Foreign Language Character Fonts - How To Add - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Unfortunately Android does not yet support certain foreign language characters out-of-the-box. For example, I need to have Armenian character support.
I thought I would re-post the steps I've followed to add the necessary support.
1. You must obtain ROOT.
2. Download DejaVu fonts. (attached)
3. Extract the file DejaVuSans.ttf and save it as DroidSansFallback.ttf
4. Copy the file DroidSansFallback.ttf to the root directory of your SD card.
5. Enter the following terminal commands. I use adb shell, but there are other ways of course.
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
cp -rf /sdcard/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
reboot
Note, the exact path of the sdcard may vary from device to device. Check the properties of the file from the device itself to confirm its exact location.
Hope this helps!

Then i installed terminal emulator and typed the specific code starting with su .The phone restarted and i pressed and kept pressing the 3 buttons (power+vol. down+home) but no menu apeared. I did the procedure 10 times but the menu didn't apeared. Am i doing something wrong or my pfone is brocken?
Did u copy paste all commands at once?
I did it manually tiping it by hang on my phone. I didn't coppy the text from my computer.
seems you didnt unzip the two recovery image files. Check it.
I unzipped all the files the image file, the recovery file, everithing. And i coppyedboth the zipped and the unzipped files
I checked it again and i have ony one recovery file and not 2... Which is the second recovery file?
Read this, I just instructed another user on how to upgrade to version 1.2 of the custom recovery. You should install it too. You will find links to the two files and the commands to type in the terminal.
Good luck!
flash_image.zip ??
I have flash_image zipped and unzipped
Use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971245
when i type the code it says:
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
cannot create system/binflash_image: read-only file system
# chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
# mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
# mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/LGp500-recovery-v12.img
# reboot recovery
Use what I told you and forget about those lines !
Try copy paste each command one by one....
I did just like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971245 but an error apeared: "windows cannot find groot.exe". I saw that there was anotxer member with the same problem but i didn't understood how to fix it.

[q] problem editting build.prop

cannot edit build.prop. i get an error when trying to edit it with es file explorer (there was an error when trying to save this file.)
any help? ive edited it before, but i dont know how. im pretty sure i did it this way but im not sure why its not saving properly this time.
running calk+clemsyn rom/kernel combo.
thanks!
Copy it to another folder edit the copy and then move the edited file in the correct folder.
tried that already, didnt work. got another error
I use Root Explorer to do any editing.
Any other suggestions? I'd rather not have to pay for it

If the build.prop you want to edit is in /system, then you'll have to mount /system read-write before you can modify any files there:
Code:
$ su [I]Become superuser. Prompt will change to '#'.[/I]
# /system/xbin/mount -w -o remount /system
[I]Edit the file[/I]
# /system/xbin/mount -r -o remount /system
You must have the Superuser app from Market and busybox installed on the gTablet for the commands to work. If you can't edit the file in ES File Explorer because of permission errors, copy the file into /mnt/sdcard via the command line, edit it there (or on the PC after removing the card), then move it back into place in /system and restore the old permissions:
Code:
$ cp /system/build.prop /mnt/sdcard/.
[I]a) The build.prop file in /mnt/sdcard should be editable now in ES File Explorer.
Edit the file, then do:
OR
b) Unmount the SD card via Settings > Storage, then remove the SD card and
edit the file elsewhere. Plug it back in, and, after it mounts do:[/I]
$ su
# /system/xbin/mount -w -o remount /system
# /system/xbin/mv /mnt/sdcard/build.prop /system/build.prop
# chown root.root /system/build.prop
# chmod 644 /system/build.prop
# /system/xbin/mount -r -o remount /system
All this is much easier through adb if you have that setup.
Note: Do not type the prompts--the '$' and '#' characters--in; they're just there to tell you what the Terminal screen should look like.

