[Q] General kernel question - DEVICE SPECIFIC! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All!
I have a question for anyone with kernel knowledge, specifically in the area of COM port settings.
I am a part-time dev on the HTC Kaiser (tilt), and we have it running fairly smooth. My one gripe right now is that I don't know where to look for GPS settings, especially the ones pertaining to port address settings.
The Kaiser uses 9600baud non-parity with 8 stop bits. I'm not getting the correct communication betwen the sattelites and the reciever (phone GPS).
The phone will recieve up to 8 sattelites at a time, but never get a lock on a position or even show that the phone is located anywhere.
What I'd like to do is to fix the GPS issue and send a patch out to those having problems with it. I thought it may have something to do with the sattelites updating their RTCs' as was the case with older GPS units, but this isn't the case. We're dealing with a handful of cases across the planet (maybe 15-20% around the world).
Any direction or help is greatly appreciated!

Best Custom ROM for (att) HTC Fuse for GPS & WiFi

I want to set up my new (att) HTC Fuse to run satellite based GPS with internal maps and WiFi Internet connections. I do not want to pay for the att GPS or data plans. I want to use the internet through WiFi at home or at hotspots without using att by mistake and receiving data charges accordingly. In addition, what is the best GPS software: Tom Tom, Garmin or some other? It is fine with me to load all the maps on the SD card and run independent of Google Maps. A large 'Points of Interest' database is also desirable.
First of all, your questions have been answered numerous times and this is not the thread for these questions. In fact your subject does not match with the contents. However, below are my suggestions:
It's better to call ATT customer service to cancel your data plan so that you dont accidentally use the data plan. There are also cabs that
can be used to disable the data plan.
TomTom or Garmin . it's upto you. However, beware of the fact that there is very noticable lag in fuze-gps.
I myself do not use data plan and have been using FuzeGPS as far as I can.
Regarding the custom ROM - you can use any of the custom ROM as each has been catered to serve different taste.
I am in the exact same situation as you... the first thing I have to say to you is READ... Read & Do NOT post (and especially do not start a new thread for something like this)!
That being said, the NRG ROM Series by NRGZ28 (MAKE SURE YOU HARDSPL!) is what I personally use on my fuze, and Tom Tom 7 would be my recommended Nav software. That being said, with both of us being in the US, it might be a bit hard to get your hands on. Even more so with the proper maps. If you need help getting your hands on Tom Tom, let me know.... ALSO-- FIND, Download, & Install Modaco's NoData.... the stock ATT Rom WILL CONNECT to the internet even if you don't want it to. ATT's explanation is that "it is a primary data, secondary voice device." Don't end up like me with $50 in data charges at the end of the month just because of the stock ROM. You can also remove the password under connections and manually key it in when you are sending / recieving a MMS (the password is cingular).
What does the poll have to do with your questions?
For the data usage, I agree about downloading the NoData cab, it works great.
For the ROM, there's lots out there and all of them will work. Its best to look at what's included and figure out what has the stuff you'll use.
WiFi works fine in all of the ROMs.
GPS is where it could get a little tricky. Since you don't want to use data, then you'll have to disable aGPS (since March 1st, most ROMs have it enabled I think because of the AT&T fix). This will cause your cold fix time to take longer.
As far as GPS software, I like Garmin the best. Its just like a Nuvi unit and the maps are the most up-to-date for my area, especially compared to TomTom.

Thanks for your quick reply.
Obviously I am new to this forum (I registered last month), but I have spent MANY hours searching and reading many threads on this very interesting site. My questions have not yet been answered well enough to make a decision. I have read good things and bad things about almost every issue. Some guys say the stock ROM is horrible, some say it is great and every thing works wonderful after simply eliminating the att bloatware. Some say stay away from cooked ROMs and some say it is the only way to go. Obviously your research has answered these simple questions for you which others also may find helpful. If you can, please post some of the thread links that answer these questions in a more definitive fashion than my research has found. By the time I read four or five pages of most of the threads I found in my search there were so many contradictions and varied results that it became a little confusing, hence I was hoping for some simple answers that I hoped would be of interest to me and others with similar questions. I assumed there was more than Garmin and Tom Tom out there, but if not, I agree they are both probably good choices.
Thanks again for your comment – David.

