one healthy battery is that enough in your opinion? Sorry that was so long and drawn out lol

So far so good. But I'm still trying to calibrate the phone. I will be at %1 for 8 hours. I'm pretty sure that it's due to me swapping the batteries instead of charging it in the phone.

I'm fortunate, I guess. My battery life has always been pretty good. One battery is sufficient as I'm never that far away from the ability to charge it with either a wall charger or car charger. Since I typically can go all day on a single charge, if needed, I'm content with just the one battery.
Just one and I don't feel like needing more than that...
I use my Atrix a lot, and I mean A LOT, but whenever I sit on my desk, I plug it into my trusty Lapdock and work from there, both on the phone and webtop. Very convinient I must say.
Obviously the Atrix charges while docked, so whenever I need to walk out of the office, the Atrix is 100% charged and ready to go.
Cheers!

underclocking with setcpu is the only thing that works for me. that and use the alien theme. for now, it will give you exceptional battery life when using a screen off underclock profile compared to others.. my phone actually holds it's battery while sitting around.. by which I mean, while sitting idle with the screen off I lose about 1% every 2 hours. ;-)
this also assumes you disable all networking when idle. green power automates this task. if you for example, leave an app like Netflix on pause and let your phone go idle, your battery will suffer. best to close all tasks before standby
I have not had any problems with the stock battery. The first week was really bad, and it only lasted maybe 6-8 hours. After that first week, it got waaaaaay better. I can get easily 2 days of moderate use on 1 charge. It seems like it's getting better as time goes by.
I have two batteries, but i rarely need the second battery but i just switch the batteries around so i get a good lifetime out of both of them. With light usage i easily make it through the day but my phone goes on charge most nights so i rarely test it more than that.
I bought a backup off of amazon. rarely use it, either on weekends when I am doing a lot of running around and can't charge it through the day, or at the end of the day if something comes out that i want to flash but don't want it to die.

I bought myself and my wife a TB on launch day (yes I love being a guinea pig), and there are no 4G covered areas anywhere near here (all 3G). Both phones were properly charged after being activated and before being tested. My own phone was unplugged yesterday morning when I arrived at work at around 7:30 am and it finally died at midnight with light to moderate use (some phone calls, texting, web surfing, downloading apps, one hour of listening to music with double twist app and jogging with cardio trainer app)., Today my phone has been unplugged for five and a half hours and it's down to 80%. My wife is getting about the same battery life from her TB.
We knew from earlier reports that this phone lasted only about four hours running 4G LTE, and even WiMax running on Evo gave it terrible battery life, so I'm not entirely surprised that there are are still problems with this phone regarding battery life and 4G. I am almost relieved that I don't live in an area that has 4G at the moment.
Just to clear the air, I'm hoping that other TB owners who do not live in a 4G area will share their experiences with battery life so we know that this is mainly a 4G issue and not entirely a TB issue, and hopefully if that is the case, we can get a push for a 4G toggle until this issue is resolved.
Same here
I am getting better battery life out of this phone than I was on my Eris on GSB 2.0. I am very surprised. I use WiFi at home and that seems to really help but out in 3g....it really is quite good. I haven't had it in a 4g area so I can't compare but I have no complaints.
Even in a 4G area you can turn off LTE and get better battery life. I made a shortcut to the phone setting using anycut.apk to make a short cut to phone info. Got this from another thread on the forum. Works great.
My battery lasted 12 hours yesterday with what I would consider heavy use. An hour of gaming, 2 hours of pandora, about an hour of voice calls and checking facebook throughout the day. I'm very pleased with battery life. I was on wifi most of that time though and there is no 4g in my area.

Happy with battery life so far
So far my experience has been quite favorable. I have been using my phone quite a bit, navigator, text, browsing, games, fm radio (we really like that) and frankly the gloom and doom reports fortunately haven't come true for me. I am easily seeing 9+ hours.
I have had a couple of nasty freeze-ups while on the phone. The first one sent the phone on its own reboot, the second required the battery to be pulled (good night that is a challenge) since the screen and the buttons became unresponsive. I will have to watch that - a phone has to work as a phone or well, it is a mini tablet instead of a phone.
first full charge last night, off the charging this morning, after 10 hours of uptime unplugged, which included a few phone calls, facebooking, playing around for about 30-45 mins on games, i was still at 81%.
This is far better battery life than my evo ever was(until i rooted it and had CM7, was getting 3 days a charge then.) And if it says anything, it isn't rooted yet(working on that now) so I am very happy and impressed with the phone so far...
and as for a previous post. I was unaware that you could turn off 4G/LTE at all. My understanding was it was always on no matter what.
Agreed. When the TB is not switching from 3g to 4g. Battery is good

