I am trying to create forum specific shortcuts for XDA Premium app.
Looking around the net everyone I've found so far says to use AnyCut or Folder Organizer for custom shortcuts. This does not produce the desired product.
There are two actions for XDA app (intents?) listed, but they are not identified as to which is which, I will explain my findings so far.
The device I am currently using is SGSII Epic 4G Touch, but if I can get it working, should not be device specific.
So on my SGSII if I long press and select Shortcuts, scroll to the bottom I can choose "xda premium". This is not a shortcut to the app, but creates a shortcut to individual main forums. For this example I'll choose Developer Forums.
The icon created says only "Shortcut to", and I can't read the rest. This is annoying.
Alternatively, long press -> shortcuts -> AnyCut -> Activity
There are 2 "xda premium" options.
The first one will create a regular shortcut to the app, the second one creates a shortcut to the function that creates a shortcut to the different forums. This icon can be named whatever I want, however, when I click it I have to choose a forum, then that creates a new shortcut called "Shortcut to"
This is useless.
The effect with Folder Organizer is similar. Additionally, with either app, on my phone the links I create do not show up in the Edit Existing(anycut) or Shortcuts(Folder Organizer) menus in the respective programs.
I've found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6081250
Which addresses watching the adb logs for the action being performed, which I could then use (hopefully) to create a custom action in AnyCut.
Currently I'm at work, I can get the SDK installed, and it would probably take all freakin day to get installed.
So now to the question.
Would anyone happen to know what "intent" is required to create shortcuts to individual forums through the XDA app?
Maybe there is a far simpler way of accomplishing the same thing AND having shortcuts with reasonable names.
***Mods please move to appropriate forum, I didn't know where else to post something like this***
Got SDK installed and ADB working (finally ugh)
Code:
adb logcat > output.txt
so I have the output of me clicking on the stupid "Shortcut to"
but when I look through it for anything that contains "xda" I haven't found anything that calls to a specific forum
There's a bunch of places where "com.quoord.tapatalkxdapre.activity" occur
Not sure what it is exactly I'm looking for.
64 views of this thread, I'm assuming no one that knows has viewed yet.
still digging..
Does this mean anything to anyone?
I/Launcher( 2872): added a item in workspace. com.sec.android.app.twlauncher.UserFolderInfo XDA -1 -1 -1 61|-100|6|3|2|2 [email protected]
I/Launcher( 2872): added a item in workspace. com.sec.android.app.twlauncher.ApplicationInfo Shortcut to Samsung Epic 4G Touch -1 -1 -1 62|-100|6|0|2|1 [email protected]
I/Launcher( 2872): --> title=Shortcut to Samsung Epic 4G Touch
Figured it out.
Stay tuned, explanation after qdoba.

hello, i've got the htc hd2. overall i'm satisfied. but i've seen at a friends iphone that instead of having all the quick links out in the open, he has icons of their libraries such as: programs, games, extra, news and more. once he presses a library it opens another window bellow it and he can select the prog he wants to lunch. i beleive if this is somehow available in the hd2, maybe through cookies editor or something like that, it would be great - time saving, organized, easy to use...
does anyone know of this feature in the iphone? is it a 3rd party app or some setting? is it possible to be activated or installed on the hd2?
thanks guys.

u can create subfolder in your /windows/startup folder and move there your start menu items
but i can't create those subfolders as quick links. it's as i would go and start file expolrer and look for the app i want, only in subfolders. i would like to have subfolders as quicklins...

yes u can, if u have a powerful file manager like resco explorer (not free) or any other free one around
check here and here, not perfect eye-candy, but works
the "latest" iOS feature of grouping in folders is a laughable attempt by apple to copy what windows mobile has had for AGES!
the iphone does not have a home screen. instead, it just throws all your program shortcuts on the home screen. the equivalent of this is the windows mobile "start" menu. one tap and you get the start menu to show off to your iphone pals.
the windows mobile "start" menu is more powerful because it offers n-level nesting and unlimited number of links within a "group" (lets call them folders because thats the correct windows mobile term!). finally, it offers mixing links and folders within a folder! not sure the iphone can do that.
as stated above, use a powerful file manager to create folders under your start menu, give them icons, and organize existing links under these new folders. add more than 12 links AND folders to a folder and throw that in your iphone pal's face!
ok. i like what you're saying... however, i am using the cookies home tab editor (i think that's the name) and i've removed everything (clock, tasks, calender...) from the home screen so i can have a picture of my beautiful wife and 4 icons of quick links at the bottom (not including the sliding bar of the windows mobile). so as a resault of this if i had folders on the main home screen i'd needed 4, the most important and that's it. and i have to tell you, i hardly use the START button. so, i'm still looking for something to help me place folders and not link to programs on my hd2's home screen.