Dude,
If you have an ATT Fuze, Why are you polling about the iphone, win-mo, and palm OS's? I'd Semi-understand the poll if you were undecided about which phone to go buy but you just picked up an ATT Fuze. The Fuze runs on WinMo and you're on a Forum that mostly works with phones that run Windows Mobile yet you're going to poll and ask about which smartphone OS is better?
If this poll has anything to do with a purchase of a phone, go to something like CNET.com or another electronic review site to find your answers.
I'm not trying to flame you but i'm struggling to understand how your poll and HOW that has anything to do with your question that you're posting?
Anyways, its a preference. I know it gets confusing to read all the pages about all the ROM's that are posted but i'm going to tell you, its all about what YOU want and it has nothing to do with anyone elses opinions. If i were you, i'd go flash every ROM and see which one works out for me. There are compromises but you really need to go through it yourself and see which one works out best for you. There is NO PERFECT ROM for this phone as the phone itself isn't perfect. As for your navigation needs, go find "iGo" for windows mobile. I'm not sure why people get business oriented phones if they don't want to spend money on a data package because the data capabilities and business oriented software is what makes these phones different than a regular cell phone. I still don't see a point in the poll but good luck.

I accidently hit the 'Poll' button and couldn't back out of it. I should have started over with a new post, but I made up the poll to fill the blanks instead. My vote is for WinMo. Thanks for asking - David.

GPS on MR2? How-to? After reading 1092 posts I felt....

.... if there IS a working solution, it should be in a place in black and white, and should be a sticky (rather than reading through what is now a mess of good information).
If anyone has the patience to read and decipher the huge topic on MR1 or already knows the answer, please post it. I'm at my wills end already.

I had this working on my XV6800 (VZW) in the past on both MR1 and MR2. I followed the directions in the posts in the main GPS thread. The two things that I did slightly differently that worked for me and one or two others I noticed was that I did have to install VZ Navigator and once or twice I had to tweak the registry settings for the AGPS settings (server's changed IPs, etc). After that it did work. However, I did have problems with the GPS not locking at times unless I did a soft reset. Since then i've moved onto custom ROMs and getting GPS to work was much easier and I don't have to soft reset to get it to work, it works all the time and locks within 5-10sec.
Post in here what you've tried or PM me and I can try to help.

FroYo 7.1, HTC TP2 Rhodium and BT

Can't post this in the forum it belongs, so I'm asking here; using the latest itineration (FRX 7.1), the only real problems/bugs/still being worked on; are these
1. BT constantly cycles on/off
2. USB OTG to transfer files doesn't work.
3. Can't remember the 3rd.
Are there work-arounds for these, or are they still being ironed out.
If this wasn't the right place to ask, please direct me to the right place.

Your best bet is to try and build your post count with constructive stuff, like helping other people in general and Q&A sections, and then when you've got enough and understand not to start non-development threads in the dev forum, ask the question in the ROM thread. XDA likes contributors

I realize that but as I'm new to Android (Unix programmer from the 70's though) I do not use the phone with Droid as the BT earpiece is too important. With that in mind, I've little to offer.
Sounds like you're stuck with RTFM for now...
1. There is a thread for the BT, I don't recall the specifics but it's something about audio threading/routing I think?
2. Not sure on that one...
3. No help for Oldtimer's disease.
Keep in mind all of the efforts you see here are done by volunteers, there are no hard and fast release dates or etas for any of it. If you want to know when something will really be finished then you're going to need to brush the cobwebs off those programming skills and kick in some keyboard time. Based on what I've seen these guys are more than willing to help you get up to speed on that but I'd guess most of that is identifying who you need to PM to get the answer you need on specific questions.
You might also want to pick up a spare phone from craigslist and use it as a tester. You can get one for $100 or less if you're patient. I've found that to be the best way for me to learn what's really happening, then if you screw it up you're not scrambling around looking for a replacement while your wife's trying to get ahold of you.
They have threads in the dev section. BT routing is in a testing kernel. as for the PC connection google Droid Explorer. it will allow you to connect to it through adb instead of clicking usb mass storage.
I too am in the same boat as you. I've been using the FXR07 for a while and the BT was working fine (even for audio routing) and then all of a sudden it stopped working. First it quit detecting my device and I had to manually re-pair it each time, then it started doing the auto toggle on.off that you're talking about. So I tried updating to the FRX07.1 build and had the same issue. I also tried the GBX0A (Gingerbread) build and had the same issue. Though when I tried the GB build, I did carry over my data.img and my rootfs. I'm going to play with this some more and see if I can't get to the bottom of it, but I too am too new to be allowed to participate in the dev thread where this conversation really belongs.
I'll keep you posted if I find anything useful...please update us if you do also.
Don't use the same data.img when switching between builds. Use titanium back up to back up and restore data when switching between froyo and gingerbread.

