Hello,
I have got sony ericsson w8 and can anyone tell me how to root it and update to 2.2 or higher?
I read the threads but was unable to understand as I am a very new and dont know much. So, if someone could really sort out the solution for this in simple steps. Also, if I root my phone, will the warranty be void??
If so, then can i unroot my phone to original after i have rooted my phone and installed custom ROM and again extend the warranty??

If you root your phone, Yes the warranty will be void but only if they find out it was rooted. But there is a way to unroot your phone and it erases the trace of the root, so they wont know you rooted it. Thus, keeping your warranty.
If you want to root your phone, please follow this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046605
It is a guide to rooting the x8, but the x8 is the same as the w8. PLEASE follow the directions the link provides very carefully. Make sure before you do anything, that you have the sony ericsson update software on your computer, connect your phone and make sure your phone is up to date. Also, once you complete the root process and install xRecovery, make sure you use xRecovery to do a complete backup of your phone before you do anything else with the phone. This is so that if anything happens to your phone, you can use xRecovery to restore your phone back to stock and use the sony ericsson update software to unroot your phone.
If you have any problems feel free to pm me.

Let me start by saying that there are other threads on this, I'm aware, but I have yet to find a solution. So I bought a sony ericsson xperia x10a around November, and I'm sick of waiting for a 2.1 update to hit the US, given that it probably never will. I wish to update my phone to android 2.1. Now, I've already rooted it. It is currently unrooted and back to blank slate, but I can root it again easily because I know how now. However, my problem is that to update it, I need to flash it right? So working through flashtools with the firmware .ftf I need/want I come across an interesting roadblock. I need to allow unsecure apps for it to work, apparently. This is a problem because it cannot be done with AT&T brand on the phone. So it looks like I need to debrand it. My question is how? trying to exploit the pccompanion/seus repair function to have it debrand with blob_fs does nto work as the helper redownloads the file and overwrites the changes, so those guides seem out of date. Now, I have read in other threads that you do not need to debrand, just run flashtools, if you dont need to debrand, then how do you allow unsecure apps as flashtools instructs? Do I just ignore that? If I ignore that then wont the apps needed for the firmware not be installed? Please dont don't condescend too much to me, I have read other threads but I cannot find an answer, if its there then I'm just stupid. But I would really like some help or explanations.
EDIT: Firmware is 1.6, Baseband is 1.1.32
I used flashtool tool on my phone when i got it back from the shop and it debranded it. So i can get any app i want. There is another way to debrand but it cost money but flashtool is much easier to use.
U asked some very good questions. I repeat u arent stupid. it took me months of studying these forums before i started the ROM stuff. Let me know if u need help with flashtool.

I have tried flashtool, but I am told to allow apps from unknown sources before continuing. Because I have a branded phone at that moment that is not an option available to me. Do I proceed anyways? Wont that just not put any apps on that I need, like android keyboard?
Hi heres a quick tutorial on what to do. This guy does many videos on flashing and such. He does a tutorial on the flashtool and other videos on how to rootand install important apps like xrecovery. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9_pFOxPJUY
go to that link. It should help you in updating your phone to 2.1. Also if you have any questions i'd be glad to help you. This tutorial and other videos from this guy have shown me everything i needed though.

Only v10b is root-able. If you have other version you gotta downgrade to v10b.

you cannot root 2.2.1
you can find all the info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875881
basically find an original LG firmware for your country that is 2.2 (v10b). Then flash phone using flash tool from emergency mode with firmware.
Once you have the original 2.2 rom on the phone, grab Z4root app and then easy to root phone.
Next step is custom rom like cyanogenmod 7 etc if you want real performance! start reading! (alot)
Has anyone tried SuperOneClick to root the O1? They say that it can root any version of Android. Is that true with O1?
No,only 2.2 is rootable for now
I suggest that you read the thread given below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007244
The instructions are well explained there.

Once you root your phone immediately install the recovery. Don't play with a rooted handset if it is not having recovery. Otherwise you will end up in a boot loop and its really hard to get phone back in working condition(in case something goes wrong).
Be very carefull while installing recovery. Crosscheck twice before you push anything to handset.

Hello, I am very new to smartphones and I need some help about a few things. I tried to find some answers on the forums first before posting, but the amount of new information is quite staggering and I got confused in no time. If I missed any important information for newbs like me please direct me there. I do have good knowledge of PC and programming in general, but so far nothing at all about smartphones.
I have an unlocked Xperia x10a, not rooted, originally from Rogers in Canada now using Fido. I'm running Windows XP SP3 on my PC. I just found out that a month ago Sony Ericsson released a new android update for it that's 2.3.3, but mine is still 2.1.1 and PC Companion says there are no updates when I checked today. Does anyone know if it's officially available in Canada yet?
1. "Carrier-Free"
While I was reading the Sony Ericsson blog about the 2.3.3 upgrade, I noticed it mentioned that the device must be "carrier-free". Is this where "debranding" comes in? I found a link to a website about it:
An easy guide to debranding your handset
but most of the recent comments on there are saying it no longer works. The author made and update that mentioned another way of doing it entirely using the PC companion's "repair" function. Can anyone confirm if that's still a safe way to do it? If not, what's the most common and safest way to do it, and is it absolutely necessary for getting the upgrade?
2. "Flashing"
Is it harmful to my phone by any chance? I'd rather not touch it if there's a good chance that it will break my phone. My understanding so far is that if I want the update or to root my phone this is required? Is the Flashtool found HERE still safe to use today for updating to 2.3.3?
Sorry for the long post, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. Thanks in advance as I try to cram the beginner stuffs in.
Using flashtool is probably the best way for you to get Android 2.3 on your phone.
All you have to do is download and install flashtool on your computer.
There are a numerous number of guides on here that can help you.
Sent from my x10 Platinum
Simplest way to do is root your phone using flashtool, then ask permission and install Xrecovery.
Then flash your decided custom 2.3.3 ROM via Xrecovery.
All you have to do is read, read all instructions related rooting 2.1 and flashing new rom on X10 android development carefully.
Just ask me if you need some help.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Yay the 2.3.3 update was released on PC companion today for my phone, so I guess no need to go through the flashing process now
But I guess I will still try to root the phone after the update finishes, so I can get rid of those annoy carrier-bundled apps that keeps running no matter how many times I try to stop them...
Hey guys I am a android newbie got a Neo V recently..I would like to use Titanium backup/brightness hack to move most of the apps to SD Card, and read that requires root..
Is rooting perfectly safe? cuz am not really interested in going beyond the stock SE Rom or anything?
And if I get any future SE official device updates, should I unroot the device before installing new updates or the root can be left as it is??

I'm also rooted and on stock and it still has many advantages. It's easy if you have an unlocked bootloader, else I don't know.
via Sony Ericsson Xperia
I dont want to unlock my bootloader, I am not looking to install custom roms or anything..
Can anyone else answer my question above, and can I follow this to just root my phone?? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
Root it using the zergrush method (rooting doesnt remove the warranty) its very easy and no need to unlock the bootloader , then just get app2sd or similar to move the apps to SD.
After rooting you can do many more things like removing carrier apps, move apps, supercharge, etc.
ok... so im a noob in the rooting business...
i had and iphone and the truned android all of a sudden.. and becuase i was used to the easiness of jailbreaking an iphone... i didnt pay notice when i updated my xperia s to the new ics 4.0.4...... it wasnt rooted when i got it and now i cant find a way to root it unless i downgrade back to gingerbread....
please if anyone has any idea what to do.... i would appriciate it .
You can´t root it without downgrading to Gingerbread first, unless you unlock your bootloader and go that way.
