[Q] Stock ROM doubt - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all!
If anybody can help me with simple doubts, I'd appreciate!
1- Stock ROM: an Android stock ROM is model dependent? So if I have an Android phone and want to install the stock version I have to find a ROM compatible or even made for the phone model I have? In case of a non branded phone (those chinese), which model is likely unknown, can I flash to a stock ROM?
2- An application is refusing to download from Market, because it says incompatible device (which is surprising since I thought any app would install, since it's Android). The developers told me that probably I have a moded version of Android system and they don't support it (!). How usually applications does this checking?
As you can see, my question 2 is related to question 1. I'm wondering if I can flash my device to a stock version of Android and get this application downloaded from Market (without blocking because it's considered incompatible).
Anyway I'd like to get answer for two questions independently, if possible
Just an update: I have two phones. One downloads this app without problem and in Market I see Maker=- and Model=P800W. The other one (which says incompatible device) Market=- and Model=-. This might be the problem.
Thanks!

Yes. The stock rom (or any rom) has to be made specifically for your device. If you don't know the model of your device, then find out. If you can't, then do NOT try to flash any rom. Your device will be bricked (if its the wrong rom).
You thought wrong. It doesn't matter that the system is android. It's the hardware and software version which matters. Many applications (like the great 3D games and powerful apps) require an armV7 instruction set processor. So if your device doesn't have this, you really can't do anything about it (legally). Applications check if they are compatible before they are installed. If they "find out" that they are not compatible, they will not install. On the the software side, many applications no longer support the older versions of android which could also cause the incompatibility.

Thank you!
Probably the biggest problem is that, for some reason, Market has no information on Maker and Model.
I just checked the model. It's a T8585. Is there anyway I can update this info on my device (maybe some variable in the system) so it will be correctly listed on Market?
The previous phone had Model listed as P800W and I had no problem to install the application.

Is your device an HTC HD2? Did a search and it's the only device shown. If it is an HD2, then just flash a new rom. That should fix it. There are system properties which can be changed, but changing them may cause your device to bootloop and you'll be in more problems.

It's a chinese one. Not exactly the specs of HTC HD2 (slower processor for example).
But there is a T8585 stamp on the back. If it's not the same processor, why list it as T8585... maybe the mainboard is the same? So a ROM made for HTC HD2 might work?

Post some images of it.

Attached.
My thoughts:
- I think this device should support the app I'm trying to install (including Skype). But, since it's showing "-" as Maker and Model on Market, some applications are blocked or don't work (because they don't validate the phone).
- T8585 means HTC HD2, right? But... some specs are different: slower CPU (mine is 416Mhz), worse camera (mine is 2MP), probably lower RAM (mine is 256mb). This way I still don't know why (or how) it's considered T8585 - maybe because the form factor or mainboard? The basic question is... what makes a phone T8585 (as we can see, not the processor). I would go with the mainboard as an anwer.
- If I find a stock ROM for this phone, probably Maker and Model would have a valid info? I think it should have at least T8585 listed as Model!
Thanks...!

That is an HD2....KNOCKOFF. That is an HD2 clone obviously made in China. Do NOT try flashing an HD2 rom. Since the specs are so weak, your device may bootloop or even be bricked. It won't be able to handle actual HD2 roms because of the ram and processor (and key mapping may be inaccurate). It's considered as a T8585 cause that's what the makers named it. Just like if you went to China, you would see many Iphones which are not actually Iphones. Some of them even have an Apple logo (maybe slightly different but hard to tell without great examination). If you find a stock rom for it (highly unlikely) then yes, it should give you info. Now that's why the apps said they are incompatible. With such weak specs, (and I doubt that will have an armV7 processor) then they wouldn't work well. You could try this app to get more info on your device: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bartat.android.elixir&feature=more_from_developer .

It seems to be armV5. MKT6516 processor.
I'll see what I find.
Thanks for all the help!

[Q] HTC HD2 Clone from China

I bought an HTC HD2 Clone from China (T Mobile). He is under WM 6.5 and I want to change the ROM. The problem is that I do not know if it's possible for this phone. In the Device Information I can read this:
BSP Version: ROM Version-V01.00; ROM Date-Sep 10 2010;BOOT Version-2010.08.01;PCB Version- V01.
In Radio Module: Serial Number: HT9BWNW00617; Revisin Data-2010.08.01; Model ID: T8585; Manufacturer-HTC.
In Hardware: CPU Model-QUALCOMM82...; CPU Speed-1024MHz; RAM Size-576MB; Nand Size-1024MB; Data Bus-32Bit; LCD Color-65536; Resolution-480x800.
It has not SD card but 8Go of Internal Memory. I can not find any information about Radio Version and I do not know if I can flash it. Can you help me, please?
I am pretty sure it lies about RAM and CPU .
No, you can't flash normal ROMs on it. You're gonna have to figure out the way to flash it (probably their tools?) and cook your own ROMs.

