Wow HalfevilDruid! Thanks so very much For the Kiddie Zip file! I was about to flash my photon to cricket tommorow as my 2 year Sprint contract was up yesterday. I was half a mile away from a 4g wimax tower and couldn't get high speed Sprint 4g. I was stuck on slow speed 3g. somewhere between 100-200 kbps. Thanks to the japanese radio firmware i was able to put in a At&t sim card and get HDSP+ internet! Somewhere between 4-6 Mbps! O yeah, just some info. I unlocked my bootloader and installed Jokers CM9 ICS. By the way I live over here Between Phoenix and Tucson AZ. USA!

I picked up a prepaid sim card @ the Local AT&T store for 5.00. Then I went with a 25.00 payasyougo plan for 1000 minutes. Then another 25.00 for 1Gb of smartphone data. Today I ordered a 15.00 at&t compatible prepaid Sim card from straighttalk.com. I'm thinking about trying out There 45.00 monthly unlimited talk, messaging, data plan. Pretty cool, huh! I went from 110.00 a month to like 50.00 monthly, no contract!

Sorry but Straight Talk isn't unlimited data. There are numerous threads all over the web were people have had there data service shut off for using over 2-3GB/mo. The general consensus is that if you stay below 100MB/day you reasonably safe. I gave my Photon to my parents and they watched a netfix movie when they got it and had their data shut off the first day for excessive use. Yeh it sucks but it's still a better deal than what you get with AT&T prepaid.
Yeah it's still a better deal than AT&T where you only get 1 gig of data and limited minutes for about 50 bucks?
I could live with a 2-3 gig monthly cap, but they shut down data on a daily basis? That's pretty BS.

Actually more providers than folks realize do this. I have been in the theater, computer, tv, internet and phone business over 15 years and most of them have a fair access policy. Some will let you use all you want and if you consistently use of your cap they will notify and increase your monthly plan to compensate. Others will wait til you hit the cap each month and throttle you to a crawl, and some will break it into a daily limit and throttle you when its hit until the next day. Always ask or read what the FAP is before signing up!

you check out strait talk? they resell AT&T service and I think it's like $45 monthly for unlimited everything. don't quote me on that though. I read that a long while back.
IMO.. if your grandfathered in at ~90.. unlimited everything then I wouldn't dump it.. I've had all services and I would say Att is only 2nd to Verizon.. and just barely.. I am with Sprint now which I would say is on par with ATT but the unlimited everything for 99 is what keeps me. I guess it depends on your usage though.. if you never go over 2gb or 3gb a month in Data then you probably won't miss anything.. only thing is Att carries most popular phones.. along with exclusivity with the NOTE and if you love the Note then everything else will fall short..
I'm using Straight-Talk with my Note and its pretty good for what you pay for $45 I dont know at what gb they throttle at but I've had service for around two weeks and I'm at least 1.5gb.
How does the straight talk prepay thing work? just pay for the card and slap the sim in and it works? Does the Note have to be unlocked or rooted? Is it using att or tmobile?
It would be on Cingular/AT&T towers, no root or unlock needed. Buy the Sim for 15 and the unlimited card for 45. Its like a 63 dollar bill total. Specify AT&T phone and regular not micro Sim... Plug and play except the son change but its like 5 entries in son... Easy stuff and same coverage...ISH. No lte though

Im thinking about this one too sounds like i might get better service on this than on Straighttalk but since Im going off contract I'll probably try both to see which is better.
If your grand fathered unlimited you should just stay with them til they get wont honor your unlimitted. Just my opinion.
Do you get 4g service or 3g.... I know you said you don't get lte.....

You would only get 3G or hspa+ speeds on Straight Talk
straight talk
i think i will go with the straigh talk. i kinda of did a bit of research and i also saw that i could switch to tmobile by flashing a custom rom that allows me to have the radio for tmobile, but thats too much hastle. i dont really like att they a-holes i used to have the 4s and everymonth id get the "you'r using too much data" and thy would drop my speeds to .14mb, in my area lte is not great the best speed i usually get between work and home are 3-5 mbs so speed is not really a big deal for me.
You'll get capped on straight talk also... Heed my warning. Tether when absolutely necessary, and try to actually use less data. Be aware of data and this won't happen.

