I just read that clearwire is partnering with China Mobile to get the new technology TD-LTE which is good news for sprint but bad news for customers who have a phone that supports Wimax... We spend 10 dollars extra to get Wimax and I don't get a damn signal in San Diego... Sprint is ripping us off and then they'll switch to TD-LTE and we'll all have to pay for a new phone!!!!

Rev B != LTE
However, I have looked through a few things on the phone and noticed tons of references to LTE. Also several references to Verizon...some people aren't very good about cleaning up behind them selves.

Don't need a source, EVDO Rev. B is just another form of CDMA 3G, that could bring us 10mb speeds on CDMA, it partners with 1Xrtt advanced which should allow us to have greater call quality and data at the same time, more like a GSM networks current capabilities . LTE is a whole nother network technology.

I thought that lte doesn't function right with tegra 2 processors. Isn't that why the bionic was taken back to the drawing board then re-introduced with the Ti-Omap processor, if this is true the photon wouldn't be that great as a lte device. I could be wrong

Ok, totally nervous and anxious noob here. I had a question about the capabilities of the modem in this phone. My coworker has a captivate, and he told me all about the stuff you do here, and how he upgraded his modem to 4g. Is the vzw variant capable of the same? I've been reading the threads for a few weeks now, trying to figure out what to get, and now I'm just confused with the whole process, but that's a topic for another day.
Thanks.

Not. . . . . . . . . . . .
No.
The captivate can do HSPA which is all of the sudden be marketed as 4G (as HSPA+) but only up to the device limit of 7M.
That is one of ATT/TMO's ways of saying 4G.
VZN is using LTE which is different from their current CDMA#K which means phones can not take advantage of it.

Yeah, no. The "4G" he is talking about is not really 4G. It's a fake 4G.

Its not really 4G, the phone works fine and as intended. If you want 4g, then go get a 4g phone from verizon(who has the best 4g network at the moment, forget ATT's crap)

Hahahah, this. +1
HSPA and LTE are different tech, just like CDMA#k and HSPA. HSPA has the same speed capability as LTE but the drasticly different delivery mechanism makes it a loser for these kind of tests.
LTE is the true future tech even though it doesn't meet 4G guidelines. Future HSPA evolutions are just going to be like new and improved satellite TDMA systems.... larger pipe for more terminals... but dont ldt ths customer know how many terminals there are.

If I had my choice, I would've gone with AT&T for numerous reasons, but given my circumstance, VZW was my only option. Big Red has a track record of making things difficult for the end user (like upgrading phones). I love this phone, and the service is good, but it's a bit discouraging that I'll have to wait 2 years to get a faster phone when this one has capable hardware being held back by them.
Sorry for the rant. Basically, I'm anxiously awaiting the day when I can cut the bloat and let this thing fly. Keep up the awesome work, and I'll keep reading until I get all the pieces together.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The captivate doesn't do 4g..the guy just has a theme that changed his icon to show 4g when he still has 3g. And neither phone has the hardware to run 4g.
At&t has **** for service...hence the REAL reason iPhone is with vzw now. I will never pay for at&t again.
Now that wimax is pretty dead with the new LTE contract, does that make my new 3VO obsolete?

Short answer : no.
Why? Two words : backlash.
Sent from my BEASTO 3D using XDA Premium App
sprint will not be instantly switching to lte, the network still needs to be rolled out, it will probably be a few years time, all the while wimax will still be active. im sure wimax devices will start to get phased out before lte is ready to launch.
When Sprint switches to LTE will we be able to use Sprint phones on Verizon and vice versa, and have data?

Nope your phone is not going to be obsolete and wimax will be upgraded to LTE. All they have to do is swap a baseband card on their end and an OTA update for the phone.

Answer, no.. clearwire, which is the 4g Wimax, is going to piggy back off of Sprint with the LTE, which basically means that clearwire is going LTE too so the phones should work on there bands for 4g

its my understanding after reading everything that lightsquared had a deal to use sprints network for its lte deployment and 3g roaming, they are paying sprint the money, not the other way around
Lol... People think that sprints deploying LTE when they getting money from litesquared in exchange for them using their network for testing and deploying _their_ LTE.

