So I was just browsing videos of the gs2 and I found that the screen is only pushing 16 bit colors. They tried to make the best screen in the mobile industry and it just fails when it comes to any type of gradient. The Evo3d and sensation push 32 bit colors which makes a HUGE difference. This (for me) settles any unsureness I had about evo3d vs gs2.
Good research!

The people who just love the amoled screens don't realize that they are not color accurate..they are vibrant and colorful but I know a lot of galaxy s owners who were not very satisfied when they printed pictures they thought looked terrific on their phones..oversaturated that's all.I'm going for the qhd but I guess to each theory own
I think it really does come down to preference. I own a vibrant as well as a inspire "4g" (which is my daily driver). I think images (ane video) are much more impressive on the super amoled screen. The potential battery savings are nice as well. All that said, I prefer to use my inspire; larger screen and more horsepower (under certain conditions)

its not like the colors aren't accurate... they may be a bit over saturated but thats all.
as far as 16 bit vs 32 bit you can't tell the difference .
we were debating this in the nook forum as 32 bit was causing problems.
switched to 16 bit and it looks the same.
the big difference (to me) is in viewing angles. laying in bed or on the couch its not always easy to have the phone directly in front of you. hopefully the evo looks acceptable using it this way.

Over saturation --> inaccuracy. Reds may still be red but they don't accurately represent the red in the image.

doesn't mean its any less accurate then the evo if the colors are washed out because you have it slightly tilted to one side.

I beg to differ about 32 vs 16. any gradient will have a ton of color banding on 16, 32 has close to none. I say close because you can look really closely on any screen and see where the pixels have changed. I'll post a video I found where you see the difference, its huge
I do hope that the evos viewing angles are better than the sensations.. i was pretty bummed about that
Edit: heres the video, watch the quadrant bench at 4:15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3axSZX1R_s
yeah i didn't see a huge difference other then how washed out the sensation looked
don't get me wrong i'm getting the evo but i really hope the viewing angles are better then what i've been seeing.

considering the evo is terrible that really doesn't help much lol.
i did google around and there are some complaints about sgs2 banding. should be able to fix it though with a custom kernel (i would imagine).

we're arguing on screens on internet forums about screens about screens about screens about screens
It could matter. I'm still never getting a Samsung.. but what if you and a friend are trying to watch a video..?
Gimme a couple a days to come up with a new sig that is cool.
Though I'm not complaining as it helps with battery life, but do any of you guys find it weird that even if the brightness is turned way down the screen is still very bright and vibrant???

Not really. As was said in another thread, the pentile screen is indeed a marvelous thing to behold. It's a case of pros outweighing the cons.

Yeah, this is about the only advantage to the pentile screen. This and battery life.
In all other avenues, it sucks. I still can't get used to jaggedness and cross hatching yet despite having had the phone for a month; I know some people have, but I can't seem to. And my friend's Evo 3D has much much better color fidelity.

Oh don't get me wrong, this is the superphone. I love it...except the screen. Despite the complete crappiness of the screen, I still choose this phone over the Evo 3D or Epic Touch.
I just really hate seeing the jaggedness of everything. When zoomed out on webpages, the text gets really pixelated and hard to see. Aside from brightness, I can barely stand this screen. Whats really annoying is when you play netflix and netflix switches to a low quality stream for connection issues; the jaggedness there is almost unbearably bad because the video is blocking in addition to the cross hatching.

I would agree that the screen is quite bright. I normally keep it at 20% for normal office lighting, and 10-15% for airplanes or darker rooms. Works quite well for me at those settings.

LOL! After reading Photon reviews, I went to the Sprint store fully expecting to hate the screen. Instead I love it! The Samsung needs to be turned up very bright to match it, and is then washed out by comparison.

I spent an hour in the store trying to see those problems and just couldn't see them. Have you looked at other Photons in other stores, etc, etc? Maybe some peoples eyes just see issues or don't see issues....
WRT color fidelity, the Photon is closest to accurate color representation - the EVO 3D is a bit over-saturated, the Samsung is WAY over-saturated. But some people like artificial saturation, which is why digital cameras have a 'vivid' setting.
Is awesome!!! Never had an HD screen before and boy is it cool! I try to look very close, but can barely see the pixels. The colors are also very amazing.
Now the question is can we use a app like voodoo screen tuner and make it even better =p lol

As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

I read a review, can't remember which one, that was saying at full brightness the whites were incredibly white and at lower brightness settings it turned bluer. Is that true? Are you at full brightness?

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.
This screen definitely suffers with some flash videos and dark backgrounds. I can see like lines flashing, doesnt look good at all and thats a turn off because I wanted to watch alot of videos on this. You guys can try it out and see if you see what I see. Colors in LCD are always going to look "washed" compared with the oversaturation of Amoled. That said as dibdin mentioned this screen seems to have an slight yellowish tint, it's mostly notable in white and other few colors.

YEAH i think so, I was using S2 before i had my xps, at first i was really thinking like that, but later on i was thinking XPS has natural colors as compare to the saturated amoled of S2. I had time to compare whites of S2 and XPS, whites are better on Sony XPS.
I agree the whites are better (blue ish on the s2 and grey ish on the gn)
I have no yellow tints so I am happy about that.
Seems I will just have to adapt to the paleness of the colours.
Otherwise this is a fantastic phone!

I just hope it won't have the same amoled display problems that the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note have...

Almost sure that it'll be 720 * 1280 Super amoled plus. Samsung'll obviously want their to be better than the nexus, and super amoled plus would accomplish that. In terms of screen, at least.

Okok, some comparisons..
For one, Super Amoled Plus (SAP) will have true blacks since the pixels are completely turned off when displaying black, unlike LCDs which only display a (very) dark grey due to the backlight being constantly on.
SAP screens also have a wider viewing angle compared to the sLCD.

It's much more impressive to have true blacks on a screen than "bright" whites lmao even my 5 year old Samsung D600 had bright whites and apart from injuring my eyes it does nothing to improve the user experience
Also it's much more harder to produce screens with True blaks than shiny whites.

He didn't say bright white, he said right white. I guess me means a realistic white color that has correct temperature and not tinted. It can make a big difference for reading text when the background is white as well.
I personally think IPS display can produce some very accurate colors, usually more accurate than AMOLED. I still love AMOLED for its excellent black level, viewing angle and ability to view under direct sunlight, which is the main important thing. I am very impressed with the One X screen though.