I have the SGH-I777 and thing is I don't call nor text that much. Before I got this phone I had an old LG with a prepaid Tracfone SIM card. Price per minute is very expensive when compared to a good monthly plan, but on a yearly basis it's actually way cheaper for someone who calls or texts very little. A 400 minute Tracfone card is valid for a year, and that is enough for me. I paid $60 and my minutes were doubled. But the Tracfone SIM card is not compatible with the SGH-I777 and I do need to switch to another company.
Which is the best pay-as-you-go plan for, say, a year period?
thanks!
A quick search online and I found these two plans:
-T-Mobile
$100 card (1000 mins for a year - if you have any mins left, you just buy a $10 card before the year period ends, and your minutes will be good for another year). 10c per call, 10c per text.
H2O
$100 card (2000 mins - don't know if they do the rollover thing). 5c per call, 5c per text.
I'm not completely sure, but I think H20 and T-Mobile SIM cards are compatible with the SGH-I777.
You could try Straight Talk. 45 a month for everything. You just buy a sim through them 15.00. Straight Talk uses ATT towers or you could get a T mobile sim. You need a Walmart around you so you can get a card to activate your monthly plan. It works great for me!! its 47 and change a month after taxes for me. Im in Michigan. Search for the Straight Talk thread in here. It has lots of info in it.

That's right. That's a good monthly plan, but it comes to $550 yearly, and I don't think I would use 20% of that amount. A good yearly plan ($100) seems reasonable to me, even if the actual texting and calling is expensive when compared to any good monthly plan.
H2O seems to be better than T-Mobile (more minutes for the same $100) but I don't know if their coverage is better than T-Mobile's.
As a Vibrant owner, I'm of course using t-mobile. My 2 year contract is up, and I want to pay the lowest amount. I barely use my call minutes, and want unlimited texts and data. What plan should I go with?
The Tmobile site makes this confusing, because I see a $30per month plan with unlimited texts and date, and 100 minutes, but I can't switch to it.
That's because its prepaid.
For now I'm on T-Mobile prepaid $30, 1500 voice/text combo and 30mb data.
Not much data but I always use WiFi.
$49.99.
Classic plan?
500 Minutes, Unlimited (2GB 4G) data & Unlimited texts? :|
The online $30 plan is a special online only and I believe requires a new prepaid phone or acct/number.
I currently use unl talk text and data with first 100mb at 3/4g. I have gone over the 100mb a few times and don't really notice any decrease in speed. There is a $45 unl talk text and data from Walmart straight talk. They use tmo and at&t. You just have to get a sim that works on tmo from them. This will also require unlocking and a new number.

I don't know the prices, but you could try simple mobile if they're in your area. It's the gsm equivalent of metro/cricket. I believe they run off t mobile towers too. You might have to unlock it though.
100 minutes unlimited text and 5 GB 4g plan does exist. It's only available at Walmart! Google it. I have Simple Mobile $40 unlimited everything plan for about a year and it's decent, but network speeds are about 120 kbps...SM also has a $50 unlimited full 4g speed plan

Yeah, I'm doing the switch next month to this but be forewarned, if you use Wi-Fi calling, it still counts against your allotted 100 minutes. I did some research on this a couple days ago and you could add another 1500 minutes (I think) for $10 extra. You can't beat that deal
OP here. I made my switch today, and something funny happened.
I went to the TMobile store, told them my 2-year contract was up, and I want to be on a monthly plan. The store representative asked, "why?" and I told him I'd rather pay $50 per month than $90. He was confused and said I had to call customer service to switch. Whatever.
I got back home, called customer service, and they transferred me to a call center which based on the accent and forced "Americanisms" is probably in India. Just to see if I could get away with it, I told them I wanted the $30 per month plan, which is supposed to only be for new accounts. The rep on the phone said OK, and now I pay $30 per month for 100 voice minutes, and unlimited text and data!
woohoo!
That's a good plan. The first 5gb at 3/4g speed, then they throttle back however I have the $50 unl talk+texts and 100mb data @3/4g. I go over 100mb all the time and rarely notice speed reduction except for downloading large files, but that's what WiFi is for.

1. order prepaid sim:
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit
2. when it arrives in mail, activate it here:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/ActivateCodes.aspx
Just follow activation steps and when you get to step 3 "Select your plan and services" there will be special for $30 plan with unlimited web and 100 mins.
I have no problems switching to that plan myself online. I did buy a prepaid sim card from a real tmobile store. They told me I could switch plans myself later on so I bought it, prepaid sim can go to other prepaid plans as well as contract plans (not that I would but that's what they said)
I've been on walmart's Family Mobile almost a year and have no complaints.
I came from att and was able to port my numbers. They were working by the time I got to my car.
My wife and I are considering switching to T-Mobile when our Verizon contract runs out in June (tired of paying $100+ more a month for Verizon, especially since I have a funny feeling our grandfathered unlimited is on borrowed time). Right now I'm running an unlocked, rooted VZW Note II running CleanROM 4.5. Is there a way to permanently flash the phone over to T-Mobile (radios) if we decide? I really want the AWS bands so I'm not gimped with EDGE speeds as I am today (running the VZW radios/firmware).
So...is this possible?
Thanks!
No not really. You could try this link below. I've pmed the Dev (i pulled the Verizon qcn he needed) and he said it may work, but if not just restore the backup you make before.
Having said that I'm making the same switch and I've decide to sell my note, buy at mobile one under contract,(200 on there website right now) then pay the 200 to switch to a value plan.
So I'll pay 400 for a t mobile note and have the 50 unlimited plan. I can easily sell mine for 500 to 550 so I'll make 100 bucks