DoctorComrade and NewZJ are quite correct. If you read the press release about it made by Sprint (Found here: http://newsroom.sprint.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=1989) Sprint entered an agreement with LightSquared to deploy LTE basestations on Sprint's towers. This is because it is significantly cheaper for LightSquared compared to deploying their own towers and network.
With this agreement, Sprint has the option to purchase bandwidth from LightSquared in the future, if they decide to.

From what I have read, no. As I understand it, the frequencies used for LTE and WiMax are part of the old analog TV spectrum. When the US switched to digital all those frequencies were auctioned off. Different carriers now own different parts of the spectrum and their phones need chips tuned to those particular frequencies. The lower end of the spectrum has the best building penetration and sold for the most money, that's the part that Verizon bought. As for whether they can make chips that switch depending on strongest signal, I don't know. As for whether cell providers will make deals allowing roaming on each others LTE networks, I don't know. As I said I could be wrong about this whole thing, this is just my understanding from the info I've read on the subject.
Wimax is 2000+ mhz, Verizon LTE is 700ish mhz
So no roaming, Wimax was said to be its upgradable to LTE via ota push
sent from the moon
wimax and lte can be any frequency, verizon happens to have approval for ~750, att ~700, sprint ~2400. fcc must approve the usage and sprint neither has the approval or spectrum to do it lower unless they give up iden (~800-850) and then get approval but nextel ptt is still popular

I'm pretty sure the frequency for LTE is dependent on the frequencies each carrier has purchased the rights to. I believe the reason WiMax is 2000+ and Verizon LTE is 700 is because that's the part of the spectrum that each company owns, not some inherent requirement for each technology.
Edit: NewZJ beat me to it.
Might be Sprints big announcement for the fall

For eveyone except me I guess.
I seem to have their best coverage thank goodness. But still...
Probably no changes for at least 5+ years down the road but hopefully it will give us better usage. I mean I'm in Austin Texas wich is a very tech city and my service really sucks. I mean I have gotten as good as a 9mbps speed test on 4G but the signal is soooo freaking hit and miss. 4G goes in and out so I'm looking foward to anything that means better signal

Time to develop the LTEoWiMAX protocol...hahahah.
International business times were comparing the galaxy nexus and photon in every catagory and said about connectivity
"Connectivity: Galaxy Nexus has HSDPA 21 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps and 4G LTE support. The Photon 4G has Rev.A up to 3.1 Mbps, HSDPA, HSUPA, along with 4G LTE support."
I just find it weird how people dont differ wimax from LTE . Link for the rest of the comparison on the bottom if interested

The point of lightsquared was to broadcast lte from satellites. Was essentially going to give them near 100% coverage in the us with the flip of a switch.
If they are out of the picture then we are back to getting 4g from towers which will take years. To build out.

i read from some recent articles, Lightsquared has been stating a pretty solid argument (in my opinion) that the first test was purposely rigged, a board member on fcc or somethin was from a GPS company, they used old out dated gps devices that was being interfered with because of careless manufacturing (faulty design) fcc took it to courts/congress to help investigate while also redoing the testing of their network and gps interference
i probably left a lot out ill try to find links

Haha because Wimax blows and I would rather rely on Sprint to build out a 4G network than Clearwire to execute a 4G plan. We all know how Clearwire did with Wimax and lets just say its not complete. Also I would rather have Sprint on a 4G standard that is compliant to every other major carrier and follows the 3GPP standard and plus LTE is much better than Wimax.
Also I am tired of the 2.5 Ghz poor indoor penetration spectrum. I would rather have Sprint's 800 and 1900 Mhz spectrum for LTE and only rely on Clearwire for supplemental LTE capacity instead of relying entirely on Clearwire. I hope Clearwire succeeds and becomes really profitable because that just means that Sprint will be more profitable since it owns a 54% stake.
Maybe when clearwire is profitable they can begin to start expanding again but I don't see this happening until 2015-2016 at the very earliest but they need to focus on getting back into the black.
Light squared may be doomed but sprint still had clear. They are worth a hell of a lot more now since Verizon's huge priced spectrum buy a few months ago. They were set to be gobbled up by sprint but now the value of their spectrum is greater than sprints market cap. Having spent some time with a network engineer for clear, they aren't doing as bad as people think. Sprint will probably end up with much more spectrum than att has now for lte at least with their partnership. Clear will contract out bandwidth to many companies though. You have to remember that even Verizon is pretty limited and will face some problems as lte is more widely adopted. They have only about 10-15mhz of bandwidth.