there is a way: You have to put a .lnk in that folder and then it will show up on quicklinks for cht.
You can pm watcher64. He made one for me for a movies folder
The only way I know how to create a shortcut on the desktop is to press and hold on the desktop, then select shortcut from the pop-up menu. Unfortunately, this method doesn't appear to work on my rooted NT.
Any suggestions how this can be done?
There's probably an easier/more elegant way, but this is one I know of, and since most of us are probably already using AnyCut:
Open AnyCut.
New Shortcut/Make your own
ACTION: android.intent.action.VIEW
DATA: http://URL
Nothing needed under TYPE. Name it, and it should appear on the desktop. The icon will be ugly stock Android, but if you're using GoLauncher or similar you can replace it with a decent icon if that matters to you.
Perfect. Thanks so much.
Code:
How do I install a shortcut on the homescreen? When I long press and tap "shortcut" nothing happens. There are websites I visit frequently that don't have an app.
in your browser favorites if you long hold it will give you the option to paste shortcut on homescreen. i think it is long hold that does this
It worked for some, but said the others already existed (even though they didn't). Anyhoo, considering my ineptness, this is a success. Thanks much!
Yeah I figured more people would have said something about not being able to put application shortcuts on the desktop.. or make folders for that matter. I mean the menu comes up to add folder or shortcut but it just sits there after that.
Also how do you switch from one application to another? With my phone you can hold the home screen button down and a box will appear with all the running/recently used apps appears. With this I have to keep going back to the launcher and restart the app every time I just want to switch to it. Is there an app I have to add for simple task switching?
I have solved the switching issue with 2 free applications, 'PreHome' and 'Notification Toggle'. PreHome gives you a popup with open and recent applications. Use Notification Toggle to put PreHome in your notification tray and you have quick switching.
Thanks.. nifty workaround.. now just click on the notification icon.. then to the task switcher.. Now just need to figure out why the shortcuts / folders don't add to the desktop.
I am not able to add folders to my homescreen on my rooted nook tablet either. Does anyone know of a fix for this?
I will have to try out the task switcher as well. I was looking for that functionality.

Using Go Launcher EX, I create the folders in my app drawer by dragging apps on top of each other, and then dragging the folders to my home screen.
I believe other launchers have the same feature. Outside of that, I don't believe there is a way to create folder right on the home screen since B&N did not include it in their build.
I am using ADW launcher. I will mess around with it some more today and see what I can come up with.
edit: No luck creating folders on the home screen with ADW launcher, no matter what I try.
I've had the same issues trying to create shortcuts and folders on rooted NT. I'm using ADW launcher as well. My workaround was to create "catalogs" for the folders I wanted on the home screen and organize my apps this way.
To do this:
Open the app drawer, click the menu button, then pick "choose catalog" to create a new catalog. This creates a new screen that you can then choose "setup catalog" and check off what you want. Then go to the home screen, long press, and pick "launcher actions". There should be options to "show catalog ____". You can then change the icon to the folder by long pressing and choosing "edit" and picking the icon and loading a new pic, etc.
This will get you a folder with whatever games or apps you want.
I created a "Games" folder this way.
Regarding the shorcuts issue, try the program "AnyCut" to try to create shorcuts. It's not the perfect solution as I was unable to figure out how to create a "directions & navigations" shorcut from it, but it has a ton of options. Worth a look.

I made folders by bringing the apps i wanted to the homescreen, then dragging the apps together. The first two apps that are combined will create a folder, then drag more apps to it to add them. Long press the folder to rename it. This is all with ADW Ex.
Looks like com.android.settings is supposed to contain .ActivityPicker which handles the android.intent.action.PICK_ACTIVITY intent.
I wonder if I could just take the settings apk from my phone and throw it on my Nook. I have no idea which apk it actually is though.
EDIT: Derp, it's /system/app/Settings.apk.
adb shell
pm list packages -f
will give a list
EDIT2: Looks like all the code is there for the ActivityPicker, it's just not registered in the manifest. I'm almost positive I can just recompile it with the info added and shortcuts will work. I just have to figure out how to compile without compression or confirm the Nook can handle compressed apks.
For folder shortcuts im using an app called Folder Organizer. Once you get your apps sorted into whatever sort of folders/lables you like you can add them as a widget to the desktop. They function just like a folder and i just discovered that Titanium Backup will automatically usr them as a sorting lable fpr app filters if you need that.