South Carolina and they're fine here. Obviously not as good as Verizon, but i stay in the city 90 percent and on my wife's t mobile note they're great. In NC she had better signal then I did. On a plus side they're customer service is a million times better then Verizon could dream about being. I'd switch just for that

Bid on a new Verizon Note II for $470. So how does the T-Mobile purchase & ETF work? As far as I remember you will need to pay tax over full price (not discounted) plus tax for ETF as well. Please let me know how it goes (actually money you'll need to spend for your plan). Thanks.
verizon's note II will accept a t-mobile microsim and work as a phone right away. you'll have to root it to add the proper apn for edge data, and you'll get t-mobiles 3g on the farmed 1900 bands.
here in SoCal, i get 3g about 70% of the time

So aside from being locked into 2g if you aren't in a reframed 19900 band location does txt and mms work normally? Im primarily on wifi 95% of the time and switching out to TMO would save me over $100/mo for 2 lines I have with VZW. I popped in a TMO microsim but it wasnt an active one the network so all I got was the "welcome to tmobile" prompt for programming.
Using Jellybeans 13 with APN Editor hack. It picked up the GSM and correct APN from what I saw.
Yes it is possible to take your Note 2 from VZW to T-Mobile, Switched weeks ago
Yes it is possible, I've been running on a T-Mobile custom ROM now for the last 8 weeks and going back & forth between VZW and Solavei (T-Mobile).I have been running the Tweaked 1.5 and just recently it updated to Tweaked 1.6 both are for the T-Mobile Note2 sch-T889.
It has been flawless and I never pass up the opportunity to brag about this and show it off to both Verizon customers and T-Mobile customers
as well. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is the best Android handset I've ever owned... It will a pretty Awesome Android handset to even come close to the Note2's abilities and excellent engineering.. So a huge Thank You to Samsung and hey "Verizon Suck It" your rule of consumer manipulation and robbery will come to an end one day.... Jerks

Oops missed this. I paid 278 plus tax at Walmart then 200 fee plus tax so like 500 for a brand new phone.
We did great for my wife. 278 plus tax, but got a50 gift card. Then 200 fee, but called them and they waived it. Something about a remorse wave. So 250 basically. I'm waiting for my bill with fee to see if theyll do it again.
By the way with my discount I pay 85 for unlimited everything! Coverage is no where near Verizon, but what do you expect. But the big issue is wifi calling. In the hospital I work no one gets service, but me!

How did your wife get such a great deal? Could you please share some technique to let them waive the ETF? If that works then I'll definitely grab one or two. Thanks.
The gift card was just a promo Walmart was running. There fee there really isn't atip. When my first bill came in it had the 200 fee, and two months of service (done weird way it billed after getting my discount put on).
I just called and explained I switched from Verizon to save money and asked if they could discount some of these fees. I was hoping for activation fee waived and maybe a small percent off. Instead she said she could refund the 200

Bid on a new Verizon Note II for $470. So how does the T-Mobile purchase & ETF work? As far as I remember you will need to pay tax over full price (not discounted) plus tax for ETF as well. Please let me know how it goes (actually money you'll need to spend for your plan). Thanks.

Thank you for the information.
I took my phone to one of the repair store. They didn't have to root the phone and they are still able to add the new APN.
I can surf the web now. However, the picture text message is not working. Do you how to fix it? Can you please help?
Best Regards,

No not really. You could try this link below. I've pmed the Dev (i pulled the Verizon qcn he needed) and he said it may work, but if not just restore the backup you make before.
Having said that I'm making the same switch and I've decide to sell my note, buy at mobile one under contract,(200 on there website right now) then pay the 200 to switch to a value plan.
So I'll pay 400 for a t mobile note and have the 50 unlimited plan. I can easily sell mine for 500 to 550 so I'll make 100 bucks

And the 50 dollar unlimited only gives you 500 mb data. Realistically unlimited talk, text, and data will be 70 a month. Or you can get 2.5 gigs of data for 60 per line. I just left t-mobile, be prepared that your service will not work indoors in a lot of places as they don't not have. Low frequency like Verizon and att. Plus you will run into a lot of dead zones if you travel. Otherwise it is a really cheap plan. I just can't stand paying for a phone and unable to use it for half a day.