There are no tools to check it????
Try it out...
Well I do not know if it will work or not, but might be worth a try. Is to try a SD version of an Android build here. Try downloading the files and put them on the phones memory and then open android. The instructions are pretty simple for the installation and opening. I am currently using a build of AmericanDroid. It is pretty nice. I do not think it will brick the phone, because it does not self boot unless you download an app to make it do so. You will have to use a file explorer. I recommend using total commander. It might be worth a shot

I think the biggest issue is that if you have problems with flashing, there is no way to restore the stock ROM. I would not expect a flash to work, but one never knows with clones.

Haha... +1 for that...
But then again, if you´re new here... maybe the amount of information about HD2 here at xda is a bit confusing.
Here is the Android SD section: Click!
Of course, there is more information about how to do inside the HD2 Android section...

I am not stupid (I think) but I'd like to now if I can try to put Android System on my chinise clone, that's all. On my phone I can not find any info about the Radio version and I do not now if it is "changeable". In tne Android section I can not find this info and I do not want to post the same question there.

No one has posted anything for a Chinese clone that I am aware of. You are going to have to do the initial work yourself, using the instructions on how to update the "normal" HD2 to Android, then going from there. As I said before, the big problem in my view is what to do if the Android load fails. With the genuine HTC phone, you can simply flash the original ROM. Do you have a ROM file you could flash, in case the update goes bad?
When I looked at those phones, it was always with the assumption that if I ever bought one, whatever came with the phone would be IT - no upgrades possible unless they came from the same manufacturer.
just do it...
you should not need to worry about radio too much (other than you won't get the best working connection/wifi/battery usage/etc. without the proper and corresponding radio, but you can just load the android folder onto your 8gbs and hit the clrcad/haret & see what happens. Why'd you go with the knock-off? The original is worth the pennies.

If the clone is using different hardware it simply won't work; the drivers are built for the stock HD2. Then how does he get back to stock? Doesn't he have to install Maglor or something like that to work dual boot Android? (Sorry if I have names wrong, I don't do Android on my HD2).
This happened to me when I bought an HD2 from someone in the Atlanta area. They sent me an HD2 clone, I did some research and found that it's really not an HD2 but a phone made to look like an HD2. After some work with paypal and ebay I was able to get my money back. My best advice to you is send the phone back and get a real HD2.
HD 2 clone.
There are generally 3 types of HD2 clone:
single SIM, resistive screen
dual SIM, resistive screen (exactly what I have myself)
dual SIM, capasitive screen (rear camera hole is at different place if compare with original).
If you describe what you keep, probably, I could help you.
I rarely use 3G, and slow core provides me long life battery, dual SIM is very useful. Besides, I DO NOT like capasitive screen as I often use office software, that's why this clone is ideal for me! I've purchased standard size extended battery on Ebay and it lasts 4-5 days of regular usage. Yes, there are some issues with it: camera should be abt 3 MPx, you can't watch high bit-rate movies etc. But all other options are good enough!
Good luck!
I don't trust chinese clones. If u have enough money buy original phone.
HD2 CLone
Hello,
I'm a quitley happy owner of the HD2 Clone (CECT8585).I'm using it since a month, and it works very well with WM 6.5. I have a lot of program like Tom Tom 7 and accessories. Is fast and stable.Using Dual Sim does not kill the battery.Any way, I'm traing to use Androind on it.
I tryed in 2 ways.First one with FastRam android, secon one with double booth. Both gave me the same error.Just froze after loading CLRCAD/HARED in Linux loading Bar-
I thought It could be a Radio problem.I have the last version of the system wity resistive display. Any help from you side?
Thank you.
You have to roll-back, no other way to my mind!

[Q] Upgrading Android on a chinese tablet

Hello,
I would like to buy the cheapest tablet I can find. I found an eBay insertion featuring a Chinese tablet running Android 2.1.
While I wait for the seller to provide me (if known) some information about brand and model name to find more information about this device, I would like to ask a couple of questions that might sound stupid a little for you experts, but as I don't know much about the Android OS I'm still going to ask (if this was WinMo, I already knew the answer was NO)
1. Is it possible to upgrade Android to a newer version, ie. Gingerbread or even Honeycomb, on any device that supports it? Like, some kind of software upgrade tool? Or, how could somebody make an upgraded ROM without spending months in reasearching, experimenting and breaking?
2. Is it possible at least to root devices like the one I mentioned?
Thank you

