Is it just me, or is there some problems with the auto brightness feature on this phone? From time to time the screen suddenly get a lot darker, even without the lightning in the room changing at all.
My phone is Telenor(Norway) branded, with the firmware: PDA:XWKF3| PHONE:XXKE7| CSC:TENKF1
Did some searching on the issue, and found some articles saying this should have been fixed in a firmware update, checked with Kies and i got the latest firmware, so either this wasn't really fixed, or is there something weird with my phone? Or something else maybe?

Yep your hand is over the sensor. I run with it disabled since it doesn't work well at all, and it's so easy to manually adjust brightness by swiping the notification bar.
Gotten a clearer view on what the problem is now, the auto brightness it self seems to work, but it's a bit slow and very direct. If am in a light environment and it gets dark, it doesn't start lowering brightness right away, but it takes 3-5 seconds and boom brightness goes very low. That's why i thought it was something wrong with it.
In my opinion they need to smooth the auto brightness out, and let it react faster, would make it a lot better.

Hi, I was wondering why our Galaxy's screen reduces brightness before going asleep. If you notice, pressing the power button the display doesn't turn off instantly, but it turns very dull for a brief moment and then it turns off.
Can you tell me why? It is quite annoying. Other phones turn off instantly, like many HTC's I've seen. Does this concern the SA+ screen? Do you know a fix?
Have a nice evening (21.30 here in Italy)
Only just noticed this now.
Why does it bother you?

It does not, I was just wondering.. I'd like to know if it's a software glitch or if it's something about the hardware.
I don't think it's a glitch as I've seen many gs2 do it.

Yes, I meant a firmware/kernel glitch but no one of the roms/kernels I've tried solved this out :\
I was very excited by the Smart Stay feature of SGSIII but after a few days, experience, my opinion is that it does not work. I set the timeout to 15 sec. The eye flashes in the notification bar but most of the time screen is turned off. I tried staring directly at the front camera. Tried various positions too but no result. And all this is done in a normal lit room. Then I tried removing my specs and then it seems to work. Since I can't do much without them, so no fixed observation. Can anybody help?

Any particular setting? Or particular angle at which you keep your phone? Mine for sure does not work. The eye flashes but then the screen is also turned off.
I have the same issue too. Does anyone know the issue and how to overcome it? Thanks
I get mixed results with it. It works under ideal conditions but I had to extend the dim period to use it in everyday use.
The icon appears to show that the phone is checking for a face and not confirming it saw one. I see it flash even when looking from an angle where I'm definitely out of the camera frame.

Me and a friend we bought s3 and both of us having an issue with smart stay !It works after you open the device for the 15-30 minutes and after that nothing, after the eye appears the screen goes off!We are not wearing glasses!!So any idea what cause that?A possible bug of it?Or any future update will fix it?
you guys running on XXfl2 or whatever it is?
smart stay works really well for me, never has an issue, even at acute angles
It never works for me.
Then again... I'm way to ugly for my phone to stay with me.
Smartphone's R getting to smart I guess.
Works great for me too...
Samsung already stated they are working on improving the feature as it is not yet capable of handling some light conditions, and most glasses.
Sent from my DROIDX
Works fine for me with glasses, as long as the phone's front camera is pointing right at me.
The flashing eye means its searching for a face; the only indication that it has recognised you is that the screen doesn't turn off.
Same issue!
Yup, facing the same problem. Keep staring at the screen for hours for the damn thing to work. But it just wont. I have tried with my glasses off. Got the same result. The eye appears on the screen twice. The first time it dims the screen, the second time it shuts it off. I have tried different angles, but have finally resigned to my fate, unless XDA/Sammy figure it out!
not working for me 2
I am not wearing any glasses but it simply dont wok tried to change the angels but no luck ... hope it need improvement. This was the main reason to purchase the s3 but....
Mine works quite well, feels like its abit of a battery drain though.

Samsung patented this feature so i guess the app dev is in a bit of danger unless he is not really rich.
Other apps wont be as good either, as smart stay was made with this hardware in mind (namely the camera). Others will have to bend and shape to fit multiple cameras, making detection algorithms not as strong.

I've had my Evo for 1.5 weeks now and last Thursday I started having an odd flickering issue with the screen. On any light colors, ie pictures, lighter app backgrounds...you can see the colors flickering as if the refresh rate isn't quick enough. It's not the whole screen, only the area of color that the screen doesn't like. It started with only on max brightness, but now I can notice it on 50% brightness. I'm assuming this isn't normal and I should exchange my phone? Thanks.
Completely stock rom unrooted.
Sounds like bad backlight, replace.
I have noticed this as well. Especially going to the Play Store. The odd part is that it doesn't show up within games, at least for me.
If you turn off auto backlight does it happen? I think I see what appears to be flicker but it is the backlight adjusting. Happens when I first turn the screen on as the weather comes in. Also, it happens when I go back and forth from my messaging app to the homescreen. It is like the backlight is adjusting the brightness slightly. If I turn off auto brightness I get nothing.