He is running a custom rom that likely dramatically governs the processor and other power factors. It was the primary reason I rooted my Incredible as the custom kernel I got had me go from 10% at the end of a 16 hr day in standby to about 80% remaining. So I could totally see 3days of light to no use from the EVO with a custom ROM.

yeah that is pretty much it.
CM7 is very very light, and also had SetCPU to down clock the processor to 245Mhz anytime the screen was off. It was also on the stock battery too. I have no idea what I could have gotten with an extended battery. That 3 days wasn't practical, but I made it happen non the less to shove it in a friend of mines face who kept his iPhone 4. I had an iPhone 4 and left it for the Evo, and he got mad about it.

if you look at the bottom you can see the screen was very seldom on, I always had wifi off, gps off, and 4G off. Phone was still at like 9% i think to when I took that screen shot. I could have gone longer but my phone is my alarm clock and I had to be up the next morning and needed to go to bed. Stupid jobs and having to work. haha.
After a couple of charge cycles I must say that I am very satisfied with the battery life on my Thunderbolt. I was at work the other day for 12 hours and the phone was at 35 percent when I left.
I agree. The Evo has terrible battery life out of the box but with CM7 and proper tweaks for it's settings, you can get pretty good battery life, even using a stock battery.
Considering that the battery for TB is a lot better out of the box than the Evo, at least for those in non-4G areas, I can only imagine how great it will be running CM7

the only thing that bothers me about it, and someone please chime in if I have no idea what I am talking about, is after pulling up quadrant and just looking at the info for my system, it showed my processor on my TB as running at 245Mhz at that moment, and capable of running at 1024Mhz.
I could be wrong but I thought the evo ran at 998Mhz right out the box and didn't change clock speeds.
So if this is the reason why battery life has been so much better out of the box, hopefully we can still make a gigantic improvement.
Alright, I've read countless "photon battery issue" threads and none really have a good answer but this is just ridiculous:

I went to bed with the thing charged to 100%, wake up 8hrs later, not having used it once and its at 50%... okay, whatever, I guess it was about 8 hours...
So I charge it to 80% then go work-out for about maybe 2 hours and when I'm done the SOB is at 40%- I DIDN'T TOUCH IT THE WHOLE TIME! I DON'T THINK IT EVEN CHARGES THAT FAST! I don't care if it was searching for signal the whole time, which it shouldn't have, WTF?!
Other anecdotal stories: I'm fanatical about battery life and always charge it full before going out for the night or something and I'm usually lucky to make it to bar close, a total time span of MAYBE 5 hours. How is this even possible?! The damn thing is supposed to have a 10 hour talk time?! Even if I was on the phone the whole time (which not even close, just txting and using it when you're awkwardly alone while your friend goes to the bathroom)- WTF!?
I'm extremely vigilant about charging and monitoring battery life and despite my best efforts I get burned constantly. I even have this thing on airplane mode at work (in a basement) cause it will be dead by the end of my shift.
Any one use a rom that gives a noticeable increase in battery life? Doesn't seem like many of them are mature enough. Juice defender doesn't seem to help much... do I have any decent options? I may start carrying around a second battery but seriously, that's a bit silly.
/venting.
you have a bad battery, just call up Motorola and see if your still under warranty, if so, have them send you one, that's what i did and i've noticed a substantial increase in battery life
Hey man, did you calibrate your battery when flashing roms? Battery will die faster when dont calibrate. Currently which rom are you on. also check some programs that might run in the background. Right now, im getting about 17 hours, but i am over clocked and under volting this bad boy. I posted my battery life prior to running jokers ROM. Check it out.

I think I have some issues with my battery as well. It discharges fast! I usually have it full all the time but the times where I have left it discharge cause I'm lazy I wonder how everyone post pics with 13+ hrs when I feel like my won't get even 10. Btw, my battery has been in water for a brief moment idk if that affects it somehow?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
In my experience, bad battery life is usually related to some apps or settings wrecking havoc in the background. Unless you happen to have a phone with LTE and a smaller battery of course.
I always get an average of 30 to 40 hours on one charge with moderate use on my Photon, stock rooted...
For me, live wallpapers demolished my battery life. Also, I completely formatted sd internal before flashing joker skinny.
No rom here, just rooted- lime green theme. I didnt calibrate but for a theme i shouldn't need to? Ill look into getting a battery from moto, no reason i shouldn't be covered.... Aside from rooting that is. Also wouldnt phantom app drain show in the pics posted?

