Does anyone know of a way to turn off the notification sound when a text arrives? I don't mean the Text Messaging app notification, that's already off so there shouldn't be any sound but everytime I receive a text I still get a sound and vibrate which is coming from Settings > Sound Settings > Notification Ringtone (not the Text Messaging app settings).
If I use a 3rd party app (e.g. GoSMS) for texts I get double notifications, even when I turn off notifications for the stock messaging app. If I turn off the notification sound in Settings > Sound I don't get any sound at all.
Any ideas anyone? Hope you know what I mean, sorry if I haven't explained very well.
Grab and use the App "Simple sound profile widget" from the market.
That is one of my all time favorite Android apps ever! (plus its easy to use and free)
Hopefully that should help you out. If not, it's still a must have App anyway...

Thanks for coming to my assistance (again!) ccrows
I tried that app but unfortunately it didn't solve my problem, but really glad you mentioned it, it's definitely a really useful app to have.
It seems the stock android sound/vibrate notification is activated for any alert, in addition to whatever alert the individual app (i.e. text messaging/goSMS/email) uses, and I'm unable to separate them. I either have no notifications or two notifications
Is everyone else's phone the same? When you get a text message do you get two notifications (but not two messages)?
Many thanks
[EDIT] Problem solved, I feel like such an idiot! Every time I send/receive a text my carrier sends me a message with an update of my monthly allowance. I turned that off via their website and now no more double notifications. It was their message that was triggering the extra notification at the same time as the text messages.

This is my second GS, and I never paid attention to it the first time, but now I am getting annoyed with it. Every time I receive a Text the phone plays 2 sounds as the alert. I've tried changing the notification sound, but it still plays the default sound plus my selected sound. So it plays the selected sound first, then the default chime right after.
Anyone knows how to make it stop doing this?
Are you using a 3rd party text app like Handcent or Chomp? If so you need to turn off notifications in the stock sms app.
No,
I'm using stock msg program.
I have this problem too. I only use the default messaging. I used to have hand scent but I deleted it and I still have this problem. Also I get two notifications on my bar and one of them stays there even after I read the text. Annoying!

I was hoping that someone could show me an app that will allow me to set a custom ringtone and a custom SMS ringtones. The MoPho doesn't have the ability to set a certain ringtone to one person and it uses the same notification sound for everything else. I was also hoping that I could get an app or mod that will allow me to customize the vibrating patterns for calls, emails, and texts. Does an app like this exist?
u can do seperate ringtones for all contacts by going into contacts pull up menu of yone of ir contacts then go into options, there it will ask what ringer u want.

to download many unique tones and ringers try zedge app in market
To set a song or tone as a ringer believe u can go to music library and long press and has option to set
Also i used astro file manager go to folder where tones and music are and u can set a tone

Look for an app called "Lightflow" its a root app that should do exactly what your speaking about, lets you choose specific color for led, change vibrate settings, and ringtone settings for email, sms ,calls, etc. If your not rooted then not sure what to tell you, but if you are id def try out lightflow, ive been using it for a awhile now and i love it. Overall its pretty damn customizable for all the settings, especially the vibrate settings.

Is that it?
I'm not sure what the Bump policy is here...
Yeah thats the app i was talking about, it looks like a new update version, apparently mine just hasn't updated recently is all, but yeah thats it. Sorry for the long response time on my end
It slightly worries me cause it is constantly gaining permissions all the time. Is it safe?

Ive only had it come up requesting SU while on boot and if i change settings(i just hit the check to always allow). I can personally say i have had no issues with it, ive got a facebook, gmail, and few email accounts linked to it and it hasn't messed with those as far as ive ever noticed, and Ive used lightflow for about a month or two so far. Your call on it, if you don't feel its safe or what you want then dont load it up. To each his own!
Anyone else notice that if the messaging app is open to a conversation, and the phone goes into lockmode, or you lock it and a new message comes in, it doesn't make a peep, or flash the LED?
Am I missing a setting?
Don't think it's a setting.
I know when you have the messaging app open no notifications occur if you are in the same conversation. I think if you are in a different conversation you do get notified via task bar and vibrate/sound. I guess by design since you are there. So it seems that even with the screen off it knows where you are and won't notify.
I never noticed this since I never got a text with the app open and screen off.
Which was the exact reason I use go sms. I missed too many important texts that required immediate answers.

