[Q] My applications keep disappearing, how to get them back? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All my application icons on the HOME screen are gone...
then when i press "application" to see all my installed apps (even stock apps),
nothing shows up! All i see is my wall paper! So I have no way of accessing any of my apps!
This has happened numerous times, i've tried getting phone to factory settings but still no solution
It's SGS 2 i9100 M (bell)
It's unlocked
original stock firmware
please help!!!

Have you tried Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All
Look for Touchwiz30Launcher (I think thats what the launcher is called).
Select and clear all data.
Hopefully when it restarts all should be well.

there is no "touchwiz"
there is "Twlauncher"...do i clear data on that?

yes its tw = touch wizz

[Q] -SOLVED- Work around twlauncher crash loop w/o wipe?

--twlauncher crash problem solved, see below. Feel free to answer general question though
Hi all!
Ran into a problem with my Galaxy S that I'd be really greatful if you could help me with.
THE QUESTION:
Is there some way of accessing the phone from my PC via USB and changing settings?
THE THING:
I have been running my system without problem for a while. Haven't made a backup though, stupid #%¤ as I am. When I was using the (stock) Internet browser I tried to add a (mobile) web page to the Start panel (or whatever it is called). Since then I get the error message "The application Start (process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly." Gives option to "Force Close". Whenever I do, the error comes back after a few seconds if I am at the default screen and don't quickly go into the phone or sms app. Basically, I can't do anything that my Ericsson T10 couldn't do in 1999...
I think all of my "start screens" were already filled with apps, that there wasn't room for another, and this might be the problem that causes the twlauncher crash loop.
THE QUESTION (again, in context):
So, is there some way of accessing the phone from my PC via USB and changing settings? During my searching I've come to believe that two possible solutions might be to clear twlauncher's settings or to set another launcher as default, but in the current state I can't get to the settings neither from the started phone or from the Darky recovery console.
I know I could just wipe and reinstall everything but that feels like nuking a mosquito...and it's so tedious... If there is some smoother way to get at the problem that would be nice. Also I'm curious if it can be done, and I'm probably not alone.
THE SYSTEM:
Samsung Galaxy S (GT I9000)
Rooted
Android 2.2.1
Darkys' ROM v9.4 Extreme edition
Voodoo
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot!
/Fredrik
Ok folks, I am happy again!
It seems things fix themselves for me if I only write a thorough post on some forum...
I went to android market with my PC, logged in with my google account (where I had apparently added my phone before) and downloaded another launcher (ADW) to replace my crashed twlauncher. After that I fiddled some more with the phone - obviously turned off network mode from the power menu (the menu that you get when holding the power button 3 sec). And then I wrote the above post.
Just now I was going to make a phone call (which was about the only thing working, remember?) but the screen had gone all black except from the status bar at the top, which didn't respond when I tried to pull its menu down. Brought up the power menu. At first it didn't respond to my touch but after a while it agreed to turn on network mode for me. Then ADW downloaded and installed itself. I still couldn't pull down the status bar menu to click on the "Download complete" icon and launch ADW that way, but I pressed the Home button and got a menu asking "Complete this task with:" and some choices. I ticked the box "always use this program" and selected ADW. Now, ADW started and I am back on track! No wipe or reinstall needed!
SO, short version solution to twlauncher crash loop: log into your Android market account from a PC, search for "launcher" and install one of your choice, then wait for the phone to download and install it. Then press Home, tick "Always use this program to complete this task" and select your new launcher!
Yeah, that solved my problem with Tw.launcher but if anyone has an answer to the question in the thread - is there a way to log into the phone from a PC to change settings - feel free to share your knowledge!
Addition - resetting twlauncher to be able to use Kies
Ok, after installing another launcher as described above, proceed with the following to prevent twlauncher from crashing in the future. You will need to this do if you want to connect with your computer using Kies, since Kies apparently cannot connect to other launchers (such as GO launcher or ADW).
1. Open Settings | Applications | Manage Applications.
2. Go to the tab "All" and scroll down and tap on twlauncher (or maybe it is called something else, on mine it is "Start" - check the twlauncher crash message to get it, or follow the instructions below under "Another way..." to find it in the Home button menu. You still need to complete the whole procedure to get it running though).
3. Tap the "Clear data" button. This clears your settings, i.e. the app shortcuts that you put on your start screens.
DONE!
In my case I believe the twlauncher crash was due to adding one more shortcut to an already full app drawer, so when I cleared the settings I can use twlauncher again.
USING TWLAUNCHER TO CONNECT WITH KIES
Now you can use the Home Swithcher app to launch twlauncher if you want to use Kies, and when you are done you can use Home Switcher again to switch back if you prefer the other launcher you installed.
Another way to get back to twlauncher if you don't have Home Switcher, is to go to Settings | Applications | Manage Applications, find your current launcher (e.g. GO launcher or ADW) and tap the "Clear default" button. Then (when you have exited back to the start screen) if you press the Home button, you will be asked which launcher you would like to use to complete the task. Select twlauncher (or "Start" whatever it's called). After you're done with Kies you can switch back the same way if you don't want to use twlauncher as default.