How much screen on time did you have? how long has it been since you flashed your current set up?

sorry forgot that shot....i rooted and flashed on either Sunday or Monday this week.....now i do use bluetooth for work so i'm thinking that kills the battery big time....
That is kind of good battery life considering you got almost four hours of screen on time. If your really worried then you should get one of the 3500 mah batteries. I have this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21589969. This battery gets me through at least a day and a half of heavy usage, and it works great for the price.
yeah i wasn't sure...i always keep reading about people getting 1.5-2 days on a battery...it's a new toy so hopefully when the excitement wears off that screen won't be on so much
That's exactly what will happen. You have new phone syndrome. I did too, when I first got my Galaxy S2. Except that I, unlike you, was running stock unrooted, and my battery life was more like 8 hours. I'm now running stock rooted with Entropy's kernel, plus I don't use my phone as much, and I get between 15 and 20 hours.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Yeah...with almost 4 hours screen on, and mostly on cell data (assumption based on your 2.x hours of wifi on) that isn't too horrible. Your total awake time is about an hour more than screen on, so assuming you had phone calls, music playing, or some other screen off background task to account for some of that, you're doing pretty good...

LOL so I'm guessing the best way to really conserve battery is to keep the screen off. Just outta curiousity (which I will test tonight after full charge) what is an acceptable drop rate when phone is fully asleep for say 8 hours or so. Like what 1-2% an hour?

2%/hour idle drain I consider bad - that's why I haven't released a kernel since 1/2/2012 - I have a power management regression that pushes drain to a bit over 2%/hour when connected to wifi.
I strive for 0.5%/hour and get very close to that frequently when in a good signal area. In a weak signal area (like at my desk at work), it's around 1%/hour.
4.5%/hour or so is the idle drain you'll get if the phone is unable to enter deep sleep.
I first had an incredible, now a rezound, and want to move on to the DNA. I was wondering how the battery life is treating those who have it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've had the phone for 2 days now. I consider myself a moderate user - especially during work. Today I had bluetooth and location services off, streamed for a bit, surfed the internet, and did a heavy dose of texting and downloading apps all through 4G (no wifi @ work). The battery lasted me roughly 14 hour due to the usage of it only in spurts. For reference I got into work at 8 and left at 5:30 with 45% battery life left. I then used it only a little the rest of the evening.
However, yesterday was Thanksgiving so I was on it most of the day, and it needed to be juiced up around 9 hours with all the bells and whistles on (phone wasn't on auto bright, etc).
If you are a light - moderate user and do a little application maintenance I can see this phone easily lasting 16-20 hours. When the phone is off it SIPS the battery.
If you lean towards the heavy side then it will need a charge closer to 7-8 hours. I come from a Thunderbolt for reference and this obliterates it. To sum it all up, the battery is better than I thought it would be. The key is to kill services you don't use. We will have to see how it fares when I am in NYC for work with no access to a charger. I'm sure if I use it sporadically I could be fine for an entire day.
Hope this helps.
I hope these screenshots help!
~5 hours on airplane mode.
~6hrs on LTE
Rest is wifi.
Not a super heavy user, but so far i am impressed.
Under 30%, the battery drops so fast! Dont count on 30% to give you anything useful...An afternoon of light texting will probably kill it.
My battery only charges to 99% -- has anyone else seen this? Will my phone keep trying to charge it, and therefore wear out the battery?
Will a QI pad just constantly charge, instead of stopping once its 100%?

Guys you need to be honest with yourselves here, anyone can do everything possible to get the most out of their battery (heck I got 3 days out of a Droid 1 before), but in real world use you'll be lucky to make it through the day if you use your phone a lot. If you're a light/moderate user you will be fine from morning until night, but if you tend to use your phone for hours expect to charge it during the day.

