Is there an App to turn my phone into a wifi hotspot for free? Like, I'm fine with paying for the app, but I don't wanna pay for tethering. I will root if necessary (heck, I'd probably root regardless when I get the phone).

You can use barnicle app (free) or if your more comfortable with modding your phone you can enable the mobile hotspot setting, it only takes like 10 min.

You don't need a third-party app. You can get the Mobile Hotspot the phone comes with to work without a tether plan: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980636

I guess that might work, but I'm gonna be getting the phone from Bell, not AT&T, so that may not work for me.

why do u even need 3rd party apps? Root your phone, and the wifi hotspot (aka tethering) option is built-in within the phone itself, for free.
Go here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root to root your phone. It's very simple actually. Just follow the steps.
Good luck.

Will AT&T know you are tethering? I am on unlimited plan and they may just switch me to a limited plan. That will suck!

They can't switch your plans unless you say so. They either need your sig from a store or need you to switch online. The worst that might (and most likely won't) happen is that they'll just cancel your plan, in which case, congrats, you just got an Atrix for a really good deal.
What is most likely gonna happen is that IF AT&T figures out you are tethering, they're just gonna charge you for it. I don't know how AT&T's rates are, but I believe the company I'm with, Bell (it's in Canada) charges about $5/mb if you're tethering.
So, if I were you, I'd get the app or do the mod. Then use about 1mb through tethering. Then call them in a few hours, maybe the next day and ask how much tethering you have used so far. If they say 1mb, you did something wrong (and get dinged on your next bill for it), if they say nothing, then you're good.

Ya, rooting is the easy part, but how do I access the wifi tether option after rooting? and are you sure I won't be charged for tethering if I use it?
Also, like I said, I'm not with AT&T. I live in Canada, and a company called Bell is gonna be getting it here soon, I'm gonna be buying the phone from them, and using it off their network.

No, don't root using that article (could someone get them to update the article with the new method?). It's messy for the Atrix. Best thing to do now is use aRoot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=981866

Dude, neither Telus or Bell have any sort of tethering fees. You also don't know if Bell will modify the phone to just include the option, seeing as AT&T have some sort of tethering fee service going on for some reason.
The only thing you're going to get from tethering here is whatever data you use being chipped off your regular data plan. I use 50 MB worth of tethering, that's 50 MB off my data (which makes sense).

Are you sure they don't have any tethering? I remember once they increased my bill by a horrific amount, and they said it was because I tethered to my computer (I didn't tether and after many calls and hours of complaining, they took away the charge). However, thinking back to it, that was before I had data as well. I do remember the rep specifically saying it's because I tethered data to my computer though, maybe he meant that I tethered it but I was being charged regular data.
Anyways, what you said is what I want, I have 6gb of data and I rarely get passed 500mb. I wanna start using more of my data per month, and wifi tethering is gonna help me with that.
after rooting the htc thunderbolt can we use the wifi tether app for root users to tether for free? and will it be at 4g speeds. sorry if this was answered already, and thanks for the info.

Be careful, Big Red (and others) is watching. Wireless tether, easy tether, and PDAnet have all been removed from the market for VZW customers. I am sure a quick Google search will find the apks to download, but I think part of what is pushing carriers to demand locked bootloaders is people abusing rooted tethering. I can’t say that I agree since I am paying for the data so it should not matter if I use it through my phone or laptop, but there have been rumblings of problems such as data throttles for heavy data users.

I don't agree with them, but I think the rationale is the buffet metaphor... you can't pay for the buffet and invite 5 friends to share your meal. I think this is a big part of why (to my knowledge) USB tethering isn't being targeted. Wifi tethering is like sharing with 5 friends, USB tethering is bringing your own plate and silverware.
Honestly I'd prefer a "do what you want, tethering or not" approach that included a X GB limit over this "unlimited, but we decide how you use it" crap.

I hear the free unrooted mobile hotspot is only free for a few more weeks.
All you have to do to download Wireless Tether or any other apps blocked by Verizon is put your phone into Airplane Mode and then turn on WiFi. As long as you have a WiFi signal with the phone in Airplane Mode, you will have accessibility to all blocked Apps in the Market, even if your phone is not rooted!

Personally, I don't like that companies are moving toward the "buffet" approach to providing internet access. I have AT&T DSL. They provide me with an internet connection. PERIOD. They don't give me the internet connection and then say only use this on one computer nor do they say I'm not allowerd to hook it up to my Linksys router. It makes more sense to me that way. Maxing out my connection speed on one machine would be equivalent to me maxing it out across several.

You can root it and use barnacle, or use the hotspot feature under the "wireless and network settings" if AT&T hasn't disabled it. I was planning on getting one earlier today, but wasn't able to get to the store before work.
Check the settings and see if "Tethering & portable hotspot" feature is there. If it is it will just use your regular data plan.
Ok thanks im going to just wait for a root to come out.

When I picked up my phone at AT&T they asked me if I wanted the family (?) tether plan for $45/mo. I said no. When I checked the phone at home, the tether option was there, so is it cool to tether the phone without getting a nasty gram?

The moment you turn that on and start using it you will get a notice that you will need to change to that tether plan. Unless you get PDAnet or root the phone and use one of those apps.
I rooted , used Titanium Backup and froze tethering manager app, wifi tethering now works fine with my android tablet.

Any link to rooting the AT&T version? Want to root and use the built in tether. As of now, when you try to use the tether it will say you need to have the tether option. Don't want to pay the extra for using it a few times a month.

