I've put this in the Development section because whilst it is almost fully functional, it still needs a lot of development. Please be aware of this when you download it. I am not to be held responsible for anything that may happen as a result of running this app.
Requirements:
Root Access & a Custom ROM (StreakDroid 1.8.0 recommended (CONFIRMED WORKING ON 1.8.0))
Built under a 2.2 framework. If you are running anything pre-2.2 please be aware it may not work.
Please remember to remove all previous versions of the app before installing.
Simply open the app and press the "Menu" button. I hope you can figure the rest out! Enjoy!
"LED Notification FREE" has been uploaded in the Market. It has full functionality and it Ad Supported.
Please be aware that this version includes an "AdBlocker Check". This will block the app from opening if you have an adblocker installed on your phone. Sorry about this but i hate adblockers Alternatively, you can just remove all instances of Admob from your Hosts file.
Code:
[I][B][COLOR="blue"]QUICK HANDCENT FIX[/COLOR][/B]:
Open Handcent, press 'Menu > Settings > Notification settings > Popup settings'.
[B]MAKE SURE[/B] 'Screen on for popup' is [B]UNCHECKED[/B].
Handcent wont interfere with my app from then on :D[/I]
NEW TO 2.0.1
Asks for SU Access when the app first loads Fixes some weird error that happens every now and again.
Completely re-coded the SMS receiver. Much smoother now!
SMS and Gmail Notifications can be turned on or off
New settings page - done properly now, wont save anything to sdcard [you can delete your STREAKLED folder now!] Press the 'menu' button when you open the app for settings.
Permissions tweaked (should be less LED problems)
KNOWN BUGS
Changing orientation during the pattern causes problems. Just don't do it!
Notifications overwrite each other. So if an SMS message arrives and then a Gmail, only the Menu button will be lit, and vice versa.
Services cannot be stopped (only by uninstalling) FIXED - 2.0
Sometimes all the buttons will end up being lit, not sure why. [SHOULD BE FIXED]
TODO
Add options for turning the SMS and Gmail notifications on and off DONE - 2.0
Have different patterns for each DONE - 1.3
Improve the UI (sort of) DONE - 2.0
Improve the pattern flashing sequence (sort of) DONE - 2.0
Clean up the code (WIP )DONE - 2.0
Fix orientation issue
This will ALWAYS be available for free on here, on Modaco and on my website (see sig) but i have uploaded a 'donate' version on the Android Market Place priced at £1.50, just incase you fancy buying me a beer
Enjoy

I've put this in the Development section because it is not fully functional and still needs a lot of development. This is basically a proof of concept app.
Requirements: Root Access (tested on 2.1 but build under a 1.6 framework so it should work on 1.6)
All you have to do is run the application, hit the home button and receive a text (or send yourself one). If your phone is locked it will wake up and dim the screen and flash the home/menu/back LEDs in a nice pattern and then keep the screen dimmed until you unlock the phone manually.
The only problem is that you will receive a Force Close error message and you will then have the re-open the app for it to work again. I am trying to fix this but will not be able to look into it for a few days so i thought i would release what i've done so far.
I will be adding settings and more patterns as soon as i can fix this FC error.
Enjoy

Great little app. Can't wait for thenext update
Nice work.
Just out of interest though, what's the dangers of having the screen on dim all night if I get a text message at stupid o'clock?
Wouldn't want to burn anything on my screen if that is possible.

Screen burn is an issue on LCD screens, hence why i set it to do a dim wake lock instead of a full brightness one. Saying that, i have absolutely no idea whether screen burn would still occur but ill test it tonight and report back
On a positive note i have fixed the FC error and will release the fully working version tomorrow!!
Nice work dude ! Look forward to a full release tomorrow.

No, i'm afraid not.
Without Root Access it will probably just force close.
Currently in the process of adding more LED patterns
It also now wakes the phone, unlocks the phone and displays an "SMS Message Received" popup which it then hangs at until you close it.
Do you guys think this is better or should I make it lock the screen instead?
What else should i add/change?

I'd prefer it stayed locked, also if I read this thread correctly, it leaves the screen on (but dimmed?) is that true? I would need it to kill the screen, because as noted, it could kill your battery if you went a long time w/o clearing the alert.
Nice work so far though...