Mine is not set on auto. It does it when I manually set it to around 60 percent or higher. It's not obnoxious but it is obvious on lighter colors. Light grays, some whites, light blues. Otherwise my phone is perfect and I hesitate to take it back in case a replacement brings a worse problem. I just wonder if it is something that would get worse. It has stayed the same so far.

FYI to OP and anyone else who may see the flicker. After doing a little reading it looks like the One X was plagued with this as well. HTC released an OTA that seems to have fixed the issue. You can follow a lot of the progress regarding it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597448
Looks like it was the exact same thing that I have noticed on my device. To save you some reading, you can skip to the last 10 pages or so and see that the update they sent out fixed most peoples issues. Hopefully they will have one pushed for us at some point.
Thanks for the link. so now I don't know if I hold onto my phone and hope for an update, or go and exchange for a new one.
I want to root my phone, but not until this screen flicker is taken care of!
I ONLY have this issue in the stock messaging app. Never any other time! It's so odd. But I'm not worried because of the fact that it's isolated to an app.

I'm having this issue too. I've only seen it maybe a half dozen times and it's always been while typing a text message if I remember correctly. Mine is just like a brief millisecond blur.
so am I one of the VERY few having this issue? It looks like it's ALL OVER the One X forums, but no one is saying anything here. Most of the replies in this thread don't sound like my issue either, but the majority of the OneX complaints sound exactly like my issue. It's isolated to lighter colors, especially grays. It gets worse as my brightness is turned up. For example, if I look at a picture, only the blues may flicker, while the rest of the picture is solid.
Anyone?

I am having what you are having. I did get a reply back from HTC. It was a generic reply and one of the things they suggested was to do a battery pull. This was an email I sent to the EVO 4G LTE specific thread. I just sort of laughed it off. Mine hasn't become any worse and everything else on my device is perfect, even the color balance settled in, so I just decided to hang on to it and maybe they will fix it in an update like they did with the One X.
great to see a new thread picking up more attention than the one i started. i noticed this on my first evo and replaced it twice! all three had/have the screen flicker. i strongly believe its software related like others have mentioned, so dont give up on it yet
I just bought an s4 today with Verizon. I'm laying here in bed and I noticed something strange which I never saw on my note 2 or my s3. I was reading a Web page with my brightness turned all the way up and it seemed like every 20 secs r so it would get a little dimmer then it would get bright again. I have adjust screen tone turned off. Then I went to settings, display, brightness and I see this message that says something like max brightness had been turned down to avoid overheating. Is this why my screen seemed to be dimming then getting bright again? Yes, the phone was quite warm during all of this. It also only happens when the brightness is turned all the way up.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Its because of the heat if your phone it turned the brightness down. Because it could be a big source if heat. Interesting enough that has never happened to me.
This happens at any brightness I think and not related to heat- some of the main browsers have a slight auto adjust brightness even if the phone setting is turned off. I read it a few times so I assume it is that. I see this as well using Chrome.
In a dark room, have brightness to middle or something, and be on a light/white web page in Chrome.Pull the notification bar down and without really noticing, the screen will get slightly brighter due to the darker color. But drag the bar back up and instantly you can barely see the screen go back slightly darker again for the browser.
It was happening using any app not just a browser. I literally sat here and didn't touch the screen at all and I could see it go from bright to dimmer then to bright.. Back and forth..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
And I've seriously never seen that message about brightness being turned down on my s3 or note 2. I don't even know why my s4 is so warm right now..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
guys, it's a heat issue.
when the phone reaches a certain temp (i believe it's around 35 degrees C), it automatically dims down your display, no matter waht the brightness. you can be on 0 brightness, and it will dim anything that's a bright page, like a bright white.
test it by doing this: be in the browser when you notice it dim, and tap on the URL bar to bring up the keyboard...notice how bringing up the keyboard restores the brightness to what it was before that? that's because now the screen isn't engulfed in a super bright white screen..now it's divided between half bright white, and half darker from the keyboard, so it thinks "okay, the screen isn't fully white now, so we can go back to original brightness."
i suppose another way of showing why this is, which is much easier and idk why i didn't write this first lol but go into the brightness control in the display menu when it does it, and notice how it says "screen birghtness will be lowered to reduce risk of overheating" or soemthing. it only says that when you hit a certain temp.
the phone gets really hot, period. that's just how the S4 is unfortunately. so you may notice this happening often; i do lol
My phone does this too. I was wondering why it was doing this too. I guess the heat issue makes sense.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
Yeah dude that's exactly what the message said and I've never seen that before in my other phones. Don't understand why it got so hot? I wasn't even doing much... So the s4 naturally just gets warmer? My note 2 never got this warm, ever. I just want to make sure mine isn't messed up...