When I try this, I get a message saying it's incompatible with my theme (BigDX ADW Serenity) and it goes back to the default theme. But even then, I can't create folders. Keeps giving me the same message.
I'm also using ADW EX.
Does go launcher or the other one work on none rooted NTs? I dont rewlly want to root right now because i have the warranty. And what is the "app" or program that has a home key on the side of the nook screen so that you can go between sideloaded apps and the actual nook? (Or is that just on rooted NTs? Thanks!
I've kind of gave up on shortcuts and folders. I spent a bunch of time (twice) setting a bunch of this stuff up to find it missing after a reboot No more.

Odd, I have no problem creating a shortcut using Activities/ and scrolling down to Directions & Navigation.
Also:
1. ES File Explorer can create file system shortcuts on the desktop. They open of course in ES File Exlorer.
2. BetterCut is more in depth and a much better interface than Anycut. Dev is defunct, but the .apk can be found with a search.
3. As others have said, creating folders is very simple with Go Launcher.
4. Button Savior (which I wouldn't want to use the NT without) long pressing the home button brings up a task switcher with the last 6 apps used.

GoLauncher definitely works without being rooted.
I'm guessing the app you mean is Button Savior? If so, the home button does work without root, but most of the features (like the task switcher) require root.
Otherwise you can use HomeCatcher to set up the N button for whichever launcher you want. It's been a long time since my NT wasn't rooted, but if I remember correctly this didn't require root.
What I like to do is use AnyCut to create a shortcut (Activities/Home) back to the stock NT interface. Then you can switch back and forth between homes interfaces. (Stock and goLauncher).
If you uninstall GoLauncher or other alternative launcher then home will default back to the stock interface.
Before coming to Android, I had a Nokia N900 running Maemo 5 operating system, which, like Android, was partly open source and based on the Linux kernel. While there are certainly lots more apps on Android, there is one app from Maemo that I really do miss and cannot find a replacement for. The app I am talking about, goes by the name of Queen Beecon Widget and in the words of the dev, it is "A super powerful and customizable widget generation engine" http://wiki.maemo.org/Queen_BeeCon_Widget
It is a really versatile tool. Here are a couple of screenshots of my previous setups to show what sort of thing I am after. Most of the items you see on all three screenshots are created by using this app, as you can input any image that you want to be displayed along with the result, as long as it is a.Png
So, sure, I know about widgets that can cater for certain parts of this app eg. Widgetsoid, Minimalistic Text, Meta Widget etc. but what I am really after, is an on-device widget creator that can export terminal commands, as a result and directly onto the desktop. I have had a look at script manager and sm widget, but that doesn't seem to display the result directly onto the desktop (when I tap on the widget I have made, it opens up terminal, which defeats the object for me). Does anyone know of a tool, app or widget or even a combination of apps that I can use to achieve this?
Hopefully I have been clear enough.
I also wanted to post a very brief and simple way to explain what I am looking for. In basic terms, I need a (terminal) command execution widget that will display the result directly on the desktop.
The widget that accompanies Script Manager is sort-of on its way to what I need. Perhaps someone knows of an app like this, that is a bit more advanced, flexible and customizable. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Anyone got any ideas?

The above post may be answering my question in the negative, but to be certain, I thought that I would ask.
Is it possible to create a folder that contains the shortcuts to multiple websites and their names?
I frequent 15-20 websites that are hobby related. I would love to create a folder with the hobby name that houses these website shortcuts. Perhaps that ability is already available or a work-around will allow me to to that very thing, but if there is, it's alluding me.

Hi, try this:
1. Long press on the homescreen - Advanced - Shortcuts - Bookmark (make sure that you've added these websites as bookmarks, either on your phone or PC, it will be linked to Chrome).
2. Select a bookmark, it will now be added on your homescreen.
3. Repeat the process, and now you can drag bookmarks on top of each other to create a folder.
Hope this helps