Yeah, that's the only problem.
unfortunately, killing the screen freezes the LEDs in whatever state they're in, completely defying the point of the app
What i could do though, is wake up the screen, flash the LEDs but leave one on and turn the screen back off. This would turn everything off apart from that 1 LED and you could use different LEDs for different notifications. I'll try that out later.
Yeah, that seems like a good idea. Maybe the Back LED for missed SMS, the Menu LED for missed call. Something like that.
That would be cool, I'll await your work and give it a try.
Well, it turns out that works miles better than what i was trying before.
Basically, it now turns the screen on, keeps it locked, flashes the LEDs, turns the screen back off and leaves the home LED on.
Give me about 10 mins and i'll put up a working version. No FC error this time
Can't wait for this!

First post updated with a working version
None of the options work on the main screen yet, but they will.
Enjoy
I haven't tried this yet, but I just want to say THANKS! No notification light was driving me crazy! I'm gonna install it now. I like that it would kill the screen but leave the LED light on. That's perfect!
**EDIT**
Well, it didn't work perfectly. Here's what happened on my Beta Streak....
With locking disabled (I use the 'NO LOCK' widget), it turned the screen on and said 'SMS received' and the home LED was on, for about 1-2 minutes, then both went off. When I turned back on the screen and read the msg, the LED went out.
With locking enabled, like most people would be using the app, the screen turned on for a few seconds while the LED pulsed, then both went out. No notification. When I unlock and read the msg, the home LED stays on. I have to 'clear' the app in the notification tray and lock then unlock the screen to make the home LED go out.
Seems like they're little tweaks that could be needed. If you can make this work and be functional, I'll donate to your Paypal! Again, thanks for your work on this project!!
Yeah, it's still pretty much in it's 'Alpha' stage
Cheers, for the feedback, i'll look into the errors.
I know that if the screen is unlocked the Home LED will stay on until you lock/unlock the screen, but that should be an easy fix (hopefully), and i've not set up the Thread's quite right i don't think which could be causing the timing errors.
I'll be spending all of tomorrow getting this thing working so i'll report back
Awesome! You are the man!
A thought for down the road development:
Earlier today when I was thinking about this, I imagined an interface where the user could "record" their own flash sequence for each type of notification they had - email, sms, mms, missed call, etc. Just choose which notification they want to specify, click record, then tap the capacitive buttons in the sequence you want them to light up, then end the recording. Interval timing could be recorded or specified manually. Just a few ideas!
Thanks so much for this. I'll give it a run soon.
Awesome work. Wanted something like this. I hope you will be able to add notifications for misssed calls and gmail as well. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I think I have figured out a setup for tasker to make the notification light blink longer than 5 minutes. The setup that is currently working for me is to use tasker with the Locale Execute Plug-in. I followed DomSim's guide to get Locale Execute to handle LED blinking. You can setup solid/blinking lights using that guide. I just chose a generic green blinking light for all notifications. I also chose to shut off led notifications under settings-display, though I don't know if it would conflict in any way.
In tasker,
1) Create new profile
2) First context - choose Event, UI, Notification, Done
3) Task Selection - choose New Task, click +, Plugin, Execute, Edit, type lines from DomSim's thread ie
Code:
For green led blink,
@! echo 1 > sys/devices/platform/leds-pm8058/leds/green/blink
4)Click Done and test until it gets root permission (took several times until it happened)
4) click +, Tasker, Wait 5 minutes, Done
5) click +, Tasker, Goto Action, 1, add an if then statement so it only repeats if the notification is not cleared. Done
6) click Done and Apply
So far it's worked to keep my led flashing on notifications for longer than 5 minutes. I'm sure it'll affect battery life some, but I don't know how much. You could make it more complex and have different color (red or green) and solid/flash for different events like missed call, sms, etc. using tasker and replacing Notification in step 2 with whatever you want. Also, Locale Execute Plug-in may not be needed as tasker has the ability to flash the LED as well, but I could not get it to work in the past...but that was before I thought of using an infinite loop. It will save some typing if you don't need Locale Execute Plug-in .
original post
So now that we have root and s-off, is there something that can be changed to make it so the notification light will keep flashing until the notification is dismissed? It shuts off after about 5 minutes as it is now, which defeats its purpose IMO. I've tried using many of the LED controller programs, and none of them work reliably for notifications even with root. I've also tried setting up profiles in tasker to blink the led, but it still shuts off after 5 minutes.
Is this 'feature' in the kernel or some other part of HTC's software? I'd love for a mod/program to make it blink until the notification is dismissed or the battery is dead .