Also check for the "Screen mode". It is under Settings -> My device Tab -> Display -> Screen mode
I usually leave it at Professional photo for less saturated but more accurate color rendering. If you check "Adapt display" or "Dynamic" it will try to adjust contrast based on scene displayed which may look like brightening and dimming of display, if you had "Auto adjust screen tone" unchecked.
What does the auto button do?

Well i am calling it a possible fix as i am still testing it. I am talking about the full brightness issue that many others are facing too. The issue was the brightness would still vary automatically depending on the ambient light even when the auto brightness was switched off. So when you are in a dark room even if you wanted you could not turn the brightness to 100%. Initially when i just bought the phone for few days i felt the screen looked a little less brighter compared to how it looked in the showroom, so when i searched for it found out that so many of them out there have the same issue. You can just test it by switching off the auto brightness and keeping the brightness to 100% in a dark room and when you project a flash light or some light source on the sensor next to the ear piece the screen would get brighter and when you take off that light the screen would again become a little dimmer. I for a second thought it could be some kind of feature as well. But what ever that was i dint like it as could not pump up the brightness in a dark room to its full capacity even if i wanted it. And thats such a shame for such a beautiful display.
So i first wanted to flash some custom ROMs and see if that makes any difference. First i flashed a custom rom from the S6E android development section but the issue still persisted and after a day's observation i again flashed a ROM today from the s-6--s-6-edge-unified-development thread and after flashing the ROM i went in to settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and switched it on, since then the brightness varied just once right after the colour adjustment was switched on but now i am continuously able to pop up the brightness to 100% even in the low light area and seems like the issue has been fixed !! I have been observing it for the last 3 to 4 hours.
So who ever has this issue can try this out and let me know if it worked. I would not say the ROM installation is a must, first try turning on the colour adjustment under settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and if it doesnt work then try flashing the ROM and again doing the colour adjustment and let me know if it worked for you !! But after what ever changes you make do a reboot and give it an hour or so.
EDIT : As i was still testing it unfortunately the bug showed up again so i finally decided to flash an S6 ROM ( Not S6 edge) on to my S6E and to my surprise the issue was solved !! Now i can confirm that its just a software bug and hopefully samsung will fix it !! If any one wants to try flashing a flat S6 ROM let me know i will leave a link here with the kernel to be flashed. Hopefully this helped !!
I will test it..thanks for this
Can somebody confirm this as a possible solution to the bug?

I'm surprise so many people still recommend Lux app when it is useless for this issue. The issue is that the phone always has some autobrightness turned on even when we set it to be off. Even when you set Max brightness in Lux app, it's still only Max what the phone will do without Lux. Therefore, for those that want super bright all the time, Lux is useless.

Let's say that it is a really annoying issue in darken places because the brightness is too low. Try to compare the s6 edge with any other phone (s6 flat for example) and you will see how the issue is annoying! It is surely not a feature because the s6 flat doesn't do that. Moreover samsung admitted it is an issue (I have spoken with them several times), the funny thing is that after 2 months it is not solved yet.

What? That's not the problem OP is talking about? Brightness too low in dark places? No one has this problem, and if they did, a 3rd party app like lux would have fixed the issue.
Lux does not fix the issue. Many tried. I tried. I set Max brightness using Lux and its not as bright as it could be. You could try for yourself, turn off auto brightness, manually set Max brightness in both settings and Lux, go to a dark place and shine a flashlight on the light sensor. Screen will become brighter.
Then you'll understand that Max brightness does not work with setting and with Lux. Then you'll be enlightened... but then you can also choose not to try this and go on with your life as ignorance is bliss. When something doesn't work, most people call it a bug while some people choose to call it a feature

I thought the extra boost to brightness was a feature and helped battery?
Set to a certain maximum, on bright light situations (outside in sunlight, maglight on sensor) the display will boost to an unnatural brightness to aid visibility. On return to inside light levels the phone returns to normal.

It's not a feature its a bug. Every s6 edge has this issue . Maybe not everyone realized as you for example but it's for all s6 edge.
You can see it clearly comparing in a dark place a s6 flat and a s6 edge. The flat is way brighter than the edge so this is clearly a bug

Surely the point of manual brightness is to be able to control it manually?

I also think this is more of a "feature" then a bug.
It originally was a bug before the maintenance update because the screen would not dim to 50% brightness before timing out completely. Unless the screen was in the (what im calling) super bright mode.
Since the maintenance update the screen will now dim to 50% before timing out altogether.
But we still see the screen go into super bright mode in very well lit areas (ie direct sun) When i look at the screen in this mode though i notice the colors dont look real. Which leads me to believe that this is more of a feature to ramp up the screens brightness when you are in situations that might make the screen hard to see (ie direct sunlight)