Well, I went with the overkill approach and reformatted my SD card then put a clean copy of FRX07.1 on it. The bluetooth stopped cycling and half works. I can hear my audiobook playback and phone calls, but they can't hear me on a call. Also, I had to manually un-pair and re-pair the device this morning after having tested it yesterday. Not sure what help that gives...if any...
Hello everybody.
Simillar situation with my TP2. Can speak thru headset, but cannot listening to the music.
Succesfully instaled adb and connect, found in logs that I've no device /dev/htc-acoustic
adb shell ls -h /dev
or
adb shell ls /dev
But why before each device is 1;35m...
I will keep on working on it, my similar post is her (cannot post as link, grrrrrrrrr!!)

[Q] Replace WL1270 module?

I wanted to reply to this post but can't because I haven't made ten posts.
I've been reading up a bit on the BT thing, and was wondering how reasonable it would be to look into replacing the wireless module.
Even though these modules are made for OEM designs they can be bought from places like mouser. I don't think I would be able to get the datasheet from RFM since they ask to request it, and let you sign a NDA with lots of questions.
Has anybody been looking into this option seriously? I don't really know a lot about the software part of this operation, but wouldn't mind looking into the HW part.
As sidenotes:
* has anybody used the UART port used initially for hacking the device for other purposes such as controlling external hardware, or is this out of the question?
* Any chance the NT would get USB host connection somehow? Is this something that is currently being looked into or just not feasable?
regards
Hi,
* @AdamOutler has been the one using UART as far as i know, so if you have questions about it you should PM him (he's the man)
* I think devs are trying to first get Bluetooth working before USB host, i know in the nook color is possible and im sure they have it in their to-do list but will take sometime. one step at the time. If you want to know about the bluetooth issue they are having then check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554956 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1553040

Hi Veronica,
The post I refer to is in one of the threads that you link to.
The chip/module in the NT is the WL1270, which (according to the manufacturer), just isn't capable of BT. The WL1271 has that capability, hence the question about desoldering the module in the NT and swapping it with it's sister that has BT capability...
Or I really should have missed something...

[Q] Inverse Touchscreen after replasing.

I'm the moderator of russian forum about ASUS Prime.
See: http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=308957
Unfortunately I have not yet 10 posts.
So I ask here, and not in the development section.
Many people have a problem after replacing the touchpad as follows:
After buying a Chinese touchscreen for Asus Prime TF201 and installing it - they received the "inverse" reaction to touching:
if press on the left side of the screen - displayed click on the right side, and vice versa.
More information can be seen on the videos:
http://youtu.be/XUN_0q5I4ng and http://youtu.be/diIBdD5yMSI
Obviously, there are different revisions of tablet.
Has anybody any Idee how to fix it?
Can this be fixed by software or need a soldering-iron?
Apparently this is not fixable, since when Asus replaced screens, some users had their motherboards replaced too, so it's probably because the screens are of a batch that have the inverted axis problem and Asus replaced the motherboards to undo the invert.
I honestly have no idea, but just so you know this definitely shouldn't have gone in the Dev section like you wanted it to. If you have a ROM or kernel to post, put that in the Dev section. If you have anything other than those two things, it goes in one of the other sections accordingly. Under no circumstances should a question be in the Dev section. Questions in the Q&A section, general discussions about the tablet in the General section, etc.
Just trying to save you from getting yelled at in the future

I have the same question, or rather a problem with the "inverted-screen." Tell me where I can buy a normal version of the touchscreen? thanks

I would have thought the dev section also.
They're sourcing a non-original part that nearly works just that the touch screen data is backwards.
It would almost be trivial to rectify this if the drivers source was available.
In actual fact if you knew as much as a dev would know about the OS you could write an app that could do it without touching the drivers
my 2 cents

It's not as easy as you think. I've played around with the screen properties on some chinese tablets. Since it's an area the dev rarely messes with, I don't know how much they could do. Especially without a source for the driver. Anyone have the schematic for the touchscreen PIN out? It might be easier swapping wires around then screwing with the software.

Actually the drivers source is freely available as it is in the kernel.
you could probably fix it in kernel, but this would mean being forever stuck running a custom kernel.
There is another thread in this section also discussing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837997 See if post 29 helps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31850738&postcount=29