I am being very honest with myself. So far, I am getting more battery life than a Galaxy Nexus with extended battery. I hit an easy 3.5 hour screen time yesterday.
Playing games.
Watching netflix
Streaming Pandora to BT for 2 hours.
Streaming Google Play music for 2 hours (headphones)
Playing with settings
Making calls
Texting
MMS
Browsing Internet
Youtube
Half of my time was on LTE and the rest on WiFi. I took it off the charger at 7:30am and it got down to 12% before I put it on the charger at 10:30PM.
My Gnex with the same use would have been completely dead by 3:00pm and only if completely on WiFi.
My usage hasn't become less since I used DNA...if anything it increased due to me setting it up and playing with it. So I really, really doubt I am kidding myself.
I came from the GNex as well. First day I had this device I had to go and work my 16 hour shift(3pm-7am). I always had my GNex plugged in by 7pm after my normal use of browsing, texting, games and such. I made it until around 10pm before I plugged it in, and that was just because it was at 40% and I wanted to top it off before my 2nd shift. Went back to 100% and used it until about 430am when I stopped playing around and read a book on my Kindle. Used my phone as an alarm for every 30 minutes and I didn't plug it back in until I got into my car for the drive home. I've never been happier with a stock device.
I just got this phone. I have a GS3 as a reference for battery life. If I can get three hours of screen time out of it, I will be a very happy camper. I guess it just goes to show you that when everything is working together in harmony and everything is power efficient, the size of the battery isn't nearly as important. Look at the iPhone, no matter how much you want to hate on it, they have been stick sub 1500 mah batteries in there forever, and they seem to last all day for the most part. I would have preferred to have a larger battery, but after reading the reviews this morning on it I was convinced to go out and pick one up. The screen is awesome, I'm really surprised that it doesn't drain more battery than it does.
I just made it to lunchtime without it going dead.
Dropped to 40% with some download ads, a few YouTube videos l, some Facebook and some music via blue tooth.
I had to plug it in a few hrs later when it dropped to 20%.
About as good as my Rezound with a 2800 mAh battery.
Pretty much nothing will last me all day with the data I use.

Judging by the screenshot how many hours of screen time do you guys think he currently has? I might trade him his DNA is practically less than a month old.

I have absolutely no clue, nor would anyone else. If you really want to know his on screen time ask him to install gsam.

+1 for gsam, great app.
What does it matter what his current screen time is? Two people just told you they get 5 hours of constant screen time and 3 hours would be a bare min with hard hard gaming and tasks. For what this phone is, it does fantastic for its battery.
And if you are spending 5 hours staring at your phone you may just be an inrovert. Lets think about this, if you spend 5 hours glued to your phone, thats 20% of your day blocking off everything around you. Thats alot of things to miss out on.
Is that 5 hour mark achievable with just LTE and no WiFi?
I get a full day (17ish hours I am awake) with at least 3hrs screen on and will goto bed with at least 20% charge left.
edit: I also have 4g and wifi on throughout the day - never turning either of them off.
The battery life has a lot to do with your signal coverage.
Take this as an example. For the first few months with the phone I worked in an office with poor signal reception. I mean bad. It would be hunting for even a 1X connection on minute, then showing full bars of 4G the next, just to lose it all 10 minutes later. (It was the building, not the phone). Now I'm in a new office that has excellent 3G coverage (4G seems to come and go, I blame Verizon).
My routine is the same. Unplug at 6:30am, moderate use throughout the day. At the old office I'd be down to 30% or so by lunch (12) and if I didn't charge it I'd die around 5:30pm. At the new office I actually forget to charge it during the day sometimes. It'll last until 8pm. And that's using the phone a good amount during the day.

What ROM/kernel/settings are you using? I've never gotten over 4.5 hours.
I don't know about screen time but I'm right over 12 hours off the charger today and have 53% left. Most days I have between 25% and 35% left when I put it on the charger at night after 16 hours. No wifi, LTE on and auto brightness. Only had to charge it twice before the end of the day.
I will install GSam though. I'm interested to see what my actual screen time is.

I get about 3-4 hours of on-screen time and about 12-15 hours on a full charge This is about on par with my S3. I'm quite happy with the battery life as I was expecting much worse.

That's a little higher than normal for me, for example, today I'm at 15 hours and have 14% left.
On days where I use my screen a lot I get less.
The other night I was working on some late night research and my phone was plugged in and I noticed the charging light turn green. Knowing I had at least 5 more hours to go before I was done, I un plugged it, put on Netflix over 4G, streaming some hd movie my kids watch, since Dr Seuss about trees. Anyway, i let it play at full brightness and recorded the time and percent. It died at right around 5.5 hours.
I ended up using the best fit line (linear approx) and wrote a model of battery life as a function of screen tine, brightness, and 4g vs wifi. I'll see if I am find it.
But over 5 hours is pretty respectable though. I was impressed.