Such a great thread and no one else has added anything else to it I'm dealing with this crap atm and it is even worst. Holding power doesn't pop up the power menu. Cant access settings. I can bring the notification bar down and turn on wifi but it doesnt actuallly connect to my wifi so I can't do the remote app installation from the web store. I really don't want to do a factory reset.
as was asked here, is there a way to clear the data of the TWLAUNCHER app by using my pc and usb connection to the phone? I'm able to turn on usb storage and access it. Halp!

[Q] Tray Icon Issue please help

This is driving me totally nuts I have been trying for ages to figure this out and can't get it.
Samsung Galaxy S2 Totaly stock unrooted Android 2.3.5
My home screen had 4 icons at the bottom for quick launch.
Phone contacts messaging applications
Contacts is redundant since you can access that through the phone icon as well and I never use text messages so I swapped 2 of them for other apps so now the home screen is like this:
Phone Gmail Whatspp Applications
This is fine right up until I restart the phone
When it restarts all 4 are there until is "scans usb storage" at which point the gmail icon disappears
I have to manualy change my application tray from list back to grid view and then edit to put the icon back and then put it back in list view
The icon will then stay until the next restart
As I say this is driving me up the wall
Things I have tried:
Full factory reset and reconfigure the phone
Reboot of phone with tray in both list and grid mode
Clear data from twLauncher and set everything back up again
With and without external SD card installed in phone
No matter what I do as soon as I reboot that icon is gone and it always appears to be gmail.
And please I don't want people telling me to install a different launcher or to root the phone. I don't want it rooted and I tried the other launchers and don't like them
Dude - Sorry i dont have advice for you..but im sitting with something similiar..
Non-rooted phone..but when I reboot phone, the bottom icons (tray), get replaced by my last downloaded apps..for example, skype, flashlight and astro file manager...
After the phone has finished scanning they all return back to normal.
Im guessing this is some random bug, as I also tried clearing data from TWLAUNCHER and within time, after downloading some more apps, the same problem occurs.
Cheers

[Q] [HELP] Touchwiz crashes when deleting a homescreen SGS3 JB4.1.1 sept 9, 2012

Hi Everyone,
I have searched the forum for possible solution to my issue, but I am not able to find anything that is relevant or something that I am willing to do.
What I am trying to do is to delete a blank homescreen on TouchWiz.
My set up is:
1. Samsung Galaxy S3 - International (Philippines)
2. I installed the Sept 9, 2012 leak via Odin without clearing my phone. I just have it installed as instructed.
3. It was working fine, until I mindlessly went to recovery mode and wiped my phone data - reset.
4. I have to reinstall all apps.
5. When I was happy with my four homescreen setup, I was trying to delete the extra home screen that I dont need or want.
6. Drag the empty homescreen to trash, and boom. It crashes.
I have done the following:
1. I have cleared the cache of touchwiz, and I did my home screens again. Still not able to delete the extra home screens.
2. I have wiped my phone for the second time, this time settings > back up and reset > factory data reset
3. Reinstalled all my apps again
4. Did my homescreen thing, and was able to delete the extra home screen. Yay!
5. I was trying to call, but instead of pressing the call button from the bottom row, it moved it to NEW homescreen. I moved it back to where it was, and now I'm stuck again with a fifth unnecessary homescreen.
6. When I try to delete the extra homescreen, the trash will not turn red, and will just crash.
I don't want to reset my phone again. I have cleared the cache of the homescreen several times (settings > application manager > all > TouchWiz home > Clear data).
I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, or was already addressed, but I am unable to find the solution as to how I can delete the extra home screen without resetting my phone for the nth time.
Thank you in advanced,
Regards,
~mark
TouchWiz crash JB XXDLI8
same problem here with an austrian SIII.
updated from DLI6 by 1st flashing Easy_Jelly_Base.XXBLG8-XXLH1_Odin.tar as a base
and then updating the I9300XXDLI8-OTA-I9300XXBLG8_BTU_297718496.zip via recovery. (w/o wipe!)
everything works pretty well and speedy except removing empty homescreens results in a crash of the touchwiz.
so i guess it´s "just" a bug and we´ve to wait for DLI9.