Even though this thread is like, 6 months old, I thought I would add my .02.
I recently purchased a GoPhone sim for AT&T prepaid. $60 month unlimited talk/text & 2gb data. I am getting HSPA+ speeds with my Verizon GN2. While it is NOWHERE near the LTE speeds I get on Verizon, it is also 1/2 the cost. plus, if needed, I can purchase extra data at $10 per gig. I average 2-3gb per month now, & my plan with unlimited data, 900 texts & 1000 minutes is $112.
If I sell my Verizon phone & buy a AT&T N2, I will get LTE with GoPhone.
Tried tmobile for 3 hours with a brand new note 2 and demanded refund. The service was awful... I mean horrible. Picked up a used note 2 and stayed with vzw. Worst phone experience ever. Run far away from tmobile.
I was a bit impatient and jumped the gun and bought the ONE at Walmart for $148 with a 2 year contract. But already during my first week I realize I'm using up my minutes rather quickly and being limited kinda sucks.
I definitely want to keep the phone cause its flawless and I keep reading about other peoples flawed phone and I already added SquareTrade insurance.
I was thinking of paying the early termination fee of $325 which makes the phone only $473 which is cheaper than I could get it from TMobile.
Question is would I be able to add this phone to T Mobile prepaid plans and not be stuck on Edge network for data?

Depends if you're in a refarmed market. I live in one and I get mostly HSPA+ (4G) with pockets of Edge.
Does anyone know if the At&t HTC one will get Ota updates if you use t-mobile?

Why not just use straight talk for $45/month get unl everything with 2gb of data? should be amble. AND the best part is that your still on the ATT network and dont have to worry about being on 2G if not in 1900 refarmed area which is hard to find these days

Don't do it - the data speeds on at&t through Straight Talk are HORRENDOUSLY capped - I had them for over a year where I didn't have T-Mobile coverage... An absolute headache! Most of the at&t MVNOs truly suck if you want data... I've heard of people not being speed capped on Red Pocket though.

Really? Their plan is $60 for unl everything with 2GB of data. I think he is planning to SAVE money with the $45 plan otherwise he would have went with ATT from the start
$45 and $60 for the same allotment.. which one sounds better?

Go read the horror stories about the capped data speeds on Straight Talk. I'll give you a great example. My dad did a speed test right next to me, both of us around -90dBm on HSPA... I shot up to 3Mbps and then was slammed down to around 800kbps consistently while he was running upwards of 8 and 9 on the downstream... Even further evidence of the cap? My upstream was 1900Kbps and his was 1950. Both of us using Captivates, same radio, same ROM. Only difference is he had post-paid at&t (and thus was able to use at&t's postpaid APN).
But by all means, its worth a try - no contract and all - good luck dealing with customer service to get your phone working in the first place though, they are worse than Sprint. :good:
Another option to consider is VoIP... If you have a Google Voice number, you can set up SIP. Its not the easiest thing in the world to do but you get unlimited calls... There are many different SIP solutions in the Play Store.

Well, at the end of the day you get what you pay for right? If cost is not a concern to you then go with att and if it is then go with straight talk.
Better yet, why not just switch to T-mobile?

I learned my lesson the hard way with Straight Talk but if he takes his One and puts it on T-Mobile, he will be on EDGE most of the time unless he's in a refarmed 1900MHz area or has LTE. at&t's version doesn't support HSPA over AWS.

Yes I'm a cheapo...I'm paying $69.99 for 450mins and 3GB of data. I'm using Google Voice for text because AT&T wants an extra $20 for text and unlimited mobile calling. :crying: To AT&T's credit, the network is the best I've been on.
But yes, i'm looking for a cheap plan...I was thinking T-mobile's $50 prepay

If you are looking to save over the long term, return the AT&T model and get the T-Mobile model... you can use it with Straight Talk (T-Mobile BYOD) or with direct T-Mobile. T-Mobile is the only way to get LTE though. You get a larger data bucket with ST but you're limited to HSPA+... its really all a matter of what you need.
Solavei might be a good option too, especially if you have good T-Mobile service in your area - they will knock 20 bucks a month off their 49 dollar fee for every 3 people you get to sign up with Solavei, for as long as they keep their service.

They are rolling out their network insanely fast. OpenSignal has T-Mobile LTE showing up all over the place. Obviously test towers but they are going to flip the switch on the most advanced LTE network, something nobody else can say!
The simple and correct way to this mess is to just frikin use the same carriers data as matched to that carriers branded device .Using att phone on tmobile or vise versa just never cuts it ,unless you want 2g more so than not... And you want to render the phones capabilitys useless and waist your money on 2g ,This should only be done out of desperation, say like if your phones broke and it's a temp solution.