[Q] Galaxy S3 clone. Please help a newbie who's willing to learn

Hey guys,
This is my 1st post here ever.
The only time I fiddled around with rooting an android phone was more than a year ago when I had an AT&T Samsung infuse. I followed very detailed instructions on how to root it and upgrade it. It worked like a charm and I'm so grateful to all of you experts trying to help newbies.
A friend of mine went to China last month and brought me a Samsung s3 clone.
The phone is factory unlocked BUT
1. It doesn't have the original google play application. It has a similar logo which leads to a Chinese app store.
2. Google mail account application is missing
3. The phone supports only Chinese, Korean and English languages. (I'd like to use it in different ones)
So I need to re-install a good Android version that has all the Android features that I'm missing
I thought it would be easy to find instructions on how to do it it here, but unfortunately I wasn't lucky to find a direct and clear step -by step instructions for my phone model
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-i9300
Model #: mtk6515_ics2
Android version: 4.0.4
Base band version: MAUI.11AMD.W12.22.SP.V14
Kernel Version: 3.0.13
[email protected]#1
Build Number: ALPS.ICS2.MP.V1.18
Custom Build Version: V15.12
Please help!
Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there? :crying:
Hey man,
unfortunately I don't think anyone can help you rooting/changing roms as it's a replica and there isn't a real development for it.
BUT as for the play store you can DL the apk directly from here:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/05/14/download-latest-google-play-store-4-1-6/
As for the phone language, after installing the google play store look for:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.c_lis.ccl.morelocale&hl=en
and choose the language of your wishing. That is in case that your phone supports it.
If you mean by google mail account the gmail app then in that case:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...ith-slide-out-navigation-and-brand-new-inbox/
BTW for future references - try to make a search for yourself I'm sure you could've find those in less than a minute
Cheers.
Thanx
Thanx a lot for your effort and concern.
I downloaded the latest google play apk, I installed it, but it wasn't working apparently because "google login service" and "google services framework" were missing too!
So I downloaded them, but they needed to be installed in system/apps.
I downloaded "root explorer" which should help me accessing the system folder.
I copied&pasted the apps in system/apps but a message says "your phone should be rooted first in order to paste" came out.
So back to square1
On the other hand, I tried to disactivate some of the annoying Chinese applications that came with the system using "root app delete", and guess what?
I get the same message that I should root this phone first.
So how can I root this bloody thing???
Yeah that is sounds pretty frustraing..Well I guess you won't find here a "how to root s3 replica" guide and personally I wouldn't try and rooting the device as it could easily brick it.
I suggest you go to the store and tell them that you've got a phone with no option to download apps, or connect to your Google account...
Hope you'll sort things up with the store soon

I wish I could follow your advise. The shop is 4000 miles away in China.
There is a google store app installed, but it's fake. It has a similar icon but with different proportions. The problem is that it's in Chinese and it deals with chinese applications.
Oh that is unreachable, but maybe can you contact them via Email etc..?
Anyways I found this thread I think you'll see it much more beneficial than my help as I don't have experience on rooting replicas and it's focused on your device:

If you flash recovery from different device, there's a big chance you brick it
Try to use MTKDroidTools to root it, its pretty safe.
As @lolet said correct, you can possibly brick your phone...
That's why I advise you to ask in the thread I've linked onto, there are fellows there with much more experience than myself with rooting your device.
I guess in the last couple of years I've flashed hundreds of times but only on samsung, htc and motorolas.
Cheers

[Q] What version of Android do I REALLY have?

I just purchased a Doogee Collo DG100 cell phone from China. The specs posted by the manufacturer are obviously inflated (as expected), but I'm still very happy with the device. I'm just wondering if there is a way to verify which version of Android the phone is actually using. My last china phone stated it was using v4.1, but in actuallity it was v2.3 -- this new phone states it's using v4.2.2, but I noticed it's using Flash Version 11.1.111.9 which is for Android 2.x and 3.x. Is it safe to assume the operating system is not 4.2.2 even though that's what is displayed in the About page??? I've googled everywhere for ways to verify the OS version, but I've found nothing. Hoping someone here might be able to help.
Thanks!

Need help finding the stock ROM for my off-brand phone?

I have a phone that's off-brand, from a chinese company I believe with the brand "JHM" on the back.. It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop and the ROM that came factory installed on it has adware built in and it slows down the phone tremendously.. I have a screenshot of my phone model info attached if anyone can point me in the right direction of the stock ROM for my phone.. I appreciate any replies and help, thanks!

The issue with these off brand China phones is that they never release the software for their devices. As the software is normally never what it says it is (just like the hardware) so you maybe out of luck.