With tasker are you able to use different colors?
As for notification, someone would have to modify the framework-res I believe.

Nobody has any other ideas? If someone has it working with tasker or any other program, go ahead and post how you did it.
I guess I should title the thread "Get a Photon!" so I could get pages and pages of replies .
I've been using Light Flow, it's the best app I've found so far but I haven't tried a whole lot to be honest. It works pretty decent, though like you said not 100% reliable. You can also adjust the vibrate rate/pattern which I love.
I've come from a Blackberry, the notification LED on those are very big, very bright and multiple color selections, where the EVO 3D has 3, green, red and a deep orange. I've missed many a different notifications on my EVO 3D, specially text messages. I'll walk out of the room, come back and see no blinking light, then check my phone like 30 minutes later and notice I had a text message sitting for 30+ minutes without even knowing.
Not only is shutting the light off after 5 minutes a terrible idea, like you said pretty much defeats the purpose but the notifications not showing while charging due to the light staying constantly red is a terrible design decision if you ask me.
Updated the OP with some tasker settings that seem to be working (so far).
A total noob with Tasker here, what exactly do I put for the IF statement in step 5?
Thanks

I actually never could get tasker to work right. I got it to keep the LED on until dismissed, but the loop caused the phone to never go to sleep and ate through battery faster. If your interested, I've implemented a fix at the kernel level (thanks to joe85) for 2.3.4 Sense ROMs. You can find the thread here. It's been the only reliable fix for me.

Hi all,
Im rooted and running viper rom, with netarchy.
the bottom lights (home, menu, back, search) never turn off, even when i press the power button and put the phone to sleep. The lights dim but never turn off. I have tried led hack, and screen filter with no luck. I tried going back to my nandroid backup of stock and it still the same. Is this a hardware problem? obviously a battery pull leads to the lights going out but as soon as i reboot its the same problem. Anyone have any ideas?
thanks again

haven't heard of anybody having this issue and i'm also on netarchy's kernel with stock rom and haven't experienced it.
i think you're on the right path, load up the stock rom and stock kernel, if you still experience the issue, it would appear to be more hardware related and i'd take it back to sprint.
if you don't experience the issue then you know it was probably triggered somewhere along the lines of customization. i'd customize again step by step checking along the way.
if you're technically inclined and feel adventurous, i'm pretty sure the backlight leds can be controlled thru the sysfs space and adb shell.
/sys/class/leds/button-backlight
all the control files are in there and you can experiment echo'n values to see if it turns them on/off and/or controls the brightness ...
best of luck!
Look in the market for an app called covedesign. It will allow you to turn off the bottom lights. Hope this helps.

you don't "edit" the files in a text editor ... you echo values to them.

FXP045 released, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16822404&postcount=4
Current Issues (FXP045) and unofficial fixes
Hardware keyboard layout scrambled - Old keyboard file is no longer in this ROM but appearently just pasting the old stock file (attached) to /system/usr/keychars/ fixes the layout. The included keyboard changer app force closes.
LEDs under soft keys Return and Menu - Replace /system/etc/hw_config.sh with the attached file.
Screen flicker upon turning on - New issue in fxp045.
can this work on Ray?
the flash does not work either
and the keyboard light does not work when use (when charging, it works)
and the max brightness is not very bright

I believe these fixes will work on Ray but you should find the stock values from Ray ROM because there probably are some differences.
Basically, only one issue you're having can potentially be fixed using SK17i fixes and that is max brightness by applying the fix for screen flicker. If you can't get a hold of Ray's stock values, try SK17's stock ones, but do a backup in recovery just in case.
thanks~