I have recently moved to an S3 after years in iPhone land. Its been mostly great, the S3 is a way more open and powerful platform. However a coupe of small things are driving me nuts.
All I want is my phone to vibrate and ring at the same time for incoming calls. Vibrate and play a tone when an SMS is recieved and neither vibrate or play a tone when an email is recievied (but still pop up the icon in the notification area). Seems simple enough, but it appears to be impossible on the stock phone. The only setting covering vibration in the Sound menu is "Sound and Vibration" but if I tick this the damn phone vibrates for all notifications, even if I have the notification sound set as "Silent".
The most frustrating thing is that is seems vibration settings per app used to be there in the S2, but have been removed in the S3. Now the Messaging and Email Apps do not have a specific vibrate option, rather it is all controlled with the global "Sound and Vibration" option.
My other annoyance is there is no easy way to control the brightness from the notification area (with out installing a crappy app). Once again it appears the S2 had a slider right on the notification pulldown, but for some reason this was removed?!?
I have used up all my Google Fu and have no answers. Can anyone suggest how to do these seemingly simple things in the stock rom, or suggest an app or even rom that has these features.
Thanks.
try this....
Setting > [email protected] > ringtone &vibrate

You can fix that in the messaging app settings. Messaging -> Settings -> Notification Settings. Tick Notifications and then select a ringtone. If it is still not working then its a bug, try rebooting the phone.
Regarding brightness control, try the app Quicker in Google Play

Thanks for the suggestion.. it gets quite close to what i want if you use the status bar shortcut. Just wish it could put the slider *right on* the status bar.
I think that saying it's a mess is a bit melodramatic. I have mine set up exactly as you describe. Maybe you need to play with your in-app settings a bit more ...

yup i already did this. looks like my unit needs to be replaced.
Is anyone else having problems where your phone freezes for a few seconds when you recieve a sms while the phone is in use?

If i were you i'd do a factory reset.
Before i got my phone i had heard issues where notifications either wouldnt appear or would appear even when there is no text and various other issues regarding sound etc
So to make sure i didnt get any of these issues as soon as i got my phone i didnt a factory reset straight away and i haven't had any issues.
I've set my phone to silent and vibrate. The SMS notification vibration duration is annoyingly long on the S3. Is there a way to shorten it?
I use volume control + pro, and everything is good.... Give it a try

I have exactly the same problem. Since i get a lot of mail every day, it's annoying to have vibration enabled, but disabling it in global settings disables it also for SMS :/ I don't think there is a way right now to leave it enabled for SMS only.

Same here, I set up mine almost exactly as he describe and no problem at all.
So after all this discussion, has anyone figured out how to disable just the vibrate alert for the stock email app? I still want notification in the taskbar, just no vibrate.

No problems at all. As has been said, you need to set your notifications in the in app settings, not the general sound settings on the phone.
To start, go into the phone settings and select sound, and then for notifications set it to silent. Leave sound and vibration as checked.
Then use your in app settings to set you sound and vibration for notifications. I haven't used the stock email app, I use the gmail app. You have to go into the settings for each individual app, but you can set a custom notification sound and vibration for each account. I tested this with two of mine, having vibration on for one and off for another then sent some mail. It vibrated for the account with vibration on, and did not vibrate for the one with vibration off.

OK, just out of interest sake I set up an email account using the stock email app and while it does have custom notification settings for each account, it does not give you the option to disable/enable vibration. So, to me, it appears you can not turn off the vibration in the stock email app without turning it off for the whole phone.
I would assume your only choice would be to use a third party email app if this is important to you.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
I'm on stock everything and it works fine. Only thing I had to do is install an app to get some specific mp3 ringtones I had made. But I do have the option for different types of vibration for different contacts or groups, the silent mode works and the custom vibration also works.

1. Pull down the menu where you see notifications and can switch wifi gps etc. Off.
2. Enable the notifications by scrolling to the right and finding the ( ! ) logo.
Vibration is now activated again. Had the problem myself my girlfriend kept asking me how
So my mom and I both got ourselves an S3 and she keeps complaining about the notification sounds.
Basically there's the ringtone, and then there's notification sounds for EVERYTHING including SMS. What she wants is to have a tone for SMS and another for calls, and the rest of the notifications silent (mail, facebook etc.)
I couldn't find an option to separate sms tones from the rest, so I'm at a loss.
I hope you can help me, as google proved to be utterly useless in this case
edit: A fix that does not include going into each app and making it silent. She has no patience.. at all.

You could use Go SMS, and set up the sms notification on there. Then make the default notification for everything else to be silent in the system sound settings. Works for me.

I did consider that, but the lack of patience and hate for something that's different (She's a former apple user -.-) might get in the way. I'll ask her though. Thanks ^^
Even better, as Go SMS has an iphone theme which will make it look just like what she's used to!

To have a separate alert tone for each you need to set the tone from inside the app itself, I.e open up your sms message app press menu key press settings scroll to the bottom where it says notifications and simply alter it from there. Hope I've helped you.