Did you have ES file explorer in Root mode?
In Es file explorer
Settings->Root Options -> both boxes checked, (HiAPK mode for first box)
I usually copy the file to sdcard and modify it, get ES explorer in root mode and copy it back. Do a backup before, in case you mess it up.
I usually use a terminal in su mode for editiing/copying, but that might not be needed.

Try
Code:
/system/xbin/mv /mnt/sdcard/build.prop /system/build.prop
instead of plain 'mv'. The default Android mv command is idiotically implemented. (See this post if you're interested in the details):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13956585&postcount=4
Using 'cp' command instead of 'mv' should also work; this way, you'll also have a backup of build.prop in /mnt/sdcard/.

Thanks, I tried two other applications and they didn't work. Was able to edit with Root Explorer. didnt fix the Netflix playback. Bummer.
***** changing the Nexus S to HTC Vision and samsung to HTC did the trick.
Root explorer will work, and is a great app. Worht the money.
Also, ADB from a PC will work as well. Just install the android sdk and use ADB.
From windows cmd prompts the commands are just adb remount (to remount as root) then "adb pull /system/build.prop" (this will pull it to the sdk platform-tools folder that adb.exe is in) and then edit to your hearts delite.
"adb push build.prop /system/build.prop" to send it back.
I was able to use ES File System by unchecking the Mount File System option in the Root options menu and then rechecking it. I imagine that it forced a remount of the file system in a writable mode.
This worked on our nabi big tab hd24
We now have true multiuser, where everyone has their own login, files, emails, bookmarks, web history, etc; as it should be.
I first did a factory reset, then installed kingo root, then another reset, did the build prop edit this suggested (es file explorer did not work) but build prop editor did....
We now have the nabi big tab hd 24 running as our primary desktop workstation computer...
No we just wish for a room update to be made available with the latest version of Android.
4.4.2 is getting old, and as is common little manufacturer long term support...

How to Overwrite the hosts file

Hi Guys,
im looking for a way to Overwrite the Hosts File on
system/etc/
There is anyway to push the file inside an APK to this directory.
Or write a raw directly in the hosts file without root a device.
Thanks in advance.
This only works with Root!
Use a terminal emulator like this one:
Link
then you type in the following:
Code:
su
cd /system/etc
cp "location of the host file you want to overwrite the original with" hosts
Questions or Problems Should Not Be Posted in the Development Forum
Please Post in the Correct Forums
Moving to Q&A
/system should be on a ro partition, so after becoming root you also have to enable rw on it
with the terminal given above, type
#mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/$YOURBLOCK /system
where $YOURBLOCK is the /dev/block association given by the kernel. To find it just give a
#mount | grep /system
and change the first command accordingly

[Q] Deleting system file in terminal causes reboot

Hello all,
I'm trying to delete a system file using the Android terminal (as my end goal is to put it in a run shell task in Tasker) and it either reboots my phone or just doesn't delete.
Long story short, I'm using the Weak Sauce root method, but I do not have S-Off as I like how easy it is to undo the Weak Sauce root alone. This means, of course, I don't have immediate RW access to system. So here's what I've done:
Code:
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p46 /system
# busybox rm -f /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg
# mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p46 /system
When I do the first and last commands alone, the system mounts as RW and RO correctly, confirmed with # mount|grep system. But that middle command is the problem. Sometimes nothing will happen, other times my phone will reboot. I've also tried adding the following before the rm command with no success:
Code:
# chmod 777 /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg
I AM able to delete the file manually through ES File Explorer when mounted RW. But it comes back after I restart my phone, hence why I want this command to be used in Tasker.
What am I doing wrong?
PS: as for the "why" of deleting the shutter sound file, I take screenshots sometimes and the sound drives me nuts. I've tried removing the ogg file from the camera apk, but that didn't work after a reboot. I also tried replacing the ogg file with a silent one, but no success there either as the real one reloads itself when I restart.
Oh, and full disclosure, I also posted this in the M8 forum. I'm putting it here hoping more people see it and can help!