I'll be updating original post with results and updated files in a bit.
Edit: Unfortunately keyboard lighting stays on and not only when keyboard is closed but even when phone is locked. Which means, its lit at all times. Okay, there is a binary called slidercounter that or something similar sets a system var. If you take your dev Tools app and look unter Configuration there it is mentioned:
hardKeyboardHidden=2 <- if closed
hardKeyboardHidden=1 <- if opened
We now just have to find out where it occurs and if not we make a background script that ech0 x (100) or 0 into the node depending on the state.
But there must be a system process watching this we could use.
Don't hide, I'll find you anyway

did you look, if in ray the nodes under /sys are similar to the pro mini?
you can test using adb shell or terminal app cat'ing the node to see what's in it and echo'ing a number to see what happens.
You meant progress, didn't you
as I am using Scriptmanager anyway I made 2 oneliners besides the shebang that echo either 0 or 100 into the node called
liteon.sh
and
liteoff.sh
put the scripts into root of sdcard, start scriptmanager, choose liteon.sh and check run as root and save
Do this either way with liteoff.sh
Go to your Mangos Homescreen, add a widget, choose Script Manager and choose liteon.sh and in the next step liteoff.sh
You´ll have to Widgets, one puts light on, on off.
This is of course a workaround an will be implemented into lights module. Fxp knows about the fact already.

good job though
If I had more time I would have searched where the system keeps the var keyboardHiddenState or how it was called and build a condition of if it's open and not bright enough to switch in on/off
But how I understood fxp the fact about the light seems to be enough to get this working ..I hope so
new issue:
km launcher disturbes camera module.
I use the KM Launcher to determine which keyboard to use in which state.
Portrait: swype
Landscape: thumb keyboard
Keyboard open: hardware keyboard
This is a very cool application that worked perfectly on my rooted stock. If it is active the cam works in the cam app, but not in many other apps that use the cam, e.g. barcoo barcode scanner. I have to disable KM Launcher before using these apps. Hope it'll be fixed automatically in the next release.
I just cannot guess why that happens.

When I get home ill upload a video of it happening
Greeting everyone.
I recently got an Android and I also recently decided to root and stick a custom ROM on it. Everything went fine and dandy with that and I'm currently on Cryanogen 9 Alpha ROM (it's spectacular to say the least).
On the default ROM you could choose to turn off the key lights (I'm talking about the touch keys on both sides of "the master button"). However, neither does Cryanogen 7 or 9 offer me this option and because I'm so used to it, lights seem weird and unnecessary.
So, after searching the interwebz for a while, I couldn't find anything useful and hence my post.
Thanks in advance for any help given.
Furthermore, fantastic video!
Bump! (Too few characters apparently).

Thanks a bunch for the link.
I'll definitely give it a try when I have a bit of spare time.
EDIT: This script also requires BLN (which I talked about above) and after searching long and hard, I have found out that there is no ICS kernel with BLN support (while some others knew this, I certainly didn't).
After looking around further it seems that I/we won't get the feature for a while since BLN seems to be the only way apart from integration within the ROM (like it is within TouchWiz or CM7) that you can turn off your soft keys.
Latest build of CM9 has removed backlight!
'Tis a glorious day.

Wow, I've been looking for a way to disable the keys and while the script won't work for me messing with the settings did the job, that was my only issue so far. Cheers for the share. I'm using MIUI with siyah if anyone cares in order to make it work.
PS: games and movies look much better with no white lights :O
EDIT: Well, guess I was beat by the software had a notification during the night, and now the lights only stay off until the first time the screen gets turned off, after that they go back to their normal behaviour unless I reboot :|. On the look again for another way.
EDIT 2: Ok, I'm not giving up, for now I found yet another way for anyone interested (you need a BLN kernel however).
I installed BLN Control Pro, disabled everything and put BLN blinking: On and Led OFF time 3 minutes.
Now what I do is enter Test mode, turn the screen off and on, and now, the lights will be off for as long as I keep the program running. The only problem with this, is that BLN stops the phone from going into Deep Sleep, so I just need to remember to turn the test mode off and to disable BLN whenever I don't need the buttons off.
It's not a pretty solution but for now it's the best I could come up.
no setting for that