Yep, you're right. I just tried it.
I guess I root.
You need to root the phone and unintall the Tethering Manager in order to use the built-in tethering features without paying for it.
Just remember that a lot of people have been getting nastygrams from AT&T even without interference from tethering manager. There has been a lot of speculation as to the cause, but naive tethering is detectable in a number of ways, so don't be surprised if they suddenly decide to up your bill by $20.
Has anyone actually used Barnacle with this phone?
I rooted and installed Barnacle, which has to be downloaded from their site because it is blocked in Market. I start Barnacle and it has SU privilege, but no device can see the hotspot it creates. Even when I create the WiFi network there is no connection.
I'm having the same problem as far as my phone telling me I need a tethering plan. If you want to tether without paying for it, you have to root and freeze/remove tethering manager, or use a third-party app. Plus, you still risk AT&T slapping you with the overpriced tethering plan if they catch you. Not really sure there is anything you can do.
I figured as much. I never had a problem up til today when I got my new Gs2. I don't tether much at all to be honest with you. But at&t screwed me cause now I'm without Internet so I can't root even if I wanted to. I think I have no choice but to get a wireless Internet card til I root & find a decent ROM. Thanks a bunch for the advice though.. Much appreciated!!

You don't necessarily have to download it from their site. If you have a wifi connection you should be able to put the phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and connect that way. Either that or remove the sim card and get on wifi. As long as the sim is either removed or disabled and you are on wifi the market will not be filtered.
Maybe you're trying to connect devices to it that can either only see an infrastructure mode access point or are set to only connect to those. My laptop didn't see mine at first, but then I changed the setting in the wireless to show all types of connections (ad-hoc and infrastructure) and it worked. I had to actually modify the wifi_supplicant file on my moto Xoom for it to see ad-hoc connections.

This method has been used on the GS3 as well so whoever gave that advice. TY
However, All you need to do is go to settings -> more settings -> mobile hotspot and set up your SSID and password. Afterwards, head the the play store and search https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=bohlool.net.toogleHotspot&hl=en and install. Go to your widgets and place it somewhere on your homescreen and tap for instant success. Thanks!

Hopefully, this will be more stable than Wireless Tether which more or less causes phone to reboot and how frequent depends on the version used.

Does this not activate Verizon Hotspot charges??
Had the same question as above...
When I was testing out foxfi, as soon as I turned on foxfi, it would also activate the "Mobile Hotspot" icon that came with the phone. Does it charge me for it through Verizon?
After I deleted foxfi and tried to use the mobile hotspot directly, it asks me to sign up with a plan...
Does this mean that using third party tethering programs activating the "Mobile Hospot" that came with the phone doesn't incur any extra charges?
Thanks~
works perfect thanks man!
Does this bypass Verizon's tether charge?
Works fine here. If this did activate Verizon hot spot I believe it would make you sign up. Quick way to check would be at my Verizon and see if your plan changed mine hasnt
I just tried it and it did take me to the Verizon hotspot sign up. Unless there's another way to use it you're not gonna' tether for free with this.
It's an easy way to turn your paid-for hotspot on though.
I am using widgetsoid to make a toggle, it's pretty much the same thing, it activates the Verizon hotspot without having to register.
This way is more stable then foxfi, I would lose my connection all the time with that one.

I can confirm this bypasses the subscription. When running without the app it asks to subscribe. With the little app it with will not ask to subscribe and do native tether...

Good thing you can decline OTAs if you so desire. I don't think VZW cares that much about us tethering anymore, especially since they signed that agreement with the government to not block tethering as a condition of buying more spectrum. That's why tethering is included free now with the shared data plans. There are so few of us left who still have unlimited data, just don't all torrent 100 GB over the cell connection and VZW will probably leave us alone.
I have turned on the stock Hotspot, that came on the GN2, and it seems to work great. I was not asked to sign up for a Hotspot plan either. Is this unusual?

Hi All,
Longtime Samsung user here and I've just moved over to the V10.
Hello to all.
I've been doing a lot of reading and as far as I can tell there is no known way of bypassing the tethering provision on T-Mobile to take advantage of unlimited data plans, is this correct? I have heard of 3rd party apps like WiFi for tether router and FoxFi but lately people have been suggesting that T-Mobile has found a way to monitor those.
So is there a way to take advantage of my unlimited data plan using my device as a hotspot?

It has been years since I tether or used my hotspot plan that comes with my "unlimited" plan (metropcs/tmobile). I couldn't afford my cable bill this month so it was temporarily suspended. My kids freaked out, no Netflix? I assumed that I had "unlimited" hotspot with my "unlimited" plan but I guess I was wrong. I received a text that at was at 10% remaining yesterday and then the throttle began.
I received a text asking if I want more hotspot data...I clicked link. It was just offering more phones and plans. No extra hotspot plans.
So I had to resort to my old tactics and try to go around the throttle. Here were some of my tries:
1. Wifi Tether Router: I bought this last year and have always worked before. Not this time. My speeds were ridiculous slow when tethering. Developer is awesome on providing frequent updates. So I guess I have to wait.
2. PDAnet: it worked for a while but it kept resetting itself. So, I decided not to buy it.
3. Titanium BackUp: freezed native apps- my account, name id, tethering provision
Still throttled.
Will report if I found a solution. But will be paying my cable bill first.

From my understanding there is really no way around the slowdown once Tmobile flags your account for tether disablement. Some data usage is counted towards your pool of tether alotment even if you use those workarounds .Once your billing cycle starts over and tethering provision is reset than you will be able to tether a lot longer as long as you use one of the apps you mentioned earlier .You may need to freeze the Tmobile.adapt app with Titanium back up I think that's one of the system apps used to monitor your tether usage ..like I said not all data is masked so some seepage will happen but you will be able to tether longer ........hope I helped

Have you tried adjusting the TTL option in Wifi Tether Router? I read that worked.