George

Not 100% sure on a solution to this, but you could try fixing permissions, as well as wiping your delvic cache and cache in recovery.
Alternatively you could also use APEX or NOVA Launcher as a substitute to Touchwiz...
Try flashing modded touchwiz launcher from themes and app section. It works flawlessly

Just to add to this, I've got the 'out of box' jb on my Vodafone UK Samsung galaxy s3.
It's not been rooted, just has the stock touchwiz. Same thing happens for me since the jb update.
Looks like it's possibly a touchwiz bug.

Solution to this has been found, in developer settings you have to enable the animation scale. Even setting it to 0,5 speed is OK.
Technically it's not a solution since it will happen if animations are turned off, but it's an easy and good workaround.
It worked for me
Thanks, it worked for me.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Works! Another note: Just enable the animator duration scale to 0.5 and it works! you can set the others to off.

Man, this is the only option that worked for me. Tried other websites suggestion such as clear touchwiz cache (which is a bit of a bugger because it will erase all of your settings) remove battery, animation to 10, and developer options off. The only option that worked for me is animation setting to .5x.
Thanks everyone.:good:

[Q] Blank screen after unlock screen

I have a Lenovo P780 dual sim since 1 month, bought on Amazon Germany, but shipped from China.
Have rooted it and added many other apps and deleted them when I didn't like them. I use the Apex Launcher. It has been perfect up until today. I wanted to move new app icons into the dock area underneath the normal home screens. I bought the Pro version of Apex Launcher because I thought the added functionality would allow me to do this. Whether or not this upgrade is the source of my present problems, I do not know.
The problem I now have is that once I unlock the screen, the normal home screen is now blank. If someone calls me the phone app lights up and I can pick-up and talk normally, later check my contacts, see the call and text logs. After the call, pushing the "Home" button briefly no longer works to bring back the home screen. Pushing the "Home" button for a couple of seconds brings up the running apps and lets me close it, then when returning to the "home" screen its blank.
Swiping down from the top allows me to seeing the settings buttons such as WiFi etc as it was before. I can click on the "Settings" icon to open the settings, but if I try to change the "theme" the app responds every time that it has stopped working.... Swiping back up returns the blank screen.
HELP please !!!

Sorry Stumpy, but I cannot use your advice. Since I cannot see my home screens, I cannot launch any apps. When I power on my phone I have no access to any apps. However if an email arrives, the GMail email app starts and I can then read and send emails. If I receive a telephone call, the native phone/contact/messages app starts and then I can also use these apps. But I cannot start or see any of the other installed apps, unless it has been prompted to start from outside my phone.
I have backed up all data and applications to my SD card using Titanium Backup before this problem started. I have reset the phone using the internal red button, used the settings menu to restore the data and apps, but nothing helps. I can change the Wallpaper using the Settings icon I can see when I swipe down from the top of the phone but when I try to change the Theme, the Settings app responds with "Unfortunately System UI has stopped". (This always happened since the phone was new - so I then downloaded Apex Launcher to go around this problem)

Hi Stumpy
I managed to get my phone back!
I used my desktop computer to send myself an email with a link to another launcher (Go Launcher). When the email arrived on my phone I could then click on the link which gave me the chance to open the link using Google Play and then install the new launcher. Once the new launcher was installed, I could see everything again, except that I then needed to put all the apps back in the right places. Wow am I happy !!
Thanks for your time and trying to help me!!

I am glad that you manage to resolve the problem. Be carefull next time when you spend money on apps. Try free versions first time and install custom recovery for your phone. They are the best thing for backup.

Almost all apps (including launcher) crash

Hey all,
Just got my new OnePlusX and the first time I turned it on it prompted all the set up screens. I had to skip through them all because the keyboard would not stay open. It would open and then immediately minimize. Not a great start but no problem, I'll add my accounts and connect to wifi later.
Once I get into the 'home screen' I could see my status bar at the top but no icons and no way to access the app draw. I pressed the capacitive buttons and opened the notification slider which both worked and eventually got into the play store. From here I installed an app or two and got prompted to do a system update, which I did.
After the update I was hoping my launcher would work.. it didn't. The home screen is a black screen with the status bar at the top and no icons - the home button seems to do nothing when I'm in an app and press it.
I installed a third party launcher which worked - I now have a home screen and app draw. However, after opening an app, it crashes after a second or two (chompSMS does this as well as messenger, phone and contacts which are stock apps).
Does anyone have any information about this, what can I do here?
I know one option might be flashing a custom rom but being a brand new phone that should most definitely not be something I have to do to be able to call and message people..
Update: I ran a factory reset and all problems seemed to be resolved now. Not sure what was going on but I guess something happened that a reboot couldn't fix. I'll leave this post in case it helps others.
Have you done a factory reset after the system update??
